00:00Boxers, listen to my instructions at all times. Keep your head out, keep your punches up, no holding. When I say break, step back. Okay? Protect yourselves at all times. Touch gloves. Step back.
00:11So welcome along everybody and a very good evening underway here on TNT Sports and all eyes over the last few weeks of course on the Olympic Dream Factory.
00:33Here we are back in the pro game and given the speed of change in professional boxing over the past couple of years, every possibility that one or more of the young hopefuls on our undercard here could quickly put themselves in the frame for a dream job sooner rather than later on the undercard perhaps rubbing shoulders with some of the greats of our era.
00:53That is the incentive for all concerned, even Richie, late starters in relative terms at the age of 28, William Hamilton. They call him the future, but the future better start arriving quickly. What do you say?
01:07Well, yeah, good look to him. Back to the grind, Paul, as you said. We've seen a lot of quality over there in Paris, but it's back to your court. And for some professionals, this is where it all begins. And this is the real grassroots of the professional game.
01:22And yes, William Hamilton certainly left a little bit late at 28, but not too late, I suppose, at Cruiser. Let's see how he goes. He's 5-0 at the moment with those three knockouts, so he started his career off pretty well. And let's see if he can continue it tonight.
01:39I know to a degree he's been fed opponents at this stage in his career. That's how the programme operates. But he has been putting his men away quite early regularly. Three wins inside the two rounds. So I guess somewhere in the back of his mind, Richie, he said under the lights, live on TNT Sports tonight, need to do something similar here.
01:58Yeah, exactly. He'll want to impress, won't he, and want to get a knockout here. He's in against a fairly difficult opponent, I think, Perry Howe. Only been stopped four times, remember, in the 16 defeats that he's had. So he can be a little bit elusive and knows his way around. So Hamilton may just have to work a little bit harder for that knockout if it's to come. Setting up behind that lead hand, remember. And yes, he'll want to impress. Right on cue there, working with the jab. And that's what he should be doing. He's going to set up this big right hand.
02:27But he has got power, hasn't he, Hamilton? And he's fairly excited.
02:31Howe is aware of that, of course. Very, very busy 2024 for Howe. Seven fights already before tonight. Took Nathan Corless the six-round trip in Liverpool in March. Took Stephen Ward six rounds in Belfast in the same month. And he's packed in a couple of midsummer shows as well in June.
02:57And you can see style here for Perry Howe, just sitting back and can be probably elusive. If that connects, then that could be a knockout shot. Right hand over the top.
03:06But you've got to remember, Howe is moving backwards and he's always on that back foot. And he's just trying to contain Hamilton coming forward.
03:13And he'll need to keep that chin down and keep that left hand a little bit higher because I think that's what Hamilton's looking for, that right hand over the top.
03:21Hamilton looking for the big end to the round. That didn't quite eventuate.
03:51So however you smile, you feel perfect. Colgate Max White Ultimate. Deeply whitens for 10 times whiter teeth.
04:22The starting gun. But didn't have one of the big shots early. Howe didn't risk much in that opening round, which is fair enough also, Rich.
04:30Yeah, indeed. And listening to Alan Smith in that corner. He's an experienced man, isn't he, Alan Smith? And he was echoing what we were saying about setting that right hand up behind that jab.
04:40So he wants to see him jab a little bit more. Occasionally double jab to close that gap down. And then whip the right hand over.
04:47I think what Alan Smith would like to see him also do is just push him back to the ropes and that restricts his movements a little bit. And then you can set up those bigger shots.
04:58Keeps on reaching with that right hand. Maybe reaching a bit too much.
05:03This is when you need to call on a few feints here and there, Paul. Just feinting with that lead hand and lead foot and just trying to draw the lead of your opponent.
05:11Then as he obviously throws that jab out, that's when you've got to time that right hand counter over the top.
05:17And he's happy to wait.
