00:45MTV's End Your Dirty Black Summer with Danzig Contest.
00:50If you're looking for good, clean fun, you better stay home.
00:59Hello, I'm Ricky Rackman here in Munich, Germany, and this is the Headbangers Ball.
01:19In the background you see the Glockenspiel, one of the most famous clocks in the world.
01:22Ricky Rackman here. Now don't freak out, I know what you're saying.
01:24What happened to all this hair?
01:26I told you last week on the Headbangers Ball that I was going to cut my hair off, and I did.
01:29And I'd like to spend time explaining why, but I'll do that next week on the Headbangers Ball.
01:33Tonight the Headbangers Ball is coming to you from Munich, Germany.
01:36Part of the End Your Dirty Black Summer with Danzig.
01:39Well, it's cold, so it's far from being summer right now, but we are in Munich, Germany.
01:42We've got plenty of stuff.
01:44Tonight's show is compiled over three days of being in Munich, Germany.
01:47We're going to go check out this very cool castle.
01:49We're going to hang out with Danzig.
01:50We're going to go over to the Circus Krohn and check out Danzig's live show.
01:53It's going to be a killer show.
01:55But right now, since the Glockenspiel is chiming 11 o'clock, that means it's time for a countdown to the ball.
02:01We've got the top nine videos on the way, but right now we're going to start it off with a world premiere.
02:05Check it out.
02:06A world premiere from the biggest band in the world.
02:08A band that's played even here many times, Guns N' Roses.
02:11And right now, here's a world premiere from Guns N' Roses.
02:13Here's yesterday.
02:16Ricky Rackman here with Glenn Danzig and Eerie Vaughn.
02:18And in the background is the Neuschwanstein Castle.
02:22And I guess you guys are in the midst of your European tour right now, right?
02:25Yes.
02:26How's it been going so far?
02:28Don't give me a hard time. You can start.
02:29It's been going really good.
02:31And how many dates have you done in Europe so far?
02:33Too many.
02:34And are you enjoying it? Are you having a good time?
02:36Especially when we take you up to this castle?
02:38The shows have been really good. Everything else, I can't say that.
02:42And tomorrow night you guys are playing in Germany.
02:45And you played here before, right?
02:47Yes.
02:48And the German crowds love you, right?
02:50I guess they do. I've been here three times.
02:53The horses are going crazy in the background.
02:55But from what I understand, I guess the record sales have been real good in Germany.
02:59And the German fans have really been behind Danzig.
03:01Yes.
03:02They have.
03:03Selling more than a lot of people that sell a lot in the States.
03:07So, that's good. And we're going to be going up to the castle to check this out.
03:10You guys have never been up here before, right?
03:12No.
03:13We didn't want to come this time, Ricky.
03:15They wouldn't go through this twice.
03:17So, we're going to go up to the castle and we'll be back.
03:19It's the End Your Dirty Black Summer with Danzig.
03:21And we're in Germany. Stick around.
03:27Back here in Germany, we're overlooking the lovely German countryside.
03:31And it's a pretty nice view here.
03:33So, tell me a little bit about Germany so far. What do you think?
03:36I mean, being here a couple of days.
03:37Germany is cool. It's very cool.
03:39You know, shows have been good. Kids are real cool.
03:41It's just the food is terrible and the hotels suck.
03:44But other than that...
03:45Other than that, it's fine.
03:46Do you tell a real big difference throughout Europe going to a lot of different...
03:49like Germany as opposed to London and the crowds?
03:52Yeah.
03:54You want to elaborate on it?
03:55Yeah. Well, the crowds are different everywhere, even in America.
03:59They're much different each area you go to.
04:01They also have these little, you know, idiosyncrasies that are just their own, each area.
04:10And it's the same in Germany.
04:11Hamburg is different than Cologne.
04:13And, you know, Munich and Berlin are much different.
04:17Do you want to go ahead and start?
04:18Since you're the first band I've interviewed with my new hair,
04:20I know you've been dying to give me a hard time.
