00:00So, uh, Adam Kaufman joins us now from, uh, Boston.
00:08Of course you can see him on sports grid across the board.
00:10He's on all kinds of shows.
00:11God bless him.
00:12Uh, he and I have known each other forever and I still hate him.
00:16So, um, the Red Sox won last night.
00:20Finally.
00:21I mean, their season's been going down the drain, but they're four out of that wild card.
00:28Do you still, and does people in Boston still believe that they can write the ship and get
00:34a wild card at the very least?
00:36Cause that's all they're playing for.
00:39Well, listen, as you well know, Boston is a city filled with optimists.
00:44So clearly everyone is thinking high on the Red Sox and their chances that nevermind making
00:50the playoffs as a wild card.
00:52It's a world series or bust.
00:53No, I mean, look, I, I personally am not high on their chances at this point.
00:58Now, if you would talk to me right around the trade deadline a few weeks back, I would
01:02have sung you a different song, but obviously things have gone south of late and they've
01:06really failed to get out of their own way.
01:09The pitching has been a problem.
01:10And like you said, they're sitting with this deficit with the third and final wild card
01:15spot in the American league and clearly multiple teams in front of them as well.
01:19Is there time?
01:20Sure.
01:21You know, we're talking about roughly 30 games remaining in the regular season.
01:24They are capable of making a run.
01:26It's just, you're asking a lot in terms of knocking one of these teams out that is simply
01:32playing better than them in front of them.
01:34It's not going to be easy, impossible.
01:36No, but not going to be easy.
01:38I just don't think unfortunately they're built for it right now and, and shame on them because
01:42they could have done more at the deadline to address some of that.
01:45And they obviously could have done much more coming into the season to set themselves up
01:49better for success.
01:51Not too differently from a team in Foxborough that's getting ready to kick off at season
01:55a little bit.
01:57So they play next at Detroit, then they go to city field for three games with the Mets,
02:04but then they have the white socks at home.
02:06That's easy pickings.
02:08Then they have the board or three at home and then they play four at the boogie down
02:15in the Bronx against their rival Yankees.
02:19So like that takes you to mid September.
02:23How do you think they'll do in those types of series with the Yankees, O's, White Sox
02:28and Mets and even the Tigers, which are up next?
02:31Yeah, I just don't see how you can outline that and how someone can hear that and say,
02:37yeah, no, they're going to make up ground.
02:38They'll be in the playoff position by the time those series, you know, mid September
02:42rolls around.
02:43I just think it's, it's a daunting road at this point in time.
02:47There's way too much inconsistency in this team.
02:49The bullpen continues to be a problem.
02:52Again, the starters are, are, you know, just a little kind of unreliable across the board,
02:58you know, with very rare exception.
03:00The only thing that you can generally count on is that there's going to be offensive production.
03:03There are going to be runs.
03:04The problem is they're going to allow a bunch of runs as well.
03:07And so you mentioned it, you know, there are some easier series in there, but I'm just,
03:13I'm past the point, maybe it's the better in me, Scott, but I'm past the point of taking
03:17teams like the Tigers or the White Sox for granted or the Orioles while they're reeling
03:22it at points in time as well.
03:23I just, anyone, it's, it's not quite the any given Sunday, if you will, but I mean, we've
03:29seen the White Sox or even a team like the Athletics who I'm on today, you know, the,
03:34these teams, I realized like this year's White Sox are more like last year's A's than being
03:38comparable this year.
03:39But these teams that have nothing to play for are sort of the most dangerous ones.
03:44They're pesky, they're annoying.
03:47They don't quit.
03:48They don't get out of the way.
03:49And there was just a little too much mid-season cruise control out of the Red Sox for a team
03:53that really couldn't justify playing that way.
03:59So before we talk about the Patriots, I wanted to tell you, I haven't seen you since my birthday
04:04at the end of July.
04:05And I got a pair of, I got two pairs of kicks for basketball.
04:11One was the new KDs and I pulled out the old new KDs that I got last Christmas today
04:19because I left my, I played ball the other night, Monday night, and I left the soaking
04:24wet 400 pound watered down shirt that I wore in my bag on top of my jaws and the sweat
04:32just permeated for two days and the water dripped into my shoes for two days.
04:38Not only did they get soaking wet with sweat smell, but they actually reek.
04:43My jaws now I'm convinced are ruined with smell and reek.
