00:00Hello, today we are at the Model Railway Exposition at Calamford.
00:05Exhibition.
00:06Exposition.
00:07Exhibition.
00:08Expedition.
00:10We're here.
00:11We're here.
00:13It's been a life problem with that word.
00:16I came here two years ago, this Model Railway show,
00:20and the one in front of you is this wonderful layout which it was here when I last came
00:25and the amount of dedication and work that's gone into it
00:27and it's over 2,000 people on this single layout.
00:31Can you believe that?
00:32We've been talking about 30 or so.
00:34I mean just on that one alone and there's so much to look at.
00:36How many?
00:37How many?
00:38I roughly counted it about 30 but I don't feel like it was less than that.
00:41You want to take a guess, that's it?
00:4430, 29.
00:46How many?
00:4730, 29.
00:48What?
00:4935.
00:50All over?
00:51No, no, it was something else, don't worry.
00:572,218 people on there.
01:28Where?
01:34It's amazing the fact that all these things are moving.
01:35Now we went to one of those places, didn't we?
01:37Yeah.
01:52I think those birds in there, look, they're birds.
01:54Right.
01:57I think that was there before, wasn't it?
01:59Yeah.
02:24Now this one, as you can, I've never seen this one before, this one would be new.
02:34And it's got like a lot and a lot of foliage, hasn't it?
02:38Oh, there's a fox.
02:39There's two foxes, there's three foxes.
02:50And it's got all the water.
02:51I remember this one as well.
02:54I think one of my favourites, I like all the houses, look at that.
02:58Is that a funeral place?
03:00Yeah.
03:00And then what's that one, is that just like a post office?
03:03Paint, wallpaper, tools, and then the pub, and the fish merchant, and then the cafe.
03:15Now look at this, this is a cinema, and you can see all the people in there,
03:18it's playing like the organ, and there's an actual film going on.
03:22Oh, there's an actual film playing, I mean, I suppose they just put the phone on there,
03:25but there's an actual film playing.
03:28So like, imagine if you were like a really, really big person, this is literally it, isn't it?
03:31Like, if you were like God, like looking over, you can see in here, I mean,
03:35I suppose there could be a roof on there, but you know,
03:38but you're actually looking over like, oh look, they're all watching.
03:44My name is Peter.
03:46Nice to meet you.
03:47And now, is this your layout?
03:49It is one of four layers, yes.
03:53Very nice, so could you tell me about the one you've got here today?
03:56Well, the one here today is known as the Scale 009,
04:02so it represents a Welsh narrow gauge line of two feet,
04:09and buildings range from being what we call scratch built,
04:15i.e. there's no plan for them, from photographs, from other things,
04:21so that building would be a scratch built goods shed,
04:25and it's made of different materials.
04:27It's made from foam board, covered with paper.
04:32The roof is made from plastic material.
04:35So have you made these yourself?
04:36Yes, I didn't have a plan.
04:39It sort of evolved into what it is.
04:43It was started in 1997.
04:47Oh wow.
04:47Isn't it clever?
04:48Yes, and it went to its first rail exhibition
04:53in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands in 1999.
04:57Oh wow.
04:58And it's actually been going since then, with various things added to it.
05:05They have to be, as far as I'm concerned with modelling, it has to be fun.
05:09Oh yeah, definitely.
05:11There is no point in just building something to exhibit
05:15unless it's fun to operate, it's easy to operate,
05:19and there are little quirky things on it.
05:22So one or two of the layouts,
05:26on this particular one, there are a few things that you can spot.
05:30Yeah, a few people do that, I'm sorry, I wonder what is it?
05:34About spotting the animals?
05:36Yes, this one is more spotting people.
05:41Rather than animals, and it catches people out
05:44because certain people on it, people know,
05:50but they don't know who they really are.
05:54So you have here a gentleman who's a postman,
05:58who's next to his post van there, that is Mr Clifford.
06:04And Mr Clifford is the surname of postman Pat.
06:08Oh okay.
06:09His actual name, if you look at the actual site, he has a surname of Clifford.
06:17Is that Mr Clifton?
06:19That's him, Cliffton.
06:21But also here we have a demon dog, which has got red eyes,
06:28but next to him is a gentleman coming out of a coffin, Dracula.
06:34And he's Mr Alucard.
06:39So what's the rare Welsh treasure?
06:40The rare Welsh treasure in this particular case is these two wagons here,
06:45which are full of Welsh gold, and that is genuine Welsh gold.
