00:00:00Hey, break it up! Break it up, you two! Come on!
00:00:13This is it, Dylan. You're lucky I don't have you taken out of here in handcuffs.
00:00:19Come in.
00:00:24Step up, Steve.
00:00:25See?
00:00:29What happened this time?
00:00:30Nothing.
00:00:31Nothing? Jason's mother just called me from the emergency room.
00:00:34He swung at me first!
00:00:35I don't care!
00:00:37Dylan, according to this file, you've been in three fights since January, you've been in detention five times a month.
00:00:42This is worse than any other kid in this entire school.
00:00:45And as such, you give me no choice. I have to expel him, Miss Statler.
00:00:49It was a fight that I didn't even start!
00:00:51It's not about today's fight, Dylan. It's about what you've been doing all year long.
00:00:57Why don't you go out in the hallway and have a seat. Let me speak to your mother in private.
00:01:02Why'd he get in so many fights?
00:01:11Miss Stat, on this fight, it's just the icing on the cake. There's a pattern of violence here.
00:01:15His fights, his disrespect towards his teachers, his inability to show up for more than half of his classes at all.
00:01:20And it's getting worse.
00:01:50I'm sorry.
00:02:08Can I get you something, handsome?
00:02:09Morning.
00:02:11You gonna just keep staring at that newspaper, or you gonna give a girl a look?
00:02:17Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.
00:02:24Colonel Cahill, are you blushing?
00:02:27What? Oh, come on. That's crazy talk.
00:02:30All right.
00:02:32Well, you wanna try something special today for breakfast?
00:02:35I would, uh, just like my usual, Kay, if you don't mind. Thanks anyway.
00:02:40Well, it was worth a try, so let's see that scrambled eggs and bacon and fill up this miserable thermos.
00:02:46I like it. It's got character.
00:02:48It's got salmonella. See you right back.
00:03:02You're 16, Dylan. This mad-at-the-world routine is getting old.
00:03:06And getting kicked out of school, that just tops it off.
00:03:09Whatever. The way I see it, my summer's just starting early.
00:03:12Oh, dream on. Your summer ends today.
00:03:16Dylan, ever since your father left, you've been nothing but a nightmare. Why is that?
00:03:21Oh, don't be so dramatic, Mom. I was nine when Dad left.
00:03:24I didn't become a nightmare until a couple of years ago.
00:03:27He was the smart one. He escaped.
00:03:29You don't know what you're talking about, kiddo.
00:03:31Either way, Dad wasn't happy, and you made him leave.
00:03:40Dylan.
00:03:47How many you want?
00:03:48All right, all right, all right.
00:03:50Go, go, go.
00:03:51Who wants banana cream?
00:03:52Good Lord, I do.
00:03:53Well, I do, but we're playing cards here, right?
00:03:55It's pie, dummy. I'm out.
00:03:58How many you want, man?
00:03:59Can you get that, Bart?
00:04:00All right, I'll hold.
00:04:01Two.
00:04:06Hello?
00:04:07Hi, Dad.
00:04:08Who's this?
00:04:09It's Veronica, your daughter.
00:04:11Veronica?
00:04:14How'd you know I was here?
00:04:15You're always at the VFW.
00:04:18So, how are you, honey? Is everything okay?
00:04:20It's Dylan.
00:04:21Dylan? What happened to him?
00:04:25Well, he got into a fight today at school, and...
00:04:31I just think he needs a little attention.
00:04:33You know, from a positive male role model.
00:04:38I was actually thinking he could come out and stay with you...
00:04:42for the summer.
00:04:45We're out of options, Dad.
00:04:49He needs some tough love. He might not graduate.
00:04:52I...
00:04:55I guess it wouldn't hurt the boy to spend the summer in Greensville.
00:05:02Don't thank me yet.
00:05:05All right, then.
00:05:07Good night, Dad.
00:05:08Good night, honey.
00:05:17What do you want, man?
00:05:24You all right, Colonel?
00:05:25You look kind of peaky.
00:05:26I don't know what that means, but what's the matter, Colonel?
00:05:28Veronica would like Dylan to spend the summer with me in Greensville.
00:05:34As in your grandson, Dylan?
00:05:36What does she want you to do, shape him up or something?
00:05:38Make a man out of him?
00:05:39Well, what are you going to do with him, Colonel?
00:05:41I don't know.
00:05:50Where have you been?
00:05:51Nowhere.
00:05:52Don't give me that. I asked you a question.
00:05:54Give me a break, Mom. You're totally overreacting.
00:05:56I don't think I'm overreacting at all.
00:05:59You just put a boy in the hospital. I think I'm taking it pretty well.
00:06:05I talked to your grandfather tonight.
00:06:07And how's the Colonel?
00:06:08You're spending the summer with him.
00:06:10I'm what?
00:06:11You're spending the summer in Greensville.
00:06:13There's no way I'm spending the summer in the sticks.
00:06:15Much less with him.
00:06:16Oh, yes, you are.
00:06:35I make a mistake
00:06:39I forget that
00:06:42I'm coming your way
00:06:46You push some older people around
00:06:49The window up, snow on the ground
00:06:52Chance awaits, so get over fast
00:06:55Cause you're afraid
00:06:59Figure it out somehow
00:07:05Oh, figure it out somehow
00:07:23Greenville.
00:07:25Dylan.
00:07:26Over here.
00:07:29Reporting for duty, Colonel.
00:07:32What's that?
00:07:33Shake like a man.
00:07:38You must have grown two feet since I last saw you.
00:07:41Here, stand next to me.
00:07:44You got some meat on your bones finally, too, huh?
00:07:47Come on. I gotta make a pit stop.
00:07:57Come on.
00:08:04Hey, Mac.
00:08:06Hey, Colonel, right on time. I just switched out the tap.
00:08:09Nice.
00:08:11This is Dylan.
00:08:12Veronica, sir.
00:08:13Nice to meet you, Dylan. What are you drinking?
00:08:15Beer.
00:08:16Dream on.
00:08:17Coke's fine.
00:08:18All right, one Coke coming up.
00:08:20Here you are.
00:08:22What do you say?
00:08:24Thanks.
00:08:25You're welcome.
00:08:26Come on, knucklehead.
00:08:27Let me introduce you to the rest of the knuckleheads.
00:08:30What are you playing?
00:08:32Lock, card, stud.
00:08:34Must be Dylan.
00:08:36I'm Johnny.
00:08:37Hey.
00:08:38Hey. You don't look like a hardened criminal.
00:08:40I'm Chick. Welcome aboard.
00:08:43Knucklehead.
00:08:44Right here.
00:08:47San Diego, give me three points.
00:08:49Make it two.
00:08:50Done.
00:08:52Yo, New York. You play poker?
00:08:54You bet.
00:08:55Have a seat.
00:08:57Not tonight.
00:09:00Rain check?
00:09:01Got it.
00:09:02You making a bet?
00:09:03No, I'm making a contribution.
00:09:05Children's fun.
00:09:06Come on.
00:09:08Let's go.
00:09:16Yeah, come on in.
00:09:19Up at the top of the stairs.
00:09:22You don't smoke, do you?
00:09:24No.
00:09:25Better not catch you doing it.
00:09:27I'm putting you in your mother's room.
00:09:29Don't let the frills bother you.
00:09:32You'll bunk in here for the summer.
00:09:36Why don't you slap your backpack down on the bed for now?
00:09:43Now, we may as well get this out of the way right now.
00:09:45I've got a few rules for you to follow.
00:09:48Rule one.
