00:00I'm also greatly honored to be the first International Chancellor of Bradford University.
00:08I feel, for two other reasons, that this is a source of great pride for me.
00:18One, that in social inclusiveness, Bradford was considered number one university.
00:25I think this is a tremendous achievement.
00:28And secondly, in graduate employment, in north of England, it was number one university
00:34and number two overall in England.
00:37So I think you really have conferred a great honor on me to have elected me as your Chancellor.
00:51Very briefly to the graduates, I just have a few words of advice from my own experience.
01:04As you just saw today, I'm not a very good starter.
01:11I was always at my most vulnerable when I first went into bat.
01:18But the reason I was more successful than others was because I learned from my mistakes.
01:28I was better at analyzing my mistakes and then correcting them than other people.
01:36Successful people are not those who don't make mistakes, but who analyze their mistakes
01:42and eliminate them.
01:45When I came into cricket, after my first test match, I was dropped, kicked out of the team.
01:52Didn't come back until three years later.
01:58When I was trying to make it, everyone used to tell me, you don't have the talent.
02:03My older two cousins, who were my role models, they used to remind me were far more experienced
02:08and talented than me at my age.
02:14And throughout my cricketing career, I was told that it's impossible, you cannot do it.
02:22Similarly, when probably far more difficult than playing cricket was building the first
02:28cancer hospital in Pakistan, I held a conference of the top doctors in the city.
02:37Out of the 20 doctors, 19 said that it was impossible.
02:41You cannot build a cancer hospital in Pakistan.
02:47I also had a lot of ridicule, people laughing at me throughout various stages of my life.
02:55But this is really what I want to tell you.
02:59Successful people are fearless.
03:04They fight their fears.
03:06They're not scared of failure.
03:09They do not care what people say, because people change what they think all the time.
03:16I remember going into bat, and a whole crowd of people in Lahore Cricket Stadium cheering
03:23me, Lion of Lahore.
03:26I got out first ball, and the same crowd started cheering at me.
03:34And the next day when I did well in bowling, again they cheered me.
03:39So I realized that public opinion is fickle.
03:42Do not allow your lives to be driven by what people say.
03:48Go by what your objectives are, what your passions are, what your ideals are.
03:53And never, ever downgrade your ideals in the moments of weakness.
03:57When you've suffered a setback, that really is the time to reflect why you've suffered
04:03a setback.
04:05And correct the mistake and keep going towards that ideal.
04:09Because the problem is, it's not a defeat that destroys you.
04:14It's being demoralized by defeat that destroys you.
04:18As long as you keep learning from defeats, you will always keep coming back and get stronger
04:22all the time.
04:26You know, I wasn't the most talented, but it was this ability to keep coming back that
04:31I succeeded.
04:35People still laugh at me in politics.
04:38They think that I won't make it.
04:40But I think I will, after Harold Wilson, I'll be your next chancellor to become the prime
04:44minister.
04:45And a final piece of advice, you know, making money, seeking material well-being is fine.
05:06But always make money for an objective, higher objective.
05:11Never make money your objective, because it is the recipe for unhappiness.
05:20Finally, Baroness Amos, thank you for that compliment you paid me.
05:31I'm delighted.
05:35I'm also delighted that my first conferment of honorary degree as chancellor has been
05:40to you, in recognition of your distinguished contribution to public life, and particularly
05:47in the field of equal opportunities and international development.
05:52Vice Chancellor, ladies and gentlemen, I thank you all for your attendance.
