00:00Here's the game where knowledge is king and lady luck is queen.
00:14It's the Joker's Wild.
00:16Now here's the host of our show, Jack Barry.
00:23Thank you very much.
00:27Most importantly, welcome back once again to the Joker's Wild, where the most unpredictable
00:31things happen and where players try to spin the category wheels and make $500 or more
00:35and become the champion.
00:36Most of you who are watching our program, our last program, Day Before Thanksgiving,
00:41know that we had a very, very attractive contestant on who attempted to answer a question based
00:48on Rona Barrett's bestselling book, The Love-O-Maniacs.
00:52Quite a brouhaha ensued here on the program because the contestant answered the question
00:57with many, many answers.
00:59We on the program, our judges, thought that the answers were incorrect.
01:02A check of the tape after the program revealed that one of those answers might indeed have
01:07been correct.
01:09So we are bringing her back, in fairness, to play another time, plus which I'm not a
01:13superstitious man, but she also happens to be a deacon in the Presbyterian church, and
01:19I am about to defy that.
01:21So with those words, we ask now Johnny Jacobs to reintroduce one player and the challenger,
01:27if you will, John.
01:28Okay, Jack.
01:29Returning for a second chance on The Joker's Wild, from Pacific Palisades in California,
01:34is Karen Proulx.
01:35And her challenger was an attorney working on the Manson trial.
01:42Here is Lee Barker.
01:43Well, nice to see you for the first time, Lee, and happy to have you back for a second
01:51chance.
01:52Karen, are you happy to have this second opportunity?
01:53Thrilled.
01:54We, you know, you did say several things.
01:56The question, the correct answer was Love O' Maniac, to Rona Barrett's fantastic book,
02:01and you first said love, and then what did you say, maniac?
02:04Well, I didn't understand that you wanted the book title.
02:06Right.
02:07I thought you wanted what kind of maniacs they were.
02:09I see.
02:10Well, we're maniacs enough not to have given you a chance to answer yesterday, but we're
02:13going to give you a chance to play again, and we'll wish you luck here.
02:17Lee, you worked on the Manson trial?
02:18Yes.
02:19I handled some of the motions the defense made for mistrials, and I was opposing the
02:24mistrial motions.
02:25I see.
02:26Well, we have certainly two very interesting contestants to play our Jokers Wild Game,
02:29and we'll find out which of them will prevail as the winner right after these words.
02:34When your child has diarrhea, you want to be extra sweet to them, but giving them sodas
02:40and sports drinks isn't the way to do it.
02:42They contain so much sugar, they can make diarrhea worse.
02:46Give them Pedialyte instead.
02:48It has the proper balance of carbohydrate and electrolytes.
02:52When you give them Pedialyte at the first signs of diarrhea, you help prevent the risk
02:56of dehydration, which is the sweetest thing you can do for them.
03:01Doctor recommended Pedialyte.
03:03There's no other bar quite like it.
03:05The white stripes are a moisturizing cleanser.
03:08The pink stripes have a nourishing lotion with vitamin E. These keep you clean and soft.
03:16These replenish your skin's essential nutrients.
03:21They work together to create Dove Nutrium, the first dual formula bar that does more
03:26than just clean and moisturize.
03:29It nourishes your skin to a healthy, radiant glow.
03:42I prefer using natural ingredients.
03:51That's why I take Beano.
03:53Beano helps prevent gas from problem foods with a natural food enzyme.
03:57It's not a drug.
03:58So, if you prefer a more natural approach, prevent gas with Beano.
04:02I'm not eating that.
04:05No way.
04:07I don't even want to touch it.
04:11Ew!
04:12It smells.
04:13How old is this?
04:16Is there anything else?
04:18Having too much wine with dinner?
04:20Tonight, make it Roni, Pasta Roni, like rich and creamy fettuccine Alfredo.
04:25And all you'll hear is...
04:27Can I please have some more?
04:29Roni, leave the wine behind.
04:33Okay, players, I think you know the rules of the game.