04:22And I figured that you would be the best one to do it.
04:24So, go right ahead.
04:27Are we done?
04:28Yeah. That's enough. You're ruined.
04:31It's okay. Now, everybody's going to do that.
04:32But I figured I might as well start off,
04:34because I know you would give me a harder time about the new hair than anybody else would.
04:38You'll have to make up your mind. Pearl Jam or New Yorkers.
04:41Ow, ow, ow, ow.
04:42You know what this shirt symbolizes?
04:44This shirt symbolizes that it's cold out and it's a warm shirt.
04:47And that's it. Period.
04:48Looks like it's a little tablecloth from a tiny restaurant.
04:50Okay, here we go.
04:51We'll be back learning out more interesting stuff with the guys in Danzig.
04:55As Headbangers ball into Dirty Black Summer with Danzig in Germany continues.
05:03We're in Germany hanging out with Danzig.
05:06The things we do for this segment.
05:08We're here in pouring rain.
05:09Anyway, but this is pretty much the European weather, right?
05:12Yeah, it's wonderful.
05:13That's one of the things I like.
05:14It's very miserable.
05:15It fits right in with our whole way of life.
05:17That's the new miserable theme is why you're making us stand out here in the pouring rain.
05:22I'm not making you stand out here in the pouring rain.
05:24They are.
05:25They are. We're doing it for you.
05:27Anyways, we're going to be playing.
05:28You're making us walk in circles, okay?
05:29Okay, well, let's go inside.
05:31We're going to go inside and then we're going to talk about the tour,
05:33about videos and all sorts of cool Danzig stuff.
05:35Right now, let's play Pearl Jam, who stole my flannel shirt to give it to all the lumberjacks that don't have any.
05:40Here's a live.
05:43Built by King Ludwig of Bavaria.
05:45In the background is the Bavarian Alps.
05:47That castle right there is called Schwanstein.
05:51I think I'm pronouncing it right.
05:52That's where King Ludwig grew up.
05:53We'll talk a little bit more about this castle.
05:55Schwanstein.
05:56Really?
05:57Yeah.
05:58I think that's much better.
05:59Actually, not being one into views and stuff, but this is really a pretty incredible view.
06:05Tell me, do you get the chance to do any sightseeing when you're out on the road?
06:09Checking out any places?
06:10Only if we have a day off and it's something we really want to see.
06:13We got to go to the cathedral in Cologne and I shot some of the gargoyles at my Super 8,
06:19you know, moving camera and a bunch of other stuff.
06:22We got to climb to the tower, Jesse and I.
06:26Sometimes, but a lot of times, we don't get to do anything.
06:29We did get to go to Loch Ness.
06:31Tell me about that.
06:32That was excellent.
06:33We walked all around, did a bunch of filming for the Danzig documentary movie.
06:37Tell me about the documentary movie.
06:40Basically, it's just us filming the tour and whenever we do get a chance to go around,
06:47people following us around, filming the shows.
06:50We're going to be filming at Irvine, like a big camera set.
06:54Halloween night?
06:55Yeah, Halloween night.
06:57You're pretty into a lot of the history of stuff, aren't you?
07:00Yeah, well, in a minute we're going to go inside and I just showed you a couple of paintings.
07:03I wouldn't mind doing some of these little segments, which is real violent stuff from the past.
07:11Are there certain type of artists that you are really into?
07:15I mean, for instance, you got Geiger to do the album cover,
07:18which some people probably know better off from The Alien and stuff like that.
07:22Yeah, Geiger and then we've got Simon Beasley who did Batman, Judge Dredd and Lobo.
07:28He's doing the cover for the How the Gods Kill 45.
07:31I had an artist, Michael Kaluda, do a cover for me for a record that I've got coming out,
07:36which is soundtrack stuff.
07:38And then, as far as these kind of painters, there's a great German painter called Arnold Böchlin.
