00:00:00Good morning, looks like they're finally starting work on the place next door, I saw a painter
00:00:14out front just now.
00:00:16You ready for a little competition?
00:00:20It's called the Five Alarm Grill, not exactly refined.
00:00:30Gil, Danny, please tell me again why we thought a bunch of firefighters could open up a restaurant.
00:00:41Because we're used to cooking for large groups of people, we know every firefighter, cop and
00:00:44paramedic in this town and they love to eat.
00:00:48Let's get it done.
00:00:49Came to help.
00:00:50Hey chief, I thought we agreed no restaurant work while you were on duty.
00:00:53I put half my retirement savings into this place, I'm here to supervise my investment.
00:00:58And I'm off duty, so let's clean this place up.
00:01:01What in the world?
00:01:09Music?
00:01:10Oh Sarah, come on, go see your site.
00:01:19First you want to try the beef, and then you taste the wine.
00:01:49See they pair together perfectly.
00:01:54It pairs together, oh my goodness, this is ridiculous, I'm so sorry Beth, can you just,
00:02:00one minute.
00:02:01Oh hey!
00:02:02Hey!
00:02:03I'm sorry, um, aren't you the painter that- No, not the painter, I was painting, we all
00:02:26were.
00:02:27I'm Gil Callahan, former firefighter, part restaurant owner, part clerk.
00:02:31Back of all trades.
00:02:32Ah, Sarah Westbrook, Chef Westbrook.
00:02:35Well okay Chef Westbrook, what can I do for you?
00:02:38Well, you can turn down the music, I can't have my customers subjected to this screeching.
00:02:44Well, it's not that bad, this song was actually top 40 in 1986, so some people must like it.
00:02:49Look, I run a very elegant French restaurant, and this kind of noise does not exactly fit
00:02:54in with the ambiance.
00:02:56Now, I know the power tools are a temporary thing, so that I won't make a federal case
00:03:00over it.
00:03:01You sure you're on such a roll?
00:03:02Listen, clearly we are going to be appealing to vastly different clientele, so I'm just
00:03:07hoping that we can be neighborly, and respectful.
00:03:10So you actually want to be neighborly and respectful?
00:03:13Well absolutely, yes, of course.
00:03:15Well you're doing a bang up job establishing the tone then.
00:03:18Excuse me?
00:03:19Don't you mean pardonnez-moi?
00:03:20I can see where it might be a little confusing, where you might think that pardonnez-moi means
00:03:25pardon me, as in excuse me, but actually pardonnez-moi means forgive me, and no I don't.
00:03:30Turn down the music, please.
00:03:36Nice meeting you, neighbor.
00:03:43How'd it go?
00:03:45He's an overgrown child.
00:03:47Who?
00:03:49The owner, or co-owner, and chef, and cook, or I don't know.
00:03:54He was painting before, and I guess he does it all, including being a sarcastic jerk.
00:03:58If he says that I'm not neighborly, that's hilarious.
00:04:01Wow, seems like someone made an impression.
00:04:04Is he cute?
00:04:07He is, isn't he, Sarah?
00:04:08Oh, Patsy, you've got a one-track mind.
00:04:16Oh no.
00:04:17What?
00:04:18It's nothing, it's a junk mail.
00:04:21Dad, how exactly am I supposed to get this paint out of my hair?
00:04:24Make some turpentine in your baby shampoo.
00:04:26I'm pretty sure I have some in the garage.
00:04:28Bring me some diet root beer while you're out there.
00:04:30That was a smart idea.
00:04:32As Mom would say, spoken like a true man.
00:04:35You're right, that is what Mom would say.
00:04:39You know she's always watching over you, don't you?
00:04:41Yeah, I know she's watching over me.
00:04:46I still really miss her.
00:04:50I do too.
00:05:04We're doing it, Kate.
00:05:06We're finally opening a restaurant.
00:05:08You're gonna love it.
00:05:15Hi, Dad.
00:05:18Hi, my girl.
00:05:22Oh, you come here.
00:05:27You think I'm neighborly, right?
00:05:32Ready with that cream?
00:05:33Yep, both the cream and my arm are almost completely done.
00:05:48Chocolate.
00:05:52That's lovely, that is just lovely.
00:05:54I thought I was the first in my class in the Cordon Bleu for nothing.
00:05:58Voila!
00:05:59There you go.
00:06:00Merci.
00:06:06I'm so excited.
00:06:07I'm so excited.
00:06:08I'm so excited.
00:06:09I'm so excited.
00:06:10I'm so excited.
00:06:11I'm so excited.
00:06:12I'm so excited.
00:06:13I'm so excited.
00:06:14I'm so excited.
00:06:15I'm so excited.
00:06:16I'm so excited.
00:06:33Hey, what are you doing?
00:06:34I just saw something covered in chocolate and whipped cream go by.