00:09:49Be on time.
00:09:51Rule two.
00:09:52Do what's right.
00:09:54Rule three.
00:09:55Treat everyone with respect.
00:09:57Now, you follow those three rules, we won't have any problems here.
00:10:02Now, unless there are some questions, and I'm sure there won't be,
00:10:06I think you probably should call your mother.
00:10:09I will.
00:10:11All right, then.
00:10:13Good night.
00:10:14You going to bed?
00:10:15It's eight o'clock.
00:10:16Yeah, well, I usually read at least until eight-thirty.
00:10:21Sometimes I even make it to nine.
00:10:25Good night.
00:10:27Good night.
00:10:48Hello?
00:10:49Dad?
00:10:50Hey, sweetie.
00:10:51How's my girl?
00:10:52I'm fine, but I haven't heard from Dylan yet. Is everything okay?
00:10:55He called you.
00:10:56He's fine.
00:10:58Dad?
00:10:59I know how angry he must be right now.
00:11:02I'll make sure he calls you tomorrow.
00:11:04Well, good night, Dad.
00:11:06Good night, honey.
00:11:07Thanks for calling.
00:11:14Hey, love.
00:11:25Dad?
00:11:43We have work to do. Get dressed.
00:11:46We're burning daylight.
00:11:47Okay, okay, I'm up.
00:11:50I'll be in the kitchen.
00:11:51You'll be down in fifteen minutes.
00:11:56Ah!
00:11:59Work is important.
00:12:01It gives a man self-respect and a reason to be alive.
00:12:06If a man is useful to others, then he really feels good about himself.
00:12:11And he's really lucky if he finds something that he's good at and...
00:12:19You really type messages into that thing?
00:12:22Huh?
00:12:23You don't talk?
00:12:24Nobody talks anymore. Everybody texts.
00:12:27Well, with that little keyboard, how do you do that with your big fingers?
00:12:31You use your fingernails.
00:12:33Did I say it?
00:12:35Money is with you.
00:12:40You know, it's amazing.
00:12:43It's just so incredible.
00:12:46The things that they come up with these days that...
00:12:50Oh, windmill!
00:12:52Oh, gosh!
00:12:56I'm sorry.
00:12:59I'll buy you another one someday.
00:13:04Come on! Come on!
00:13:11This is one of my jobs.
00:13:13Every time I do it, it gives me a great feeling.
00:13:19There, hold this.
00:13:23Whoa! Whoa! What are you doing?
00:13:26I'm pulling the flag.
00:13:28It almost hit the ground. A flag must never touch the ground, understood?
00:13:32All right.
00:13:33Good.
00:13:34Come on.
00:13:42Hold still. Hold it. Keep it up.
00:13:47I'm gonna learn respect somewhere along the way.
00:13:50Raise her up.
00:13:52Raise her up.
00:14:17Then, ah!
00:14:19What's that?
00:14:22When you raise the flag, you always salute it.
00:14:28And stand at attention like that salute meant something.
00:14:31Say, get back!
00:14:35That's it.
00:14:36Good.
00:14:38Let's go.
00:14:43I work here, too.
00:14:45Well, I don't really work. I volunteer here.
00:14:48I volunteered you, too.
00:14:50What?
00:14:51Well, yeah, we package up the books and the clothes for the church rummage sale.
00:14:57I want you to meet this guy.
00:14:59He'll show you the ropes.
00:15:02Cory?
00:15:03Oh, hey, Colonel.
00:15:05He's up.
00:15:06Cory, this is my grandson, Dylan.
00:15:09Dylan, this is Cory Miller.
00:15:10Heard a lot about you.
00:15:12He'll be staying the summer with me.
00:15:14Cool.
00:15:15Now, listen up, guys.
00:15:16This Saturday is our rummage sale day.
00:15:19We've got a whole bunch of boxes of clothes in.
00:15:22We've got to sort them out.
00:15:24Take you about four hours.
00:15:26I'll be over at the VFW taking care of a few things there.
00:15:30Cory, lock up.
00:15:31Dylan, when you finish here, go straight home.
00:15:35Clear? Clear?
00:15:37Yes.
00:15:38Take care.
00:15:39So, ah, come on. I'll show you where the boxes are.
00:15:45Ah, pants go here, shirts go over there.
00:15:49Forget this.
00:15:51No, come on. It's not as bad as it seems.
00:15:54We'll put on some tunes, and if we have sodas in the break room.
00:15:58You live in New York City, right?
00:16:01Yeah.
00:16:02Do you like it there?
00:16:03Better than here, dude.
00:16:05A whole lot better than here.
00:16:09Ah, at last.
00:16:10Give me a hand.
00:16:13There it is.
00:16:14Boy.
00:16:15All right, did you get those boxes sorted?
00:16:17Yeah.
00:16:18Good. Now, before you get too comfortable, I've got some work that needs to be done.
00:16:22I just got done working.
00:16:23Yeah, I know. I want the newspapers bundled in the lawn mowed.
00:16:28But it's going to be dark.
00:16:29Not if you work fast. Let's go. It's getting late.
00:16:32I'm so over this.
00:16:33I know. I know.
00:16:49Fuck.
00:16:52Fuck.
00:17:19Fuck.
00:17:28Hold it right there, Huck Finn.
00:17:31Get back inside.
00:17:34This is so stupid.
00:17:35What is?
00:17:36Me being here.
00:17:37It's just another one of my mom's dumb ideas.
00:17:39Let's get one thing straight.
00:17:41This is not one of your mom's dumb ideas.
00:17:43This is your last resort.
00:17:45One way or another, you're here to get your act together.
00:17:48Whatever.
00:17:50I'm not done talking to you. Get back here.
00:17:53Don't ever walk away while I'm talking to you. You got that?
00:17:56Yeah.
00:17:57What?
00:17:58Yeah.
00:17:59All right, go back to bed.
00:18:00And call your mother.
00:18:01It's late.
00:18:02I don't care. She's worried about you.
00:18:16Hello?
00:18:17Yeah, Mom. It's me.
00:18:19Oh, hey, honey. How are you doing?
00:18:21I hate it here.
00:18:23How are you two getting along?
00:18:25How do you think? He treats me like a slave.
00:18:28Well, his bark is bigger than his bite. You'll be fine.
00:18:31If I promise to be good, can I come home?
00:18:34No, you can't.
00:18:36You can't?
00:18:37No.
00:18:38No.
00:18:39No.
00:18:40No.
00:18:41No.
00:18:42No.
00:18:43No.
00:18:44You can't.
00:18:45This is going to be good for you. Trust me.
00:18:47Whatever. I'm going to bed.
00:18:49Okay, honey. I love you.
00:19:02No gourmet coffee houses around here.
00:19:07Good morning, gentlemen.
00:19:09Okay.
00:19:10This is my grandson, Dylan.
00:19:12Well, Dylan.
00:19:14I see the resemblance.
00:19:16You're as good looking as your grandpa.
00:19:19Can I get you something to eat, Dylan?
00:19:21I'll take an omelet.
00:19:22Want some orange juice to go with it?
00:19:23Can I get some coffee?
00:19:24Of course you can.
00:19:28Right here.
00:19:30I'm not even going to ask you.
00:19:33Oh, mustn't forget the thermos, sweetie.
00:19:38Sweetie?
00:19:40Be quiet. I don't want to hear it.
00:19:50Well, you could have broken your leg when you jumped off that roof last night.
00:19:54I was fine.
00:19:55You did it in good time, though.
00:19:57Yeah.
