00:42it's no wonder that around a quarter of all UK vehicles now have dashcams fitted.

01:11In this series, we follow them as they crack down on Britain's bad drivers.

02:24Inspector Anton Sullivan has seen a worrying rise in the number of fatalities on Cheshire's roads.
02:30This thing is dead important if we are at the seams of any major incidents.
02:37With 20 years in the force, and being a former detective, Anton's ready to take on any case.
02:44My hat, my glasses. You wouldn't think all of that weighs a ton.
02:49It doesn't get any easier.
02:52The M6 motorway that runs through Cheshire is the deadliest motorway in Britain.
02:57On average, more than a dozen lives are lost on it every year.
03:03Well, you know, motorways are brilliant when they're working.
03:06It just becomes a nightmare when they're not.
03:09Even the inspector gets stuck in traffic on the motorway.
03:12Well, unless I've got a reason to blue light my way through, which I don't at this current state,
03:18then I'll have to sit like everybody else and just take the pain.
03:24It's been an absolute massive smash behind us, a couple of wagons and that.
03:28Do we need an ambulance, do we think, for this?
03:30I'd say just get everybody there.
03:34It's Thursday lunchtime, and Anton is six and a half miles away from the collision.

03:44He's on a section of the motorway with no hard shoulder,
03:47and is fighting his way through the traffic,
03:50while other officers are first on the scene.
04:12We've got what looks like a serious collision involving a number of HGVs.
04:21Anton is clear of the traffic,
04:23but he knows that as he approaches the scene, that won't last.
04:29We're coming up on the backlog of traffic now.
04:33But on this stretch of motorway, Anton has a way of getting through.
04:40It's what we call hard shoulder running, but it's really, really tricky.
04:45You've got debris waiting for people to jump into the hard shoulder for any reason.
04:50We need to drive slower, but at least we can get to the scene,
04:52as long as people don't clutter up the hard shoulder.
04:57When blockages do occur, and emergency services can't get through,
05:01people's lives are at risk.
05:05Here, in West Yorkshire,
05:07Dashcam captures drivers stretching their legs on the hard shoulder,
05:11and blocking the way of the police,
05:13desperately trying to get to a distressed woman on a bridge up ahead.
05:17A police negotiator has no option but to abandon his car
05:21and dash to save the woman's life.
05:24Luckily, he managed to get there just in time.
05:31Near Birmingham, on the M6,
05:33West Midlands Police spot a motorist.

13:21that have been stuck for nearly five hours.
13:24What tends to happen, all the public who are driving past
13:27are actually looking at what's happening here.
13:30I know people feel they can't help it,
13:33but they're not watching what they're doing in front,
13:35and if they were travelling at speed,
13:37we would then end up with further collisions.

18:15in Cheshire's control room herself,
18:17but she swapped that role for a faster-paced one
18:20and is now an elite motorway cop.

18:58If we're making to a grade one emergency call which has come in

19:10to the circumstances, to the road.
19:12That's part and parcel of being an advanced driver.
19:36So it sounds like he's hit quite a few parked cars.
19:39Which obviously isn't the driving of a careful, competent person
19:43that you'd imagine to be in full control.
19:45So it's either going to be drink or drug driving
19:49or trying to get away from something, maybe,
19:53or medical episodes. You can't really rule that out.

21:28Here, another biker is dangerously riding at speeds of 100 miles an hour in 30 limits.

21:49before someone's killed.
21:57The rider later pleaded guilty to a number of offences, including dangerous driving and

31:04who use the road network in and out of the county
31:07to commit offences, often in stolen vehicles.