00:06:38Can we get some dessert?
00:06:40We're not dressed for that place.
00:06:42Dad.
00:06:43Come on, let's just finish up.
00:06:44I'll buy you an ice cream.
00:06:47Looks like it's going to be a bit colder in the base in Vista Grande,
00:06:51but we could sure use the rain.
00:06:53Thanks, Storm.
00:06:54And that's your Channel 17 weekend weather forecast from Storm Collins.
00:06:58And now, Redmond Roads has the place to dine this weekend in the Central Valley.
00:07:02Thank you, Nora.
00:07:03And yes, indeed, last night I had probably the most amazing meal I've ever had,
00:07:08which is why Redmond Roads restaurant recommendation for this weekend
00:07:12takes us to the city of Merced.
00:07:14And a delightful eating establishment called Little Italy,
00:07:17where the pasta was not only spectacular,
00:07:20but, and this is rare these days, Nora, entirely homemade.
00:07:24That sounds delicious.
00:07:26Little Italy had big flavor, huh, Redmond?
00:07:28Yes, indeed, Nora.
00:07:29But not big prices.
00:07:30I'm Redmond Roads.
00:07:34Anna, can you take these out to the trash?
00:07:37Then we can head out.
00:07:38Okay.
00:07:45Oh!
00:07:47I'm sorry.
00:07:48I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.
00:07:50I apologize.
00:07:51Here's your book.
00:07:52Les Miserables.
00:07:54It's a wonderful book.
00:07:55You speak French?
00:07:56Yes.
00:07:57Oui, je parle.
00:07:58I speak, I lived in France for several years.
00:08:01Is it beautiful?
00:08:02It is, it's just, it's gorgeous.
00:08:05My mom was really into French stuff.
00:08:07Yeah?
00:08:08This was her book.
00:08:10We were reading it together.
00:08:13We even planned a family vacation to Paris.
00:08:15Ah, you were, you were planning.
00:08:17What happened?
00:08:21My mom had cancer.
00:08:24She got better.
00:08:25We were all going to go to Paris together.
00:08:28She never did get better.
00:08:30Anna, I'm sorry.
00:08:32I'm really sorry, honey.
00:08:35It's fine.
00:08:38Yeah, I gotcha.
00:08:40I gotcha.
00:08:42I studied French last year in school.
00:08:44Did you?
00:08:45Well, très bien.
00:08:47Nous devrions parler français.
00:08:49Okay, um, you said something like, that's good?
00:08:54Yes.
00:08:55And that we can talk in French?
00:08:57Exactement.
00:08:58Very good.
00:08:59If you ever want to speak French, just, uh, you know, I'm the chef next door in the restaurant.
00:09:04Come on over and we'll talk any time you want.
00:09:06Thanks.
00:09:07You're welcome.
00:09:08I saw someone order this chocolate thing with whipped cream on it.
00:09:12It looked amazing.
00:09:13Yes.
00:09:14Did you make that?
00:09:15I certainly did.
00:09:17Crêpe au chocolat, chocolate crepes.
00:09:19I'll make them for you any time.
00:09:20Just come on over, all right?
00:09:23You're welcome.
00:09:24I'm Sarah.
00:09:25I'm Hannah.
00:09:26Hannah, nice to meet you.
00:09:27Au revoir, Sarah.
00:09:28Au revoir, Hannah.
00:09:31À tout à l'heure.
00:09:37Au revoir.
00:09:43Hey, tell Taylor I said hi.
00:09:45I will.
00:09:46All right, you two have a good night.
00:09:47See you later.
00:09:50Well, we're finished, kiddo.
00:09:52Tomorrow's opening day.
00:09:53We gotta celebrate.
00:09:54Well, can we go next door and get that chocolate crepe thing?
00:09:56Really?
00:09:57That's what you want to do?
00:09:58Because I was thinking of pizza and a movie.
00:10:00Dad, come on.
00:10:01How much do you think we're going to go out to eat when you're running your own restaurant?
00:10:05This could be our last chance.
00:10:08You're a little dramatic, but you make a point.
00:10:13Think I need a tuxedo for this fancy French place?
00:10:17If you do that in there, I'll tell everyone you kidnapped me.
00:10:24Hi.
00:10:25Welcome to Chez Verun.
00:10:27Have you guys been here before?
00:10:28Oh, no, but Chef Sarah said she made crepes chocolat for me.
00:10:32You know Chef Westbrook?
00:10:34I met her the other day.
00:10:36You did?
00:10:38Well, take a moment to look over the menu, and I will let Chef Westbrook, Sarah, know that you're here.
00:10:44Oh, hey, that's not necessary.
00:10:50Chef Westbrook?
00:10:51Yes?
00:10:52The little girl at table four said she knows you.