07:43And he did lots of Wagnerian kind of stuff and mermaids and that kind of stuff.
07:48And being in Germany, I mean, both of you have German descent, right?
07:51Yeah, my dad's side is from Germany.
07:53And you?
07:54And I'm German, Italian and Scottish.
07:56There you go.
07:57We're going to be back talking to these guys.
07:59Check out some pretty interesting stuff in the castle
08:01when Headbangers Ball continues from Germany with Danzig.
08:09We're inside of the castle right now and this is the throne hall.
08:12And King Ludwig of Bavaria built this hall and he spent like a whole lot of money,
08:17especially like painting some of the roof in gold leaf.
08:20And the people of the town supposedly thought he was crazy
08:23and he was found dead in the lake, either committed suicide or was murdered.
08:28And there's sort of a mystery around this.
08:30Anyway, this is the throne hall and he was supposed to have his throne right there,
08:33but unfortunately he died before they even put the throne here.
08:36So it's kind of sad, a little sadness in the story.
08:39Yeah.
08:40Any comments?
08:42No.
08:43Enjoying the castle so far?
08:44It's pretty cool, a lot of cool paintings around here.
08:47We're going to take a look at it in a little bit.
08:49But right now let's talk a little bit about Danzig videos.
08:53Tell us about the latest video, about How the Gods Kill.
08:57How the Gods Kill is a video that I got to direct myself
09:01without having anyone else around there to like give us grief.
09:06And I think it came out really good.
09:08The rest of the guys in the band really like it.
09:10Yeah, it's the best one by far.
09:11Now are you happy with the way some of the videos,
09:13I mean all the videos have a different feel to them,
09:16you know, from Killer Wolf is completely different from Dirty Black Summer.
09:21I mean has there ever been a video that came out that you thought
09:24was very epitomized the like Danzig feel or Danzig music?
09:28I don't know if we've really gotten to that point yet,
09:30but this new one, How the Gods Kill, is probably the closest that we've come.
09:34You know, since Glenn handled it from start to finish,
09:37it's got more of our vibe in it, you know.
09:39So is there a theme to this video?
09:42No, we did incorporate the Giger character, which is a special effects guy.
09:47I know Norman Cabrera did the character.
09:50He works with Rick Baker and a bunch of other people.
09:52And it's kind of cool.
09:53Rick Baker's real famous for doing like American Werewolf and London and King Kong,
09:56stuff like that.
09:57Yeah, and so since I got to direct it, I mean I know what these guys are like on stage.
10:02Part of it's performance, part of it's a storyline.
10:05And usually it seems like a director just doesn't know what to do with these guys
10:09or even with me or whatever.
10:11They just kind of put you in front of a camera,
10:13and the director usually is supposed to tell you,
10:15okay, do this and do that and you do this and that.
10:17And none of these guys ever do any of that stuff.
10:20So this time I got to say to Erie, okay, in this shot, you know,
10:23I mean, it was easy, just real smooth.
10:26And who would know the band Danzig better than the band.
10:29Exactly.
10:30Okay, we'll be back talking to these guys.
10:31We're going to check out some of the art in this castle
10:33and find out about the tour and the album and everything else
10:35as the Headbangers Ball continues from Germany.
10:37And right now here's video from Guns N' Roses.
10:39Here's Patience.
10:41He was the patron protector.
10:44Here he's killing a dragon.
10:46And I guess this castle up here was going to be an addition to this castle
10:51on another mountain, but I guess the guy got killed.
10:53Kind of a little interesting.
10:55We're going to give you a little bit of history too,
10:57as well as talking about Danzig and playing videos,
10:59that if you've ever seen the famous castle to the kingdom
11:03at Disneyland or Disney World,
11:05that was basically modeled after this castle here.
11:07Did you know that?
11:09I think you're lying.
11:10I am, but it makes for a good story.
11:12Good copy, yeah.
11:13Anyway, let's go.
11:14Actually, that is true, but let's go on to the set a little bit.