04:35Try to make pairs or triples and get the $500.
04:37And if at any time you get three jokers that can answer one question on any of the five categories,
04:41you automatically win the game and $500.
04:43Here are the categories which we'll be using in the game between you two attractive people.
04:47They are Humphrey Bogart, Women's Lib, Pianist, Astronomy, and Horse Racing.
04:52Yuck.
04:53We're going to let the lady go first.
04:54Wish her good luck in this, her second try here in the joke as well.
04:57Spin the levers and let's see what categories you get.
05:01Joker, Pianist, Astronomy.
05:04How do you want to play it?
05:06I think I'll take Pianist.
05:07All right, that's a $100 question.
05:09You made a pair with the Joker.
05:11Comedy and classical music can go together as this Danish wit and pianist has proven.
05:16Who is he?
05:17Victor Borga.
05:18Right for $100.
05:22Your first thing, Lee Barker.
05:24Good luck.
05:28Joker, Horse Racing, Women's Lib.
05:32I think I'll go off the board for Astronomy.
05:38All right.
05:39One of the rules of the game is if you've got a Joker,
05:41you can go off the board and play one of the other categories.
05:43And this time you're taking Astronomy for $50.
05:46Name the only planet that only has one moon.
05:52The Earth.
05:53Right, for $50.
05:56$100 for $50.
05:57Sharon, your second spin.
06:00Joker.
06:01Joker.
06:02Oh, hey!
06:09There it is.
06:10Happens about once a week.
06:11And now under the rules of the game, Karen, if you can answer any one question on any of the five categories,
06:18you will have won the game and $500 and get a chance to spin for some beautiful prizes.
06:22Which category would you play?
06:24Well, I did well with Pianist, so I think I'll stay with it.
06:28A little louder.
06:29I'm sorry, I'll stay with Pianist.
06:30Pianist, all right.
06:31This is it.
06:32Very important question.
06:33Can get you $500 and the championship.
06:35His story was made into a film starring Tyrone Power.
06:39And his son is carrying on the family name as a fine pianist in his own right.
06:43For the championship of the Joker's Wild, who was this popular society pianist?
06:48I believe it's Peter Duchin.
06:50I need...
06:51No, that is not correct.
06:53Now, the second time I cannot accept that.
06:55The question this time was very clear.
06:57I asked who was the society pianist.
07:00And it is Eddie Duchin.
07:02Peter Duchin is his son.
07:03One of the rules of the game is you have to give the right answer.
07:06Now, this time, Karen, I'm going to have to hold fast to this.
07:08That's right.
07:09Sorry to disappoint you because you could have won the game at this point,
07:11but the game just goes on and it is your turn, Lee Barker.
07:17Joker, Bogart, Women's Lib.
07:23I'll take Women's Lib.
07:25All right, $100 question.
07:27Who is the author of Sexual Politics?
07:36Bella Asbug.
07:37No, that's not right.
07:41Bella Asbug?
07:44Wait until she gets a hold of you.
07:47I assume you mean Bella Absug.
07:49But that's not right either, so it doesn't make any difference.
07:52Your opponent now gets your $100 and she can tell me who is the author of Sexual Politics.
07:56Is it Kate Millett?
07:57That's right.
07:58You go to $200.
08:01All right, it was your turn.
08:05Joker, astronomy, Bogart.
08:09I think I'll take Bogart.
08:11It's a $100 question.
08:12What was the name of the naval captain that Bogie played in the Kane mutiny?
08:21Quigg?
08:23Yes, we'll accept.
08:24Captain Quigg is right.
08:25You go to $300.
08:34Astronomy, Women's Lib, Canis.
08:38Well, I'll go for astronomy.
08:40All right, it's only a $50 question, unfortunately for you, and here it is.
08:43What do nearly all of the large astronomical telescopes use for observing instead of lenses?
08:49They use something other than lenses.
08:51They use a mirror.
08:52That's right.
08:53You go to $100.
08:55Towards the end of the round, $300 to $100.
