00:00Welcome back everyone is Charlie HBO recently released a totally alternate ending to house
00:11the dragon season 2 and we've also learned what their alternate plan was back when there
00:15were still 10 episodes in the season.
00:18That's right there were originally supposed to be 10 episodes.
00:21We found out what was supposed to happen in those two extra episodes the got cut.
00:25So will break it all down.
00:26One of the big complaints of the season is that episode 8 finale that we actually got
00:30felt a lot like episode 8 of a 10 episode season like how did you feel about the actual
00:35finale.
00:36Well it felt like episode 8 of a 10 episode season in the real complaint is that they
00:40cut the actual finale which would have been a much more satisfying payoff to the end of
00:45the season paying off all the things they've been setting up all season long house the
00:49dragon in the original game of thrones series have typically been famous for having really
00:53crazy episode nines and then relatively chill episode 10s.
00:58So if you're brand-new to the channel be sure to subscribe to get all the episodes and big
01:01reminder that night of the seven kingdoms season one episodes will be the next thing
01:06that we get next year is supposed to air around the same time.
01:08I think that house the dragon season 2 aired this year.
01:12I've already got a much longer in-depth trailer video for that.
01:15So I'll link it at the end of this and down the description below the release their first
01:18trailer for that just as house the dragon season 2 is ending to remind people like oh
01:22yeah we do have new game of thrones stuff coming next year, but the real big stuff you
01:26may actually seen this totally alternate ending to season 2 episode 8 in the final version
01:30that we saw on screen one of the ending montages shows each of the different armies marching
01:36on each other at Harrenhal Jason Lannister's army and his lions coming from the Westerlands
01:41arriving at the Riverlands the Hightower army with Tessarion and Daeron finally joining
01:45the fight coming from the South Aemond also ordered them and Kristen Cole's army coming
01:50from the crown lands to converge on Harrenhal Aemond himself was about to head to Harrenhal
01:55with Vhagar expecting to find Daemon Caraxes his army of Rivermen with the Stark army marching
02:00from the north across the twins.
02:02Thanks to Jason's diplomacy earlier this season coming to help Daemon's forces which were
02:07already really large like it was meant to be a really big force.
02:10I think he had over 30,000 people there at Harrenhal already, but in this alternate version
02:15of that ending HBO recently released.
02:17You can actually see in this scene the Stark Greybeards marching over the twins Craig and
02:21Stark very clearly marching at the head of the army and this isn't like a CG situation.
02:26They actually film the Craig and Stark actor walking over the twins with his army like
02:32wait a minute why they Photoshop him out of that ending like if they filmed Craig and
02:35Stark why they withholding him to season three.
02:38I think part of the reason gets into what happened with those missing two episodes episode
02:43nine and episode 10 the writers had originally planned for the season like their original
02:47planned ending the been a lot of fans doing very detailed timelines on when house the
02:52dragon season two went from 10 episodes to 8 episodes like what happened when it happened
02:57essentially what went down is that in late 2022 HBO renewed the show for season two Ryan
03:03Condal and the writers finish writing all the episodes by early 2023 season two started
03:08filming in April 2023, but right before that happened.
03:12He reported that they had scripts for 10 episodes finished ready to shoot scripts change a lot
03:18while they're actually shooting episodes, but they had finished what they needed to
03:21actually start filming then just weeks before season two started filming episodes Warner
03:26Brothers not HBO so like the parent company here that owns HBO Warner Brothers reportedly
03:32ordered house the dragon to cut those last two episodes nine and 10 leaving only the
03:37eight episodes that we saw on screen remember this is like right before they started filming
03:41like weeks before they started filming forcing the writers to scramble at the last minute
03:46with weeks to go before shooting to replot the 10 episode season to 8 episodes like condense
03:52all that plot eight episodes because if they hadn't change anything and just don't the
03:56things the way they had planned through episode eight episode it would've ended without any
04:00kind of cliffhanger it would've been even weirder than the ending that we did actually
04:04get that cut in the number of episodes in the timing of when they started filming the
04:08season coincided with one of the longest writer strikes in history.
04:14Meaning that none of the writers on the show could actually go to set while they were filming
04:17and fix issues with the episodes as they were being filmed typically during seasons writers
04:22will fix any issues that come up in the script as they film episodes.
04:26This happens on all shows all the time like it's not just house the dragon it happened
04:30on game of thrones all the time.
04:31It happens on every show at some point, but during writer strikes that's against the rules.
