00:00Bouquets piled high throughout Sunday as residents of Selingen paid their respects to the victims
00:05of Friday night's stabbing attack at a town celebration, an attack already factoring into
00:10the country's debate on immigration.
00:13I just heard that the far right youth party is talking about coming together today here,
00:23so of course we are very afraid that the right wing is getting more and more power and that's
00:30definitely not the way, of course we have to ask some hard questions but racism is never
00:36the answer.
00:37Indeed, the far right alternative for Germany's youth wing lit candles and lay flowers in
00:43front of a banner that read Our People First.
00:45Furthermore, a prominent figure in the centre-right CDU opposition party has called for the country
00:51to stop taking in refugees from Syria and Afghanistan in response to the attack.
00:57This after the 26-year-old suspect, who turned himself in to police over the stabbing, was
01:01revealed to be from Syria and to have filed an asylum claim in 2022.
01:06We're investigating, among other things, murder and attempted murder and, which also explains
01:12the jurisdiction of the Federal Public Prosecutor General, membership of a foreign terrorist
01:17organisation, namely the so-called Islamic State group.
01:23Prosecutors say the suspect, Issa al-H, shared the ideology of the radical Islamist terror
01:28organisation and was acting on those beliefs when he stabbed his victims repeatedly.
01:34Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the attack, which they say targeted Christians
01:39too, in their words, avenge Muslims in Palestine and everywhere, although they have provided
01:45no evidence of their involvement.
01:47A 15-year-old was also arrested on Saturday, suspected of having knowledge of the planned attack.
