From bowling barefoot to picking up 300 Test wickets, South Africa’s Makhaya Ntini has one of the most fascinating stories in cricket. In 1998, Ntini made his ODI debut against New Zealand, becoming the first-ever Black player to represent South Africa in cricket, a Test call-up soon followed.
His career seemed to end prematurely when he was charged and convicted of rape in 1999. Ntini maintained his innocence and was later acquitted of all charges. He returned to cricket in 2000 and in 2005 his best bowling performance came against the West Indies in Port of Spain, where his 13-wicket haul decimated the opposition, setting a record for the highest number of wickets taken by a South African in a Test.
Ntini’s 100th Test in 2009 was celebrated across the country, but it also became his penultimate Test. He was dropped from the team after the second Test of the series and never returned. He announced his retirement in 2011 during a T20I match against India.
