00:00I don't have anything to laugh about.
00:04Are you all right?
00:05Yep.
00:11Good afternoon, everyone, welcome to our pre-match press conference.
00:15We'll start off with Anton from Sky.
00:17Hiya.
00:18You're not long off the training pitch, one player that wasn't out there today
00:22was Neil Moppe, I'm just wondering if there's an update on his position?
00:25Yeah, there's a possible situation where I'll be leaving the club,
00:28there's nothing guaranteed yet, but he will be travelling over
00:32and seeing if that deal can happen.
00:34You were pretty open last week about the budgetary restrictions
00:37coming towards the end of the window,
00:41with the potential departure of Neil Moppe,
00:42does that mean you're more confident potentially bringing more players in?
00:45Not necessarily, I mean, the money is absorbed into the club in different ways,
00:49so we'll have to wait and see, and it's not just money,
00:51you understand, it's the availability at this late stage of the window,
00:55who's out there, who could be done, who might not be able to be done,
00:58that sort of thing, but yeah, that'll be coming at us as it does,
01:03when we've got a chance to operate, we will.
01:05We were told Oriol Mangala's one of the players that potentially
01:08the mood is getting closer towards,
01:10I presume you're not going to say too much because you don't want to jinx it,
01:12but how important would it be to sign a...
01:14I don't think my words can jinx it, I'm not superstitious,
01:16but no, he's a player who is making his way over,
01:20but there's still a lot to do with the details of any deal,
01:23as there always is, of course, but there's got a chance of us
01:27getting him over and seeing if that deal can be done.
01:30How important would it be to add a sentiment builder at his stature?
01:34I think it's important to add any players,
01:35you know, he's got a bit more know-how than the other signers
01:38we've brought in, I've been played in the Premier League a little bit more,
01:41we'll see, but he's got to get here first, and we haven't got him here first,
01:44yeah, sorry, so we'll see if the deal gets done.
01:48Given the start you've had in the Premier League,
01:51how refreshing is it, I suppose, to potentially bring in one or two new signings before them in the club?
01:56Yeah, I mean, we're trying to be active,
01:59you know, people sometimes forget that,
02:01we've been as active as we could be with the signings,
02:03and trying to bring in players who can operate immediately
02:07and also grow into the club and the league,
02:09that's a big challenge, and so we want them to do that,
02:12and obviously the players who have been here before are super proud of everyone here,
02:16what they've given to the cause, that's for sure, and that remains,
02:18you know, they've given a lot over the last couple of seasons,
02:20but the players who have been here, I mean, the added players coming in,
02:23we want them to get that feeling for the club and that attachment to the club,
02:26and the same work ethic to go and deliver.
02:28I know you say every game is a big game, but considering the start of the season,
02:32how much of a relief would it be if you managed to score the first goal in a different tempo?
02:36Yeah, I mean, it's not just every game's a big game,
02:38people forget last season, I think we had one point out of five games,
02:41so, you know, it's not new territory, unfortunately that is,
02:45obviously we don't design it like that, I can assure you,
02:48but, you know, last season we had a tough start of the season,
02:50it can happen and you don't want it,
02:52you know, and we had 11 v 11 on the first two games of last season,
02:56we lost 1-0 and 4-0, you know, so,
02:59they're reminders of the truth of the Premier League and how difficult it is,
03:01you have to be on your situation, on your performance level, sorry, all the time,
03:05you know, and I think that's a reminder to all of us, you know, where you've got to be,
03:09we didn't want that, as I said, but it's there and it's real,
03:12so now we've got to react on it and make sure we look after ourselves in the next one.
03:16Sure, I appreciate it.
03:17Thanks a lot, Sir Stuart.
03:19Excuse me.
03:22Sir, because the international break is next,
03:24I just wonder how important it is to get a positive result this weekend
03:27to stop some of the noise about Everton?
03:31Well, you want a positive result all the time, you know,
03:32we don't deliberately make bad news,
03:37it's come our way from a couple of performances that have not been strong enough,
03:40so now it's correcting that and correcting the way that we're playing to go and win, of course,
03:44but, you know, the noise around here has been around for a long time,
03:49so we've been trying and working very hard to change the narrative and the feel,
03:52and it's difficult, and if you don't win games, that, of course, adds to it,
03:56you know, so it's our responsibility and my responsibility as manager
03:59to make sure we do turn the corner and change and get results,
04:02and along with performances, you know, there was a good sign the other night,
04:05albeit with all due respect, I said afterwards to Doncaster,
04:08you know, we should take care of business in that game, on paper,
04:11we know it's not that easy, they pushed us really close last season at their place,
04:15and I thought we gave a very strong second half,
04:18and I reminded the players of the freedom that comes when you're playing like that,
04:21to go and play and the funds go with you,
04:23and I said, but we have to be the start point,
04:25the funds have been there forever and they will be,
04:26so we have to start that process when they get behind the team
04:29and can, you know, smell a good performance and they can feel a good performance,
04:33and I think second half we did that, and now we've got to do it, like I said,
04:35with all due respect to Doncaster and the Premier League, against the Premier League outfit.