00:19:58Yeah, Mom took longer than that when she used to do it.
00:20:05Where were you headed?
00:20:07Nowhere but here.
00:20:10Wow.
00:20:13You want to go?
00:20:16Go.
00:20:17But ask yourself this before you go.
00:20:21What the heck is it I'm going back to?
00:20:34Okay, guys, break's over.
00:20:36Make sure the canned goods for the food drive are boxed up.
00:20:39Roger, Colonel.
00:20:40Jenny, this is my grandson, Dylan.
00:20:43Hi.
00:20:47It's nice to meet you, Dylan.
00:20:48Yeah.
00:20:50Jenny, I want you to get the children's clothes boxed up so I can get them over to Father Martin at the orphanage.
00:20:56Roger.
00:20:57Good.
00:21:01Okay, Dylan, let's go.
00:21:03Dylan!
00:21:04Huh?
00:21:05Let's go.
00:21:14Oh, what a mess.
00:21:17Sure would be nice to have our July 4th picnic here.
00:21:20So, here's what I want you to do.
00:21:22I want you to clean all this mess out of here and fix up that fence.
00:21:26Corey will show you where the tools are.
00:21:28And when you're done, you're going to be so proud of what you finished.
00:21:32You watch.
00:21:34Yeah, right.
00:22:05Hey, mister, fix it.
00:22:07Looks like you used brake.
00:22:19You're doing a really good job.
00:22:21Looks great.
00:22:23I didn't know you were so handy.
00:22:24Me neither.
00:22:25Did your dad teach you how to do that?
00:22:27Nah, my old man's a ghost.
00:22:29Oh, I'm sorry.
00:22:31Nah, he ain't dead.
00:22:32He's just out of the picture.
00:22:34Oh, you always have the colonel.
00:22:36Don't remind me.
00:22:37What, you guys don't get along?
00:22:38Sure, only the convict gets along with the warden.
00:22:44You know, I've always wanted to see New York.
00:22:46Central Park, Times Square.
00:22:50That must be so exciting.
00:22:52It's been plenty exciting for me lately.
00:22:54Yeah, I heard you got into some trouble.
00:22:57You could say that.
00:22:59Fighting, getting kicked out of school.
00:23:03You don't seem like that kind of guy.
00:23:08It's hard to explain.
00:23:10Maybe it's just the way things are back there.
00:23:12You get into a situation and people expect certain things.
00:23:16You don't want to look like a fool.
00:23:19And you get trapped.
00:23:21Yeah, I guess that's what it is.
00:23:23I can understand that.
00:23:27Want to know something funny?
00:23:29My parents warned me about you.
00:23:31Don't worry, they do it with every guy.
00:23:34They heard the colonel's juvenile delinquent grandson was coming into town.
00:23:38And that spells trouble.
00:23:39With a capital T.
00:23:44How about you?
00:23:45You like it here?
00:23:47Yeah, I like it here.
00:23:50How about you?
00:23:52You like it here?
00:23:54I love it.
00:23:56But that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see, well, New York City, for instance.
00:24:04Well, if you ever make it there, I'd love to show you around.
00:24:09That'd be nice.
00:24:15So how's the little hooligan doing?
00:24:17Kids these days, they're just so different.
00:24:22Tell me about it.
00:24:23His dad leaving put him behind the eight ball.
00:24:26No crucified a boy for his father's mistakes.
00:24:28He's just a kid, and he needs your help.
00:24:31You led men into battle.
00:24:32What's the matter, you can't handle a teenager with a chip on his shoulder?
00:24:35That was different.
00:24:37And this chip is a very large chip.
00:24:39I know how it is.
00:24:41Kids practically begging you for help.
00:24:44You're a colonel.
00:24:46Leave.
00:25:08There you go, Brooks.
00:25:11Hey, Tim, no, please don't do this.
00:25:17I need that, I need it.
00:25:22There's your change.
00:25:25Hi, Deputy.
00:25:27Please, I need that.
00:25:29Yeah, right, Corey. It's not happening today.
00:25:32Hey!
00:25:33Yep, back at you.
00:25:35Give him his helmet back.
00:25:37This helmet?
00:25:42There's the helmet.
00:25:44Now why don't you just stay out of it?
00:25:52All right, that's it, stop it.
00:25:54That's it, that's enough.
00:25:56That's enough.
00:25:57That was awesome.
00:25:59Hey.
00:26:00All right, guys, we got it.
00:26:02Well, we'll see if it won't happen again.
00:26:05Good night.
00:26:10Do you realize how lucky you are?
00:26:12They could have pressed charges as easy as anything.
00:26:15Corey was in trouble, I had to help him.
00:26:17Oh, and I heard it all, I got it.
00:26:19Sometimes you get kids like Corey who...
00:26:21You mean nerds?
00:26:23I was going to say who are smart and sensitive.
00:26:26And, you know, and they get picked on and they turn to...
00:26:30Well, they turn to guys like us.
00:26:32There was nothing else I could do. I had to help.
00:26:35And I'm glad you did.
00:26:37But you could have used more brains.
00:26:39You could have...
00:26:40You could have maybe talked your way out of it.
00:26:42You could have walked away from it.
00:26:44All those fights at the school, what did they get you?
00:26:46Just more fights, didn't they?
00:26:48Didn't they?
00:26:50Yes.
00:26:51Yeah.
00:26:52Come here.
00:26:53I'll tell you something about an old war horse like me.
00:26:56Violence never got anything for anybody anywhere.
00:27:04Gentlemen, gentlemen, the party has arrived.
00:27:07You want to rustle up a hamburger for him?
00:27:09Oh, sure, I can handle that. You want fries with that, Chief?
00:27:12Sure.
00:27:13All right.
00:27:14Okay, knucklehead, have a seat.
00:27:16Hey, Colonel.
00:27:20What are you playing?
00:27:21Draw.
00:27:22All right, hand me up.
00:27:28What do you say?
00:27:29Thanks.
00:27:30You're welcome.
00:27:31It's awesome.
00:27:32Kid, you in or out?
00:27:34Why? You want to lose some money?
00:27:36All right, huh?
00:27:38You got any scratch, kid?
00:27:39Yeah, a little.
00:27:40Hand me up.
00:27:41Are you sure?
00:27:43Now, don't go betting crazy like...
00:27:47Give me something, will you?
00:27:49I'm trying, I'm trying.
00:27:55It's so close.
00:27:59Garbage.
00:28:01How many you want?
00:28:02Give me two.
00:28:04How many you want, kid?
00:28:05I'm good.
00:28:09Okay.
00:28:11I'll take two from the top, if I can.
00:28:15Do a bet, Mac.
00:28:16I'll bet two.
00:28:18I'll see your two and raise you four.
00:28:22I'll leave.
00:28:24I call.
00:28:26All right, kid, flip them out. What you got?
00:28:27Pieces and eights.
00:28:29You got it.
00:28:31You raised on a dead man's hand?
00:28:33Yeah.
00:28:34You got us a shark in the tank.
00:28:35You want a deal again, or you guys just want to give me the money now?
00:28:41See, we're not related.
00:28:45Here you go, kid.
00:28:54Quite a collection of vinyl, huh?
00:28:58Jane, The Butterflies?
00:28:59Yeah.
00:29:01I can't believe my mom would listen to that stuff.
00:29:04She was such a nerd.
00:29:05I wouldn't have it any other way.
00:29:08I had enough to worry about with all the burnouts and punks chasing her around.
00:29:14What was my mom like when she was my age?
00:29:17She was a beautiful young girl.