08:57All right, Karen.
09:00Joker.
09:01Joker.
09:06It looks, Ramon, like you're going to do it twice in one game.
09:09What do you do?
09:10Bogart.
09:11All right, if you answer this correctly, you will have $500, but you still give your opponent his final turn.
09:16In which of Bogie's films would you find the characters Charlie Allnut, A-L-L-N-U-T, and Rose Sayer?
09:25Would you repeat the names again, please?
09:26Yes, indeed.
09:27In which of Humphrey Bogart's films would you find the characters Charlie Allnut, A-L-L-N-U-T, and Rose Sayer?
09:35S-A-Y-E-R.
09:41No answer?
09:43I'll have to give it to your opponent, then.
09:45If he can answer, it'll be a tie ball game at $300 apiece.
09:48For Whom the Bell Tolls?
09:50No, sir.
09:51The African Queen.
09:52One of the most famous.
09:53The African Queen.
09:54It is your spin, however, Lee.
09:56You could catch up now.
09:59Astronomy, Joker, Astronomy.
10:06I'll go for Astronomy.
10:08I would assume since you've been taking $50 ones, you'll take the $200 one.
10:11This would give us a tie ball game if you're right.
10:13There's a name for the full moon that's nearest the autumnal equinox, a very common name.
10:18What's that full moon called?
10:20I...
10:21I...
10:22No answer.
10:23No answer.
10:24If you can answer this question, Karen, you'll pick up his $200, which will bring you to $500,
10:29and you would be the champion of the Joker's Wild.
10:32What is that full moon called?
10:36Harvest Moon.
10:37Right, for $500.
10:38Ah!
10:39Really?
10:40Congratulations.
10:41Congratulations, Karen.
10:43You know something, Karen?
10:44Your stay in this program reads like the perils of Pauline.
10:47I never saw a girl get in so much trouble and pull it out at the last moment.
10:51You've won $500.
10:52In our moment, you've got a chance to spin for some prizes.
10:54Lee, I'm afraid we had a lot of categories up here that weren't quite up your alley.
10:58Not exactly.
10:59At any rate, we're delighted to have had you on the program.
11:01Backstage, there will be some prizes for you.
11:03Let's give another round of applause for Lee.
13:37Our next champion is Karen Pro, who, like the perils of Pauline,
13:41has survived all hazards and has come through a champion.
13:44As happens to all champions on the program,
13:46we give them an opportunity to spin for prizes.
13:48Up on the wheels now are devils and jokers,
13:50mostly jokers and a few devils.
13:52Every time you spin three jokers, you win a prize.
13:54Every time a devil comes up, you lose.
13:56Here is the first prize, Karen, for which you will be able to spin.
13:59It's a Bell & Howell dual-late camera and projector outlet
14:02with power zoom camera, projector, tripod, and lights,
14:06and stop-go exposure indicator.
14:08That's yours if you get three jokers, spin, and good luck.
14:13Joker.
14:14Joker.
14:15Joker.
14:19That's prize number one.
14:20Now you're going to have to make some decisions,
14:22because here's Johnny Jacobs to tell you about prize number two.
14:25Karen, we will fly you to Las Vegas
14:27for a stay at the Tropicana Hotel & Country Club,
14:29the Tiffany of Las Vegas.
14:31Enjoy outstanding entertainment,
14:32climaxed by the never-before-fully Berger,
14:34the Tropicana Hotel & Country Club.
14:37Now your decision is, do you quit with the movie outfit,
14:39or do you risk it and go on for that lovely trip to Las Vegas?
14:42What do you do?
14:45You're going? All right, spin, good luck.
14:47Coming up are Joker.
14:49Joker.
14:50Joker.
14:51Yeah.
14:52All right, you've got two of them.
14:55Your third spin coming up now.
14:56We're going to tempt you a little bit,
14:58because here is the third prize you can try for.
15:01You could win our treasure chest of prizes.
