00:00Hi, I'm Lillian, and I have the creepiest story to tell you.

00:06I was taken in by my grandma when I was eight years old.

00:09She told the best stories and baked fresh chocolate chip cookies every day.

00:13And life was swell, until she fell down some stairs and broke her hip.

00:17So, I was sent to live with my rich uncle.

00:20He was a businessman, and with him, I was having a pretty good time.

00:23But soon after, uncle's business started having problems.

00:27He went bankrupt and then lost his house.

00:29So, I was packed off to my aunt's place.

00:32Aunt was cool, and she even had a dog, who was adorable.

00:36The three of us had fun.

00:37Oh, until the dog ate something and fell really sick.

00:41He didn't survive.

00:42Aunt ran away to India to heal her heart, and I ran out of relatives and ended up in an orphanage.

00:47It wasn't so bad there, and I even made some friends.

00:50But then they all got adopted, and I was the only one left behind.

00:54Don't be disheartened, Lily.

00:56I'm sure there's a perfectly good family waiting for you out there.

01:01I was convinced that I was just an unlucky person who was destined to be alone.

01:05And as time passed, so did my hope of ever finding a family.

01:09But then, a week after my 17th birthday, something unexpected happened.

01:13The warden called me into her office and told me that a family wanted to adopt me.

01:17And I had to leave for their place the same night.

01:20I found it strange, because the family hadn't even met me.

01:23But the warden said they'd gone through my file and made their decision.

01:26As I packed my things to leave, my heart swelled with happiness at the thought of having my own family.

01:32But when I reached the address I'd been given, my heart drew to my stomach.

01:36It was a run-down motel located next to a cemetery.

01:40Tall iron gates, huge windows, moldy walls.

01:44The place looked terrifying.

01:46Just then, the main door opened, and this lady walked out who looked like she was dressed up for a Halloween party.

01:52Hello. You must be Lillian.

01:54I'm Mrs. Edwards. I'm sorry we couldn't come to pick you up.

01:57My husband and I had a little emergency.

02:00That's okay. It wasn't-

02:01Shh! Do you smell that?

02:03Looks like it's going to rain any second.

02:06Why don't you get your stuff inside and I'll show you around.

02:11I would smile, but I have this condition where my face muscles don't flex the same way anymore.

02:17Mrs. Edwards took me inside the house seconds before it did start raining like crazy.

02:22She showed me around the motel, which was just as creepy from the inside.

02:26And then we went into the dining hall where I met her husband, who seemed just as odd as his wife.

02:31And then, just as I was about to sit at the dinner table, this girl came out of nowhere and pushed me away.

02:37You can't sit here, you ugly toad.

02:39Why not? It's empty.

02:40Don't talk back to me. My house, my rules.

02:43Ivy, can you please calm down?

02:46Jillian, why don't you sit next to me, dear?

02:48Now, Ivy, greet your sister nicely. We must make her feel welcome.

02:52She is not welcome. And she is not my sister.

02:56And with that, Ivy just ran off, leaving Mrs. Edwards making excuses for her behavior.

03:01Mr. Edwards just shook his head apologetically.

03:04He clearly didn't talk much.

03:06After dinner, she showed me to my room, which was facing the freaking cemetery.

03:11I was so creeped out, I couldn't sleep at all.

03:13Finally, I got up to get some water from the kitchen, but I found Ivy and her parents there and stopped short to listen.

03:19What's the matter with you? Jillian must have felt so bad and unwelcome.

03:23And how do you think I feel about this stranger living in my house?

03:27We thought it would be nice for you to have some company.

03:29I told you a hundred times, I don't need company. I just want her gone.

03:35I crept away before anyone saw me.

03:37Great, I was unwanted already.

03:39Just my stupid luck.

03:40The next morning, I was pretty much prepared to head back to the orphanage.

03:44But instead, Mrs. Edwards told me she was enrolling me in Ivy's school.

03:48I thought I'd use this chance to bond with her, but she was cold as ice.

03:52Even in school, I noticed that she hardly spoke to anyone and just kept to herself.

03:57Thankfully, the other kids in my class were nicer, especially this one boy, Ben.

04:01We sat next to each other in class and even ended up having lunch together.

04:04I was just telling him how I'd gotten adopted by the Edwards, and he almost spat out his food.

04:09You're living with those whack jobs?

04:11The Edwards owned all the town's major motels, but then guests started vanishing mysteriously.

04:16Their motels closed, and they left town for a couple of years and just recently came back.

04:21Rumor has it that Mrs. Edwards practiced witchcraft and sacrificed those missing guests for some ritual.