00:10:55I thought maybe you'd want to say hello.
00:10:59You know a little girl?
00:11:04Hi, Anna.
00:11:05Hey, Sarah.
00:11:06It's good to see you.
00:11:07You too.
00:11:09Oh.
00:11:10This is your father?
00:11:14Yeah.
00:11:15Oh.
00:11:16Sarah.
00:11:18How nice.
00:11:19Honey, you know what? Chef Westbrook's really busy. Why don't we just order?
00:11:21Okay.
00:11:22What can I tell you about the menu?
00:11:23Well, uh, what is...
00:11:28Cote de veau au fromage.
00:11:29Okay.
00:11:30Um, what is cote de veau au fromage?
00:11:33Ah!
00:11:34Excellent pronunciation.
00:11:35Cote de veau au fromage.
00:11:36It is veal cooked with ham and cheese in a...
00:11:40Veal?
00:11:41Yes.
00:11:42Oh, no, no. I can't eat veal.
00:11:44It's baby cow, and they lock them up.
00:11:46You know what, Hannah?
00:11:47I absolutely felt the same way when I was your age.
00:11:49Honestly, I don't know what you're missing.
00:11:50It's very, very delicious.
00:11:51But, uh, I respect your views.
00:11:54What else looks good?
00:11:55What is, uh, beef carpaccio?
00:11:58Beef carpaccio?
00:11:59It's a raw beef, and it's cooked very lightly in a lemon juice.
00:12:02Honey, why don't you just have the whole roasted chicken?
00:12:03That's simple enough.
00:12:04Actually, no.
00:12:05She'll have the beef bourguignon,
00:12:06which is just basically beef stew with a better publicist.
00:12:09I'll have the duck confit.
00:12:10That's confit, duck confit.
00:12:12An excellent choice.
00:12:14Merci.
00:12:15De rien.
00:12:19She's really nice.
00:12:20Isn't she?
00:12:28One beef bourguignon and a duck confit, please.
00:12:31Your new little friend is with...
00:12:34Her father, who also happens to be the jerk next door.
00:12:37Really?
00:12:38The firefighter?
00:12:40I don't know.
00:12:41He's so handsome.
00:12:42No, he's not.
00:12:43He's a barbarian.
00:12:44He called my beef bourguignon beef stew.
00:12:47Oh, no.
00:12:51I know. Get back to work, Patsy.
00:12:52I got you.
00:12:54What?
00:12:56Jesus!
00:12:57What?
00:12:58Why are you making us do this in the rain,
00:13:00in the fog, in the cold?
00:13:02Because we taste everything we cook,
00:13:03and everything we cook has butter in it.
00:13:05Not that much.
00:13:07Patsy, we buy 35 pounds of butter every week.
00:13:09Yes, and sometimes we have some left over.
00:13:11Yeah?
00:13:12Oh, yeah?
00:13:13How are you running off the butter?
00:13:15I think you're running off the fight with Mr. Handsome Firefighter.
00:13:18Would you stop calling him that?
00:13:19And besides, it's healthy to run off negative feelings.
00:13:21It's not healthy.
00:13:23It's not healthy when you're this old.
00:13:25Okay, then let's slow down.
00:13:27I was saying,
00:13:28it is not healthy to replace your attraction with exercise.
00:13:31You know, just because you get hot and sweaty out here
00:13:34doesn't mean you're still not all hot and bothered about him.
00:13:37Patsy, please!
00:13:39Besides, you know, I cannot believe that he is Hannah's father.
00:13:42Such a sweet, wonderful little girl.
00:13:44How could she have such a cretin for a father?
00:13:47Maybe he's not such a cretin after all.
00:13:51Come on now, speed it up.
00:13:53But hold on, seriously.
00:13:54You look...
00:13:55You're such a weenie.
00:13:56Wait, wait, wait, come on.
00:13:57Come on, it's good for the waist.
00:13:59All right, ready?
00:14:00I'm ready.
00:14:01We're ready.
00:14:02Let's do this, Dad.
00:14:13Now we wait.
00:14:14Wait?
00:14:15We were told there would be no waiting.
00:14:17Yeah, gee, Mrs. Stanton.
00:14:19Come on in.
00:14:20In over two minutes, how could there be a wait?
00:14:22Let's go.
00:14:23Welcome.
00:14:25I don't want to go here.
00:14:26No, Dad, that's not fun.
00:14:28Oh, look.
00:14:29Hey, want to try this new one?
00:14:30Yeah.
00:14:31Yeah?
00:14:32Let's go.
00:14:33Hey, welcome to the Five Alarm Grill.
00:14:34Come on in.
00:14:35Hi.
00:14:36Welcome, everyone.
00:14:39Hi, welcome.
00:14:40Hey, Detective Bates.
00:14:41Detective Ramirez.
00:14:42Why don't you guys sit right there?
