00:00Just over 5 laps to go in the 3000m steeplechase and massive Belgium setting a tremendous pace.
00:07It's about 8.10 or 8.11. He's an 8.45 man though so he surely can't keep it going long.
00:13Second place Mominski, third is Renner New Zealand, in fourth place Mahmood, and in fifth place Graham Fallow of Great Britain.
00:19Colin Reitz, the British record holder, third in the World Championship last year, and Roger Hackney have both not followed the pace in fact.
00:27They've hung back, they believe it to be too fast. Renner going up on the outside as Maas drops out.
00:33And I think we could expect that. First lap without the water jump, 63 seconds, 2.8 after 800 approximately.
00:45So it's very, very quick. Just look at the schedule at the moment, they keep on at this pace, they'll run something in the region of 8 minutes 10 seconds,
00:53which would be the fastest time in the world this year.
00:58Peter Renner who came into the race at the last moment, 11th in the Olympic final in Los Angeles.
01:04Mominski of course missed that final, one of the finest steeplechases in the world.
01:09First in the friendship games in Moscow. Mahmood, the Frenchman who was in third place, he got the silver in California.
01:16And those three getting away now are from Graham Fallow and Raman of Spain.
01:22As you were saying, Renner, the leader, 11th in Los Angeles, he's about 10 seconds up on his best time done in Los Angeles.
01:28So there's a feeling that he'll drop back soon and Mominski may have to cut it out.
01:32And that'll be surprising because he's not generally recognized as a frontrunner because he's got good sprint finish.
01:38But it is the tall New Zealander that's leading at the moment and keeping this very fast pace going.
01:44Mominski in second place, brilliant finisher.
01:52Both really attacked the water jump.
01:55They're a long way in front of Renner now, he's in third place.
01:58With Diemer now, the American who got the bronze medal in Los Angeles, in fourth place.
02:14Nearly 60,000 people roaring these two off.
02:18And it's very, very fast.
02:22Mominski, just biding his time.
02:25Mahmoud trying to gather strength.
02:31And Mominski lost a meter there, better hurdling by Mahmoud.
02:34But he's making it up on the flat.
02:38What a race this is.
02:40They've slowed down a little bit, just measuring each other.
02:43Trying to save some of the sprint. Mahmoud is gaining a meter at each barrier.
02:47But they're both good waterjumpers.
02:49And Mominski takes him now on the outside.
02:53Brilliant waterjump. And Mahmoud got it better.
02:56A brilliant waterjump by Mahmoud.
02:58And he comes back on the inside.
03:01Can he take the pole? One barrier left.
03:05And he's gained more ground.
03:06A marvellous win for Mahmoud, the Frenchman.
03:10The French champion beats Mominski.
03:13And the time, 8.7.62.
03:17A European record.
03:20Graham Fell probably just out-spread Stieber, the bronze medalist, for third place.
03:278.17 for Fell, approximately.
03:29Well, that is a marvellous run.
03:31That is the second fastest run in history.