04:27That sounds completely ridiculous, and Mrs. Edwards seems like a perfectly nice woman.

04:32Maybe they're just rumors, but it's not hard to see that the Edwards are an odd bunch. Just be careful.

04:38I couldn't deny the facts. They were rather odd.

04:41For starters, I had no idea what Mr. Edwards did, and he never seemed to leave the house.

04:46Mrs. Edwards only went out at night for groceries or errands.

04:50When I asked her why, she made some excuse about hating crowds,

04:54and I figured that she wanted to avoid people since the Edwards weren't exactly well-liked in town.

04:59I wondered why they'd even moved back here.

05:01And there was that one room in the west wing of the motel that always had a huge padlock on it.

05:07One time, Mrs. Edwards caught me looking at it curiously, and she told me it was strictly out of bounds.

05:13It was clear from her face that questions weren't welcome, so I shut my mouth.

05:17One night, as I was studying late in my room, I heard someone talking in low voices outside.

05:22I peeked out a few seconds later to see Mrs. Edwards and Ivy walking down the hallway,

05:26and I couldn't stop myself from following them.

05:29They went up a spiral narrow staircase to the rooftop, and as I watched them from a safe distance,

05:34they held hands and closed their eyes.

05:36Minutes after, Mrs. Edwards took out a huge flashlight from the bag she was carrying,

05:40and they started flashing it in a weird pattern.

05:43A chilly breeze made their nightgowns flail in the wind,

05:46and I couldn't help thinking that they kinda looked like witches.

05:49When they were done, Mrs. Edwards put down the flashlight, and the two hugged tight and cried.

05:54Do you think our message went through, Mom?

05:57I'm sure it did, honey.

05:58I left quietly before they could spot me.

06:00It was obvious they wanted to keep this a secret.

06:02But who could they possibly be sending messages to?

06:04What if they were summoning spirits?

06:06Wasn't it bad enough that we lived next to dead people?

06:09The next day at school, I was walking into the cafeteria with Ben

06:12when I saw some girls surrounding Ivy and throwing their food at her.

06:16I was about to rush to her rescue, but she just ran out of there.

06:19I followed her into the bathroom, and I could hear her crying in one of the cubicles.

06:23Ivy, I saw what happened, and you don't have to put up with this.

06:26Come with me. We'll report it to the principal.

06:29The door suddenly flung open, and she pushed me out of her way, her eyes red.

06:33Why do you care? It's not like you don't think I'm a weirdo, just like everyone else.

06:37I'm sure you've heard all the rumors about our family.

06:40Maybe we are weird, and maybe I am crazy.

06:43And that's why I'm all alone, and always will be.

06:47No, you won't. I'll be there for you.

06:49If you let me, I don't care about any rumors, and I don't believe them.

06:53I like you guys, and who cares if you're a bit weird?

06:56Normal's boring.

06:57Ivy looked surprised, then gave me a weak smile.

07:00We reported the bullies to the principal, and after that day, she started warming up to me.

07:05And she was actually fun to be around.

07:07She was also really smart, and beat me in every round of Scrabble and Chess.

07:12Then one day, Mrs. Edwards took us out to watch her favorite horror movie, and I had a great time.

07:17Oh my god, the way you jumped out of your seat and sent popcorn flying everywhere was hilarious!

07:24I almost peed my pants.

07:26And dropped soda all over me, but who's counting?

07:28Yeah.

07:29Sorry about that, Mrs. Edwards. Just call me Mom.

07:32Mom winked at me, and for the first time in my life, I felt like I had a family.

07:36A strange one, for sure, but I had a place to call home, and I was truly happy.

07:41Soon, I even started inviting Ivy to my plans with Ben.

07:44And while she was always a sport, I could tell Ben was really uncomfortable around her.

07:49Here, I baked my very famous chocolate chip cookies. Why don't you try one?

07:53Oh, sure.

07:55Mmm, this is so nice. I'm gonna go and enjoy this outside while watching the flowers.

08:03Ben picked up his plate and ran off.

08:05I followed him to see him spit out the cookie in his mouth and throw the rest of it in the trash can.

08:10Why did you just do that?

08:11What if they're poisoned or have a curse on them?

08:14Seriously?

08:15I'm sure she wants to turn me into a toad.

08:17She keeps looking at me like she's about to break into a spell.

08:21You sound so absurd right now.

08:23I live with her, Ben, and she's not a witch.

08:26I know she's unusual, but can you just give her a chance?

08:29Ben was reluctant, but he ended up inviting Ivy for his birthday.

