London's Notting Hill Carnival started in the 1960's against a backdrop of race riots – and in 2024, there are similar tensions fanned by the far right.

But in between, the carnival has grown to become one of the largest Caribbean festivals in the world. Up to two million people are expected to take part.

00:00Well it's the August bank holiday and in this part of West London,
00:03that only means one thing, Notting Hill Carnival time.
00:06Now the Notting Hill Carnival has been going since the early 1960s
00:10and it was set up to celebrate, to bring together the local Caribbean community
00:15in response to the huge race riots that have been happening in this area
00:19back in 1959 and that of course has heaved echoes
00:22for the present day over 60 years later with those race riots happening
00:26across the UK in the early part of August. I've printed to many people that
00:30the Notting Hill Carnival's message of social inclusion, of diversity, of
00:34positive multiculturalism is as important now as it was
00:38back then. Now up to 7,000 police officers are on duty
00:42to make sure that there isn't any trouble but today is Sunday and it's
00:45traditionally family day so it's a very relaxed,
00:48very friendly atmosphere and for the vast majority of the people coming down
00:51here today this will all be about enjoying
00:54the colourful clothes, the costumes, the floats,
00:57the food and of course the incredible music.