11:17Danzig, you've got three albums, a lot of stuff you're playing,
11:21a lot of stuff from all three albums.
11:23Yeah, we play a good selection from all three.
11:26I think we, well, you know, I'm trying to think of...
11:30Do you ever do any Misfits or Sam Haynes songs?
11:32No.
11:33They just put that in the past?
11:35The band called the Misfits or Sam Haynes?
11:37No, it's called Danzig.
11:39Why do you keep asking questions about that?
11:41Do you want me to just pop you one?
11:43I was just curious.
11:44There's people out there that are a little bit curious about stuff like that.
11:47Here's my viewpoint on this.
11:48This is it.
11:49And, you know, both those bands,
11:52there was a time when those bands were around,
11:55and the magazines were around then,
11:57and they should have asked questions about those bands at that time,
12:00and not just those two bands,
12:02but also about bands like The Velvet Underground and Bauhaus
12:05and lots of other bands like that.
12:07And they didn't ask the questions,
12:10and now they want to ask the questions,
12:12and the bands are gone.
12:13Well, you blew it.
12:14You're music magazines.
12:15You should be on top of music, and you're not.
12:17So it takes these bands, legends, to live on,
12:21and then you want to ask questions about it with these other people.
12:24Well, you should have asked them a long time ago.
12:27They should live up to their names of being music magazines.
12:31Okay, we're going to come back and talk about all the new Danzig stuff
12:34and all sorts of interesting stuff like that when we continue.
12:37We're in the castle that I can't pronounce very well, but Glenn does it.
12:40Neuschwanstein.
12:42Can you do it?
12:43No.
12:44Okay.
12:45We'll be back as Headbangers Ball continues with Danzig from Germany.
12:48Right now, here's Pantera.
12:49It's a good song.
12:50Walk.
12:51Here in the stalactite room, I guess, with Irivan and Glenn Danzig,
12:56and the King Ludwig, I guess, was quite a different king to build a room,
13:00such as this, in his palace.
13:02It's a cave. I wish I had one.
13:04This seems like something, a new addition to your house,
13:06something just like this.
13:08Yeah, it would be very cool.
13:10Now, later on the show, we're going to be going to the Circus Krohn,
13:12I think I'm pronouncing it right, to watch Danzig play live,
13:16and I know people that watch the Ball have seen me say this a lot of times,
13:20and you guys, I know, are probably sick to death of me hearing it.
13:22I'm a big Danzig fan, always have been.
13:24I've seen all the shows since the first album,
13:27and you've got a lot of material to choose from,
13:30and is it hard to pick?
13:32Do you say, okay, since we've got the new album out,
13:34we need to play a lot of new stuff,
13:36or do you always kind of rearrange the sets?
13:39Yeah, well, we just play whatever we feel like playing.
13:42We have personal favorites, and we know that our fans have favorites,
13:47and then, of course, the newer stuff, we're not really sick of playing yet,
13:51so we like playing the newer stuff.
13:54What would be some of your personal favorites?
13:56My personal favorite?
13:57Live.
13:58Yeah, I like Heart of the Devil, How the Gods Kill,
14:01songs that really get the crowd in, like Snakes of Christ, stuff like that.
14:04Definitely.
14:09Ricky Rackman here, we're at the Circus Kron with Glenn Danzig,
14:12band sound checking in the background.
14:14So, so far, the German tour, the European tour has been going okay.
14:18After Europe, where does it go?
14:20We go right back to America, start out on the West Coast,
14:24up in Seattle, and as you can hear, these guys are really loud.
14:29So, then we end up down in Irvine on Halloween.
14:33Yeah, I don't know if I, I think I told you this earlier,
14:35but the show isn't for a couple weeks.
14:37My friends tried to get tickets, and it's like, it's just about sold out,
14:41which you guys seem pretty surprised.
14:43Obviously, there's a lot more Danzig fans now,
14:45the fan base is growing, must make you feel pretty good.