06:54What's that, Idris?
06:56Idris, Idris.
06:58If you've ever read the books or saw the Tales of Ivar the Engine.
07:03Ivar the Engine.
07:04Ivar, yes, Ivar.
07:06Ivar the Engine, I've watched that many a time.
07:09You'll know Idris.
07:11There's Idris, it's the dragon.
07:14So yeah, do you have a lot of Welsh characters too?
07:18Well, it is a Welsh-based layout.
07:21All of my layouts are based in Wales, in mid Wales.
07:25Are you from Wales?
07:26No.
07:28I used to work, and we used to go a lot to Wales,
07:31but they're all Welsh layouts with names that are real places,
07:38but did not necessarily have a railway.
07:42And this is called Tannifron, which means below the hillside.
07:49So you are standing where you are standing,
07:52you're looking down from the hill onto the village.
07:58So it is below the hillside.
08:00I'll just get a bit of film from below.
08:03Yes, certainly, if you want to come around.
08:06And the year for all of my layouts is 1939 to 1945.
08:14So they're all within the war period.
08:18So you see different things that were associated with the war period.
08:26And characters, the typical dress of the characters.
08:32So have you had to paint every single one?
08:33I mean, of course you might.
08:34Yeah.
08:35Yes.
08:35Really?
08:36Yes, the characters all come unpainted.
08:39So you have to paint all of the characters.
08:42You must have a steady hand.
08:45Well, I've been modelling now since I was 15 years old.
08:50So I've been modelling some 55 years.
08:53So you get sort of a knack of doing things.
08:59It's just selecting characters for the particular role that you want them.
09:04The gentleman who is filling up his car down by the petrol pumps here
09:10is actually a doctor from another set of characters.
09:16And around his neck, if you look very closely,
09:18it's got a stethoscope.
09:20You can't actually see it on the model because I disguised it.
09:27Oh, that's brilliant.
09:28Thank you so much.
09:29That's been really interesting.
09:31It's a lovely layout.
09:34So it's on YouTube?
09:35Mm-hmm.
09:36Just any time?
09:38Yeah.
09:38When you've edited it.
09:41I'll get you a business card.
09:43Oh, thank you.
09:44Yeah, I'll get you a card.
09:45You'll get the business card.
09:46I usually have one.
09:46We'll wait for the steam engine to come and then we'll go get your card.
09:49I usually have them inside the bag, but I must have more inside the car.
09:51I'll get them all for you.
09:54Bye.
11:16So
12:16so
12:46so
13:16so
13:31so
13:46so
14:05yeah you could do that like
14:0918 and two lamps.
14:11He's already counted them.
14:12Ah, good.
14:14Two lamps?
14:14I thought that's four.
14:16Oh, there is four lamps.
14:17Maybe four is it?
14:18All right.
14:18Yeah.
14:20I know I just called it two lamps.
14:21You're getting it wrong.
14:23Oh, come on.
14:25Because I've been braiding overnight.
14:33She's got plenty of food.
14:34She's starving.
14:35She hasn't had anything to eat since last night.
14:37You can call this a banana.
14:40You can have them.
14:40Watch it.
14:41Watch it.
14:42It's funny because you know minions, right?
14:48They go banana.
14:49Well, in Italian, that's how to say banana.
14:52This is how to say banana.
14:54So it's actually like a thing.
15:12What's your name?
15:13My name is Emma.
15:15And you've got a lovely display out today, haven't you?
15:18Thank you very much.
15:19Wonderful objects.
15:20Now, I'm not a professional inside this area.
15:23So do your objects have a special name?
15:27I like to call them vignettes.
15:30Little mini areas telling a little story between myself and my lovely husband.
15:36We have tried to cover as much genres and areas as possible.
15:45All built in scale 1-4-4, so N-Gage.
15:51And we're part of the SIG 1-4-4, which is Special Interest Group.
15:55We're very friendly and welcoming members from all over the world.
16:00And you've got these lovely little houses here.
16:04And you were saying about this one, you finished on Christmas Eve.
16:07Yeah, that was Christmas Eve.
16:08It had to be because Santa was arriving.
16:10How long did that take you?
16:12That one took me probably about two or three weeks.
16:15Mainly because snow takes a long time to dry.
16:19I'm trying to get it really flat, getting the right amount of water in it.
16:22And then it's got a glitter sprinkle on to try and make it look crispy.
16:27Have you ever done snow before?