00:16:29Thank you, sir.
00:16:31Thank you, sir.
00:16:32Is that our new neighbor?
00:16:33Yep.
00:16:34She needs to loosen up.
00:16:35Yep.
00:16:36And I think we're just the guys to help her do it.
00:16:38what are you doing well you know how we used to initiate rookies into the
00:16:51firehouse yeah well I think our new neighbor deserves an initiation of her
00:16:55own so you're gonna haze snooty McQuenchie no I'm not hazing her I'm
00:16:58just welcoming her creatively to the neighborhood you do realize that we're
00:17:02the new ones here right semantics
00:17:08uh chef Westbrook yes the woman at table six says she wants the gnocchi
00:17:16marinara special I'm sorry what she said it was on our specials board we don't I
00:17:24I want to see
00:17:32barbarian he's messing with it is kind of funny when you think about it okay
00:17:41it's not funny it's uh it's clever okay I mean it's not clever
00:17:47all right well thanks for coming you guys come again bring your kids I can't
00:17:52was incredible forget the pasta I have never had French tempura before so
00:17:57unique
00:18:07hey Hannah hey Sarah hey how are you what are you doing I'm going down to the
00:18:13bookstore dad gave me money to buy some new books oh that's nice of him were you
00:18:19at a yoga class yes yes I was it's a great way to relieve stress from work
00:18:23stress you know you should work with the firemen yeah why because that my guys
00:18:30never seem stressed I mean even at the fire station they're always goofing
00:18:34around and playing dumb games and playing pranks on each other
00:18:37Frank's really yeah they're about as mature as the boys in my class sounds
00:18:42about right hey would you mind if I walked down to the bookstore with you
00:18:44sure yeah all right um so wait a minute you said something about pranks they
00:18:49play a lot of pranks on each other what well one time
00:19:03are we expecting a run on Keisha's no no what are you doing then hard-boiling
00:19:10eggs why well I thought the five alarm girl guys might find them an interesting
00:19:14challenge oh my god you're gonna replace their eggs with hard-boiled ones okay
00:19:20now that's funny just a little thank you for their unexpected input to my menu
00:19:25how can I help excuse me well hello there how may I be of service well I
00:19:37just had the best food here the other day and I wanted to personally thank the
00:19:41chef chefs everyone everyone involved in making the deliciousness that's I
00:19:49enjoyed
00:19:54you know Danny get out here for a second
00:20:04hi hey you're the chef I'm one of them this is Danny I'm Gil good to see you
00:20:09nice to meet you welcome it's good from handshake
00:20:39these are hard-boiled these are all hard-boiled amateur okay well looks like
00:20:53we're having a deviled egg special in honor of the devil next door okay man
00:20:56I'm with you thank you grab me the bacon from the
00:20:59fridge pretend pigs soy vegan pork substitute Gil no one should have to eat
00:21:10this stuff oh nice touch neighbor game on
00:21:18this man says that he's here from the health department something about an
00:21:23anonymous tip that the restaurant was in need of an inspection
00:21:29oh no did someone have a little visitor from the county health department
00:21:53Oh
00:21:59Frenchie oh well she's in over her head put in another CD yeah Bach Mozart
00:22:08Wagner Verdi and Stravinsky Wow seriously
00:22:21suppose you have an opinion on our music yes yes I do actually it's beautiful
00:22:26feel free to turn that up have a good one
00:22:37Patsy hmm why did I open a restaurant in a recession is it bad no it's about the
00:22:47same it's just eventually it's not gonna cut it we're we're just getting by at
00:22:52this point well what can we change well obviously my postcards didn't work
00:22:56nor did the coupons in the newspapers we have to people I've gotta know that
00:23:01we're here you know we're gonna maybe that's not the problem I mean I need the
00:23:05restaurant is lovely really but your prices are higher than a lot of other
00:23:09places nearby I mean the five alarm grill doesn't seem to be suffering
00:23:12because of the economy you know the fun our prices are higher because the
00:23:16quality of our ingredients is higher we have artful presentation no no that is
00:23:21part of the problem too I mean I look because high-end fare is not family
00:23:24friendly I mean last month you refused to serve a family ketchup for their
00:23:28little girl it look perhaps if you serve simpler fare than maybe I'd say I'm a
00:23:32classically trained French chef I'm not going to dumb down my food we've got a
00:23:37beef up our marketing efforts and now we welcome Redmond Rhoades who has the
00:23:44place to eat this week oh my gosh that's it that's perfect what what rustling up
00:23:50some magic at the Fair Oaks cafe the channel 17 news anchor Redmond Rhodes he
00:23:55does a weekly restaurant recommendation and last week they did a show in the
00:23:59seafood place down the street and I walked by on Saturday there was a line
00:24:02at the door this is so what I'm gonna do this is unbelievably perfect wait a