04:48And so today I busted out my new KDs, but the point of this conversation is you won't
04:53believe this.
04:54I got the new tatums for my birthday.
04:57And as you know, not only do I hate Jason Tatum, I hate the Celtics more than any team
05:02on earth in any sport.
05:05So they're the lavender ones.
05:07And I have to say they're bad-ass they're beautiful and I can't wait to play in them,
05:12but I will never admit to anyone that they're tatums.
05:18So when, when I go to play, people are, man, it's got, it's got the JT on there.
05:22People have eyes.
05:23They can see it.
05:24It's got it.
05:25Got it right there on the, on the tongue.
05:26No, no, no.
05:27They're going to go for all.
05:28Those are bad-asses.
05:29And I'm going to say, yeah, I don't know.
05:30I don't know who's there.
05:31I don't know who's she better.
05:33I just sit well, you better, man, you better hope that you don't hoop better than ever
05:38before while we're in the JTs, because you will know you will have an, a deep introspection
05:43as to what that means for you.
05:45You're going to get superstitious about it.
05:47It's going to, you're going to become a Celtics fan.
05:49You're going to be out there wearing a tatum Jersey when all of a sudden done.
05:52Now what's going to happen is that your team's going to go under because they paid two guys
05:58over a half a billion dollars and they can't afford to pay anyone else.
06:02And they're going to have your boy, Richard will be the other best player on the team
06:06for the next 10 years.
06:09That's why someone like Bezos with deep pockets needs to come in and pay the 6 billion to
06:13buy this team and you know, keep paying into that second apron and keep this thing going
06:17for a little while.
06:18They got a window here, Scotty, we don't want to lose it.
06:21So the Patriots are going to be the worst team in the NFL this year.
06:26I don't think so, but they'll be in the conversation.
06:29They'll be a, you know, probably a top five pick again, depending on how all of this shakes
06:33out.
06:34And obviously, and I know part of what I'm here to talk about, whoever winds up being
06:38the starting quarterback for this team to begin the year could potentially dig them
06:41a little bit of a hole.
06:42It may not matter actually, given the schedule and it is, you know, a little overwhelming
06:47at the beginning of the year.
06:48And, and this is also a team that is going to be in all likelihood underdogs in every
06:53single game, pre-season underdogs for all 17 games.
06:58And that's unlikely to change too much along the way.
07:01It's just a, it's a very talent deficient team, unfortunately.
07:05That being said, you got some bad teams there, man.
07:08I mean, you got the Panthers, you got the Broncos, you got some, so it's not like a
07:13runaway under four and a half wins, you know, they're going to be right there at the number
07:17one pick next year.
07:19I think there are some teams that are going to put up a fight for that spot.
07:23So, did May outplay Brissette because I think Brissette sucks and I always have, and I think
07:29the kid's better than him, flat out.
07:32So Drake May unequivocally outplayed Jacoby Brissette in the pre-season games and in recent
07:37weeks during training camp, Gerard Mayo, the head coach, of course, you know, we need to
07:41keep saying that with no Bill Belichick anymore.
07:43He's off doing his litany of media deals at this point in time.
07:46Mayo said just a couple hours ago that he has made a decision on who the starting quarterback
07:51is going to be, but he hasn't told the players yet and therefore he's not telling the media
07:55yet that's going to come tomorrow.
07:57So probably, you know, less than 24 hours from right now, we're going to know whether
08:01it's Brissette or May under center for week one in Cincinnati.
08:06The thing is, I just, I don't understand in what world it wouldn't be Jacoby Brissette.
08:11And that's not me sitting here saying it should be, it's just, this is what the Patriots have
08:15been preaching all the way along.
08:17This is what they have been laying out as the plan.
08:19They wanted to bring in the veteran bridge guy to groom the rookie and not put him out
08:24there before he is ready.
08:26And you can make the case that he's maybe a little bit more ready right now than they
08:30expected him to be as, as we sit here in late August.
08:34But that being said, the offensive line in front of whichever guy it is playing quarterback
08:39is an absolute disaster.
08:41You can't put May out there as it exists right now and risk getting the man literally killed.
08:47Unfortunately, your crash test dummy right now is Jacoby Brissette for at least the first
08:51month of the season.
08:52As far as I see it anyway, I don't know why Mayo is dragging his feet in this announcement
08:57because the only thing that would be the least bit surprising, nevermind, shocking would
09:03be if he says, yes, Drake May is the week one starter.