14:47Yeah, well, and what's cool about it is,
14:50it proves that, you know, the record companies are wrong.
14:53There are a lot of people out there that want to hear loud, obnoxious,
14:57violent music, you know, that's what they want, you know.
15:01So, the Danzig fan base is growing,
15:03and right now we're going to play a video from them,
15:05and if we don't get to see you later, thanks a lot for hanging out with us.
15:08And most of you, I'll be at most of the Danzig shows,
15:11so definitely, I recommend it.
15:13Right now, here's Danzig with her Black Wings.
15:17Headbangers Ball coming to you from Germany,
15:19still hanging out with Glenn Danzig,
15:20and this tour, you've been in Europe for a couple months,
15:22and then you're going to hit the States.
15:23Does it get kind of, like, tedious after a while,
15:25just always playing the shows, going from town to town to town?
15:28Yeah, what we've been doing is,
15:31since it's, like, the longest tour, we've never been here this long,
15:35we've always been here for about four weeks,
15:37and then went back to America.
15:39This time we've been here,
15:41at the end of this European, we'll be at least two months,
15:43and we didn't really do a lot of dates in England,
15:46we did, like, four or five dates just in England.
15:49We should have done probably just two or three weeks alone there.
15:53It does get kind of tedious, so what we do is,
15:55we've been changing the set around from night to night,
15:58and just before, when I was sitting on the stage,
16:00we changed the set around again.
16:02Also, we're fine-tuning it for America,
16:05so that, you know, the set moves the way we want it,
16:08when we get on stage.
16:10Kind of seeing what the reaction is from the fans,
16:12to see which songs stay and which songs go?
16:15No, we're just moving them around,
16:17we change certain songs when we get tired of doing a song,
16:19we just, like, a few songs in the set,
16:21we just say, okay, let's do this song tonight,
16:23and we just pick out certain songs,
16:25we feel like doing that night,
16:27and if people don't want to hear them, that's tough.
16:29I noticed during soundcheck before,
16:31which I was really glad that you're doing Sistinas,
16:33I guess, in the set,
16:35and I was just curious, being a fan of Danzig,
16:37that song has got so much emotion,
16:39it's got a real weird, eerie feeling,
16:41what is, no pun intended,
16:43where are you coming from with that song?
16:45That sounds like a really stupid question,
16:47but what's that song about?
16:49Well, if you read the lyrics, it's pretty much about
16:51loneliness, depression, isolation,
16:53that kind of stuff.
16:55It feels like that.
16:57Thanks a lot.
16:59More Headbangers Ball coming to you from Munich, Germany,
17:01is End Your Dirty Black Summer with Danzig.
17:11Here with Chuck and John from Danzig,
17:13and you guys just finished soundchecking,
17:15and everything in Germany going okay so far?
17:17No.
17:19Not having a good time?
17:21Oh, it's alright.
17:23I noticed the hat, big golfer?
17:25Nope.
17:27Have you been doing any kind of things
17:29to keep yourself sane during the tour?
17:31Nope, sitting in the hotel room, drying.
17:33Watching a lot of CNN?
17:35A lot of CNN.
17:37Been collecting any German cereal boxes,
17:39or expanding on your collection?
17:41So anyways...
17:43Doing some stuff, like me and Jesse and Glenn
17:45have been working out a little bit,
17:47and running here and there,
17:49trying to keep some sort of shape.
17:51And are you looking forward to getting back to the States?
17:53Hell yeah. Can't wait to get home.
17:55Now, is that a way a lot of bands do when an album comes out,
17:57they play it over in Europe?
17:59Because I noticed, I mean, that seems to be a trend
18:01that a lot of bands, when an album is released,
18:03they go over to Europe and try the material over there first.
18:05Yeah, they want to get Europe over with first.
18:07Get it out of the way, and then make your way to America.
18:09Plus, you know, we can work on our set list and everything.
18:13You can get everything just perfect,
18:15and work all the kinks out of the system.
18:17When you start out with a different crew,
