00:00When you go to sleep at night, resting well after another exciting day, there is this
00:05bright, amazing thing in the sky.
00:09It looks a lot bigger to us than the stars and is almost like Earth's nightlight.
00:15We are going to learn about that incredible thing that we see at night called the moon.
00:20We call it the moon because it is our moon.
00:24Earth only has one moon, which is different than many other planets in our solar system
00:29alone.
00:30There are over 200 moons, isn't that incredible?
00:34In our solar system alone, there are over 200 moons.
00:39But out of all these moons, our moon is the most special to us.
00:45And we hope you'll see just how awesome it truly is as we learn about our little friend
00:51in the solar system, the moon.
00:55It's interesting.
00:56Our moon really is our little friend in the solar system.
00:59The moon is always there for us and we are always there for the moon.
01:05Love you, buddy.
01:07You see, the moon orbits Earth, meaning it goes around and around our planet.
01:12It's almost like the moon is playing a game with the Earth.
01:15It's almost like a carousel going around and around and around.
01:20The moon continually orbits Earth.
01:25Planets that orbit our planet, that go around and around and around the Earth, are called
01:31satellites.
01:32Satellites.
01:34Anything that orbits our planet is a satellite.
01:38The moon is a natural satellite.
01:40It's an object we did not create that orbits our planet.
01:44The moon is a natural satellite.
01:47Isn't that cool?
01:48Here is an example of an artificial satellite.
01:51It is something people made that orbits Earth.
01:55They cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make and can do all kinds of awesome things
02:01in space.
02:03But this video isn't about artificial satellites, right?
02:07It's about Earth's largest natural satellite.
02:11The moon!
02:13The moon is the Earth's largest natural satellite.
02:18Here is another interesting fact about the moon.
02:21The moon is made of rock and metal, just like the Earth is.
02:26That's right.
02:27The moon is made of rock and metal.
02:31You may have heard someone say that the moon is made up of something else.
02:36Something more silly.
02:38For hundreds of years, people have joked that the moon is made of cheese.
02:43But that's just a funny, silly thing people have joked about.
02:48And even if it was made of cheese, what if it went bad?
02:51Eek!
02:52The smell!
02:54How would you feel if the moon was made of cheese?
02:57Okay.
02:59So, the moon isn't made of cheese.
03:04The moon is made of rock and metal, just like the Earth is.
03:09Hey, would you like to find out just how fast the moon is moving right now?
03:15Because the moon is always orbiting Earth.
03:19But how fast?
03:21Check this out.
03:22The moon goes over one mile every two seconds.
03:27That's over half a mile a second.
03:30That's crazy fast.
03:31The moon, this massive natural satellite made of rock and metal, is going over a mile every
03:39two seconds.
03:40Let's count.
03:41One, two, another mile.
03:44Hey, another one.
03:48The moon is moving so fast, it only takes about 27 days for the moon to completely orbit
03:54Earth.
03:55Woo!
03:56Don't get in the moon's way, right?
03:59We've learned so much already.
04:01Let's review what we've learned about the moon.
04:03Okay, that's definitely a fake shooting star.
04:07Did we really need to add that?
04:10It did look cool, though.
04:12There are over 200 moons in our solar system.
04:17Earth only has one moon.
04:18We call it the moon, which makes sense.
04:22The moon is a natural satellite.
04:25Satellites are things that orbit Earth.
04:29It orbits pretty quickly.
04:30The moon goes one mile every two seconds.
04:34Okay, stop the music.
04:37Stop the music.
04:38We're all going to go to sleep with this music on.
04:41We need something more upbeat.
04:42We're talking about how fast the moon is.
04:45It's cool.
04:46It's exciting.
04:47Okay?
04:48Yes, this is more like it.
04:53Let's talk about how fast the moon is again, but with this fancy music.
04:58The moon goes one mile every two seconds.
05:04The moon is so fast.
05:06It only takes about 27 days for the moon to completely orbit Earth.
05:12Wow.
05:13And, we learned, like the Earth, the moon is made of rock and metal.
05:22That'll work.
05:23Wow, what a review.
05:24What a review.
05:26Alright, now it's time to solve a mystery.
05:30Are you ready?
05:32Okay.
05:33So, let's look at this footage.
05:36What color is the moon?
05:37Yeah, it's like this yellowish color.
05:41Now look at this footage.
05:43It's white, but then it kind of turns gray and then white again and gray.
05:47It's like this whitish gray.
05:49Same moon, right?
05:51Same moon, different colors though.
05:53Well, one thing's for sure.
05:55The moon itself doesn't change color.
05:57The moon is always gray.
05:59When Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon, it was gray.
06:04It is still gray.
06:06The moon itself doesn't change color.
06:10So why does the moon appear in different colors to us here on Earth?
06:15The biggest reason is because of our atmosphere, which is made up of all of the gases that
06:20surround our planet.
06:22When we look into space, we are looking through all of the surrounding gases, which can change
06:27what things look like.
06:29That's why the moon can look like it is changing colors to us.
06:34Okay, now we come to a very important fact about the moon.
06:39The moon doesn't make its own light.
06:40It reflects the light of the sun.
06:43Let's say that again.
06:44The moon doesn't make its own light.
06:47It reflects the light of the sun.
06:51This makes sense because remember, the moon is made of rock and metal, which aren't able
06:57to produce their own light.
07:01No one picks up a rock and says, I'm going to use this as a flashlight because the rock
07:07doesn't make light.
07:09But that same rock, if the light shining on it is bright enough, will reflect light.
07:15That's what the moon does.
07:19The moon reflects the light from the sun.
07:25Now this is cool.
07:26Have you ever wondered why sometimes the moon is a full circle and sometimes it's almost
07:31like it isn't even there.
07:32It's like the amount of light the moon is reflecting changes.
07:38Well, we would like to show you the eight phases of the moon.
07:43These phases are the reason the moon can look different throughout the month.
07:47Eight phases.
07:49How can we remember that the moon has eight phases?
07:57The moon has eight phases.
08:01Okay.
08:03It takes a month for the moon to go through all eight phases and then it starts all over
08:08again.
08:09So in a month's time, you can see all eight phases of the moon.
08:15If you would like to learn more about the eight phases of the moon, we are in the process
08:20of making that video.
08:21It should come out shortly.
08:23How cool is that?
08:24There are a lot of amazing things to learn about the phases of the moon.
08:28That's why we are going to dedicate a whole video to the topic.
08:33Wow.
08:34The moon is a natural satellite made of rock and metal that completely orbits Earth every
08:4027 days.
08:42It doesn't make light but reflects the light of the sun.
08:47How much light the moon reflects can change depending on what phase it is in.
08:53There are eight phases of the moon.
08:55It takes the moon a month to go through all eight phases.
09:01And if you ever look into the sky and see a red moon or a yellow moon, remember our
09:06atmosphere can change the appearance of the moon.
09:10But the moon itself never changes color.
09:13It is always gray.
09:16Well, that's our little friend in the solar system, the moon.
09:21There are over 200 moons in our solar system, but the moon is ours.
09:27We'll see you tonight, buddy.