00:29:21Smart, straight A's, homecoming queen, you name it.
00:29:27I was always worried that some young buck would come along and steal her away from your grandma and me.
00:29:34I guess that's what happened.
00:29:37My dad?
00:29:44Was my mom ever a troublemaker?
00:29:47No, not really.
00:29:49Not until she took off for New York with your dad and didn't tell anyone.
00:29:55I guess that kicked things up a notch around here.
00:29:59I really wasn't prepared for that one.
00:30:03Then my dad just took off again.
00:30:07Maybe it was the best thing for both of them.
00:30:28I'm up, I'm up.
00:30:31Okay then.
00:30:33Here.
00:30:36Lord of the Flies?
00:30:37Good book. Read it.
00:30:41It doesn't matter how many you get through.
00:30:44It does matter how much of a good book gets through to you.
00:30:51Alright, hurry up. We're burning daylight.
00:30:59Bye, sweetie.
00:31:05Why don't you ask Kay out?
00:31:07What?
00:31:08It's obvious she likes you. Trust me, I know.
00:31:11You think so? Well, thanks for the tip, cousin. Hold on.
00:31:15I'm serious. She lights up like a Christmas tree whenever she sees you.
00:31:18Well, you're my age, the last thing you need is a girlfriend.
00:31:21If you ask me, it's the first thing you need.
00:31:23Okay, enough.
00:31:24Hey, where are we going anyway?
00:31:26To your new job.
00:31:27I already have a job.
00:31:28Yeah, well, when you're through working for me, you're going to work for Chick.
00:31:32You might learn something.
00:31:58Hey, Chick.
00:32:01I see you brought me some help.
00:32:03These are all yours.
00:32:06Come on, kid. I'll show you the lay of the land.
00:32:09Don't forget how to find your way home.
00:32:14First thing you gotta do if you're gonna work here is master the dock station's S.O.P.
00:32:21S.O.P.?
00:32:22S.O.P.?
00:32:23Standard Operating Procedure.
00:32:25But first things first.
00:32:27I don't take credit cards.
00:32:29Cash is king around here, you got it?
00:32:31I got it.
00:32:32Where's the register?
00:32:34You won't need one.
00:32:35I'm gonna give you a hundred dollars change at the beginning of every day.
00:32:38You keep all the purchases in this ledger here.
00:32:42And over here, this one.
00:32:45This one.
00:32:46In order to dispense the gas, you have to extract the hose from its holder, like this.
00:32:53Then, to dispense the gas into the boat, you have to hold the end of the hose into the boat's gas tank.
00:33:00Do you understand?
00:33:02Perfectly.
00:33:04Good.
00:33:05Because here comes your first customer.
00:33:08I'll be up here if you need me.
00:33:10Keep your hands inside.
00:33:13Keep your hands inside. Slow down.
00:33:19Take the rail.
00:33:23Watch your hands.
00:33:24Watch your step.
00:33:27Be careful, honey.
00:33:37I'll see you guys in the car.
00:33:38I didn't know you worked here.
00:33:40Neither did I until this morning.
00:33:41Another pleasant surprise from the colonel.
00:33:43Well, looks like you're getting the hang of it.
00:33:49Weren't you supposed to be at the church?
00:33:51I was, but your grandpa gave me the day off.
00:33:55Cory told me how you stuck up for him.
00:33:58He's very heroic of you.
00:34:03Okay, I'll see you at the church.
00:34:05Okay, alright.
00:34:06Okay, bye.
00:34:08Miss Jenny?
00:34:09Hey, Chick.
00:34:13Holy mackerel.
00:34:14I leave you alone for a second and you're messing around with Sweet.
00:34:17And it's Jenny.
00:34:18You know, she's the class victor...
00:34:21Class valiant.
00:34:24Anyway, she's smart as a whip.
00:34:26Come on.
00:34:27Toilet's on the fridge.
00:34:38He wants some help?
00:34:39It's okay, I got it.
00:34:41Yeah, it looks like it.
00:34:44You want me to snout right there?
00:34:45Yeah, sure.
00:34:46Okay.
00:34:49So, how long have you been working with the colonel?
00:34:51Uh, this is my second year.
00:34:53But I've known him ever since I can remember.
00:34:56Everybody knows him.
00:34:57He's street brawler.
00:34:58He's a good guy.
00:34:59He's a good guy.
00:35:00He's a good guy.
00:35:01He's a good guy.
00:35:02He's a good guy.
00:35:03He's a good guy.
00:35:04He's a good guy.
00:35:05He's a good guy.
00:35:06He used to read books to us when we were little.
00:35:08Yeah?
00:35:09He's been trying to push the whole book thing on me.
00:35:11What book?
00:35:12Lord of the Flies.
00:35:13Ever heard of it?
00:35:14You've never read Lord of the Flies?
00:35:16No.
00:35:17Why?
00:35:18Read it.
00:35:19You'll love it.
00:35:20It's a story about these kids that get stranded on this deserted island with no adults and
00:35:23their plane crashes.
00:35:25It's pretty cool.
00:35:26Alright.
00:35:27Maybe I'll check it out.
00:35:30So, you, uh, coming to the barbecue?
00:35:32Of course.
00:35:33I wouldn't miss it.
00:35:34Ugh, Mac always makes the best ribs.
00:35:38You're gonna be there, right?
00:35:39Oh, I'll be there.
00:35:40The colonel commands it.
00:35:55You call those ribs?
00:35:56I knew I should have left you with the hot dogs and the burgers.
00:35:59Don't even start at me, okay?
00:36:00Every Fourth of July, you seem to forget who's the real cook here.
00:36:03Little man, step aside.
00:36:04Let Big Mac show you how to really cook some ribs.
00:36:06One thing, you don't have enough clothes on today.
00:36:08Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:36:09Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:36:10Trying to burn down the church?
00:36:11You don't know nothing about this.
00:36:12Get out of here.
00:36:13You don't know nothing about cooking.
00:36:14You don't want to know what they're doing.
00:36:15Let me take over.
00:36:16Hey, get out.
00:36:17All this barbecue ribs?
00:36:18Come on.
00:36:19We are the barbecue court.
00:36:20Come here.
00:36:21Come on.
00:36:22Hey, hey, hey.
00:36:23Come on, you knuckleheads.
00:36:24Leave this future gyrene alone.
00:36:27Come on.
00:36:28We're gonna have the ribs almost ready.
00:36:30How about having one?
00:36:31With you guys cooking?
00:36:32I don't doubt that's human flesh.
00:36:41Hey.
00:36:43Nice ranch.
00:36:48Go get her, tiger.
00:36:51I could say the same to you.
00:36:55You just did.
00:36:56Thanks.
00:37:02Is this seat taken?
00:37:04It is now.
00:37:14Hi.
00:37:15Hi, Jenny.
00:37:19Good to see you, Dylan.
00:37:22You look really pretty.
00:37:23Thanks.
00:37:25So, are you enjoying the sticks yet?
00:37:27It's not so bad.
00:37:28Probably nothing like New York, though, huh?
00:37:30That's for sure.
00:37:33But I don't mind.
00:37:38How are things going with the boy?
00:37:40Not too bad.
00:37:41He's a good kid.
00:37:42He's just got dealt a couple of cruddy cards.
00:37:46Sounds like you're taking a shine to him.
00:37:50Well, it's what I'm supposed to do, isn't it?
00:37:52After all, he is my grandson.
00:37:54Now, that's not what I mean.
00:37:56What do you mean?