05:24Happy to contain and happy to conserve fuel at this early stage. This is a scheduled sixth rounder, incidentally.
05:33All reasonable from his point of view.
05:38Only one win in the last 15 for Perry Howe.
05:48He's really lived two lives in his boxing career, Howe. He was one of the teenage whiz kids in Sheffield, apparently, about 20 years ago, Richie.
05:58In the famous Brendan Ingle Gym with all the stars of the era, Johnny Nelson, Eshaan Pickering, Junior Witter among them.
06:05What a school that was to learn in. But then he took a complete career change of direction, decided to join the army, served in the Royal Engineers and now comes back to boxing.
06:17Second time. I've just got to hope for his sake that the skills ingrained in all those youngsters still are there for him.
06:23Well, I mean, what a gym it was. It still is. The gym then when Brendan Ingle was with us was a conveyor belt of champions, wasn't it, that he used to produce?
06:34And the style that they had was just unbelievable. Switch hitters and very, very elusive boxers.
06:42If you made a mistake against them, then they would just punish you with knockout shots. I remember way back to Harold Graham, how good he was.
06:49Then, of course, Prince Nassim come through and then your Johnny Nelsons and, as you say, Junior Witters and Eshaan Pickering.
06:54Brian Rhodes, the list goes on, really does.
07:02So, yes, I'm sure he will have learned to think or two. Perry Howe.
07:12I.
07:20Trying to steal the last 30 seconds of it. There's an Olingle gym trick. Nice job, actually, last 30 seconds anyway.
07:42So.
07:45All inclusive to over 100 destinations.
07:48Adventure awaits on a Marella cruise at all protected mix and match menu is back at McDonald's.
07:54Choose any three for just three pounds.
07:56Only until the 27th of August.
07:58Go on, get mixing.
08:11Robert Riley in the corner with Perry Howe from Sheffield.
08:15Parsons Cross in Sheffield, making the trip down to the east end to the famous York or Bethnal Green for our show.
08:21Open it tonight on TNT Sport.
08:25A couple of rounds in.
08:27Referee, I should have mentioned slightly earlier.
08:29My apologies. Amy Pugh has not really had call to get involved.
08:33Amy Pugh, a very talented and welcome addition to the refereeing ranks.
08:38So she is in charge in the ring.
08:40The scoring is still being carried out by an equally qualified referee at ringside in Mark Bates.
08:47But which could we say with fair conviction that Hamilton has got to in the bank?
08:52Yeah, I think so.
08:53He's won the first two rounds.
08:54Not a lot really happening.
08:56He's just got to be more active with his lead hand for.
09:00And because you can see what how he's doing is on the back foot.
09:02He's waiting for these attacks.
09:03He's waiting with his right hand to come across.
09:07So you just got to take his attention away from that.
09:09And just keep popping away with the job and just bring his maybe his elbows down a little bit.
09:15Target the body occasionally with the job downstairs and just be a little bit more active with that.
09:20More variation with the lead hand to set up that backhand of his.
09:24Because he's obviously got power, Hamilton.
09:26But he's just he's just waiting a little bit too long.
09:31One or two good intentions early in this round.
09:34The third round from how?
09:37Sounded like a bit of a rollicking in the corner, actually.
09:39Yeah, rightly, didn't it?
09:46Now it's rather settling into the pattern of the first two.
09:52But Richie, is there a risk in Hamilton deciding I've got to put the show on and I've got to start throwing and throwing that he might leave himself too open?
10:00I think that's really what Alan Smith touched upon as well.
10:03Yeah, but the thing is, Paul, when you're working with the job,
10:05you're being fairly cautious anyway behind that shot, especially get your chin down behind you.
10:10You need children just working away with the job and doubling up the job and pushing the opponent back.
10:15You just got to be a little bit more busy because I was just waiting for these attacks here.
10:20He's fairly comfortable with just sitting back, containing what's in front of him.
10:25Because the pace is the slower the pace.
