Round 4 of the 2000 F1 season at Silverstone.
Transcript
00:00:00Last July's British Grand Prix produced a defining moment of the 99 season.
00:00:05Michael Schumacher's crash which sidelined him for several races.
00:00:09David Coulthard went on to win his home Grand Prix.
00:00:12But today at Silverstone there are two big stories.
00:00:15With the date change, spring showers.
00:00:18The skies have opened up leaving Silverstone soggy.
00:00:22Big story number two, Button Mania.
00:00:25Britain's new young sports hero has swept over Silverstone.
00:00:30Music
00:00:52Welcome to Silverstone.
00:00:54Site of today's running of the 51st British Grand Prix.
00:00:58Round four in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship for 2000.
00:01:03Hello everyone, I'm Mike Joy.
00:01:04Welcoming you to our Fox Sportsnet coverage.
00:01:06Alongside Derek Bell, five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
00:01:10And from the Sunday Times, Peter Windsor joins us from the pit lane and the paddock area.
00:01:16Let's have a look at what's on the menu for today's Mercedes-Benz pre-race show.
00:01:21Eddie Jordan's Grand Prix team starts its 150th race today.
00:01:26And we'll count down to the U.S. Grand Prix at Indianapolis with Gerhard Berger of BMW.
00:01:31It was wet and wild all weekend.
00:01:33Up until now where the sun is shining.
00:01:35And we'll continue our exclusive interview with, joint interview with the Schumacher brothers.
00:01:43Well they're just going out on this reconnaissance lap.
00:01:46Very, very important reconnaissance lap.
00:01:48For the first time it's actually been dry all weekend.
00:01:51So particularly for Ferrari, haven't done much testing here.
00:01:54It is the test track for many teams.
00:01:56Very important 15 minutes here where they can just go around.
00:01:59Have to go in the pit lane and then they can go out again.
00:02:01They can't do a complete lap.
00:02:04Michael Schumacher comes into Britain with a maximum 30 points with three wins.
00:02:08His teammate Rubens Barrichello second in the Drivers' Championship.
00:02:11Benetton's Fisichella, defending world champ HÃ¥konen.
00:02:14Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve the top half dozen.
00:02:18Ferrari with a big lead in the manufacturers' standings over McLaren.
00:02:21Benetton, Jordan, Williams and BAR scrapping for best of the rest.
00:02:28The cars continue to go out and take their reconnaissance laps.
00:02:31Very packed grid as you can see out there.
00:02:33A lot of dignitaries, celebrities and a few American race drivers of note that we'll get to in just a moment here.
00:02:44Well let's visit with Peter Windsor in the paddock.
00:02:46A lot has happened in Formula 1 since the Grand Prix of San Marino two weeks ago.
00:02:51Here's Peter.
00:02:53Traditional English Easter weather has meant plenty of down times for the Formula 1 teams.
00:02:57And of course rumours have been flying.
00:02:59The big news is that the future of the Prost team is by no means secure.
00:03:02The relationship between Prost and Peugeot sadly has never been worse.
00:03:06And apparently the Prost team is on the market.
00:03:08So looking for a buyer there.
00:03:10The Prost team valued at around $200 million after a sale of 10% to the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy Group for $20 million.
00:03:17But probably that is an overvaluation because this team is based in France.
00:03:20And these days even Renault want to base themselves in England.
00:03:24In other news, Riccardo Zonta had a horrendous accident in testing last week on the same corner where Michael Schumacher went off last year.
00:03:31Silverson has spent $1 million upgrading their circuit since that Schumacher accident last year.
00:03:36Replacing all the wooden fences with concrete walls and building much thicker and higher tyre walls.
00:03:42Zonta went off at the end of that main hanger straight, skated over the sand trap, into the tyre wall, into a restricted area and the wheel ended up in a grandstand.
00:03:50Luckily, of course, during testing that grandstand was empty.
00:03:53So further modifications made to that corner with more tyres, higher and thicker.
00:03:57Reynard, meanwhile, making no comment about that accident.
00:04:00We understand, however, that a front suspension wishbone pulled out of the chassis as Zonta hit the brakes at 190 mph.
00:04:09Thanks, Peter. We saw a bit of Jenson Button earlier.
00:04:11There he leads a group back into the pit lane.
00:04:13Button mania is really the big story here at Silverstone.
00:04:17And he is starting sixth today.
00:04:19There's David Coulthard who will line up fourth.