08:32The entire class was there, and we were having a great time, till we heard someone screaming.

08:37My diamond necklace! It's gone! Has anyone seen it?

08:40She kept searching the ground frantically before she spotted Ivy.

08:44You! You stole it, didn't you?

08:46What? How would I...

08:47I don't know what trick or spell you used. I just know it's you.

08:50Let her go. She didn't steal anything. I was with her the whole time. Ben, tell her.

08:55But Ben just stood silently like a rock.

08:57Ugh, you're so spineless. We are leaving this party.

09:01Lillian, wait!

09:02No, Ben. I know you don't like Ivy, but this is way too insulting.

09:06I grabbed Ivy's hand and we left.

09:08As soon as we got home, Ivy ran off to her room crying, and I decided to give her some space.

09:13But later that night, I went to check up on her and found her bed empty.

09:17I looked all over and then came to the corridor with the padlocked room, but tonight it wasn't locked.

09:22Feeling really curious, I crept up to it and gently pushed the door open to see a very girly room in great condition,

09:30with Ivy sitting on a bed and a heap of things next to her.

09:34Phone? Jewelry? Watches? Ivy? What's all this?

09:37Ivy looked up at me furiously and started stuffing them all into a bag.

09:41You have no business being here. Get out!

09:44Not till you explain why you have a stash of things that clearly don't belong to you.

09:48A bunch of kids and teachers have been reporting things going missing from their lockers.

09:52You took them?

09:53Shut up and go away!

09:55I just offended you and walked out of a party because someone accused you of theft.

09:59Why would you do something so awful?

10:01You don't really know me or anything about my life, so don't judge me!

10:05And I said, get out!

10:06With that, she jumped on me.

10:08Mr. and Mrs. Edward came running at the noise and pulled her away.

10:11When I told them about the stolen things, they looked appalled.

10:14They told me they'd return all the stuff to school and then took a crying Ivy away to her room.

10:19They gave me no more explanations, just leaving me in the dark as usual.

10:23But I crept up to Ivy's closed door and pressed my ear to it.

10:27I know it was wrong, but I had to do something.

10:30What if Lily reports me to the police?

10:32She won't, honey. Also, I'll talk to the warden and see what we can do.

10:35The warden? Like my orphanage warden? Oh my God, they were going to send me back!

10:40My bad luck had ruined everything again.

10:43I just couldn't go back to the orphanage. I wouldn't!

10:46So I packed my stuff and ran away.

10:48I kept running till I finally saw a bus.

10:50But just as I was climbing in, I slipped on one of the steps and fell backwards.

10:54My head hit the curb and then I slipped into darkness.

10:57When I opened my eyes, I was in the hospital, surrounded by Mr. and Mrs. Edwards and Ivy.

11:02What happened? Why am I here?

11:04Oh, thank God you're awake. You hit your head and fell into a coma, Lily.

11:08It took us days to find you. What were you thinking, running away like that?

11:12I... I heard you and Ivy the night I left, and you said that you were going to talk to the warden.

11:16I didn't want to go back to the orphanage, so I ran away before you could send me.

11:20What? We weren't talking about the orphanage.

11:22Mom was saying she'd talk to the jail warden about arranging a visit.

11:25I guess I should start from the beginning.

11:27And it turned out that Ivy had a sister named Mila who was eight years older and currently in jail.

11:33Mila got mixed up with a terrible crowd in college, and she was eventually arrested in a really big bank robbery.

11:39She was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment in another city, and we moved here to be close to her.

11:44But recently, she was transferred to a jail here, right across from the cemetery.

11:48So we moved back.

11:49And the rumors about the guests disappearing?

11:51Just our competitors' tricks to give us a bad reputation.

11:54And those stolen things?

11:56I stole them because I wanted to save up to get some really good lawyers for Mila who could maybe get her out early.

12:01With business going badly, Mom and Dad didn't have any money.

12:04Also, some time ago, I saw you two on the rooftop flashing some lights.

12:08We were sending Mila a birthday message using Morse code.

12:11She can see the lights from her prison window.

12:13Why didn't any of you tell me all this?

12:15I just hadn't felt ready to share it.

12:17I was getting there, though.

12:18You're the first person I've gotten close to since Mila.

12:21And even though I stole that stuff from school, I swear I didn't steal that girl's diamond necklace at the party.

12:26We should have been honest with you, Lily.

12:28But we get judged a lot already.

12:29And I understand if you don't want to live with us anymore.

12:32We can help you look for a better family.

12:34No, I'm not going anywhere.

12:36I like my weird secretive family.

12:38As long as I'm in on all the secrets, too.