10:27It's soothing her down to the grounds.
10:28Hamilton has got to do a little bit more, got a bit more busier and get his opponents back onto the ropes
10:34and make them feet come square.
10:36And that's when he can switch the attack downstairs.
10:38Then he's not doing enough Hamilton at the moment.
10:45You can see the powers there, Paul, with him.
10:49Either hand, like I say, setting these attacks up and setting up these power shots.
10:54You've got to do that behind the lead hand.
11:01Largely, it's comfortable for Howe though, isn't it?
11:03And that's not a good thing from Hamilton's perspective.
11:05No, it's comfortable for him because the pace is really slow.
11:08And the pace is actually soothing Howe down to the ground.
11:12You can control Hamilton that's in front of him at the moment because there's not enough work coming from him.
11:16Just simple.
11:17Simple.
11:27So the halfway point here.
11:30William Hamilton is being taken along at a rather genteel pace, to tell the truth,
11:37against Perry Howe in our opener.
11:39A little later tonight.
11:41The young super welterweight from Northampton.
11:45Ben Fales on the card tonight.
11:47You may well be familiar with Ben Fales.
11:49Early career progress here.
11:50His twin brother, Karl.
11:54Virtually inseparable at any time of day or night.
12:00Both in great form as Ben arrives to face Romeo Rodriguez a little bit later.
12:07That's scheduled to be the fifth live fight of seven tonight here on TNT Sports.
12:24So a genteel pace so far.
12:26William Hamilton against Perry Howe in our opener at Cruiserweight.
12:30Six round scheduled.
12:33Hamilton five straight wins.
12:36We're starting to build a little bit of a reputation as quite a fast starter.
12:41Not tonight.
12:45Now he's just found it difficult, hasn't he, to nail his opponent with a shot
12:48because Howe is reluctant to come forward.
12:51He's on that back foot.
12:52He's just waiting for the attacks from Hamilton and Hamilton's not doing enough work.
12:56So it's just up to now it's a little bit frustrating.
12:59He's winning the rounds but there's not a lot in them.
13:01And literally not a lot happening.
13:03But he's just waiting for that one shot from Hamilton.
13:06You know it's in him.
13:07He's just got to set it up.
13:08And can he catch Howe flush?
13:13Difficult to catch a man who's constantly going back on the back foot.
13:17On occasion just leaves his chin in the air a little bit does Howe.
13:21And that's maybe why a jab downstairs and then whip the right hand.
13:25There's the jab downstairs.
13:27That's it.
13:28Take the attention away from a shot that's going to come over the top.
13:34And it's a great division at the moment, Paul, isn't it?
13:41The cruiserweight division.
13:44Dylan Smith, obviously the WBO champion.
13:46Quality kid he really is.
13:48Jack Massey, I think, is a European champion.
13:51Shev Clark, he's the British champion.
13:53Some real quality in the cruiserweight division.
13:58UK.
14:00British boxers.
14:02Dare I say, Richie, from about welterweight on in Great Britain at the moment,
14:06we could say the same about virtually every division, couldn't we?
14:10It's an exciting time.
14:11And lightweight.
14:12Start at lightweight.
14:14Exciting times, isn't it, Paul?
14:17For British boxing.
14:20So this is a moment of opportunity tonight for William Hamilton.
14:23Apparently various causes have delayed his progress overall.
14:27Mentioning that he's 28 years of age.
14:29A lot of niggly injuries along the way, apparently.
14:32And like a lot of fighters of his generation,
14:35chose exactly the wrong moment in history to turn pro as the pandemic hit.
14:40So that was two years gone immediately.
14:43Yeah, that's unfortunate.
14:44Obviously, he's left it late anyway, hasn't he?
14:46But with the pandemic, then it's just delayed things a little bit more.
14:51Like I say, it's not too late, Paul, to win major honours.
14:56But most boxers who go on to win world titles,
15:00they will have started much earlier than 28.