00:37:57Well, I mean, you know, you don't love someone out of a sense of duty.
00:38:03You love someone for beer.
00:38:10Hey, Colonel.
00:38:11Can I take the car to the lake?
00:38:12A bunch of us are gonna watch the fireworks.
00:38:14A bunch of us?
00:38:16Like in Jenny?
00:38:18Oh, leave him alone.
00:38:21All right, be careful.
00:38:23And...
00:38:25Have fun.
00:38:26You too.
00:38:28Oh, yeah.
00:38:29We'll work at it.
00:38:31Come here.
00:38:51Happy birthday, America.
00:38:53Here, here.
00:39:01Yo, homie.
00:39:04Yeah, what's up?
00:39:05You and me, brother.
00:39:07Hey.
00:39:08I'm talking to you.
00:39:11I'm listening.
00:39:12You and me?
00:39:13We got some unfinished business to settle.
00:39:15As much as I'd enjoy kicking your butt a second time,
00:39:18it's just not gonna happen.
00:39:20You know why?
00:39:21Because it wouldn't solve a thing.
00:39:24Not a thing.
00:39:27So I'm gonna walk away, and that ends it right now.
00:39:30Uh-huh.
00:39:38You coming, Jenny?
00:39:39Coming.
00:39:40Bye.
00:39:49Thanks.
00:39:56That Tim is such a creep.
00:39:58I'm so glad you didn't fight.
00:40:00If you really ought to thank you, you saved Tim a lot of pain.
00:40:04You did the right thing.
00:40:12Come on, man!
00:40:13Knock it off!
00:40:14He's having some fun!
00:40:17You stupid creep!
00:40:18Come on, Jenny!
00:40:19How about you ditch those losers and come hang out with us?
00:40:22We're having way more fun!
00:40:28What a jerk. I can't believe this.
00:40:30What's he up to?
00:40:34Tim!
00:40:46Hi, Sam.
00:40:47Colonel.
00:40:48I'm sorry to bother you at this hour,
00:40:50but we had a little problem down at Deschler's Farm tonight.
00:40:54What problem?
00:40:55Looks like a couple of kids were doing a little stunt driving.
00:40:58One of them was your grandson.
00:41:00Is he okay?
00:41:01Oh, he's fine.
00:41:02But your caddy's seen better days.
00:41:04Mm-hmm.
00:41:05Well, I've got to go.
00:41:06Bye.
00:41:07Bye.
00:41:08Bye.
00:41:09Bye.
00:41:10Bye.
00:41:11Bye.
00:41:12Bye.
00:41:13Bye.
00:41:14Bye.
00:41:15Thanks.
00:41:16Mm-hmm.
00:41:17Was there anybody else hurt?
00:41:18No, sir.
00:41:19Corey Miller and Jenny Taylor were with him,
00:41:21but, uh, not a scratch.
00:41:23Thank God.
00:41:25Car took out a couple of mailboxes.
00:41:28We talked to the families,
00:41:29and they agreed not to press charges
00:41:31as long as the mailboxes are fixed.
00:41:34Thanks, Sam.
00:41:35Pleasure.
00:41:39Get over here!
00:41:41Have you lost your mind?
00:41:42You could have gotten yourself killed,
00:41:44if it wasn't Corey or Jenny.
00:41:45It wasn't me.
00:41:46It was that stupid redneck Tim.
00:41:47The sheriff has kept you out of jail twice now.
00:41:50Twice!
00:41:51You know what I think?
00:41:52I think maybe jail's a good place for you.
00:41:54Maybe you'll come to your senses there.
00:41:56Maybe you'll think about it more.
00:41:58Are you done yelling?
00:41:59Do you even want to...
00:42:00No, I'm not done yelling!
00:42:01How else am I gonna get through that thick skull of yours?
00:42:04How consistently dumb do you have to be?
00:42:07How totally...
00:42:08You know what?
00:42:09Shut up, you stupid old man!
00:42:11Hey, you!
00:42:12For God's sake, you!
00:42:14You're not in New York, and I'm not your mother.
00:42:17And I'm not that old that I can't clean your clock.
00:42:22Is this the way you treated Mom?
00:42:43When I was a kid,
00:42:45my dad used to push me up against the wall like that.
00:42:50He did it more than once.
00:42:55Things were never right between him and me.
00:42:59And now I'm doing the same thing to you.
00:43:06Do you want to hear what happened?
00:43:08Yeah.
00:43:09I was at a party.
00:43:11I ran into Tim, and he wanted to fight.
00:43:15I told him what you said to me.
00:43:18You said that it wouldn't solve a thing.
00:43:21Then?
00:43:22Then I walked away.
00:43:25Later, we were driving home, and he forced us off the road.
00:43:29That's it?
00:43:31That's it.
00:43:32End of story.
00:43:35I guess I need to take lessons on how to listen to people.
00:43:41You think I'm too old to take those lessons?
00:43:46Maybe not.
00:43:50I'm proud of you.
00:43:53I really am.
00:43:55I'm proud of you.
00:43:58I really am.
00:44:16I dance all the night,
00:44:18pay the fiddler in the morning,
00:44:21rise and shine coffees in the dining room,
00:44:24and all the tools you need to fix the mailboxes are in the shed.
00:44:28Okay.
00:44:31You finished Lord of the Flies?
00:44:34Yeah.
00:44:35What did you think?
00:44:36It was all right.
00:44:38All right? Better than all right?
00:44:42There's another one that's better than all right.
00:44:47To kill a mockingbird.
00:44:49To kill a mockingbird.
00:44:51See you later.
00:44:54See you later.
00:45:14Dylan.
00:45:15Dylan.
00:45:17Hey, you found her, huh?
00:45:20The colonel used to love that old tub.
00:45:23He'd put his grandmother on the lake every day.
00:45:26I wonder why he doesn't use it anymore.
00:45:30Too many memories, I guess.
00:45:32I thought maybe you could use a little bit.
00:45:36Sweet, thanks.
00:45:40You must have heard what happened.
00:45:43Oh, yeah.
00:45:45I saw your grandfather this morning.
00:45:48He cares a lot about you, Dylan.
00:45:51It may seem tough, but, oh, he's just a product of his generation.
00:45:56Oh, he really does care.
00:45:59If you cut him some slack, I'll bet you things will get a lot better around here.
00:46:05I'll try.
00:46:06Good.
00:46:08Enjoy your omelet.
00:46:10And, you know, if you ever want to talk,
00:46:14you know where to find me.
00:46:16Bye.
00:46:17See you.
00:46:21Bye.
00:46:51Bye.
00:47:21Hello?
00:47:33Hey, honey.
00:47:34Hey, Mom, what's going on?
00:47:36Oh, well, I'm just on my way home.
00:47:38I thought I'd check in on you and the colonel.
00:47:40I haven't heard from you guys for a while.
00:47:42Grandpa's been keeping me kind of busy.
00:47:44I bet.
00:47:46Oh, I miss you.
00:47:48Oh, come on, Mom.
00:47:49Well, I do, and I was thinking that maybe this whole summer thing was a bit rash.
00:47:56What do you think?
00:47:58I don't know.
00:47:59Grandpa's got me kind of booked up.
00:48:01Oh, well, um, think about it, okay?
00:48:04Mom, I've got to get back to work.
00:48:06I still have tons to do.
00:48:07Oh, okay.
00:48:08I'll talk to you later.
00:48:20Hey.
00:48:25What's up, Speedy?
00:48:27Dude, I'm sorry about last night.
00:48:29No, no, no, no, no, no.
