Throwing their weight behind the Women's Rugby World Cup at the Stadium of Light are broadcaster and ex-footballer Karen Carney, Leader of Sunderland City Council Cllr Michael Mordey and the tournament's managing director Sarah Massey.

00:06Because I'm an advocate for women's sports, we're a year to go till the Red Roses are
00:12going to be here in the opening game of the Women's Rugby World Cup, so I'm here to champion
00:17support the women that are going to be playing in that, and all up and down the country throughout
00:21the tournament you're going to be able to see them because the games are going to be
00:24held like I said in various stadiums up and down around England.
00:28And will you be here in Sunderland on the big day?
00:30I hope so, I'm desperately trying to be there so if not I'll be definitely watching it as
00:35well.

00:40Michael Mordy, leader of Sunderland City Council, quite excited about this coming event, what's
00:46in it for Sunderland?
00:48It's an absolutely amazing opportunity for Sunderland to host the opening game of the
00:522025 Women's Rugby World Cup, it puts Sunderland on an international stage, it shows the city
00:58that's transforming, it gives us an opportunity to show off everything that is great about
01:02Sunderland and I'm delighted to welcome the Red Roses to kick off their campaign for the
01:082025 Women's Rugby World Cup here in Sunderland and hopefully we'll set them off on a journey
01:12to winning the cup at the end of the tournament.
01:14So you're hoping for a good advert for our city?
01:17Absolutely, Sunderland's got a reputation as an events city, we've got a long history
01:21of the World Triathlon Series, the Tour of Britain, we've held England men's games here,
01:27this really showcases Sunderland as an events city, I couldn't be prouder to have the opening
01:32game, not just any game, the opening game, when all the eyes of the world will be on
01:36Sunderland, on England, and I'm delighted it's here in Sunderland.

01:49going on here then?
01:51Well, we are here in Sunderland because we are celebrating one year to go to the Women's
01:55Rugby World Cup in 2025, and this is where we are kicking off the tournament as a whole,
02:01so here in Sunderland the Red Roses will play their first match here in 12 months' time.
02:06This is going to be packed to the rafters, it's going to have an amazing electric atmosphere
02:11and we're going to see some incredible competition on this field of play in just 12 months' time.

02:19It's going to be a really hot ticket, tickets go on sale on the 24th of September for this
02:22match.
02:23We've got accessible ticket pricing, we're really attracting the family audience, so