00:24:05minute hold on I'm gonna email them and it's free publicity Patsy it's free
00:24:12all right thank you very much have a good day
00:24:23Hannah I see you everywhere now you shopping for onions yeah my dad sent me
00:24:30over here to get some he'll be back in a minute ah all right well um it was good
00:24:36to see you all right I gotta rush off but I'll see you around Sarah do you
00:24:42know which kinds I should get because my dad said to get two dozen but I didn't
00:24:46know there were so many times uh yeah that's actually a really good question
00:24:49because there's a bunch of different varieties that we use for different
00:24:52things the yellow onions are really good for sauteing good for sauces and soups
00:24:57creams but those are the ones that make you cry a lot the Spanish onion now this
00:25:02one is a little bit sweeter you're gonna want to use this one for onion
00:25:06rings okay we need those I figured as much now red onions are really the only
00:25:11onions that you're gonna want to eat raw I'm going to assume that your dad's
00:25:15gonna be putting these on burgers and sandwiches you're right well listen I
00:25:21really do have to rush off but um you'll come speak French with me sometime yeah
00:25:25all right all right bye
00:25:29you know chef Westbrook helping you pick out some onions huh yeah you know those
00:25:36are actually really good onions you know what these are for these are for
00:25:39juggling dad do you think they're not like each other or something
00:25:50I would say we don't like each other she's a bit okay I'm you know what any
00:25:59questions dad answer the question
00:26:03these are juggling potatoes
00:26:08hey dad I'm gonna hang on next door poor Polly from say that Sarah okay Hannah
00:26:15what's the matter uh well I just bought all this crab at the market and I was
00:26:21gonna make the crab cake so we made the other night oh that's really good yeah
00:26:24those were good these are not Gil you just dropped a bunch of cash on some
00:26:29crab and put a big sign outside that announces we're having crab cake as a
00:26:32special are you telling me we're not serving well I'm not gonna serve crab
00:26:36mush sandwiches not to mention the mush I've got going here doesn't taste right
00:26:39so as far as the customers are concerned we're out of crab at 11 o'clock in the
00:26:43morning
00:27:01hey Hannah you speak some French mademoiselle
00:27:05actually I need a favor
00:27:09yes
00:27:15hmm did your dad change the recipe at all no my dad doesn't use recipes he
00:27:22says cooking is about instinct you just know when it's good oh clearly that's
00:27:27not true um all right what we've got here is crab eggs breadcrumbs probably
00:27:36some mayonnaise some Dijon mustard lemon juice from a bottle unfortunately
00:27:40black pepper on some green onion and way too much dill
00:27:47you're like a food psychic yes I am and my psychic powers tells me that your dad
00:27:52made a little bit more than usually makes today yeah he did yeah yeah see
00:27:56you know some recipes you can't multiply without making changes you know the
00:28:00portions are probably all off thanks Sarah you're welcome my pleasure you
00:28:09know I tell you you're like a natural-born chef you know that you ever
00:28:13want a lesson feel free to come over and we'll speak a little French while we're
00:28:17doing it we go um you know Hannah can I ask you a question why did your dad
00:28:32decide to open up a restaurant
00:28:36um a few months after my mom died dad had this really big scary fire and
00:28:44ceiling being for like a foot in front of him after that I didn't want to be a
00:28:50firefighter anymore
00:28:56he's the cook for the whole fire station so they all decide to open a restaurant
00:29:01together that's a great idea he sounds like a good dad he's the best
00:29:09thank you you're welcome
00:29:13and Hannah tell him to try some fresh lemon zest it's fresh lemon peel maybe
00:29:20some capers too
00:29:22oh wow bye sweetie
00:29:36Sarah Westbrook that was very friendly of you anyway I think that uh Hannah's
00:29:46dad and you have a little in common like what honey loss is a loss
00:30:00put that back outside my crab cakes on the menu after all
00:30:06Oh
00:30:11capers nice touch
00:30:18those are really good you know what Sarah totally saved the day you did good
00:30:25kid
00:30:27it was a good night honey not great I don't know what to do
00:30:37invited local food critics to come and have a meal I've had my friends write
00:30:40glowing reviews to Central Valley eats calm I'm gonna write Redmond Rhodes
00:30:45another email sir I think you're getting a little obsessed you've emailed him
00:30:49you left messages at the station you send that guy one more note he's not
00:30:53gonna be doing a story on shave or Ren he's gonna be reporting on a local
00:30:57restaurant tour who's stalking him though that could work too if you're
00:31:00interested in another angle it's not funny a little funny
00:31:15so Taylor Hannah how is it growing up in a restaurant huh not that different from
00:31:21growing up in a firehouse yeah loud guys and tons of food that is why you're
