00:00Hey it's Adrian and today I have a very unique keyboard.
00:07This is a Skylong GK87 Pro mechanical keyboard and it is feature packed.
00:12There's a 1.7 inch screen that can be programmed with custom graphics and you can also upgrade
00:17it to a 2 inch screen if you like.
00:19There's also knobs that can be used for volume control, for advancing and going back for
00:24photos, video editing, or whatever you see fit.
00:27We also have a split space bar which makes it awesome for typing and you can also program
00:32it for secondary functions.
00:34There's also a ton of customization with 3 and 5 pin support.
00:38The screen can be swapped out for additional keycaps.
00:41The split space bar can be swapped out for a standard space bar.
00:44We have a 1000 Hz polling rate.
00:46So if all of that sounds good to you, let's take a closer look at the Skylong GK87 Pro
00:50and a big thanks to Skylong for sending this out for review.
00:54The box comes with the Skylong GK87 Pro and it looks beautiful in this color combination.
00:59There's also a USB Type-C to Type-A cable, additional switches, a keycap and switch puller.
01:05There's also a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi adapter that can actually be housed in the body of the
01:11keyboard and once you do that you can go ahead and just cover that up with this magnetic
01:16clip.
01:17Speaking of magnetic clips, there's also a magnetic backplate that goes on the rear of
01:21the keyboard.
01:22There's also an instruction manual, another stabilizer bar with a standard space bar if
01:27you don't want to use the split space bar but there's some benefits to using that.
01:32There's also additional keycaps if you want a more uniform color instead of having these
01:38red type of accents.
01:39An optional 2 inch screen can also be purchased if you want something with a larger display.
01:44Alright let's take a look at the design of the Skylong GK87 Pro and this is such a beautiful
01:51looking keyboard.
01:52It also feels really good in the hand, very premium coming in at around 2.3 pounds or
01:58about 1 kilogram.
02:00This feels very planted when you're typing and if I put it down you can see there's minimal
02:05kind of shifting or sliding.
02:06I'm really putting effort on there because we do have rubber feet at the back.
02:10But just taking a look at the front, so we have this two-tone type of design, basically
02:15an all white type of case and then in terms of the keycaps we have this white, gray and
02:22pops of red.
02:24But then there's also additional keycaps on here if you want something a bit more uniform
02:29and you don't want all of the red accents.
02:32Now one thing to note with this keyboard is that we have three CNC aluminum knobs so these
02:37feel cold to the touch, really high quality and they have hard stops or increments on
02:43them.
02:44So you can remove these or just keep say one for a volume adjustment and then go ahead
02:49and put some of the keycaps up here.
02:52Now the other thing with this keyboard is we do have this 1.7 inch screen and you can
02:57upload custom GIFs or images here but there is also an optional 2 inch screen that you
03:04can buy.
03:05So it's basically an ABS type of build on here but we do have some elements of metal.
03:11So on the rear there is this magnetic snap on plate and this has the GK87 Pro writing
03:19right there.
03:20It looks really nice and if I run my fingers along it you can kind of feel the texture
03:24on here.
03:25It looks sharp.
03:26Now we do also have a port here for USB type C charging or to use this in wired mode and
03:31we have a switch to go between 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth or wired mode.
03:37There are 79 keycaps on here along with the 3 knobs and this 1.7 inch screen.
03:42Now you can actually pop this screen off and go ahead and put in additional switches here
03:48that are included in the package so you can have a bit more functionality if you don't
03:53want to use the screen.
03:54Here's what the keycap profile looks like from the side and again these are PVT keycaps
03:59which are shine through with NORC facing LEDs.
04:02The second magnetic element on here is this little cover with the Skylong logo and this
04:07is where we have access to the 2.4 GHz wireless adapter that you can stow away nice and cleanly
04:14in the keyboard body.
04:15Now if we take a look at the rear of the keyboard this is where we have the rubber feet so there's
04:205 in total and then we have 2 stage adjustment feet so that's the first one right here and
04:27a second one actually let me do it on the closest one to the camera lens just like so.
04:32By the way if you're not a fan of the split spacebar you do have a standard spacebar that's
04:37included so you can just swap these out for that if you like.
04:41So yeah all in all the keyboard looks beautiful, it feels really beautiful.
04:45This would fit in any type of office environment or home workspace.
04:49Now I'm not going to take mine apart but here's what it looks like with an expanded view if
04:54you're wondering.
04:55So there's a quick look at some of the specs feel free to pause and review or jump ahead
04:59to the next section.
05:00I'm now going to pair the GK87 Pro with my Z Fold 6 so I flipped the switch on the back
05:05to Bluetooth so I'll press and hold the function key and 1 and I'll press and hold that down
05:11until it puts it in pairing mode and then I'll just go ahead and scan on my phone and
05:17I can see it right here GK87 keyboard I'll tap on that go ahead and hit pair.
05:25And it is that quick so it's automatically paired on my phone.
05:29And just to test it out let's go ahead and type so Skylong GK87 Pro and it's that simple.
