Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, one of the country's political heavyweights, has received a royal pardon. He had been sentenced to eight years in prison after returning to Thailand from over a decade of self-imposed exile. His pardon comes just a day after his daughter was elected as the country's new prime minister.