04:37So nobody can actually fix the scripts they have to leave it to the actors on set the
04:41directors to fix stuff which can be disastrous sometimes now you're asking what was actually
04:46in that original plan for 10 episodes the season what happened to those missing two
04:51episodes that would've made the season feel so much better.
04:54It sounds like in their original plan actually had a really solid season in a lot of the
04:58dissatisfaction that everybody's complaining about comes from the fact that they cut so
05:02much stuff out based on what Ryan Condal in the writers said before the season started
05:07it was primarily the battle of the gullet in the fall of King's landing like to really
05:12major WTF events in the dance the dragons right before the season started he been hyping
05:17up the battle of the gullet, but then after they cut the last two episodes and been filming
05:21for a while his comments in the battle of the gullet changed he started talking about
05:25how they had reallocated the story they wanted to tell based on the resources they had available
05:30in the time they had in the current episodes in season two, which is a very diplomatic
05:35way of saying that we don't have enough time or money to actually do a good version the
05:39battle of the gullet now basically confirming the reason why they cut those two episodes
05:43is because Warner brothers cut their budget big time typically it takes house the dragon
05:49about $20 million per episode, but for big battle episodes that number can go way bigger
05:54typically in the past like the original game of thrones seasons even house the dragon season
05:58one HBO was always happy to open their purse and let them spend whatever they needed to
06:03make a really good season.
06:05Remember how I said that the episode eight that we got felt a lot like episode eight
06:09of a 10 episode season with the way it ended with all the armies marching towards each
06:12other in the setup for the fall of King's landing like what it feels like it's setting
06:15up a lot of stuff, but not a lot of payoffs.
06:18That's because episode eight was meant to be set up for episode nine, which is typically
06:22been the major WTF battle episode or some WTF tragic event in the season like the major
06:27event of the season that typically the case has been in the past.
06:31Episode 10 still major things happen big payoffs wrapping up the season, but not nearly as
06:36big as what happened during episode nine probably the best example that is game of thrones season
06:40six with like the battle the bastards happening, but then like an episode 10 the actual finale
06:45you have the destruction of the sept which wasn't quite as big as the battle of bastards,
06:49but was still a really big WTF event.
06:51So it sounds like house the dragon season two episode nine would have been the battle
06:55of the gullet with the triarchy's fleet arriving to fight Corlys Valerian's blockade in episode
07:0010 would have been Rhaenyra paying off that conversation with Allison where she betrayed
07:05Aemon in the greens telling Rhaenyra when to strike King's landing time for when he'd
07:08be gone at Harrenhal with Vhagar and this would have also paid off Damon's weirwood
07:13vision seeing Rhaenyra wearing her crown sitting on the iron throne.
07:17We would have actually seen a version of that in the season to fin out like the ending
07:21shot and it would have been a parallel for the season one episode one shot of young Rhaenyra
07:26standing in front of the iron throne.
07:28There are a couple of Damon's weirwood visions where he saw versions of her on the iron throne
07:33wearing her crown young and old, but the last vision was meant to set up the original version
07:37of the season two finale doesn't that ending for season two sound like a way bigger payoff
07:42like a way better season in general with both the battle the gullet in the fall of King's
07:46landing that would've been a banger season and paid off all the time we spent with Damon
07:51having those trippy weirwood visions at Harrenhal.
07:54So next big question you all have why did Warner Brothers of all people not HBO but
07:58Warner Brothers the parent company cut those last two episodes at the very last minute
08:02without warning when HBO and the writers did not want to cut them HBO sounds like they
08:07make 14 episodes a season if they could currently the best report we have is that this has more
08:13to do with David Zaslav's curtain marching orders to all the divisions of Warner Brothers
08:18to cut costs big time and recently if you haven't been reading the news Warner Brothers
08:23has had very very bad financial problems like at the very very top levels.
08:29It's been an ongoing thing for them the last couple of years with the disastrous rounds
08:33of multiple buyouts like it's been multiple different crazy things happening at the corporate
08:38level it sounds like things got so bad at that level that they now started to spill
08:42over and affect more quality productions like house the dragon and other HBO stuff
08:46which normally you think they would double down on like if it's doing so well for them
08:50it's probably the most popular things that they make why wouldn't they make more of it.
08:54So now the big follow-up question you're all asking does this mean house the dragon season
08:58three will also be eight episodes will the final season four also be eight episodes.
09:04This is me quoting what Ryan Condal the showrunner said about that when people directly asked
09:08him like does this mean the season three will be eight episodes like season two and he said
09:12I haven't discussed with HBO about it.