00:31:26starting dance classes Monday so you can totally girl out then can Hannah
00:31:30sleepover yeah sure why not I guess so if it's our day off tomorrow what am I
00:31:37supposed to do maybe relax or something by yourself for a change all right you

00:32:44Hannah told me that she came by and asked you to play food detective with my
00:32:48disastrous crab cakes yes and these are much improved so I want to thank you and
00:32:54also I thought you might want to try some no you're welcome that was my
00:32:56pleasure it's nothing really it's what I do it's my job food yeah but
00:33:00entertaining the whims of precocious nine-year-old girls is not so thank you
00:33:04for that too she reminds me of myself at that age
00:33:10so I'm sorry Thank You Nora well let me tell you I am still full from last
00:33:17night's dinner which is why the Redmond Roads restaurant recommendation this
00:33:22Friday is in the city of Mr. Grande and is drumroll please the Dharma Diner
00:33:32so what you don't like Indian food because I've been to that place it's got
00:33:36amazing chicken Vindaloo really no no no I love Indian food I'm sure it's
00:33:39wonderful it's just I was stupid you were hoping Redmond Roads restaurant
00:33:48recommendation for this weekend would be shave her in
00:33:51I don't know but who cares with a toupee with a suit thanks right well
00:33:55apparently a lot of people do because his broadcast has been known to have
00:34:00some very positive influence on restaurants I was just hoping for maybe a
00:34:05little bit of a boost my restaurant needs I'm sorry I'm not sure I'm not
00:34:09sure I'm not sure I'm not sure I'm not sure I'm not sure I'm not sure I'm not
00:34:13sure I'm not sure I'm not sure I'm not sure I'm not sure I'm not sure I'm not
00:34:17just hoping for maybe a little bit of a boost my restaurant needs little boost
00:34:25I'm close on Mondays I know you're close to I was wondering if I could take you
00:34:30to lunch this is a thank you which considering everything would mean
00:34:35declaring a truce first good one I know you're kidding I'm not
00:34:48okay
00:35:02Wow you sure do know how to wine and dine a girl never been taken to a food
00:35:06truck before trust me

00:35:27had the best not only the first but the best yes so the strip it's marinated in
00:35:35a coconut bourbon reduction yes yep mmm

00:36:39where are you going I got the keys
00:36:49yes oh like a little daisy daisy it's my cat's name yeah is that your favorite
00:36:59flower oh my mom's my mom's favorite flowers are daisies oh it's a nice
00:37:04tribute where did the name shave a wren come from well Francois Pierre de la
00:37:09Varenne was one of the founding fathers of French cuisine back in the time of
00:37:13Louis the 14th yeah when you think of the mastery that is French cooking you
00:37:19know the precision of the technique you think Varenne voila shave a wren
00:37:25really what I'm just wondering why you would pick such a sentimental name for
00:37:30your cat but not your restaurant cat is a living breathing thing that you care
00:37:33for you yeah but so is a restaurant in order for it to thrive it needs love
00:37:39attention needs community and how's that any different from a pet
00:37:48but it could be wrong no I think it's a very good point
00:37:55what I just wanted to let you know that um Hannah told me about your wife and I
00:38:04wanted to say how very sorry I was but that obviously you are doing an amazing
00:38:11job with Hannah thank you she's a big fan of yours by the way
00:38:19hi baby it's because we have something in common oh I lost both of my parents

00:40:26like you need to go to confession to deal with Sarah where's the salmon
00:40:33what I didn't go to the market yesterday we're out of salmon you forgot oh that's
00:40:42a first I did not forget Patsy I was out all day and I we have ham I will make a nice
00:40:49ham and roasted vegetable tureen you know that sounds delicious
00:40:57yeah yeah seriously it's growing on me get a guy a break okay his judgment is
00:41:10clouded at the moment
00:41:29all right that's it oh what's wrong with you and what you tell me you've been all
00:41:35over the place all day there's something up what is it there's nothing wrong with

00:43:18well was it a nice date yeah it was nice it was very nice but that's not the

00:54:09thank you oh there's so good I can really get used to this kiddo is it like
00:54:20really good or is it just good for a kid what's kid good you know it's good for a
00:54:24kid but not an adult or you say it is but it's not that good cuz you don't
00:54:27hurt my feelings well personally I think that it's grown up delicious but what do
00:54:30I know I'm just your dumb old dad why don't we ask an expert Sarah mademoiselle
00:54:34Callahan Sydney a delicious you know that's not fair I don't know what she
00:54:38said she said miss Callahan dinner is delicious
00:54:45tribune the most important lesson for a chef to learn is to eat our own food
00:54:52before it gets cold what is this this is some sort of cream
00:55:00Béchamel
00:55:10okay I'm gonna go do the dishes absolutely not you cooked I clean those