15:04First, musical luxury with deluxe channel master radios
15:07and cassette player recorder worth $200,
15:10and year-round cooking on a Charm Glow gas grill for $310.
15:16Plus, the beautiful Gibson refrigerator-freezer worth $515
15:22for a total value of over $1,000.
15:28Now the choice is yours.
15:31Or go on.
15:34Okay, she's going.
15:35Here it comes.
15:36Joker.
15:37Joker.
15:38Joker.
15:39Yeah, hey.
15:44You've got it all the way.
15:46Thousands of dollars worth of prizes are yours right this minute,
15:49and they'll never be taken away from you.
15:51All right, Karen, now you have one more choice to make.
15:54I know, I know.
15:55You can quit right now and take your prizes and your $500 with you.
15:59If you decide to go on, and if you lose the next game,
16:03you do keep your prizes, but you lose the $500.
16:05That goes into our jackpot.
16:07If you should win two more games, you would break the jackpot.
16:11In the jackpot now is $2,500.
16:15In addition, for breaking the jackpot,
16:17you would also take home this magnificent prize.
16:21It's the 73 Vega, the little car that does everything well.
16:24Rides comfortably, corners flat, and steers easily.
16:27The 73 Vega from Chevrolet, building a better way to see the USA.
16:34And now the decision is yours.
16:36Do you quit, or do you go on and take a risk?
16:43Jack, can you...
16:46Why don't you tell me the categories?
16:49That wouldn't be fair to the other players.
16:51All right, I will go on.
16:52She's going on anyway, all right?
16:55New sport is going on,
16:57and we will have an exciting game, I'm sure,
17:00in store for Karen, bro.
17:02Father, help me.
17:03Because each time we have one champ to come on,
17:06make the decision to go on, we have to have another player.
17:08So, Johnny, would you introduce the next player, please?
17:11I will, Jack.
17:12Our next player teaches communications at Loyola University.
17:16Let's welcome Father Michael Callahan.
17:20Welcome to our program, Father Callahan.
17:23We have here, we don't want to start inter-scene warfare,
17:27but we have a deacon in the Presbyterian church
17:30playing against Father Callahan.
17:32Father, is it true that your own father,
17:35your real-life father,
17:36was the famous boxing champion, Mushy Callahan?
17:39That's right, Jack.
17:40Is that right?
17:41Well, something's funny about that,
17:42because my recollection, I'm a boxing fan,
17:44was that Mushy was Jewish.
17:46Well, that's right also.
17:47Your father was Jewish?
17:48Yes, and my mother was Catholic.
17:49You're the only Jewish Catholic I've ever met.
17:52Is that a fact?
17:54Yeah, the Jewish part's all on the Callahan side.
17:57What little tiny bit of Irish I have is on my mother's side.
18:00Your mother's name is Rosenblum, no doubt, huh?
18:03Almost.
18:04For goodness sakes.
18:05Were you interested in the fight business yourself
18:07before you decided to go into the clergy?
18:09Not really, not really.
18:10I think my dad tried to get me to fight a little bit,
18:13but it wasn't my bag, really.
18:17Not really.
18:19We're delighted to have you on the program with us,
18:21and now we're going to demonstrate
18:23what two fighters can do, Presbyterian, Catholic.
18:25Here we go, showing you the categories
18:27that are going to be used.
18:28They are comedians, anatomy, civil war,
18:32holidays, and basketball.
18:34The champion always goes first.
18:35She is risking $500 to play against you, Father Callahan.
18:38Spin, Karen, pro, and good luck.
18:42Joker.
18:43Joker.
18:44Oh!
18:46Oh!
18:52That's unreal.
18:53That's unreal.
18:58This show has been on the air 13 weeks, I believe.
19:02This is the first time that this has ever happened.
19:05We often said to ourselves, how come it's never happened?
19:08Nobody ever got three jokers on their first spin.
19:10This is the first time.
19:11Father Callahan, I have a special announcement
19:13I'll make about you in just a moment.
19:14We have a special rule for this.