00:04:21He's the defending champion of the British Grand Prix.
00:04:25Well, it's a big day for Eddie Jordan.
00:04:27His team is headquartered just outside the gates of Silverstone.
00:04:30And we asked Eddie about the highs and lows of his 150 Grand Prix races.
00:04:34The lows are very simple.
00:04:36I suppose Imola 94, the horrific accidents.
00:04:39And also, I suppose, the trauma of 92 when Jordan really should have been bankrupt by strokes of good fortune everywhere.
00:04:47And you could actually say the survival of 92 was also one of the good points that we were able to make it.
00:04:52But from a sporting point of view, I think Spa, where we finished and made history by finishing first and second, it sort of looms.
00:04:58I think everybody's first ever success in any major formula is always a key good part.
00:05:03And they're the two things.
00:05:05Of course, to do it all at Silverstone is an extra bonus.
00:05:08Not alone is it the 50th British Grand Prix, but more especially, it's our 150th.
00:05:12And it's our nearest track to our home in Ireland, of course.
00:05:16And we've got a lot of fans here locally because everybody started their life at Silverstone.
00:05:20So it is a very special weekend.
00:05:23But Derek, what Jordan has accomplished is much more than statistical.
00:05:26Yeah, well, in fact, of course, he's brought on a lot of young drivers through Formula 3, Formula 3000, then into Formula 1.
00:05:33And really, you know, he's one of the outstanding characters of Formula 1.
00:05:36And he really does enjoy himself.
00:05:38Yes, he does.
00:05:39Well, a little earlier this weekend, they held a charity ball, raised some funds for some very worthwhile causes.
00:05:46Eddie Irvine, David Coulthard among the drivers who were involved.
00:05:50We'll be right back.
00:05:55Welcome back to our Mercedes-Benz pre-race.
00:05:57There's Mika Hakkinen, who will not start on pole for the first time this season.
00:06:01Both the McLarens will line up in row number two after a very wild qualifying session yesterday.
00:06:08Well, there's been some technical changes in Formula 1, mainly dealing with the pit lane cruise control.
00:06:14Peter has more.
00:06:15This is the point at which the pit lane speed limit begins.
00:06:18Now, at the San Marino Grand Prix two weeks ago, the FIA banned speed limiters in the car.
00:06:24That's because they felt speed limiters were being misused as a way of using traction control.
00:06:30And in the past, if you look very closely at some photographs, you can see on the grid, particularly in wet races, some fuel flaps are up.
00:06:37That's because when you do activate the speed limiter in the cockpit, a fuel flap comes up.
00:06:42The FIA decided to ban speed limiters altogether.
00:06:44But, of course, in the build-up to the British Grand Prix last week, several teams tested without them and found it was all too difficult.
00:06:50The drivers went back to the FIA and said, look, we've got too much to do in the cockpit now.
00:06:54We have the lights to look at.
00:06:55We've got to keep just below 48 miles an hour.
00:06:58We have to press the fuel flap button.
00:07:00We have to remember to put it into the neutral button.
00:07:02And also, we have to find our right slot in the pit lane.
00:07:05It's all too dangerous.
00:07:06So the FIA have now changed their mind.
00:07:08Speed limiters will be allowed.
00:07:09But now, a red light at the back of the car will be activated, as well as the fuel flap.
00:07:14So if you see on the grid cars with the fuel flap up and with a red light glowing, you'll know that something funny is going on.
00:07:20Well, I must admit, as far as a driver's concerned, I would not like to have more things to do when I come out the pit lane.
00:07:26It's busy enough as it is.
00:07:27Well, even on the road, if you're looking for the radar cops, you're not paying attention to your driving.
00:07:31And look at the traffic.
00:07:33They call it a tailback here in England.
00:07:36And they say on some roads, it is hours.
00:07:38They say if you're not left home, don't come because it's so hard getting parked in the fields that are so muddy from the rains.
00:07:45Well, we'll hope the weather's better in Indianapolis when we go there in September.
00:07:49Win on Sunday, sell on Monday is long been a hallmark of U.S. auto racing.
00:07:53Will it be true for the F1 manufacturers?
00:07:55Well, we are really looking forward to come back to the States.
00:08:00One side of BMW, my side also from the sporting side because to come back to North America is very important for Formula 1 and it's important, of course, for BMW.
00:08:10BMW is very strong in the States and America, North America.