09:15I would just anticipate the cadence of the show from a dramatic storytelling perspective
09:20will continue to be the same from season two on which to me sounds like a very diplomatic
09:25way of him saying that yeah, it's only gonna have eight episodes in season three and season
09:29four keep in mind none of the writers want this none of the people that actually make
09:33the show want this.
09:34This is like a corporate thing from Warner Brothers not even HBO wants this.
09:38It's always possible we go back to 10 episodes per season, but I'm not gonna hold my breath
09:42with all the problems Warner Brothers larger parent company is happening right now.
09:46So what this probably means for house the dragon season three is the season three episode
09:50one episode to begin with the battle of the gullet like they pushed it to season three
09:55so they can spend the money they actually need to on it because HBO Warner Brothers
09:59wouldn't given the money to do it during season two.
10:02If you haven't read the books.
10:03The reason why people are so hyped up about the battle of the gullet is because it's known
10:07as the bloodiest sea battle in the history of Westeros.
10:11It involves the triarchy's fleet coming to fight Corlys Valerian's fleet break their
10:15blockade but also involves a lot of other key players to and dragons like because we
10:20have the dragon seas now.
10:21So the dragons do start joining the different wars across Westeros for those you wondering
10:26why Jace hasn't joined any of the fights that's actually been a running thing with him this
10:29season like he's been pissed off that Rhaenyra keeps passing him over not letting him go
10:33out on his dragon vermax and actually fight the battle of the gullet is the change that
10:37like he finally gets to join the fight.
10:39There couple moments during season two.
10:41I won't point them out to specifically because I think they give away some spoilers.
10:45But there were couple moments in season two.
10:47If you know you know the sort of foreshadow how his story ends in the books.
10:51The funny thing about that in Ryan Condal the showrunner sort of tease this during his
10:55final interview for the actual finale, but people were asking all kinds of questions.
11:00This always been the question as to how much the books are going to spoil what happens
11:04on the show.
11:05Like how much are they going to change things for the show so that plays out differently
11:08Ryan Condal said that Helene's conversation with Aemon like their final conversation the
11:12balcony there is really critical to this idea going forward on the show and how it sounds
11:17like they're going to be changing things a lot.
11:19There's a scene during that where she essentially tells him his future like this is how you're
11:23going to die.
11:24You're going to die at the gods I you'll be gone.
11:26You will be able to do anything and she tells him that Aegon will eventually see victory
11:29eventually he'll set the iron throne again, but he'll also sit on a wooden throne.
11:34So when people ask Ryan Condal like why would you have a scene where Helene literally
11:38spoils the story like why would you want to spoil the story that way and he had this evil
11:43glint in his eye because of what Helene said after this because Aemon's response to that
11:48like when she told him his future that he would die.
11:50He said I could have you killed for that and then she says it wouldn't change anything
11:56Ryan Condal reportedly got a really evil glint in his eye and that was meant to be a key
12:00that they're actually going to change the story like Aemon knowing his future will take
12:05different actions and it will lead to a slightly different version the outcome which I think
12:09is the show's way of getting around big potential book spoilers.
12:13So even though we're all expecting this big Daemon versus Aemon fight they been hyping
12:17up all season at the gods I with their dragons.
12:20It sounds like the way the show pays this off is going to be differently from the books
12:25there were a lot of you asking this season if Sunfire is really dead because Aegon during
12:30episode eight that my dragon is dead like it seems like he confirmed it that would also
12:34potentially change Rhaenyra's story without getting too far deep into that because could
12:39potentially turn into spoilers.
12:40But it sounds like Ryan Condal is also saying that the way Rhaenyra's story plays out will
12:45also be different from the books.
12:47So if you are worried about potential book spoilers that's actually really good news
12:50for you.
12:51It sounds like it's gonna play out very differently, but everyone post all your predictions in
12:55the comments below if they will change a lot of those really major events now based on
12:59what it sounds like the showrunner and the writers are saying how do you think that it
13:03will play out differently dispose to start filming season three by early next year.
13:07So we'll probably hear more about what their actual plan is for plotting the rest the dance
13:11the dragons out whenever they wind up releasing of course I will do videos about it and will
13:15probably get some more official trailers for game of thrones night of the seven kingdoms
13:19later this year to so of course I'll be doing full episode videos for that just like all
13:23the other game of thrones series everybody click here for my bigger trailer video for
13:27that and click here for my other house the dragon season three video thank you so much
13:32for watching and I'll see you guys the next one!