00:48:30Don't be sorry.
00:48:31It was the craziest thing that's ever happened to me.
00:48:33How'd it go over with your parents?
00:48:35Oh, they gave me the, uh, the really disappointed in you speech, which was a first for me.
00:48:42I heard the caddy's still buried in the field.
00:48:45Yeah, I know.
00:48:46He's dealing with that right now.
00:48:48Where are you headed?
00:48:50Into town.
00:48:51I was going to grab something to eat at the VFW.
00:48:53Want to come?
00:48:54I can't.
00:48:55I've got to get a bunch of donations in before the colonel gets back.
00:48:58Yeah.
00:49:00I wouldn't keep him waiting.
00:49:01He's in a sweet mood.
00:49:03Yeah, so I'm going to...
00:49:04See you later.
00:49:06Okay?
00:49:07Bye.
00:49:08Can you believe this?
00:49:10They're raising the fees on fishing licenses.
00:49:12Ridiculous.
00:49:13Tell me about it.
00:49:14It cost me a small fortune just to get my prostate medication.
00:49:17Thanks for the info, Mac.
00:49:20Aces and eights.
00:49:22What brings you by?
00:49:23Just wanted to see if I could grab a sandwich.
00:49:25Sure thing.
00:49:26Great.
00:49:27Hey, we heard about your exploits with the caddy.
00:49:29You know, you could have killed yourself.
00:49:30Yeah, it was a stupid thing to do.
00:49:32Hey, we were all young and dumb once too, kid.
00:49:35Even your granddaddy.
00:49:37Heck, he was crazy enough to volunteer for combat duty in the greatest war there ever was.
00:49:43Really?
00:49:44I thought he was just a desk jockey.
00:49:46Who told you that?
00:49:47My mom.
00:49:48She said he was in the army, but he just shuffled paper.
00:49:50You hear that, Mac?
00:49:51Sounds like something he'd say.
00:49:53Absolutely.
00:49:54Why don't you go behind the bar and check out the paper shuffler in action?
00:50:01Colonel didn't ride no desk, kid.
00:50:03He was in the 3rd Armored Division.
00:50:05Battled his way through France, Belgium, and into Germany.
00:50:08He was a war hero.
00:50:11You know, he and Chick were at the Bulge together.
00:50:13The Bulge?
00:50:15Largest battle U.S. Army's ever fought.
00:50:17He won the Distinguished Service Cross for saving Chick's life.
00:50:20After the war, he stayed around here in the National Guard.
00:50:23Retired a full colonel back in 79?
00:50:25Yeah, 79.
00:50:27I never knew.
00:50:28Well, why would you?
00:50:29I mean, veterans have a hard time sharing their experiences with people who weren't over there.
00:50:32Now, your grandfather probably thought you didn't get it or didn't care for that man.
00:50:36So all you guys were in the military, huh?
00:50:38I was in Vietnam, Mac was in Korea.
00:50:41Chick and your granddaddy were in the big one.
00:50:44World War II.
00:50:50Yellow.
00:50:52What?
00:50:56Never mind. We'll be right down there.
00:50:58What's wrong?
00:50:59It's the colonel.
00:51:05Did Dylan know I'm here?
00:51:07Yeah, he had Johnny Mackert coming over.
00:51:09How much love do you vampires have?
00:51:12How much love do you vampires need? I need a little to operate on, you know.
00:51:15Don't worry. You've got half a tank or so.
00:51:18Yeah, half a tank. A man like me needs more than that.
00:51:21If I fall, you catch me.
00:51:23Will you stop being such a baby?
00:51:25Oh, look.
00:51:26Colonel, you alright?
00:51:27Oh, yeah, I'm fine. I'm fine. Don't worry.
00:51:29I took a spill in that field.
00:51:32Chick was there, for whatever that was worth.
00:51:35Sorry about the car.
00:51:36Huh?
00:51:37If I didn't wreck it, you wouldn't have been out there.
00:51:39Stop talking about the car, that spilt milk. I'm fine.
00:51:42We'll get you home, colonel.
00:51:44Grab that wheelchair.
00:51:45No, you don't. No, you don't give me no wheelchair.
00:51:49I'll walk out of here like a man.
00:51:51Watch me.
00:51:52See?
00:51:54You staying the night?
00:51:55No, I'm coming.
00:51:57Catch me if I fall.
00:52:02Uh, Dylan.
00:52:04That trip to the hospital wore me out.
00:52:07Uh, I'm going to grab some sactite.
00:52:10Would you mind getting a load of laundry and sticking it in the dryer?
00:52:13Sure, no problem.
00:52:14Thanks, buddy.
00:52:38Fuck.
00:52:56Grandma?
00:52:57Grandma?
00:53:06No way.
00:53:11Looking for anything in particular?
00:53:13I'm sorry, I was just curious. I'll put them back.
00:53:16That's okay.
00:53:19Let me look at those things.
00:53:25There I am.
00:53:26I thought you were taking a nap.
00:53:28Taking a nap with that medication? Nobody can take a nap.
00:53:39You were at the concentration camps?
00:53:42Yeah.
00:53:45But that's a story for another day.
00:53:49But you fought in the army, right?
00:53:51I did, but in the end I was mostly back and forth behind the scenes.
00:53:58That's not what Johnny and Mac were saying.
00:54:00They said you were a hero in World War II.
00:54:03And that you won some medal for saving Chick's life.
00:54:06Yeah, well, Johnny and Mac's stories are kind of like wine.
00:54:11They get better as they age.
00:54:14I got something in here that I think you'll find pretty nifty.
00:54:20Nifty?
00:54:22Well, cool in your language.
00:54:25Here, try it on.
00:54:33Oh, man.
00:54:38Hey, it's almost a perfect fit.
00:54:41Hey, it's almost a perfect fit.
00:54:43More than I could brag about.
00:54:48Say, since I'm already up, G.I., how about you being up for a cup of joe?
00:54:57Come on, I'll brew.
00:55:04You know, I noticed how you've been hanging around that Jenny a lot lately.
00:55:10Why don't you give her a call and ask her for a date?
00:55:15I want to, I just can't get up the nerve to call her.
00:55:17Oh, boy, things never change.
00:55:20That's exactly how I felt when I was asking your grandmother for our first date.
00:55:25I was as nervous as a sinner in church.
00:55:28You know, sometimes it just takes that leap into the great unknown.
00:55:33What if she says no?
00:55:34Well, how are you going to find out unless you ask her?
00:55:37Hey, she's probably home by now from her job at the church.
00:55:40Call her up and ask her out.
00:55:42I don't know, what am I going to say?
00:55:44You're going to ask her if she wants to go out or not.
00:55:46Okay, I'll do it, but on one condition.
00:55:49Yeah, what's that?
00:55:50I call Jenny, you call Kay.
00:55:53Kay?
00:55:54You've been asking me to do all kinds of crazy things all summer long.
00:55:58I want you to do this one thing.
00:56:01All right, all right, all right.
00:56:05All right.
00:56:24Hey, Jenny, it's Dylan.
00:56:27You want to go out with me?
00:56:30Yeah.
00:56:32All right, I'll see you then.
00:56:45Turns it out flat, huh?
00:56:47Not a chance.
00:56:48Really?
00:56:49Now it's your turn.
00:56:55Come on, you're a colonel.
00:56:58Go.
00:57:08How could you take my money in that pirate's double header?
00:57:11It's strictly business, Chick.
00:57:14Nothing personal.
00:57:15You could have told me they were in last place.
00:57:17They've been in the basement every year.