00:08:14It's the second biggest market.
00:08:16So, of course, we are looking forward to doing good there.
00:08:19And I think to have the place Indianapolis is great.
00:08:23We're going to come over there.
00:08:24We're going to show all our clients our technical competence.
00:08:28And it's going to be great.
00:08:31Gerhard, I want an M5 if you win.
00:08:35You can call for ticket info for the U.S. Grand Prix.
00:08:38There's the toll-free number or e-mail them.
00:08:40Tickets at brickyard.com is the address.
00:08:44There's our pole sitter, Rubens Barrichello.
00:08:46And there's Michael Schumacher getting set to roll out.
00:08:52As these recon laps finish up and they'll come around and take up their grid positions.
00:08:58We're at Silverstone, which has a tremendous racing history.
00:09:04As you look at Ralph Schumacher.
00:09:06Much of the attention at Williams on his teammate, Jenson Button.
00:09:11Silverstone is run by the British Racing Drivers Club.
00:09:15And it's not a club to which you can apply to join.
00:09:18It's not a club to which you can apply to join.
00:09:21It's very exclusive.
00:09:22You have to win a number of major races even to be nominated.
00:09:26A list of some of the luminaries and their beautiful clubhouse here overlooking the circuit.
00:09:36Welcome back to our Mercedes-Benz pre-race as we count down to the British Grand Prix.
00:09:42And in two weeks, we'll be at the Grand Prix of Spain.
00:09:4510 a.m. your local time on most of our Fox Sportsnet affiliates.
00:09:49We'd like to hear from you when we do read all of your e-mails.
00:09:52Send them to formula1 at foxsports.net.
00:09:55We try to incorporate some of those ideas into our coverage.
00:10:00We're going to have a look at the course of Silverstone and take a lap around.
00:10:03And we'll do so with an honored member of the British Racing Drivers Club.
00:10:08My partner, Derek Bell.
00:10:10Well, thanks, Mike.
00:10:11Yeah, 3.19 miles.
00:10:13Drivers really love this track.
00:10:14Very demanding.
00:10:15High-speed circuit.
00:10:16Stowe is a good place to overtake.
00:10:18And, of course, breaking into Abbey is another good place.
00:10:20But nevertheless, let's do a lap with David Coulthard, which was in the rain yesterday.
00:10:25Very, very wet indeed.
00:10:27We're going past the pits.
00:10:28Normally, in the dry, we'll give you the dry speeds.
00:10:30We're up to 190 miles an hour.
00:10:31150 through this turn, which is, in fact, a fourth-gear corner.
00:10:36Speeds his way down into this new complex before Beckett's.
00:10:39As he comes into Beckett's turn, he's actually doing 170.
00:10:42You've got to keep it very neat and tidy through here
00:10:44because the car, if you get it out too wide as you come out,
00:10:47you can't get the speed onto this long straight.
00:10:49The fastest part of Silverstone.
00:10:51195 miles an hour.
00:10:53The circuit is, in fact, very smooth, but it's very bumpy
00:10:56just as you come to break-in area down here for Stowe,
00:10:58which has been slightly changed.
00:11:00A lot of safety gone in there since Schumacher's incident
00:11:02and Zonta's, of course, working their way up
00:11:05as he goes down Vale, down towards the first part of Club.
00:11:08Slowest part of the circuit.
00:11:09Second-gear corner.
00:11:11Very, very slippery course in the wet, as you can see.
00:11:13And even in the dry, you want to keep the car to the right
00:11:15as much as you can.
00:11:16You don't want it falling off that camber.
00:11:18He's excelling, I think, his way up to Abbey Curve,
00:11:20which used to be a 190-mile-an-hour left-hander.
00:11:23Now it's a very slow 50-mile-an-hour second-gear corner
00:11:26as he works his way through this bit.
00:11:28Again, has difficulty getting traction.
00:11:30You have difficulty in the dry as well.
00:11:31Into Bridge.
00:11:33Don't want to get out too wide at Bridge
00:11:34because you've got this complex coming up of Prairie,
00:11:37which is this part here.
00:11:38Accelerate, brake very hard.
00:11:40Then into Brooklands, a much tighter corner.
00:11:42You don't want it to go out too far to the right
00:11:44because you've got to have the car correct for this next bit.
00:11:47David Cormer smits the entry as he went in there.
00:11:49Not easy to do in the wet.
