00:00In this lesson, let's talk about travel and adventure.
00:03Hello, my name is Matty from POC English and in this lesson, we are going to learn some
00:11phrases, collocations and idioms about traveling and adventure.
00:16Now for this lesson, I decided to do something slightly different.
00:20And so I'll be presenting the lesson on this big screen for you as a slideshow.
00:25Let's see if you guys like it.
00:26The first idiom we want to learn together is get itchy feet.
00:31Now what are feet?
00:33Feet are these.
00:34When you get itchy feet, what does that mean?
00:39Well, get itchy feet means to have a strong desire to travel, to go somewhere.
00:45Get itchy feet.
00:47Now how do we use it in a sentence?
00:49Let's see an example.
00:51Every summer he gets itchy feet and starts planning his next trip.
00:57Do you get itchy feet?
01:00Let's go to the next one.
01:02Now you want to go on a journey, a very good phrasal verb to say start a journey is set
01:09out.
01:10If you set out on a journey, that means you start or begin a trip or a journey.
01:17For example, early in the morning they set out on a journey to explore the mountains.
01:24They set out on a journey.
01:27They started their journey.
01:30Now let me teach you some adjectives which are related to traveling and going on a journey.
01:35The first one is a pleasant journey.
01:39Now as the name suggests, pleasant journey is a journey that you enjoy, a journey that's
01:46free from trouble.
01:48For example, I hope you have a pleasant journey this summer.
01:53I hope you have a pleasant journey this summer.
01:58But what if your journey is not pleasant?
02:00You can use a very interesting adjective.
02:03Let me show you, arduous.
02:07Arduous journey is a journey that is difficult and requires a lot of effort.
02:12It's not easy.
02:14It's arduous.
02:16For example, the explorers faced an arduous journey through the mountains.
02:23The explorers faced an arduous journey, a very difficult journey, a very demanding journey
02:31through the mountains.
02:32Hmm, do you like an arduous journey?
02:35I prefer a pleasant journey.
02:38You see how you can use these in sentences?
02:40Let's move on to the next collocation.
02:43What if you're on a journey and the journey is so long and you're tired?
02:46Well, at that point, you may want to break the journey.
02:51Break the journey.
02:52What does it mean?
02:53Well, to break the journey means to stop or to pause during a long trip, often to rest.
03:01You're driving and you've been driving for five hours nonstop.
03:05You're so tired and you decide to break the journey.
03:12For example, we decided to break the journey with a stop in a small town to rest before
03:20continuing, decided to break the journey.
03:25A phrase similar to break a journey is to have a stopover, to have a stopover.
03:33What does it mean?
03:34It means to make a short stay at the place during a long journey, usually overnight.
03:41If you're on a long journey, it takes you two days to get to your destination and you
03:45say, hey, tonight, let's have a stopover.
03:49Look at this.
03:51You find a motel and you say, let's have a stopover.
03:53For example, on our way to Sydney, we had a stopover in a motel to rest.
04:00You can't drive for two days in a row, right?
04:03You need to have a stopover.
04:05Or another similar one.
04:07If you're driving on the road, you need to refuel your car and you need to rest and you
04:12need to eat something, so you may want to make a pit stop.
04:17To make a pit stop, oh, look at that.
04:20Here's a gas station and there is a restaurant.
04:23Let's stop, refuel, get something to eat.
04:26Let's make a pit stop.
04:28Let's take a short break during our journey to rest, to eat or to refuel.
04:33For example, we made a pit stop at a roadside diner to grab some food.
04:39We were tired and we said, hey, we also need to refuel the car, so might as well make a
04:46pit stop.
04:47All right.
04:48Now, what are some things that people usually do on a trip?
04:53Let's talk about those, right?
04:55The first one is try the local cuisine.
05:00The local cuisine is basically the local food.
05:04So you travel somewhere and you say, hmm, let's explore some of the local restaurants.
05:09Let's see what these people eat.
05:12Let's try some local meals.
05:15Let's enjoy the local food.
05:17That is, try the local cuisine.
05:20For example, when we visited Italy, we made sure to try the local cuisine, including authentic
05:28pizza and pasta.
05:30If you go to Italy, make sure you try the local cuisine.
05:35It's just another thing you can do is to take a guided tour, especially if you're going
05:41to historical places.
05:43To take a guided tour means to join the tour led by an experienced tour guide.
05:49And the tour guide has a lot of knowledge about that historical site or the place you're
05:55visiting.
05:56That means the tour guide can guide you on your tour.
06:00For example, we decided to take a guided tour of the ancient ruins to learn more about their
06:07history.
06:09We decided to take a guided tour because we wanted to understand the history behind the
06:15ancient ruins.
06:16And so we took a guided tour.
06:20What's another thing people usually do when they're on a trip?