04:39Is it difficult to get the players to play with the freedom that you want, when the pressure is on?
04:42Yeah, of course, but the players here, you know, another thing we've spoken as a group about,
04:46they've had some incredibly pressurised situations here in the last two years,
04:51and before I was here, you know, I've been here, what, 20 months, even before that,
04:55I mean, they've had some incredibly tough times,
04:57and I couldn't be more proud of these players, they've been incredible at what they've given,
05:01and now we've got to give more, that's just the demand of a footballer,
05:03and that should be the demand, by the way, you know, whenever you think you've given enough, you haven't,
05:07there's always another step, there's always another game,
05:09there's always another performance that needs taking care of,
05:12that's what we're going to do, go and take care of ourselves.
05:14Coleman and Garner came back, are they OK, and is there anything on Bradshaw?
05:20Yeah, with Shea and, excuse me, Jimmy,
05:24we had to monitor the minutes, be careful, they've been,
05:28kind of wanted to come back, and been free to come back, but with not enough training, really,
05:31so I was really pleased with their performances and how they went about it,
05:34so that adds a bit more depth to us.
05:37Gerrard's still a bit of time away, Youssef's obviously a bit of time away as well,
05:40and Pato's making sensible strides back, we knew that would take a bit of time,
05:45so we're still three very strong players and very good players missing,
05:48and a couple who are nearing to full fitness, but not quite.
05:53Thanks, Stuart, we'll go to Julia.
05:58Can I just ask, regarding outgoings, is there a cut-off that you and Kevin Fowler
06:05may have decided, such as, would they have to go today in order to be able to get replacements?
06:10Well, I mean, you do hear about last-minute deals, I've been involved in a couple myself
06:14down my years of management, but you'd prefer to get them done quicker, obviously,
06:18but it doesn't always work like that, so we'll be around and monitoring situations as far as we can,
06:23as long as we've got the finances to obviously put it in place,
06:25there's no point in sitting there if you haven't,
06:28but we'll be monitoring the situations of other possibles as the day goes on, today and tomorrow.
06:35You mentioned before, I think it was a point after the first five games last time,
06:38in the first three Premier League games, it was defeat, hopefully,
06:41not the same stat by the end of this weekend.
06:44What do you put that down to, how difficult is it?
06:46Is it because the window's still open, there's still changes, is it pre-season?
06:49No, it's just we haven't performed well enough in the games, you know,
06:52we've had patches when we could have been in front and we should have been in front,
06:56but we didn't take them chances, and that was a bit like last year,
06:58but we haven't seen games through properly.
07:01There's no passing the buck on that,
07:03you know, our performances have to be for 97 minutes or 93 or 97,
07:07whatever they play nowadays, we have to be on our performance levels all of the time,
07:11that's what the Premier League insists upon.
07:13They've played two very strong sides,
07:15you know, a couple of sides who not only were strong in the first place,
07:17I think Brighton spent £200 million and Tottenham spent £140 or something like that,
07:22and they're already strong sides, so that doesn't guarantee they win, by the way.
07:26I mean, we've proved that, we've played strong sides since I've been here and beat them,
07:29but I would say they've enhanced their capabilities and their possibilities
07:33by spending that amount of money.
07:35We've spent our own bit and we're trying to challenge our players to keep rising,
07:38the players who have been here and the new players to adapt
07:40and challenge ourselves quickly to go and press us forward as a group.
07:44You made changes, obviously, against Doncaster and it was a great result,
07:47and Dye, has he done enough to, you know, say now we could do it in the Premier League?
07:52I think the game played out what I probably expected,
07:55you know, I think Tim was very good again and he's been with us the longest period,
07:59Illy a bit like that as well, and I thought he'd be sharp,
08:01particularly second half, coming off the wide area, which he's shown before,
08:05and Jasper's going to take a bit more time, it looks like to me,
08:07and that was what my gut feeling was, and Jake as well, learning what it is,
08:11just the nuts and bolts, as I call it, as a centre-half in the Premier League.
08:15But they're all good players, it's how quickly they can push into the first team,
08:19so certainly we've got enough from them to put doubt in our thinking,
08:23and when we go, right, OK, how can we make this work and make it work better?
08:26Of course, that's the challenge.
08:28Previously, you've liked to try and loan out some of the younger players in the squad,
08:31to give them that match experience week in, week out.
08:34Given it is a thin squad, there's still injuries,
08:37the likes of Harrison Armstrong, Roman Dixon,
08:39I assume they will be staying and won't be looking for...
08:42Yeah, that's the obvious knock-on effect of not with a big squad,
08:45you know, you can't let all the youngsters go out.
08:47You know, we saw last season and already this season,
08:49there's a lot been on the bench and around it.
08:52It's good for their development in one way,
08:53because they get a feel, particularly Harrison and Roman,
08:56because they're young and they're getting a feel of it,
08:58whether they're getting on the pitch or not,
08:59and Harrison has got on the pitch and obviously Roman playing, so that's good.