19:15Meantime, Karen pro, with the craziest luck you ever had,
19:19if you can answer one question on any of the five categories,
19:23you will win for the second time
19:24and bring your total winnings to $1,000.
19:27Which category do you select?
19:29Well, gee, holidays, I believe.
19:33All right.
19:34Answer this correctly, you'll win $500.
19:36Added to the $500 you had, you will have $1,000.
19:39Miss the question, and the game will go on
19:41with Father Callahan answering his first question.
19:44Probably begun as a spring fertility celebration,
19:48this holiday sounds like a pilot's distress call.
19:51For the championship of the game, name it.
19:54Like a pilot's distress call.
19:56Distress call.
19:57SOS, you mean?
19:58I mean, is that what you...
19:59Is that your answer?
20:00No.
20:01Like a pirate's distress...
20:02I can't help you any more than that, except...
20:03Okay.
20:04I'll read the question again.
20:05Okay.
20:06Probably begun as a spring fertility celebration,
20:07this holiday sounds like a pilot's distress call.
20:10For $500 and the championship, what is it?
20:16April Fool's Day.
20:18No, May Day.
20:21Oh.
20:22May Day.
20:23Of course.
20:24That's what pilots say when they're in trouble.
20:25I've never been a pilot.
20:27I'm sorry, you don't get your second game yet,
20:30but with your luck, who knows?
20:32Father Callahan, Father Callahan,
20:35you are still in the game.
20:36I would have told you, had she been able to win,
20:38I would have told you that you would be invited
20:40to come back and play again on another program
20:42because you didn't even have a chance
20:43to answer one question.
20:44However, that's not necessary.
20:45You're still in the game, so here's your first spin.
20:48Good luck.
20:49Go to it.
20:50I've been looking forward to this.
20:52Joker, Civil War, Civil War.
21:00History is my worst subject, but I'll take Civil War.
21:03It's a $200 question, and here it is.
21:05The famous line, Damn the torpedoes.
21:07Ooh, I'm sorry, I said a terrible word in front of you, Father.
21:10Damn the torpedoes is generally credited
21:12to the well-known Civil War admiral
21:14remembered for his victories at New Orleans and Mobile Bay.
21:17For $200, name him.
21:20Stephen Farragut.
21:22Wow.
21:23Here I go again.
21:24Judges, I can't accept it.
21:26I can't accept it.
21:27I cannot.
21:28I cannot accept the answer.
21:29If your opponent can give me the correct answer,
21:31she will pick up $200.
21:33I believe it's David Farragut.
21:34That's right.
21:35You get $200.
21:36David Farragut is right.
21:38This lady has nine lives.
21:40We'll be back in just a moment with the outcome of this game,
21:43but first, these words.
21:44Move in a dozen directions.
21:46Mom, don't forget practice is at five.
21:48Oh, did you get the car out of the shop today?
21:50Mom, I've got to study for my math test.
21:52I have to find a sitter for the weekend.
21:55So what's for dinner?
21:56Pull it all together with Manwich.
21:59You live with two teenagers.
22:00Whoa, life is a zoo.
22:03And it's always feeding time.
22:05I'm sure glad I found these.
22:07Chef Boyardee overstuffed Italian sausage ravioli
22:09and spaghetti and jumbo meatballs
22:11for bigger kids with bigger appetites.
22:13From Chef Boyardee.
22:15Maybe it's not work that's stressing you out.
22:17Maybe it's hormones.
22:18They fluctuate long before menopause.
22:20Don't wait till menopause to get Estroven
22:22with plant estrogens that act like your own
22:24to help balance hormones naturally, gently, safely.
22:27Don't wait till menopause to get Estroven.
22:30Which laundry tab gets clothes remarkably clean?
22:34The one that starts dissolving remarkably fast.
22:38What a surprise.
22:41Tide Rapid Action Tabs.
22:44This is Tough Grease.
22:47These are the top two dishwashing liquids.
22:53And this is the one that cuts Tough Grease best.
22:57Dawn.
