00:00Tentative calm is restored, with Israel and Lebanese militia Hezbollah signalling an end
00:08to the most intense trade of fire seen between the two groups in months.
00:14On Sunday, Israeli forces sent over 100 fighter jets to Lebanon, striking what they say were
00:20rockets and weapons Hezbollah was planning to attack Israel with.
00:25The militant group then launched hundreds of rockets and drones towards Israel, an offensive
00:30Hezbollah says is in response to the killing of its top commander, Fuad Shukar, in July.
00:39Three people in Lebanon and one Israeli naval officer were killed in the exchange.
00:44Israel's saying they've had no significant damage, but warning they'll respond to any
00:49more attacks.
00:50We're striking Hezbollah with explosive weapons.
00:55Three weeks ago we destroyed its commander, today we stopped his attack plan, and I repeat,
01:02this is not the end of the story.
01:09The exchange of fire marks a major escalation in the conflict between Iran-backed Hezbollah
01:14and US-backed Israel, who've been trading daily fire since Israel began its assault
01:19in Gaza.
01:21Hezbollah, which supports Palestinian militant group Hamas, says they're trying to pressure
01:26Israel to end its aggression in Gaza.
01:30Hezbollah's leader says their attack was successful, but warns there could be further strikes.
01:35The result was satisfactory and achieves the intended goal, so we consider that the operation
01:44It comes amid ceasefire talks in Egypt, and Hezbollah says they aim to show that Hamas
02:06allies will continue fighting for an end to the war in Gaza.
02:10It fears the latest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah could escalate into a wider
02:15regional war.
02:16The US has been increasing its military presence in the region.
02:20We are feverishly working in Cairo as we speak with our team and the teams of the other mediators
02:26as well as with the Israelis to get to a ceasefire and hostage deal along the framework that
02:32President Biden laid out, to get calm along that border between Israel and Lebanon, and
02:39ultimately to get to a broader circumstance of regional stability.
02:44Those talks ended on Sunday without a final agreement, but lower-level negotiations will
02:49continue in the coming days as stakeholders attempt to end the war in Gaza and stand any
02:54more escalation in the region.
