00:05Rescue High Surf is big waves, heavy rescues, and boy...
00:12Three, two, one.
00:15Welcome to the North Shore.
00:18We have seen some lifeguard shows before,
00:20but nothing like this show.
00:22Audiences are gonna get to experience
00:23what it's really like.
00:25The people and the heart and the culture
00:27of the real, authentic North Shore.
00:29One of the most dangerous pieces of ocean
00:31in the entire world.
00:32We get to see what these men and women go through
00:35to save lives and the family they become.
00:38How are you doing?
00:39Six rescues already.
00:41I know waves are getting bigger.
00:42Did most of them, too, so it's somebody else's turn.
00:45I've been fortunate in my career
00:46to work with really talented ensembles,
00:48starting with AR and West Wing,
00:50and it's exciting to let the audience meet
00:52this extraordinary cast.
00:54Playing loads of people from all over the world
00:56visiting Paradise.
00:57My people put on the line every day to keep themselves
00:59safe.
01:00Sonny is a captain.
01:01He grew up in the water.
01:02That's always been his community.
01:04Cap, you okay?
01:06It's my job to be okay.
01:08I play Em Wright, the first female lieutenant
01:11in ocean safety.
01:12She's incredibly proud to be representing women,
01:16but she also really understands the male energy.
01:20Will is, oh, he's an Aussie,
01:21so I don't have to work on the accent.
01:23He's engaged.
01:24How's it going?
01:25Awesome.
01:25Thank you for asking.
01:27He and Em have been together before,
01:28so there's that struggle working together.
01:30Em, wait, look.
01:32It's fine.
01:33Putting their life on the line,
01:34you need the lightheartedness to balance out.
01:36I thought you said this job was easy.
01:39Some of my favorite stuff is with Kiko.
01:41It's like a big brother, little brother thing.
01:43Laka is proud to be Hawaiian.
01:46He's proud to be a lifeguard.
01:47Morning.
01:48Can I help you?
01:50He is a ladies' man, but when it comes down to work,
01:52he gets serious.
01:54I'm the middle of the biggest ocean on Earth,
01:55and they think it's a freaking swimming pool.
01:58Hina and Kainalu, they're both the rookies here,
02:00so they really have to prove themselves.
02:02Kainalu comes from privilege, whereas Hina
02:04comes from the North Shore.
02:06Are you asking me out?
02:07Depends.
02:08Would you say yes?
02:11They do have one goal in common, to be
02:13the best lifeguard they can be.
02:14Does that guy look OK to you?
02:15No.
02:16Grab the kit.
02:17One of the things we learned when we were doing ER
02:19was to make certain we had the real professionals there
02:21to work with us.
02:22So we had two weeks' water training.
02:24Whether it's a surfboard rescue, a jet ski rescue,
02:26how they manage the patient on the beach,
02:28they're doing things that we actually do.
02:30It's not the easiest show to film.
02:3275% of the time, we're on the water.
02:34It takes a lot of mental and physical strength,
02:37but through that adversity, you get
02:38something really beautiful.
02:39Without us even realizing it, we're
02:41building trust and camaraderie.
02:43Now we're seeing that translate on screen.
02:45You're not the best female lifeguard.
02:47You're the best lifeguard, period.
02:49I'm going in.
02:51This show explores what is happening in Hawaii.
02:54It's not just a one-dimensional rescue show.
02:56There's floods, and sand pits, and crashes on the road.
03:00You're going to laugh.
03:01You're going to cry.
03:02You're going to go, oh my god.
03:03Whoa.
03:04I looked down.
03:05My leg was gone.
03:06Did you take anything before you went out?
03:08Is it us, youngs?
03:09It's probably for the best.
03:10Come on.
03:11Let's go.
03:13It's a dream job, this one, and I'm grateful every day.
