PM: Youth must have courage to speak up
Speaking at the International Young Future Leaders Summit 2024 in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (Aug 16) night, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the younger generation must have the courage to speak out on various issues such as humanity, corruption, poverty gaps and environmental degradation guided by strong principles and values.

00:00So, my sons and daughters, let me begin by reminding you and reiterating a fact that
00:22you are familiar with.
00:25I'm talking about love, a subject which is very important to the young and oftentimes
00:31even to the old.
00:33William Wordsworth, famous English poet in the Romantic period, explained about the beauty,
00:43the passion that will not remain, that will be lost in the pace of time.
00:52Learn, have the patience, have the tenacity of purpose, have the conviction that things
01:00must change through your understanding and your love for justice and your principled
01:09stance in life.
01:11But though the radiance, which was once so bright, be forever taken from my sight, gone
01:22forever, so remind you to come back, to utilize that time where the radiance remain bright.
01:35You are still youthful, full of energy, for love of scholarship, idealism, which sometimes
01:45will not be there, the stigma among the young, among the old generation, older generation.
01:52But there happens to be one of the poems that I wrote to Aziza before we got married.
01:57No, I'm serious, it's true, you can ask her.
02:03That's why she could not avoid but to fall in love.
02:07What is important in this context, which I address to my sons and daughters, is that
02:14to utilize this time, because in many countries, even in Malaysia, sometimes our leaders fail.
02:25You give them the mandate, all the powers necessary, and oftentimes it was used to enrich
02:32themselves, their children, and their cronies, rampant corruption, moral degradation.
02:40The youth must stand and speak up and champion the cause of humanity, the sufferings of our
02:48people, the marginalized, the poor, our problem, our concern, the destruction of the environment,
02:59the corruption in our midst, are our concern, and we must stand up and speak.
03:07That's why I emphasized in the beginning the need to understand and learn, and not to become
03:18mere lackeys or agents by any particular group.
03:24You must have this understanding.
03:26Our society requires energetic youth with ideas, with ideals and principles, who believe
03:37in freedom, who believe in justice, who believe in humanity.
03:42So this is my message to iFuture 2024, have that belief and conviction.
03:50We want a better Malaysia, we want a better Southeast Asia, we want a better ASEAN, and
03:59Asia, and the world.
04:03And who will determine the future is you, my sons and daughters.