00:11:51And as he then drifts out, as he comes out into Wicker,
00:11:54back up to 175 miles an hour.
00:11:56That was a lap with David Coulthard.
00:11:59And the weather you saw there
00:12:00is just about the way it's been all weekend.
00:12:03Until today.
00:12:04What's really wet are the car parks,
00:12:06the farmer's fields that are used to park the huge crowds
00:12:09for the British Grand Prix.
00:12:10So the crowd is having a difficult time getting in.
00:12:13But it's bright and sunny here on the circuit.
00:12:16And there hasn't been much practice in dry weather.
00:12:19In fact, yesterday was anything but in qualifying
00:12:22for today's British Grand Prix.
00:12:24Qualifying was quite unusual yesterday.
00:12:26It was very damp at the start, but it did dry out.
00:12:28But you could see the ominous clouds above
00:12:30waiting to dump a load of water down.
00:12:32This is the areas around.
00:12:34So they had to use helicopters
00:12:35to try and dry the circuit off, can you believe?
00:12:38This they did quite a good job of,
00:12:39and it was Jos Verstappen who went out and did a super job.
00:12:42He was well up, but then he finally finished 8th.
00:12:45Nick Hyde felt, well, he's not had a good year at all so far.
00:12:48Not at all happy in 17th place
00:12:50in this very unfortunate Prost team.
00:12:52Ralf Schumacher, though, he went out at that point,
00:12:54got pole position, finally qualifying 7th.
00:12:57Johnny Herbert, well, let's ride with him in the wet
00:12:59and see just what it's like out there in qualifying.
00:13:02Remember, we are higher than the driver's helmet,
00:13:05so it's not exactly the perfect view.
00:13:06Iano Trulli, he qualified 11th,
00:13:08but it's his team, Heinz-Werner Frenzeln,
00:13:10that actually got on the front row of the grid.
00:13:12Jack Villeneuve, well, he was trying like crazy
00:13:14with nine minutes to go, and he was on pole.
00:13:16But just a bit too soon, Jacques.
00:13:18Unfortunately, several people saved their best to the end
00:13:21as the drying conditions enabled Michael Schumacher
00:13:23to work his way up,
00:13:24but he missed his last lap by 0.1 of a second
00:13:27and had to come in Rubens Barrichello.
00:13:29However, he gets pole, the third pole of his career.
00:13:31Absolutely wonderful for this young man from Brazil.
00:13:34Mika Hakkinen there, well, he's trying exceptionally hard,
00:13:38but it wasn't him. He didn't do it.
00:13:40Let's go to Rubens Barrichello, hear what he has to say.
00:13:43I feel very good. I must be honest
00:13:45that I enjoy this type of condition.
00:13:47I have to drive fast to try to win my first race.
00:13:51Obviously, we're starting from pole.
00:13:53This is my best chance.
00:13:55Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo speaks to Peter Windsor.
00:13:58Luca, what was it like on the pit wall
00:14:00with one minute to go?
00:14:01Yeah, unbelievable.
00:14:02I was sure that this qualifying would be like a roulette in a casino,
00:14:08but I'm very pleased to see the red ball on it.
00:14:12For us, it's a big satisfaction
00:14:14to have Silverstone and Ferrari in pole.
00:14:17And I'm very pleased for Rubens
00:14:18because for him it was very important.
00:14:21He was sure to do well.
00:14:23He was quicker since the first lap,
00:14:25even in the wet of the morning.
00:14:28So I'm pleased for him.
00:14:29I'm happy for Ferrari.
00:14:30Long race.
00:14:31Schumacher hasn't done the last lap,
00:14:34but I think he will be in condition
00:14:36to do a very good race tomorrow.
00:14:38Ferrari on the pole for the British Grand Prix.
00:14:42Well, Derek, strategies for today?
00:14:44Well, of course, it's slightly changed a bit now
00:14:46because it is going to be dry by the look of it.
00:14:48But clean pit stops is what it's all about.
00:14:50Got to get in and out as efficiently as you can.
00:14:52Tire wear may be a problem
00:14:53because they haven't really got any data
00:14:55from the last three days.
00:14:56And, of course, the weather,
00:14:57well, it looks like it's going to be calm
00:14:59as we look at Bernie Eccleston.
00:15:01Late word this morning.
00:15:02Mika Hakkinen has changed the engine
00:15:04in his McLaren Mercedes.
00:15:06Valve problems in the morning warm-up.