00:57:19Quick, newsflash.
00:57:21Clementi dead.
00:57:22Starchild retired.
00:57:25Hey, hey, what do you got there?
00:57:29It's a mailbox.
00:57:30Whoa, look at that.
00:57:32It's a mailbox.
00:57:34Yeah.
00:57:35Let me see that.
00:57:36It's for you guys.
00:57:37Where'd you get that?
00:57:39Dylan just finished it.
00:57:40A boy has got talent.
00:57:42Look at this.
00:57:43I mean, in all my life, I've never seen delinquency pay off so well.
00:57:48That is some fine craftsmanship.
00:57:50You did a spread, son.
00:57:52Yeah.
00:57:53Like some chow?
00:57:54Sure.
00:57:55The usual.
00:57:56All right, Bert.
00:57:57It's called some fries to go.
00:57:58Coming right up.
00:58:00I hear through the grapevine you got a big date coming up Saturday night.
00:58:04Who told you that?
00:58:06Where do you think?
00:58:09You never said it was classified.
00:58:11Grandpa's got a date, too, don't you, Grandpa?
00:58:13Is that right?
00:58:14Hey.
00:58:15Whoa.
00:58:16What's going on?
00:58:17All right, all right.
00:58:18Come on, Colonel.
00:58:19Daddy.
00:58:22So where are you planning on going?
00:58:23I don't know.
00:58:24Maybe we'll get something to eat at Dairy Delight.
00:58:29Are there any movie theaters around here?
00:58:31No.
00:58:33Here you go, Dylan.
00:58:34Thanks.
00:58:36Well, maybe we'll just go to an arcade or something.
00:58:39Oh, good.
00:58:41See ya.
00:58:42All right, well done, son.
00:58:44All right.
00:58:46We got to plan something better than that for him.
00:58:49What do you got in mind?
00:58:50I don't know, but something.
00:58:51What do you think?
00:59:21All right.
00:59:22All right.
00:59:50How you doing?
00:59:52Hey.
00:59:55Oh, these are for you.
00:59:59They're beautiful.
01:00:02You ready?
01:00:05I'm leaving. I'll be back.
01:00:07Let's go.
01:00:11Oh, do you mind a little walk?
01:00:13The Colonel has the caddy, so Chick said he'd loan me his, but it's over at the BFW.
01:00:19You look nice.
01:00:20Me?
01:00:22Look at you.
01:00:30Well, this is it.
01:00:32I'll get the keys.
01:00:40What's going on?
01:00:42I have no idea.
01:00:44Good evening.
01:00:48This way, please.
01:00:52This way, please.
01:00:59This is amazing.
01:01:04You can go in.
01:01:08Good evening, folks.
01:01:13Good evening.
01:01:15Good evening.
01:01:17Good evening.
01:01:19Good evening.
01:01:22And what are we drinking this evening?
01:01:25What do you recommend?
01:01:26How special is a ginger mint julep?
01:01:29Sounds yummy. I'll take it.
01:01:31And you, sir?
01:01:32A strawberry daiquiri, if you please.
01:01:35Sounds kind of girly, but fine. Coming right up.
01:01:42He's so cute.
01:01:45So you really have no idea who did this?
01:01:47None. I'm just as surprised as you are.
01:01:50It's crazy.
01:02:03Good evening, Colonel. Why don't you look handsome?
01:02:05Well, come in.
01:02:08You look pretty nice yourself, my lady.
01:02:12Do you mind if we go into the kitchen?
01:02:15I have to check on something.
01:02:18One virgin julep.
01:02:20One virgin daiquiri.
01:02:24Cheers!
01:02:34There we go.
01:02:39Now, will you see this?
01:02:43This.
01:02:45Wow!
01:02:47Oh, you never cease to surprise me.
01:02:49Well, I figure you cook for me every day.
01:02:52Least I could do is give you a break.
01:02:54Oh, Colonel.
01:02:57Now, how about a little libation?
01:03:06Grilled salmon for the lady.
01:03:13Prime rib for the gentleman.
01:03:16Looks great.
01:03:18Enjoy.
01:03:25Those guys must really like you.
01:03:39Why, you flicker.
01:03:41You didn't have to do all this for me.
01:03:43Well, I wanted to.
01:03:46I'm glad you asked me out.
01:03:47Me too.
01:03:50After all ten years of flirting rolled up into one dinner.
01:03:55No pressure.
01:03:58How are things going around here?
01:04:00All pretty good.
01:04:01There are a few issues with Dylan.
01:04:05Well, you have to think about it.
01:04:07You're the first real male influence to be in his life since his dad left.
01:04:12He wants to get to know you.
01:04:15And so do I.
01:04:19I got that.
01:04:21A couple days ago, he was grilling me about the war.
01:04:27There you go.
01:04:28He's trying to learn more about you.
01:04:31I don't like talking about it.
01:04:33And so up till now, he just thought of you as some grumpy old man he had nothing in common with.
01:04:40This is a golden opportunity to bridge that gap.
01:04:45I'll take your advice on one condition.
01:04:48What could that be?
01:04:49That you dance with me.
01:04:55I thought you'd never ask.
01:04:58That was fantastic.
01:05:00I never knew Mac was such a great cook.
01:05:02Me either. I thought he maxed out after burgers and fries.
01:05:16Wanna dance?
01:05:18Sure.
01:05:19Come on.
01:05:30Open it more so we can see.
01:05:33I had a great night tonight. Thanks.
01:05:38I'm really glad we met this summer.
01:05:42Me too.
01:06:08Oh boy, this has been some fantastic evening.
01:06:13It's getting kind of late. I'd better be going.
01:06:19Okay.
01:06:21You gonna be at the diner tomorrow?
01:06:24Oh yeah, I'll be there for my usual saucer of milk.
01:06:35Night.
01:06:37Good night, my dear.
01:06:50Do you go out with a lot of girls in New York?
01:06:54Not as pretty as you.
01:07:19Hey, I thought video games were a mindless waste of time.
01:07:44It's Gary's fault.
01:07:46He's a bad influence on us.
01:07:47Terrible kid.
01:07:48Bad influence? I'm a hostage.
01:07:50I mean, you guys have been making me play this for the past two hours.
01:07:52Yeah, look who's talking.
01:07:54All right, all right. How'd it go, big guy?
01:07:57All right, good work, good work.
01:08:00You're in a second date?
01:08:02Yep.
01:08:07How was your date?
01:08:12Sounds good.
01:08:14Well, I'm hitting the sack. Don't party too late.
01:08:17All right, all right.
01:08:18Sleep tight.
01:08:20Here we go, here we go.
01:08:22I know you're gonna dream.
01:08:31What's up?
01:08:32I gotta go to the doctor. Feel like driving me?
01:08:35Sure.
01:08:39Uh, Grandpa?
01:08:42Dead battery. Bummer.
01:08:45Come on.
01:08:48You always gotta have a plan B.
01:08:56All right.
01:08:59What do you think?
01:09:00Oh, man. This is sweet.
01:09:03Yeah?
01:09:05How old is it?
01:09:07It's a 47 Chevy. It's the first new car I ever bought.
01:09:11It's the car that I picked up your grandmother in on our first date.
01:09:17This is awesome.
01:09:19Hop in.
01:09:21I don't know how to drive a stick.
01:09:23What? You learned that between walking and talking?
01:09:26Oh, man. Yeah.
01:09:28I guess I'll have to teach you. Let's go.
01:09:35Give it a little gas.
01:09:37Give it a little gas.
