Dr Ishwar Gilada gave important information about the symptoms and severity of monkeypox

Mpox can cause fever, rashes, lymph node enlargement and some people can get systemic infections. There is an extremely remote possibility of spread through droplets or surfaces. India's strength in vaccine production should be positively exploited, said Dr Ishwar Gilada, an infectious disease expert

00:00The World Health Organization has declared mPox as a public health emergency of international
00:06concern.
00:07This has happened after 160% increase in just six months in DRC Congo, Democratic Republic
00:14of Congo, in monkeypox cases.
00:17And currently they are seeing a new variant which is called clade 1b.
00:21Clade 1 has been prevalent in DRC Congo and clade 2 was in Western Africa.
00:28The first time this emergency was declared in July 2022, but in May 23 they declared
00:34that there is no more emergency after the monkeypox cases started declining.
00:40We objected to it being called monkeypox because it is no more spread through monkeys, it is
00:44spread through dormice, it is spread through squirrels and it creates a lot of stigma and
00:49discrimination because it is mainly a sexually transmitted infection and people would think
00:54that it is spreading from monkeys to human beings.
00:57It is a zoonotic infection coming from animal initially to human being and then human being
01:02to human being.
01:03Now more than 99% cases are in men having sex with men and therefore we demanded in
01:09July 22 itself that it should be called STI, sexually transmitted infection.
01:16There can be fever, there will be kind of rashes, there will be lymph node enlargement
01:22and then after some people can get systemic infection.
01:25But fortunately it is not spread through fomites, it is not spread through droplet
01:30infection and therefore it cannot be very serious infection as much as COVID or other
01:35infections.
01:36There is no perfect treatment to this, Ticovirimat is used to treat and there are vaccines which
01:42are basically derived from smallpox vaccine, one is called Jonas and other is called Nordic
01:49vaccine.
01:51So these two vaccines are being used and they are being given emergency use authorization
01:56or emergency use listing and that can control monkeypox or mpox.
02:01So rather than calling monkeypox, now we call it menpox or monkey mpox.