05:37I'll go ahead and pair it to my S24 Ultra now so I'll hold down function and 2 I'll
05:42just do a long press on it to put it in pairing mode and I can see the indicator flashing
05:47on the screen which is handy to have.
05:48So I'll go ahead and hit scan GK87KB again hit pair and now if I press the Windows button
05:58takes me to the home screen or the Google Browse screen so yeah everything is working.
06:03If I go back and I press function 1 to switch to the Z Fold 6 go ahead and hit that and
06:10it takes me back to the home screen.
06:12There's a bunch of different switch options for the GK87 Pro you can get the Gateron red,
06:17yellow or brown switches the 3.0 version.
06:21Now I did go with Skylong's own CuCl2 or a copper chloride silent switches and you can
06:27see the color does resemble copper chloride quite nicely.
06:30Now these switches look great and they're so smooth in terms of the travel.
06:36Now there's a pre-travel of 2 millimeters and a max travel of 3.8 millimeters.
06:42Now these are just so quiet it's so pleasant to type with these and it really pairs well
06:47with my MX3 you can hear these are very quiet clicks and I've really gotten used to quiet
06:53clicks and now with quiet typing these pair just so nicely.
06:58Now I did buy Logitech's MX Mechanical Tactile Quiet switches for that keyboard and I know
07:04you're probably thinking like why are you saying the name Logitech and mechanical keyboard
07:07in the same sentence but I just want to show just kind of the night and day difference
07:12between what it actually should sound like if you're advertising quiet switches versus
07:17what Logitech thinks quiet switches are.
07:20Alright so this is what it sounds like to type on the GK87 Pro with those CuCl2 silent
07:26switches.
07:27The microphone is about 15 inches away or 37 centimeters.
07:43And this is Logitech's idea of what tactile switches sound like on their MX Mechanical
07:47keyboard and you can hear just how loud that is.
07:56This is going to be a racket for anyone who's sitting next to you.
07:59The typing experience on the GK87 Pro is so pleasant you can hear just how quiet that
08:05sounds when I was going at it and I wasn't typing slowly either I was going at a pretty
08:10good pace.
08:11So if you want to use this while you're at home or if you're in an office environment
08:15like an open office this is not really going to bother anyone and of course if you want
08:18to make it look a bit more professional you can swap out these red elements with those
08:22gray keycaps that I showed earlier and you can just cut the RGB lighting.
08:26So yeah this keyboard will fit in pretty much anywhere.
08:29Now another thing is these split space bars.
08:31So I actually find myself hitting on either of these while I'm typing and the benefit
08:36of that is because they're so short it is very stable regardless of wherever you press
08:43whereas on a lot of the traditional space bars where they're really long sometimes you
08:48hit it on the right or left side and there's a little bit of vibration or play.
08:52None of that at all with the GK87 Pro.
08:55So you've heard what Logitech's quiet switches sound like compared to the GK87's quiet switches
09:02and they are worlds apart.
09:04So whatever Scalang has done in terms of the acoustic foam pads, the switch foam and the
09:09sound absorbing foam it's just a great combination and it's one of the most pleasing typing experiences
09:15to my ear.
09:16It may be a bit challenging to see but the top of the keycaps are actually a little bit
09:21rough and textured so you know it's a bit more planted of a typing experience and it
09:26doesn't feel slippery especially if you have oily fingertips like I do.
09:30It really makes typing very effortless.
09:33Let me know what you guys think of the sound coming out of the GK87 with their CUCL quiet
09:38switches.
09:39You know are you a fan of this type of sound when you're typing and when you're clicking
09:43your mouse it's just you know super quiet you could work late into the hours of the
09:46night without bothering everyone or do you need that very audible clickety clack feedback?
09:52Let me know down below.
09:53Here's what the standard space bar looks like if you go ahead and swap it out for the split
09:57space bar and here's what it sounds like.
10:13Let's take a look at the screen options so to go into the menu we'll hit function and
10:17the menu icon right here and we'll wait for it to boot in and using the arrow keys I can
10:22go into reset I can go into date and time switch the date time and format and then to
10:27go back you'll hit function and backspace.
10:30We could go into the backlight it's set to the maximum brightness and I'll go ahead and
10:34lower that to the dimmest setting now at the brightest setting I would like it a little
10:39bit brighter and the other thing is because it's not actually tilted upwards it's just
10:43kind of flat if you have any type of bright light you know there is some glare that makes
10:48it hard to read so you'll definitely want to keep this on the max brightness so I would
10:52like if the screen could kind of be angled upwards a bit and if it could be a little
10:57bit brighter especially if you're in a bright room.
10:59We can go into theme and style and you could set the play interval you know between when
11:04it switches into those recordings or those graphics so I have it I believe at two seconds
11:10under theme I didn't find anything under there so I'm not sure if that's something that's
11:14coming later and then under language you can switch it from Mandarin to English and that's
11:20about it in terms of the options now to go all the way back you'll hit function and the
11:25menu button again and once we're out of that let me just zoom out here and I'll show you
11:30how you can go into the animations so to do that you'll hit function and the tilde key
11:36right here and you'll see it's going to cycle through the various animations so this friendship
11:41one is one that I uploaded same with this Simpsons opening intro here and then you can
11:46always go right back into the screen so very simple to operate.