00:55:13are the rules no you don't make me do all the dishes when you cook well I can
00:55:16certainly help do the dishes let's all do you're gonna teach me how to make
00:55:19bread tomorrow I am yes okay I'm gonna do the dishes no arguments by all means
00:55:26merci mademoiselle
00:55:31she really is a lovely young lady thank you I worry that she's growing up too
00:55:37fast she feels she has to take care of me now
00:55:41that her mom's gone thank you for coming by the way meant a lot to her and thanks
00:55:48for this this was delicious and it's a work of art it's almost architectural
00:55:53that would be French cuisine for you that's French cooking very specific
00:55:59very technical yes probably exactly the reason I was attracted to it so when I
00:56:04was a kid my parents and I used to go to this little place called Francois's
00:56:09town that I grew up we used to go every Sunday for breakfast and when my
00:56:13parents passed my grandparents had to sell their house and so no more I would
00:56:20just go back every once in a while to just feel close to them there and one
00:56:27day I found myself being hired as a waitress there which was really nice and
00:56:33a few months after that a line cook got sick and they asked me to help out which
00:56:37was even better and for the first time since my parents died I felt like I was
00:56:48home again in that kitchen you're an excellent cook thank you I mean I threw
00:56:59Italian Japanese Greek food at you you thought you were training all those
00:57:04cuisines to have you ever thought of um I don't know straying from such a
00:57:08traditional French dishes well French food is definitely that it's very precise
00:57:13very exacting very detailed but at least I know that there's a right way and a
00:57:18wrong way to do things and I find it very comforting because because the rest
00:57:22of the universe does not exactly follow those rules all the time doesn't when
00:57:27Kate died it was just so ridiculous I'm a firefighter I go to work every day I
00:57:30know I'm putting my life on the line but the whole idea that she was at home and
00:57:36she was in danger
00:57:55you sure you don't need help

01:07:02what happened I almost destroyed the place almost burned it down but your
01:07:08cute neighbor came by and took charge Sarah that cute neighbor Sarah that'd be
01:07:15the one
01:07:17it's turned to
01:07:25you may have to ask him out this time
01:07:48Oh
01:08:05little breeze that blows
01:08:17Oh
01:08:48oh hi hi uh looks like I owe you another thank you and that last night was the
01:08:57second time you swooped in and saved the five alarm grill it's no problem really
01:09:01I was just happy to help and actually I was really hoping we could maybe finish
01:09:07the conversation that we had started earlier I'd like that
01:09:18the restaurant thing is on the news oh my god you scared me I thought that
01:09:26something was on fire or something you've gotten me so worked up that it could be
01:09:30us one night that I got a little overexcited and now Redmond Roads has the
01:09:35place to eat this weekend thank you Nora well this week's recommendation brought
01:09:40us to Vista Grande but here's the thing Nora there's a little twist in this
01:09:44tale you see there's a delightful charming little French restaurant there
01:09:48called Chez Varenne the owner and chef has been courting you for some time now to
01:09:53come down there and try a meal well the other evening while we had every
01:09:57intention of eating at Chez Varenne I couldn't help but notice a new addition
01:10:01to the neighborhood just next door in fact it was a high-energy home cooking
01:10:05establishment called the five alarm grill it's run entirely by firefighters
01:10:10firefighters from local station four who serve up traditional and delicious
01:10:14rib-sticking dinners here's the thing Nora us civilians don't have to slide
01:10:17down a pole to get them or go into a burning building I hope no way no way
01:10:22and that's why the Redmond Roads restaurant recommendation this Friday is
01:10:26the five alarm grill don't forget to try the macaroni cheese and delicious beef
01:10:31stew sounds like they're putting hunger fires out huh Redmond sir I can't
01:10:35Sarah I can't believe this I am so sorry
01:10:39Sarah?
01:10:48I'm done
01:10:51You're done with what?
01:10:52All of it
01:10:54No Sarah you don't mean that
01:10:55I do
01:10:59I do
01:11:01I wanted to be a chef all my life and
01:11:05it's a goal that I've strived for and I did a good job
01:11:12I'm classically trained I've traveled the world I've built this restaurant to
01:11:19something that I could be proud of and I was so sure that one day was gonna be a
01:11:25success and then you shut up you put a restaurant on a on a on a whim did you
01:11:32know that nine out of ten new restaurants fail but no no no you're an
01:11:36overnight success while I struggle on a daily basis it's almost the perfect
01:11:43ending me cooking at your restaurant on the night of your rave review it's like
01:11:50driving the final nail into the coffin of my restaurant
01:11:53Come on don't say that
01:11:54Why not?