01:09:43Ah!
01:09:45Find it. Don't grind it.
01:09:54You know, they're glitches. They're always glitches.
01:09:56Come on, come on.
01:09:57Hey.
01:09:59Beautiful.
01:10:01You can do it.
01:10:03Good, good.
01:10:04Good, good. Beautiful.
01:10:07Beautiful. You gotta go. You gotta go.
01:10:16Are you all set, Grandpa?
01:10:18Yeah.
01:10:20Come on.
01:10:34I need to talk with you.
01:10:38Is everything okay?
01:10:40Afraid not.
01:10:42There's some things in life you just can't plan for.
01:10:47What do you mean?
01:10:49Oh.
01:10:52I've, uh, been having treatment for lymphoma.
01:11:00It was in remission, but now it's back.
01:11:02Can't they do anything about it?
01:11:04Well, they've tried everything, but it keeps spreading.
01:11:12I'm afraid I don't have much time.
01:11:15Does Mom know?
01:11:17Well, she thought it was gone like everyone else.
01:11:22I'm sorry, Grandpa.
01:11:23Yeah?
01:11:24I was just getting to know you.
01:11:28And I'm grateful for that.
01:11:30I thank God I had this time to spend with you, to get to know you.
01:11:40To get to know the man that you're becoming.
01:11:44Yeah, and about 60 years ago, I was becoming a man at almost your age.
01:11:54World War II?
01:11:55World War II?
01:11:56Yeah.
01:11:57Chick and I volunteered in June of 43 and ended up at Normandy in the 3rd Armored Division.
01:12:05You were at D-Day?
01:12:06No.
01:12:07We followed it up by a few weeks, but we made the drive across France in December of 44,
01:12:15ended up on Hitler's doorstep, and that's when he threw everything he had at us.
01:12:23Now, I realize that you suffered because your dad wasn't there for you,
01:12:30but you've got to remind yourself that his leaving wasn't your fault and it wasn't your mother's fault.
01:12:38Yeah.
01:12:40And you've got to promise me that you'll make her proud of you.
01:12:46I'll make her proud, Grandpa.
01:12:52Okay.
01:13:17Dylan?
01:13:19Are you okay?
01:13:21It's my grandfather. He's very sick.
01:13:26My father's his doctor.
01:13:31He says it's pretty bad.
01:13:36You have to look at the time you've had with him as a gift
01:13:42and make the most of what he has left.
01:13:49Okay.
01:14:01Keep your eyes closed.
01:14:03You're taking me to the woodshed? I didn't do nothing.
01:14:07No, come on.
01:14:10Okay, close your eyes.
01:14:11All right, they're closed.
01:14:13Stay right here.
01:14:15Okay, open your eyes.
01:14:19Oh.
01:14:28Kay told me you and Grandma used to love to sail, and I just hated seeing her sitting here rotting away.
01:14:34She's beautiful.
01:14:37Your grandmother would love it.
01:14:39How did you pull this off?
01:14:41How did you pull this off?
01:14:43I don't know what to say.
01:14:45Corey and I did all the body work.
01:14:47Chick helped out with the sails and instruments.
01:14:49Kay painted it with your favorite colors.
01:14:51You got a whole crew together.
01:14:54Should we take her for a spin?
01:14:56Absolutely.
01:15:12I love you.
01:15:14I love you.
01:15:16I love you.
01:15:18I love you.
01:15:20I love you.
01:15:22I love you.
01:15:25I love you.
01:15:27I love you.
01:15:29I love you.
01:15:31I love you.
01:15:33I love you.
01:15:35I love you.
01:15:37I love you.
01:15:39I love you.
01:15:41I love you.
01:16:03You kids keep on going.
01:16:05The wind says get good.
01:16:07Ah, good idea.
01:16:09I'll show you Yirrkway Island.
01:16:11Come on, we got to move on.
01:16:14All right.
01:16:15Let's go.
01:16:16Let's do it.
01:16:26What's that?
01:16:32It's beautiful.
01:16:34It was my grandmother's.
01:16:36My grandpa gave it to her.
01:16:37She used to wear it all the time.
01:16:40Dylan, I love it.
01:16:42I can't believe you're leaving in two weeks.
01:16:44I know.
01:16:46You got to come out and visit me.
01:16:48I'll be going crazy.
01:16:50My mom's sending me to an all-boys school.
01:16:52Good.
01:16:53Yeah, for you.
01:17:01I've had the best summer of my life.
01:17:04I think I'm in love with you.
01:17:10I think I'm in love with you, too.
01:17:25Hey, Grandpa.
01:17:28Hey, I docked the boat.
01:17:30Hey, I docked the boat and gave her a wash.
01:17:32She looks good.
01:17:34Hey, did you notice that the cleats in the back
01:17:36are messed up on the boat?
01:17:40Hey, Grandpa.
01:17:43Grandpa.
01:17:44Grandpa.
01:17:45Grandpa!
01:17:57Are you comfortable?
01:17:59Are you comfortable, sweet?
01:18:02Hey, Bart.
01:18:04You ever tell those guys about the time
01:18:05he commandeered that German supply truck in France?
01:18:09You remember that?
01:18:11The one loaded with booze.
01:18:14You're going to like this, Dylan.
01:18:15It took the MPs two days to find the truck,
01:18:18and it was empty.
01:18:20Half the Third Armoured was blitzed.
01:18:22Even General Rose was hammered.
01:18:25He wanted to give us a medal for that one.
01:18:28And it's the ultimate morale booster
01:18:30to be able to buy a round for 5,000 guys.
01:18:38I wanted to talk to you about this one.
01:18:43I get it now. It was horrible.
01:18:49Yes, it was.
01:18:51The picture in the album?
01:18:53Was that from a concentration camp?
01:18:55A place called Nordhausen.
01:18:59We liberated it.
01:19:03You don't have to talk about it, Grandpa.
01:19:05Ah, it's okay.
01:19:08I want you to hear this.
01:19:12Not a day has gone by that I haven't thought of the men in Nordhausen.
01:19:19I see their faces and hear their voices like it was yesterday.
01:19:25Most of them never made it back.
01:19:27Death cheated them of life's opportunities.
01:19:34You have so much potential, Dylan.
01:19:38The men of Nordhausen never got a chance to use theirs.
01:19:45I made the best of mine.
01:19:49And I want the same from you.
01:19:55I'm proud of you, boy.
01:19:58Thanks, Grandpa.
01:20:24I love you.
01:20:26I love you, too.
01:20:28I love you, too.
01:20:30I love you, too.
01:20:54By direction of the President, the Distinguished Service Cross is awarded
01:20:57to First Lieutenant Bartholomew Francis Cahill, 3rd Armored Division,
01:21:01for extraordinary heroism and action on December 25, 1944.
01:21:06Surrounded and decimated by elements of two SS Panzer Divisions,
01:21:11First Lieutenant Cahill refused to surrender his platoon to the enemy.
01:21:16Instead, he rallied his soldiers, many of whom were wounded,
01:21:19and conducted a 14-hour march through German lines
01:21:22until they reached an American position the next day.
01:21:25For the duration of the march, First Lieutenant Cahill carried a wounded man on his back.
01:21:30His unit was under constant fire from enemy forces.
01:21:33First Lieutenant Cahill gallantly led his platoon
01:21:36as they destroyed elements of an SS Panzer reconnaissance company in fierce fighting.
01:21:41His actions reflect great credit upon him,
01:21:44the 3rd Armored Division, and the United States Army,
01:21:47by command of Major General Rose.