11:51Let's take a look at the RGB lighting there's a ton of customization here so function and
11:56down arrow is just going to lower the brightness or completely cut it off and then function
12:01and up is going to put it to the maximum output now function and left is going to slow down
12:07the effect and then function and right is really going to speed things up now in terms
12:14of changing the effects we can hit function and then the minus button here and you could
12:19cycle through five different effects and it's just going to keep cycling through now
12:23if you go to the other key to equal and plus you're also going to get different effects
12:29and there's another five effects that you could cycle through of course you could do
12:31all this with the software as well let me just go back to this rainbow effect you can
12:36also press function and zero to just pause the lighting effect if you like that and then
12:40you could do function nine to just cut the backlight completely off and if you want to
12:45conserve battery life you could hit function and left control and just take a look at the
12:49F row so you can see it's flashing F2, F3, F4 and it's going to go through 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and then
12:56finally 10 and it's going to cycle back to F1 so F1 is going to be a timeout of 5 minutes you know
13:0310 minutes all the way up to 45 minutes and then F10 is just going to completely never put it to
13:10sleep here's some general controls to know so function and windows will enable or disable the
13:15windows key which is handy if you're going to be gaming if you hit function and 4 and hold that
13:21down you could see it lights up from Z to M so that's around 60 to 70 percent of battery and if
13:27it goes all the way to the question mark then you're fully charged by the way whenever you hit
13:31caps lock you could see it with the indicator light on here there's also an indicator light
13:35for a scroll lock if you're using that key cap and then there's one to show if you're in Windows
13:40mode or not the keyboard also works wonderfully for gaming since we do have n-key rollover support
13:46and a thousand Hertz polling when you're using it in wired or wireless mode using the 2.4 gigahertz
13:52adapter let's take a look at the Skylong software now it's not the most user-friendly software out
13:57there there is a learning curve but just as a quick overview once you open it up you can't do
14:01anything under standard but you can go into layer 1 or Windows or layer 2 if you're gonna be on Mac
14:07now I'm on Windows now what I could do is I could go ahead and you know click on a key for example
14:13so I could click on T here and then you know remap it to N for example you hit save apply it and the
14:20change is made now anytime you want to reset you would just hit that to go ahead and reset now
14:26these are where the knobs are and you could see it's very small on here but at the top right this
14:33shows volume down and then under it is volume up and then pressing down is mute so that's kind of
14:40how you would map these so for example instead of pressing down to mute I would click on that
14:46I could delete mute and go ahead and do something else like say backspace hit save and then hit
14:53apply and then it would take that change so for example if I'm a notepad right here I'm gonna
14:59press down and you can see it's now going to backspace instead of you know me pressing the
15:06backspace button so that's how you can kind of program these and of course I have three knobs
15:11on here so you can do the same thing and program the additional knobs now you can see right here
15:17is showing three or sorry six keycaps but actually I have a screen here if I went ahead pop the screen
15:23off and put in keycaps I could go ahead and program these you know for whatever I see fit
15:30in terms of a size reference this is the Skylon GK75 compared to the GK87 Pro so you can see
15:37it's a little bit wider than on the GK75 and again here's the difference in terms of switches
15:41and for further reference this is what the brand new GK104 Pro looks like compared to the GK87 Pro
15:55and you can see just how much wider that is now the review for the 104 Pro is coming very soon
16:01so make sure you're subscribed for that and if you've lost your manual feel free to pause and
16:06take a look so there's a top section and a bottom section so I'm curious to hear what you guys think
16:13of the Skylon GK87 Pro when it comes to typing I definitely rate this in my top 10 after reviewing
16:21a bunch of mechanical keyboards the typing experience on there is just fantastic especially
16:26if you're someone who is a fan of you know that silent type of sound whether it be using a mouse
16:32or typing this definitely delivers it's actually exceeded my expectations especially compared to
16:38you know some other brands what they consider to be sound but the best part is that you're
16:42not sacrificing the typing experience you still have great key travel they're very tactile key
16:47presses it's like having the best of both worlds the screen is a unique addition however I would
16:51like to see a little bit more refinement in future versions maybe the ability to have it tilt upwards
16:57or to get a little bit more bright and definitely for the software to be a little bit more user
17:02friendly if you're looking for a keyboard with solid build quality great sound profile and typing
17:07experience I'm gonna leave links down below to check out or to pick up the GK87 Pro and if I
17:12have any coupon codes I'll leave those down below as well and if I can ask a huge favor would you
17:18mind liking it subscribing it truly does help me out quite a bit and don't forget to check out some
17:23of my other tech reviews I review a bunch of different tech products on this channel I'll
17:27sure you'll find something you like and I hope to see you in the next one soon