00:15:08Don't know if it's the same problem
00:15:09that put them out of the race in Australia,
00:15:11but he is still in the main car.
00:15:13Did not go to the spare,
00:15:14but just changed the engine.
00:15:16So we draw closer to the start of the British Grand Prix.

00:16:16He'll be back in 17th slot on the grid.
00:16:21Michael and Ralph Schumacher
00:16:22sat down a couple weeks ago with Peter Windsor,
00:16:24and we continue the first ever
00:16:26exclusive joint interview
00:16:28with the Schumacher brothers.
00:16:31Is it difficult to unwind between races now?
00:16:34We've got races every two weeks.
00:16:35Is that a major stress,
00:16:37or is it a life you just live
00:16:39from the beginning of the season to the end?
00:16:41Well, I think it's a busy year,
00:16:44especially with all the testing we have in between,
00:16:46because one week we have testing,
00:16:48one week we have racing,
00:16:49and especially overseas races,
00:16:51you know, it's going to be a tight schedule.
00:16:53It's what we like to do,
00:16:55and it's not really a problem.
00:16:57But a summer break would be nice, actually.
00:16:59So how do you unwind after a race?
00:17:02Basically, I go home and do what I enjoy doing,
00:17:06a lot of water sports and whatever.
00:17:09I like to do it at that moment.
00:17:11And do you guys, two guys, hang out a lot between races,
00:17:14if you get the opportunity,
00:17:15if you've both got free days that coincide?
00:17:17I mean, if we're at the same spot, yes, we would do,
00:17:19but he lives in Monaco,
00:17:21I do live in Switzerland,
00:17:23so we have here and there the opportunity where we do so,
00:17:27but it's not like we spend every day together.
00:17:31The thing is, traveling with two kids and five dogs
00:17:33is a bit difficult.
00:17:36He doesn't want to help me.
00:17:38Tell us about the five dogs, Michael.
00:17:40Brazil's actually the home of one of these dogs.
00:17:41Four dogs.
00:17:42Four, okay.
00:17:43It's four dogs, yes.
00:17:44It was always four.
00:17:45Tell us that story about the dog here in Brazil.
00:17:48It's not a big story, honestly.
00:17:50I mean, my wife fell in love with the dog from here.
00:17:53Where was the dog?
00:17:54On the racetrack?
00:17:55Yeah, on the racetrack.
00:17:56They wanted to throw it out,
00:17:57and actually they were quite bad to the dog.
00:18:00They were kicking it, and my wife, she got quite upset,
00:18:03and she took care.
00:18:04I mean, she faded, and he fell in love with her,
00:18:08and it was the typical love story.
00:18:10I mean, he didn't go away from her side anymore,
00:18:14and that was it, and now he's one of our dogs.
00:18:16And he lives happily in Switzerland?
00:18:18He does.
00:18:19Right now he's with my father, but he's quite a happy dog.
00:18:23And what did you call him?
00:18:24He's called Flo.
00:18:26Flo is like a flea because he has so many fleas on himself.
00:18:29When we met him here, obviously the first night,
00:18:32we went to a veterinarian, we cleaned him,
00:18:34we gave all the vaccinations he had to have,
00:18:37and that's why he was called Flea.
00:18:40So you two guys are hanging out, let's say, as an example.
00:18:43How difficult is it not to talk about the things
00:18:45that you know you're not supposed to talk about?
00:18:47It's very easy because we have to talk about it right now again,
00:18:50and, you know, 10 times a day usually.
00:18:54And as soon as we're at home, we enjoy talking about other things.
00:18:58Whatever we want to have for breakfast, for lunch,
00:19:00whatever we want to do during the day,
00:19:02it's no problem at all.
00:19:05But you're way off in the woods together.
00:19:06Surely there's a moment where you want to ask him
00:19:09something about his car or vice versa.
00:19:11Does that not happen?
00:19:13Do you have a line between the two of you?
00:19:15It is naturally sometimes here and there.
00:19:17We talk about what happens in the business sometimes.
00:19:21Yes, it does happen, but...
00:19:23I personally think that's surprisingly rare, basically.
00:19:25Yeah, actually it is.
00:19:26I mean, he is the godfather of my older daughter,
00:19:31and he has to look after this sometimes,
00:19:33which he could do more often, honestly.
00:19:36But, you know, when we are together at home,
00:19:40there is loads of opportunities to do other things.