16:28It was my first one to do it on a scene like this.
16:31I have done it on some artwork, but it's allowed to be dirty and not perfect.
16:38You can just splat it on and go, yeah, it's done.
16:41I want it to be absolutely flat.
16:43And which one is your favourite?
16:44I know I asked you this earlier, but which one is your favourite?
16:47Now, I had to have a rethink from when you asked me.
16:48You had to have a rethink?
16:49Oh.
16:50Now, I know I said Rose Cottage, but I personally am the Rose Cottage.
16:54Really?
16:55Because it was the first time I got the ducks to look a hundred percent.
17:00And you played the ducks, yeah?
17:01So there's some little tiny ones on there,
17:03and then there's a little teeny weeny weeny one walking along as well.
17:07Oh, wow.
17:08Tiny weeny weeny.
17:10Teeny weeny weeny?
17:11And then you've got a little cat there as well, haven't you?
17:13Yeah, most of the cats are all based on my cat, Paul.
17:16Oh, Paul's got...
17:17I've noticed Paul's in other books.
17:19Paul's got a rat, hasn't he?
17:20It's like a normal cat, isn't he?
17:21Do you ever have normal people's houses?
17:23He's just having a little chill.
17:24Really?
17:24There's Paul there.
17:25Paul.
17:26Isn't he?
17:26Oh, bless him.
17:28They're all made by a lovely gentleman whose company is called Hero Models,
17:33and he does lots and lots of stuff,
17:36but he does keep me in supply of cats,
17:38and he's a fellow cat lover himself.
17:40Oh, good, good.
17:42And I love these flowers.
17:43Have you done all of them yourself?
17:44So quite a few of those are...
17:47They'll be little tiny tulips.
17:50They're scratch-built,
17:52but the roses are made by a company called Bush.
17:56So are they made out of, like, wire?
17:57So wire and a little bit of paper and cardboard tissue.
18:02So you're making them with tweezers?
18:03Yeah.
18:06Special tweezers, not...
18:07Modelling tweezers,
18:08but so I have a straight one to hold it and an angle to twist.
18:11And do you do that through a magnifying glass?
18:14No, but I am now getting,
18:15as I'm moving towards a bigger birthday,
18:18having to do it with a lot more concentrated light than I used to.
18:21Yeah.
18:23I mean, I'd have to have a magnifying glass for that,
18:25but it's like a bit difficult.
18:29I mean, it's really creative,
18:30the fact that you've thought of all these, isn't it?
18:32Thank you very much.
18:36And these your husband just had?
18:38Yeah, these are his activities, yeah.
18:40So has he made these planes,
18:42or got the planes and then made a scene for them?
18:44Yeah, so he likes to do the unique and unusual,
18:48and the more unique and unusual, the better.
18:51So he'll find a plane,
18:53and then he enjoys doing the research
18:55to find the most different scheme and area he can do it in.
19:02And he is very passionate about telling a story,
19:05and a lot of them are based on sort of true events
19:08and real pictures and things like that.
19:12So your wife was just telling me about collecting your local projects,
19:16you know, under the name, yeah.
19:18Yeah, mostly aircraft,
19:20but venture into some vehicles,
19:22and finish show a few trains as well.
19:26So what do you love so much about doing these?
19:28I love the fact you can create a scene,
19:31put vehicles in a context,
19:32make them into a bit of slice of history.
19:35That's the most interesting part for me.
19:38I mean, they're just so detailed, aren't they?
19:39The way you've done them.
19:40So you just like find the plane and then add to it?
19:44Yeah, so generally the planes and the vehicles are all separate bits and bobs.
19:48There's a lot more available now with 3D printing,
19:51so lots of the vehicles are 3D printed that you couldn't get a few years ago.
19:56And she was saying about the fact that you've won competitions?
20:01Yes.
20:01Yes?
20:02Yeah, the Northern show last year.
20:04Oh, nice.
20:05Yeah, well done.
20:08Yes, thank you.
20:10Thank you very much.
20:13Are you ready?
20:14Go see what else there is?
20:15Let's go.
20:21Well, what a wonderful day we've had,
20:23seeing all these and just loads going on,
20:26like trains, like real trains, like model trains,
20:28the little bits, everything.
20:29It was just so much going on today.
20:30So thank you very much for watching this.
20:32I do hope you enjoyed.

22:27Make me change my mind
22:31It's a no-no now
22:33Could have been good just like you can
22:40But it's not yesterday