15:06That shook the legs a bit.
15:07There's that right hand over the top.
15:09We're talking, like, Paul.
15:11How's left hand?
15:12Just a little bit too low.
15:14Chin slightly in the air.
15:16And yes, he's caught him there.
15:17There he is again, look.
15:18So he's just got to be a little bit more active, hasn't he?
15:20Rather than, he's waited far too long.
15:26BELL RINGS
15:41Run your eye over these for us, Richie, would you please?
15:43Yeah, probably the best shot of the whole contest up to now, that right hand.
15:46And it's probably the first one that's really connected.
15:50Let's have a look here.
15:51Then he goes for one there.
15:52Look, it's a cracking shot, it really is.
15:55He's in, dips down, then whips that over the top.
15:59Tremendous.
16:04There's Moses Atoma there.
16:06Paul, what an exciting and great prospect he is.
16:13Modesty prevents him looking up and waving.
16:15When he gets to about 21 or 22, he'll know that's part of the job.
16:19Quiet lad as well.
16:21Awesome talent.
16:22Can he hit or not?
16:24We'll still wait to see if Hamilton can land a big shot tonight.
16:33Largely, Perry Howe in his comfort zone.
16:36Maybe expecting a harder night than he's getting at the moment.
16:54He's just waiting a little bit too long again, Hamilton.
16:57He's obviously been successful with that right hand earlier in the previous round,
17:01so he's got to get to work again and set that shot up.
17:05A few jabs to the body, the odd feint downstairs,
17:08and then just whip that right hand over.
17:10Howe keeps drifting around to the left, you see,
17:12so he's actually going to walk onto it if he doesn't change his movement.
17:16There he is there, not too far away.
17:18So for Howe, he has to start moving a little bit more to his right,
17:21away from that shot.
17:23As we spoke about all night,
17:25Hamilton busy with the jab to set that right hand over the top up.
17:31Also, I think Hamilton's got a decent left hook,
17:34so when he's there on the inside, why not finish on that shot also?
17:37Have we seen one tonight so far?
17:39We've seen a couple that have missed the target.
17:43There's just one wing,
17:44There's a couple that have missed the target.
17:47There's just one whipping around the side there.
17:55So there he is there, you see that right hand again.
17:58Howe's just drifting around onto that shot.
18:03Amy Pugh steps in.
18:08And I think, Paul, is this the first time, I think,
18:10Hamilton's gone past four rounds actually,
18:12so new territory for him.
18:43You talk about that angle, Jim, you know, Paul,
18:46I remember years ago, I did a lot of sparring with Harold Graham,
18:50you know, and God, he was a magician, he really was.
18:54Sparring him taught me so much, did Harold.
18:57And mainly with the feet also.
18:59He used to tread on me feet and...
19:01Oh, there he goes, that right hand!
19:02What am I talking about?
19:04Lands one.
19:06Howe took it well enough.
19:07Can Hamilton now follow up?
19:09The first big opening, first opportunity,
19:13first big breakthrough in this fight.
19:15This is meant to be a breakthrough night for Hamilton.
19:17He needs more of that.
19:20Goes again for the right hand.
19:22For the first time, Howe's starting to look a little disorganised.
19:30But Howe's got through it.
19:35Well, that was a good shot.
19:40Not at all, mate.
19:45Apologies for the language in the corner.
19:53Well, Robert Reilly in that corner, yeah, reading the right.
19:55There's that right hand over the top.
19:57Yeah, he's quite right.
19:58The hand's a little bit low.
20:00But it's a good little slip to the left, isn't it, from Hamilton.
20:03Then it's the perfect shot, then over the top.
20:05And just brought the hands down slightly of Howe.
20:08Just momentarily, and he's connected.
20:20So heading into the last round, Alan Smith sends Hamilton out
20:23with the words, change your pace, inject a bit of pace.
