More than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, the territory’s Health Ministry said Thursday.

Israel’s offensive has also wounded 92,401 people and displaced over 85% of the population from their homes, the ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said. It does not distinguish between civilians and militants in its toll.

00:00Today marks a grim milestone for the world.
00:03The people of Gaza are now grieving 40,000 Palestinian lives lost,
00:08according to Gaza's health ministry.
00:11Most of the dead are women and children.
00:14This unimaginable situation is overwhelmingly due to recurring failures
00:20by the Israeli defense forces to comply with the rules of war.
00:24On average, about 130 people have been killed every day in Gaza
00:29over the past 10 months.
00:31The scale of the Israeli military's destruction of homes, hospitals,
00:35schools and places of worship is deeply shocking.
00:39International humanitarian law is very clear on the paramount importance
00:45on the protection of civilians and civilian property and infrastructure.
00:50Our office has documented serious violations
00:53of international humanitarian law by both the Israeli military
00:58and Palestinian armed groups, including the armed wing of Hamas.
01:02As the world reflects on and considers its inability to prevent this carnage,
01:08I urge all parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire,
01:13to lay down their arms and stop the killing once and for all.
01:19The hostages must be released.
01:21Palestinians arbitrarily detained must be freed.
01:25Israel's illegal occupation must end.
01:28And the internationally agreed two-state solution must become a reality.