09:03In the ideal world, yes, they'll be out there playing first-team football,
09:06in my opinion, now, because I think they're ready,
09:08but jumping into the Premier League is a different prospect
09:11and you have to have the chance to do that.
09:13But being around the group is a definite.
09:15They've been training with us all the time,
09:17they've been in every group more or less pre-season,
09:20and currently, so, yeah, they'll stay in for now,
09:22and then we'll see what tomorrow brings.
09:24Thanks, Julian. We'll go to Rob at Five Live.
09:28Sean, you've spoken about, obviously,
09:30the importance of experience at a high-pressure time like this.
09:33I just wonder if you've got a little glimpse mid-week
09:36and how exciting is it to maybe think about
09:39what that freshness of new players can do in the Premier League
09:42and how that can maybe lift things?
09:43Yeah, freshness can change a group,
09:45but they've got to change the group on the pitch.
09:46They can change it in the training area and the feel
09:48and new voices and different characters,
09:51but it's on-the-pitch performances that are really key.
09:53And are you seeing that in training?
09:55I'm seeing patches of it, yeah.
09:56I'm seeing players who are beginning to get a feel for what it is.
09:59You know, these players are good players, as I've suggested,
10:01but they're not all necessarily just Premier League-ready players.
10:04They're a whole different ballgame.
10:05You know, I've been Premier League manager
10:07for what I think is coming up,
10:08I think it's 10 years this year, actually.
10:10So, the one thing I've learned is it's very rare that players,
10:13literally, you just throw them on the pitch and they just rip it up.
10:15And usually, if they do, they've cost a heck of a lot of money.
10:18So, we've got very good players, I think,
10:20and we've got these younger players developing
10:22and the new players in who are young in their Premier League age,
10:25not in physical age.
10:2623, 24 is a decent age for a footballer.
10:28What I mean is, in your Premier League learning.
10:30And that's no disrespect from the leagues I've come from.
10:32It's just a different league.
10:33You know, I've spoken to managers from all over the world
10:35in my 10 years in the Premier League,
10:37and they'll tell you it's very difficult for players
10:40to just literally grip the Premier League
10:42and get it working straight away,
10:44unless they're obviously of a certain ilk
10:46and a certain level of the market.
10:49I just wanted to ask you about Kieran Trippier.
10:51Nothing to do with transfers, but just as a player...
10:53He's my favourite, as similar as that.
10:54I've told the world, I've told him for years.
10:55Well, you've said it there.
10:56I mean, he's retired from international football today.
11:00I just wonder, from where he started and where you saw him to where he is now...
11:04I couldn't be more proud of him for what he's done.
11:05You know, he's worked hard at his game.
11:07He's looked after himself.
11:08He's still a fine player.
11:11Fantastic for club and country when called upon.
11:14You know, he's one who I think has been a joy to work with, a joy to watch.
11:20And I hope he continues doing that, although not for the international scene.
11:22But I'm sure everyone will think he's done very well for England,
11:25as well as his clubs as well.
11:27Thanks, Rob. We'll go to Will.
11:35Sean, you mentioned the knock-on effects of a small squad.
11:37You've only got one senior-recognised left-back in Vitaly Mikhalenko.
11:41Is that just a sign of the times, really?
11:42You've got to make do with what you have?
11:44Yeah, I mean, you know, we had to look at the group
11:47and you've only got so much money you can physically put into a team and a side.
11:52And it's not for the one to try him, but it's who's available,
11:55who's available at the right levels, you know, and it makes it very difficult.
11:58You said last week that any offers you'd have to look at
12:01when it comes into Dominic Calvert-Lewin?
12:02Well, the club will. I won't, trust me.
12:04I've been going, please don't offer that.
12:06But the club will have to look at it.
12:07Have there been any offers for him?
12:09Have you held any talks with Dominic about his future?
12:12Is the contract still on the table for him?
12:14No, we're just carrying on as we always have done.
12:17With Dom and all the other players, trying to stay open with our dialogue.
12:20That's it.
12:21And in terms of the squad, you've brought Azmi Begovic in.
12:24Has that changed the goalkeeping pecking orders as Gelba's in his stage number two?
12:28Yeah, well, it's not really about the pecking order.
12:29It's more, you know, someone who knows the club, obviously very experienced,
12:32allowed the young goalkeepers, because behind the first team, of course,
12:35which is vital that we correct that, I understand that,
12:38but we've still got to have a development plan.
12:39We're still going to have people who are growing and learning.
12:42And goalkeepers, I think we spoke about this,
12:43it's a very difficult job to do that in-house.
12:46So to get them goalkeepers out playing was really important.
12:49And Az is a very, very rounded professional as well.
12:53So to bring him in and around the group is good.
12:55Any more outgoings you see after Neil Morpatt?
12:57We'll see tomorrow.
12:59There's, you know, possibles on other players.
13:01We'll see, more might develop later today,
13:03but nothing definite at the moment and see what tomorrow brings.
13:07Thanks. Any further questions in the open section before we move on?
