00:00Joining me now is Matt Coz, TSN 1050 host and co-host of the Macco and Coz podcast.
00:06Matt, thanks very much for joining us.
00:08Not the conversation we want to have right now, stunning news.
00:11Yeah, it really is, and the information started to trickle at around 5.20, 5.30 this morning.
00:19Around seven o'clock or so, it was confirmed, and now we're finding out more of the details
00:24about the drunk driver who's been charged with a couple counts of impaired driving and
00:29death by automobile.
00:31And this is such a gut punch throughout the entire NHL, because this is a 31-year-old
00:37who's still an entire career ahead of him in the NHL, and him and his brother, they
00:42played together at Boston College when Johnny won the top collegiate hockey player award.
00:48And to go from being a fourth-round draft pick to a guy making the All-Star team seven
00:55times also screams about the work ethic that Johnny Goudreau possessed.
01:00I mean, just devastating, unexpected news in every aspect.
01:05I mean, he was not a big man by any stretch, but boy, oh boy, he could play.
01:11Yeah, and that's one of the things.
01:12That's why he got the nickname Johnny Hockey.
01:14It's one of the reasons people liked him.
01:17You always expect the six-foot-two, 200-plus-pound giant of a man to do well in the NHL.
01:25But what I think always connects with hockey fans is the guy who's a little bit smaller
01:29in stature, the guy who's not drafted in the first round, the player who isn't guaranteed
01:34success.
01:35When you see those stories succeed on the ice, it's easy to root for him.
01:40And certainly there was a connection, as you mentioned, here in Canada.
01:43His best years were in Calgary.
01:46They were part of some really exciting teams.
01:49So to see that story snuffed out in such a, just, again, I'm trying to use other words
01:56than tragic.
01:57In some ways, it feels like this wasn't supposed to be how it ended.
02:01He was supposed to be in everyone's hockey lives longer, and a young father and a husband.
02:06I mean, it's just such a sad story.
02:09And that's, you know, we can talk about his accomplishments on the ice, but also, married
02:13two young kids and out riding with his brother, and that's going to get lost unfortunately
02:18in this, is that his brother was also killed by this apparent drunk driver.
02:21Yes.
02:22Yeah, his brother also, a brief career in the NHL, his brother also now coaching hockey
02:28as well.
02:29So also looking to have an impact on a next generation, a younger generation of skaters.
02:34Yes.
02:35And the brother, Matthew, 29 years old.
02:37You know, it's just in every way possible.
02:40This is a story I think it's hard for people to fully comprehend, because, you know, everyone
02:45has an idea of celebrities or of other people in their lives about how their careers are
02:51going to go and how they're going to be in our lives.
02:54This is not the way anyone expected the final chapter to be in such a senseless, horrible
02:59act.
03:00No, and I mean, he was on pace probably to become, I would say, at least top 10 American
03:05players of all time.
03:06Yeah.
03:07Yeah.
03:08He was going up there.
03:09If not top five.
03:10Yeah.
03:12the Austin Matthews of the world.
03:15And yes, that's where Johnny Goudreau was certainly heading.
03:17And at 31, he still had many more years left in him.
03:21And, you know, I mean, this is a guy we've seen the potential three times scoring 30
03:25goals or more, seven times making an all-star team.
03:28Yes, the hockey version of Johnny Goudreau had still many chapters left to be written.
03:35Sad, sad day today.
03:36All right, Matt, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
03:38We appreciate it.
03:39Absolutely.