06:25How about going sightseeing?
06:27If you're a tourist, this is a must.
06:31As a tourist, you might want to go sightseeing when you visit a new town.
06:35To go sightseeing means to visit and explore famous or interesting places in an area.
06:42You travel to London and you must go sightseeing.
06:46For example, on our first day in London, we went sightseeing and visited Big Ben.
06:54If you're a nature lover, another thing you can do while traveling is to go off the beaten
06:59track.
07:00Go off the beaten track.
07:02What does it mean?
07:03Hmm.
07:04Look at the picture.
07:05Is she someplace crowded?
07:07No.
07:08Not many people are there.
07:09To go off the beaten track means to explore places that are not well known.
07:15To explore places that are away from the usual tourist spots.
07:19Not many tourists know about these places and you decide to go and explore them.
07:24That is, going off the beaten track.
07:26For example, we decided to go off the beaten track and found a peaceful hidden lake.
07:34Do you like going off the beaten track?
07:36Well, personally, if I have an off-road car, I would definitely do it.
07:41But without a car, it's difficult or maybe impossible, right?
07:45Now, let's talk about different types of travelers.
07:49Ready?
07:50Let's go.
07:52The first type of traveler is intrepid.
07:55Intrepid.
07:56Intrepid travelers are travelers who are very brave and adventurous.
08:01You're not afraid of trying new things.
08:04They are intrepid, bold, brave.
08:08For example, the intrepid traveler explored areas of the Amazon rainforest.
08:15The intrepid traveler explored areas of the Amazon rainforest because he was not afraid
08:22and he wanted to do something adventurous.
08:26Next type of traveler is seasoned traveler.
08:29Seasoned?
08:30As in pepper and salt.
08:32No, no, no.
08:34Seasoned traveler is a traveler who's experienced.
08:38A traveler who knows what to do when he or she is on a trip.
08:44For example, as a seasoned traveler, she knew how to find the best local restaurants.
08:52Because she had experience, she knew how to find the perfect places to eat.
08:58She was a seasoned traveler.
09:00What is another type of traveler?
09:03Adventurous.
09:04Adventurous travelers are travelers who love adventure.
09:08For example, the adventurous traveler decided to try skydiving during his trip to Japan.
09:17The adventurous traveler decided to try skydiving.
09:21Are you brave enough to try that?
09:22Personally, I can't.
09:24I'm afraid of flying, let alone jumping out of the airplane.
09:28I would die.
09:29I'm not a fan of skydiving.
09:31Are you?
09:32Now that we've talked about different types of traveler, let's talk money.
09:37When you are traveling, you need to make sure that you have enough money and you've
09:42planned your budget.
09:44So let's talk about money a little bit, shall we?
09:46A very nice idiom to use is, budget doesn't stretch to something.
09:55Budget doesn't stretch to something.
09:58What does it mean?
09:59If your budget does not stretch to doing something, that means you do not have enough money to
10:04do it.
10:05You cannot afford it.
10:07Your budget doesn't stretch to doing that.
10:10For example, our budget does not stretch to dining at a fancy restaurant every night.
10:19Our budget doesn't stretch.
10:20We cannot afford that.
10:22We can't afford going to a fancy restaurant every night.
10:26So what should we do?
10:28Maybe one of the things you need to do in this case is to travel on a shoestring.
10:35Travel on a shoestring?
10:37What does it mean?
10:38If you travel on a shoestring, you travel with very little money and without spending
10:44a lot of money.
10:46You go to the cheapest hotels or even a hostel or a motel.
10:49You don't go to fancy restaurants.
10:51You make your own meals.
10:53For example, they managed to travel on a shoestring by staying in hostels.
11:01They did not go to hotels.
11:03They stayed in hostels and so they traveled on a shoestring.
11:07They didn't spend a lot of money.
11:08So if you really want to enjoy your trip, you need to have a budget and then you need
11:14to stick to your budget.
11:18Stick to your budget.
11:19What does it mean?
11:20It means to carefully follow your planned amount of money for spending.
11:25How much money have you planned to spend on this five-day trip?
11:31Stick to it.
11:32Write down your expenses.
11:33For example, they had to stick to their budget so they avoided expensive attractions.
11:40They had a set budget.
11:41They wanted to stick to it and so they decided to avoid expensive attractions.
11:47But what happens if you don't stick to your budget?
11:51You may go over budget.
11:53There is no money left so you won't be able to enjoy your trip.
11:58Go over budget means to spend more money than you originally planned or allocated.
12:05For example, they went over budget on their vacation by staying in a more expensive hotel.
12:12They stayed in a more expensive hotel and so they could not stick to their budget.
12:18They went over budget.
12:20They spent more than they had planned.
12:23And that's it.
12:24I hope you've enjoyed this lesson.
