Thailand’s ex-PM Thaksin gets royal pardon, says his lawyer
Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is included in a royal pardon for prisoners and his parole will end on Sunday (Aug 18), his lawyer Winyat Chartmontri told Reuters on Saturday (Aug 17).

00:00Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is included in a royal pardon for
00:06prisoners, ending his parole this Sunday, according to his lawyer.
00:11As reported by the Thai-language newspaper Madashan, the royal pardon will immediately
00:16free Thaksin from his commuted sentence for corruption cases.
00:20His original eight-year sentence was commuted to one year almost a year ago, and he has
00:25been on parole since earlier in 2024, with his release initially scheduled for August
00:3031.
00:32The king granted amnesty to prisoners, detainees, and those on parole to provide them with a
00:38new opportunity to contribute to society, according to a statement published on the
00:43Royal Gazette website on August 17.
00:46Thaksin is among approximately 7,500 individuals on parole who were released, according to
00:52Madashan.
00:54On August 16, Thaksin's youngest daughter, Pehtongtharn Shinawatra, won a parliamentary
01:00vote to become Thailand's new prime minister.
01:03She was selected after the country's constitutional court dismissed Sreta Thavasin, a member of
01:08the same few-Thai party, in an ethics violation case.