01:11:55Because your restaurant is gonna be an even bigger success tomorrow and mine is
01:12:00just gonna be the joke of the city I'm gonna go close the doors right now
01:12:06Sarah
01:12:13Gil I'm sorry she's uh she's a passionate woman sometimes a little too
01:12:18passionate it's just that uh this this restaurant it's all she's had it's all
01:12:24she's wanted actually and until she met you
01:12:29Oh Sarah whatever you're gonna say Patsy please do not interject the phrase
01:12:34handsome firefighter this would you prefer cry baby woe is me
01:12:43I'm sorry I'm so sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm
01:12:49sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm
01:12:56cry baby woe is me melodramatic chef who overreacts and throws an incredible man
01:13:01under the bus doesn't have the same ring to it does it
01:13:06you have to know this wasn't Gil's fault I know there's more to life than cooking
01:13:11Sarah you can't keep pushing people away because sometimes they won't come back
01:13:25Does anyone know where Gil went?
01:13:27Uh I don't know I'll give him a call
01:13:37He's not answering he's going straight to voicemail
01:13:39Hi I need to get to the news studio it's important
01:13:55Right buddy sure
01:13:56What's going on here?
01:14:01So on a scale from one to ten how badly do you think I messed things up with Gil?
01:14:05Why does it only have to go up to ten?
01:14:10Hey
01:14:12Hi um do you maybe know where my dad went?
01:14:16Okay in three two
01:14:19Thanks coach Cassidy for that KXB sports report and now it seems we have a visitor
01:14:25Yeah he
01:14:26That's right Nora we do indeed have a visitor with us
01:14:30He's on television
01:14:31Now viewers if you were watching the Redmond Roads restaurant review earlier in the broadcast
01:14:36you would have heard me mention the Five Alarm Grill
01:14:39Well Gil Callahan the owner and chef at the Five Alarm Grill is here in the studio with us this evening
01:14:45and he has something rather interesting to say good evening Gil
01:14:49Good evening thank you Redmond hi Nora
01:14:52Um well here's the irony you came to our little street to try Sarah Westbrook's cooking
01:15:00but that's exactly what you did you just did it at the Five Alarm my restaurant
01:15:04You see um my daughter had been hurt and I had to step out and Sarah came in at the last minute
01:15:10so that we didn't have to close down for the night
01:15:13So let me get this straight Gil
01:15:15Jeff Westbrook left her restaurant to run the Five Alarm Grill in your time of crisis
01:15:20That's right she did
01:15:21So she cooked the delicious beef stew I tasted
01:15:24She did Redmond and if you do review the Chez Veran you will try her beef bourguignon
01:15:28and that's a fancier even better version of that stew
01:15:31It's one of the many amazing things that Sarah has on her menu
01:15:35So what do you say Redmond dinner at Chez Veran next week?
01:15:39Well how could I refuse?
01:15:41But I must tell you Gil I've reviewed a lot of restaurants in my time
01:15:44and I don't think I've ever come across anything quite like this before
01:15:47Well she's well she's my neighbor
01:15:51I'm just being neighborly
01:16:01Well what that has been a very surprising KXP channel 17 news report
01:16:06I'm Redmond Bright
01:16:07And I'm Nora Smithson and from all of us here tonight have a good night
01:16:12Good night
01:16:16That's a wrap people
01:16:17And we're clear
01:16:18And we're clear
01:16:19Absolutely
01:16:32Sarah
01:16:34Hi
01:16:35Hi
01:16:36Where is everybody?
01:16:38Oh they went home
01:16:39Danny and Elise took Hannah home with them
01:16:43Oh
01:16:45Okay
01:16:47Hey
01:16:49I'm really sorry
01:16:50Don't you dare apologize
01:16:52I'm the one that should apologize
01:16:56You're a good man Gil Callaghan
01:16:58Wow
01:16:59Thank you
01:17:01You're welcome
01:17:03And that thing that you said on TV about us being neighborly
01:17:10I'm sorry I don't I don't I can't do that
01:17:16It just wouldn't be enough
01:17:21Because I think I'm falling in love with you
01:17:25And
01:17:27And
01:17:29You're clearly in love with me
01:17:33Or else you wouldn't have gone on TV and made such an incredible fool of yourself
01:17:42You're not gonna make this easy on me are you?
01:17:46No
01:17:51Alright
01:17:56Thank you
01:18:21Good evening
01:18:22This is Redmond Road
01:18:23We are outside the FIVE Alarm Grill
01:18:25Or maybe the FIVE Alarm Grill
01:18:27Who knows how you're supposed to pronounce this
01:18:29Very eclectic restaurant which as you know
01:18:31Is a rather eclectic mix between
01:18:33Chez Varenne and the FIVE Alarm Grill
01:18:35Tonight of course is the first night
01:18:37Opening night of this wonderful new restaurant
01:18:39Some of the patrons are already inside
01:18:41Enjoying a wonderful meal
01:18:42I hope soon to join them
01:18:43So once again this is Redmond Road's restaurant review
