Slow Internet Speeds in Pakistan: Government's Indifference | Maria Memon's Analysis
Transcript
00:00All the internet users across Pakistan are seeing that their phones, smart phones, computer screens are being used by internet apps.
00:11And whenever they use other internet apps, the internet has slowed down.
00:18According to some reports, the internet has slowed down by 30 to 40 percent.
00:25The government was completely silent.
00:28Today, on the 4th or 5th day of Kufr Tuta Khuda Khuda, the government addressed this issue.
00:33We met with Shaza Fatima Khawaja Sahiba, who is the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
00:38She said that the government in the country has neither slowed down nor stopped the internet.
00:46I can tell you with confidence that the government of Pakistan has neither slowed down nor stopped the internet.
00:53The Prime Minister said this on behalf of the public.
00:56But she asked a very specific question to the reporters there.
00:59It is obvious that the firewall is being tested all over the country.
01:05So this question was obvious.
01:07This question was asked to Shaza Sahiba.
01:09But she did not use the word firewall even once in her entire press conference.
01:15She did not give any reference to it.
01:17And in response to this question, she made the mention of the firewall round and round.
01:22Let's watch.
01:45You talked about it, then you talked about it.
01:47You talked about the ministry, about the ban.
01:50And you talked about the third thing.
01:52The third thing was about the firewall.
01:55Shaza Sahiba did not mention it or address this question.
01:58A few days ago, when the independent Urdu reporter met her in the parliament and confronted her,
02:04she admitted that the firewall is being tested all over the world.
02:10Firewall is a cyber security measure that every government in the world takes.
02:14International cyber security attacks are happening all over the country.
02:18Issues are being created in the media and in the public.
02:27Issues will be created when people's livelihoods will be directly connected to the internet.
02:31They will not be able to earn their daily bread.
02:33They will not be able to talk to their loved ones.
02:35They will not be able to hold their business meetings.
02:37They will not be able to live their lives as they used to.
02:43So, it is obvious that issues will be created.
02:45But why is the internet slow?
02:48It is true that we are seeing a considerable decrease in the speed of the internet.
02:53Shaza Sahiba gave a very beautiful logic to this.
02:56She gave a very technical briefing to someone.
02:59Let's watch how she conveyed the briefing.
03:03The news that the internet is being throttled was completely wrong.
03:08A few services of some apps were not being downloaded there.
03:14So, a large number of people in Pakistan started operating on VPNs.
03:19When you operate on VPN, you bypass the local CDN,
03:23through which you can access the internet and all your services,
03:27and you go to the live internet and live server.
03:31When a large number of people stop using caches,
03:34and go to the live internet,
03:36there is a lot of pressure on the live internet.
03:39Generally, you see a slowdown in the internet.
03:42Shaza Sahiba forgot to answer a very common question.
03:46Why is the need to use VPN?
03:49It has been so long since the use of VPN.
03:52All the government machinery uses VPN on Twitter and social media.
03:56And now people are buying VPN and spending a lot of money on it.
04:02If the internet has slowed down because of VPN,
04:04then the core problem is that why is the need to use VPN?
04:09The government says that we have not done anything and the internet has not slowed down.
04:12But the important aspect of this whole situation shows you
04:15that what is the issue that they are talking about creating?
04:19This is not just an issue, these are real people
04:21whose lives are affected by the slowdown and throttling of the internet.
04:27This is a great story by independent Urdu writer Mian Imran Ahmed.
04:31According to him, Rooj is a freelancer who designs logos on Fiverr and Upwork
04:35and runs her house with it.
04:37She is responsible for the four siblings and parents.
04:40According to Rooj, her rating of many designs was 4 stars.
04:43But due to the slowdown of the internet, the rating decreased.
04:46And in this way, her income also decreased.
04:49According to Rooj, due to the decrease in the rating, Fiverr has deactivated her account.
04:54Deactivation means that the income will be completely stopped,
04:57which I cannot afford because I have to pay electricity and gas bills
05:00and have to run the house.
05:02According to her, if the internet continues to be a source of hardship for a few more days,
05:05then her many years of hard work will be ruined.
05:08According to her, it takes many years to get a good rating,
05:12but it takes only a few minutes to spoil it.
05:15According to Rooj, the government cannot give us a job,
05:17so at least they should not kick us for our unemployment.
05:19The Prime Minister is talking about bringing a revolution in IT.
05:22We will only agree when he implements the internet service.
05:24YouTuber Shehzad Jameel told Independent Urdu
05:27that due to the slowdown of the internet, her views have decreased a lot,
05:30due to which her income has decreased to a great extent.
05:33According to him, by not uploading content a few days earlier,
05:36it makes the YouTube channel lag behind.
05:39If there is no internet service in the country,
05:41then they will have to close the YouTube channel.
05:44On the other hand, according to the President of the Pakistani Freelance Association, Tufail Ahmed Khan,
05:48Pakistan is the fourth largest freelancing industry in the world,
05:51of which there are approximately 20 lakh Pakistanis.
05:53According to him, freelancers earn approximately 35 crore dollars a year,
05:57but due to the continuous lag in the internet, we are losing our business every day.
06:02In this situation, we have joined the program with Mr. Osama Khilji,
06:05who is a digital rights expert.
06:07Along with him is Mr. Shehzad Shahid,
06:09who is a member of the CSE Committee,
06:11and Pasha from the Pakistan Software House Association.