20:26Big breakthrough in the fifth round,
20:28but he could well do with sending everybody away,
20:32sending the message to all the viewers on TNT Sports
20:34from the last round, making that a positive
20:37because there's been a lot of negativity in this showing tonight.
20:41Yeah, not a good performance from him tonight, from Hamilton.
20:44But on to the sixth round now for the very first time.
20:49Just showed us in that last previous round
20:51of what he's capable of, that right hand over the top.
20:53There it is there.
20:54He's just got to concentrate a little bit,
20:56slip to the left and then whip that shot over the top.
20:59He's managed to land it cleanly twice, hasn't he,
21:02and Howe has got through it.
21:05And this is why you need more lead hand work, Paul.
21:08Like I say, just picking and poking all the time,
21:11and it just takes the opponent's focus off that right hand
21:15that's going to follow.
21:17When you're stalking and nothing's coming,
21:19then the opponent just senses that you're looking
21:22to set up that right hand over the top.
21:24And so that's why Howe's on that back foot, he's aware of it.
21:27That's why the lead hand needs to be, you know, much more...
21:32He must be working much more with that lead hand
21:35than to set that right hand over the top.
21:37Richie, is there another point about that,
21:39that if you are throwing and even if they're landing on the arms,
21:42you are going to tire the arms of the opponent out
21:44and maybe bring them down a bit?
21:46Bring them down and just make him lose focus
21:48and the attention to the right hand over the top that will follow.
21:51Just take his mind off it.
21:53Get his mind concentrating on that jab
21:55that keeps slamming into his arms or into his chest,
21:58anywhere, into the chin, into the chest, into the arms.
22:01Just throw the shot.
22:03But all the time, you're just teeing up
22:05and you're waiting then for the moment
22:07to land that right hand over the top.
22:12He'll learn from it. He'll learn from this.
22:14And when he'll look back, he knows that he should have thrown more jabs
22:17into his corner a little bit more.
22:19But the signs are there that, you know, he's got decent power.
22:22And that seems to be his favourite shot,
22:24that right hand over the top.
22:26He's just getting in the right position to throw it.
22:30He's nearly out of time to do it.
22:32Last minute of this six-rounder.
22:38A lot of hard work. Clearly in shape, Hamilton.
22:42But he's not delivering a performance commensurment
22:45with the preparation at the moment.
22:49Ooh!
22:54See again there, just trying to throw it.
22:56But how he's sensing that, that's why he's just leaning back.
23:00And then that target's even more difficult to connect with.
23:11Hamilton waiting and waiting.
23:13He's going to hear the clacker go in a second.
23:19He's pretty much out of time for the spectacular now, I'm afraid.
23:24It's been a grinding performance from William Hamilton,
23:27to say the best of it.
23:29Perry Howe, a very comfortable survivor.
23:31Howe will get work again very shortly.
23:34But the objective tonight was for this to be the launchpad
23:37for William Hamilton after a long, long wait for an opportunity.
23:40They don't come round every day, Richie, do they?
23:43No, they don't, and deep down you'd be disappointed.
23:46The only positive from that, he's got six rounds under his belt.
23:50But it wasn't a good performance, really, and he's waited far too long.
23:53And he's just trying to set up that perfect punch,
23:55but he's just waiting.
23:56He's won the contest, he's won almost every round,
23:58but deep down he won't be too pleased with that, I wouldn't have thought.
24:02And Alan Smith, you know, it's back to the drawing board
24:05and lots to work on.
24:07He has got decent power, this fella's done his job.
24:10The journeyman sort of star performance, keeping out the way
24:13and containing what's in front of him.
24:15But for William Hamilton, yeah, he'll have to improve.
24:17But after six rounds, Paul, that's probably a positive for him
24:20that he's got six rounds under his belt.
24:24Ladies and gentlemen, after six rounds of boxing,
24:29your scoring referee, Mark Bates, scores the contest 60-54
24:34to your winner, and still undefeated,
24:39William, the future Hamilton!