00:19:42I mean, we do sports, we go training, we go cycling,
00:19:45we play tennis, and recently we went bungee jumping.
00:19:49Yeah.
00:19:50And I was bungee jumping, and he was climbing.
00:19:52You know, we're very sport-active,
00:19:54and this moves us away from the business.
00:19:57So who's the fitter of the two?
00:20:01He.
00:20:04I think, you know, we haven't measured that out.
00:20:07I think we are fit enough for what we are doing,
00:20:09and that's the main point.
00:20:10It doesn't really matter who's the fitter.
00:20:12And do you actually use the same training methods?
00:20:14Do you do the same amount of cardio,
00:20:15the same amount of muscle training?
00:20:17It varies a little bit.
00:20:18I mean, he has his personal trainer, I have a personal trainer.
00:20:21We both started actually this year with this.
00:20:24Basically, the reason why we employed them
00:20:26is that they do our training, and we can step back and relax.
00:20:31As we know with yours.
00:20:33Very much so.
00:20:34But, Michael, you've said in the past that,
00:20:36I think it was two years ago,
00:20:37you maybe weren't quite as fit as you were in the Benetton days, comparing it.
00:20:41I think you related it to getting married,
00:20:43and you were spending a bit more time with the family.
00:20:46You said that last year anyway.
00:20:47Perhaps slightly.
00:20:48Would you look as fit as ever now?
00:20:50I probably did less training, but more efficient, I'd say.
00:20:54Yes, this is probably true.
00:20:56But my numbers, except after the accident,
00:20:59have been always in a certain range,
00:21:03which was always fit enough for what I had to do.
00:21:06This year, I'm pretty exceptionally fit, I have to say,
00:21:09because it's the first time I have this trainer with me,
00:21:11and I really do a lot, and I just made a test before I came here,
00:21:15and that was very positive.
00:21:18I remember you just getting older.
00:21:20Yes, actually, I'm getting older and still getting better.
00:21:23You're both getting older, to some extent.
00:21:26Yes, that's true.
00:21:27You've got a long way to go.
00:21:29Sorry to ask this question, but I have to.
00:21:31Michael was hurt at Silverstone last year.
00:21:33What sort of emotions went through your mind when that happened?
00:21:36Well, actually, for the race,
00:21:38I heard that Michael went off and retired for the race
00:21:41and may have broken his leg.
00:21:42I didn't see the accident itself.
00:21:45Since then, someone from Ferrari came to me.
00:21:49My team told me during the race what happened
00:21:52and that he was flown into the hospital.
00:21:54So straight after the race, obviously, which was a good result for us,
00:21:58but I just went into the hospital.
00:22:01Then it wasn't really nice to see that
00:22:05because when he was there, lying there,
00:22:08nobody was able to help him, really,
00:22:10and that wasn't a very nice experience for me, really.
00:22:13In that moment, you'd rather be there yourself.
00:22:16I mean, it's very strange.
00:22:18That was quite an emotional moment for you, Michael.
00:22:21I think also the time you then spent at home,
00:22:23time you'd never normally spend at home,
00:22:25and you were quoted as saying a few things
00:22:27about a life that you don't normally see very much.
00:22:30I don't know if they were correct quotes or not,
00:22:32but the support from your family and your wife and so forth.
00:22:35Was that true?
00:22:37Was that a time when you were able to rethink a little bit
00:22:39about your priorities of life?
00:22:41Oh, for sure.
00:22:43You know, it's the 10th year I'm doing this kind of job.
00:22:47You get a certain routine, certain things develop in a certain direction,
00:22:51and you never get really a break during the season
00:22:56to maybe see certain things,
00:22:58because there's never time enough for that and change.
00:23:02And during that break, I saw quite a couple of things
00:23:05which I thought, well, I can improve, I can change,
00:23:08I can be more relaxed, and all of these things.
00:23:13And what was it like watching Ralph on TV from back home?
00:23:17It's...
00:23:19It has been...
00:23:21I remember well being here the first year when we came here,
00:23:25for him the first year.
00:23:27The circuit is a very bumpy circuit, a very difficult circuit,
00:23:30and watching him driving made me quite afraid, honestly, in the car,
00:23:34because you see the car moving a lot, you see the car being on the edge,
00:23:38and you know that if you go over the edge,
00:23:40it's going to be possible to have a major accident.
00:23:44Right now, I get used to it, honestly.
00:23:46I mean, I know he obviously does it well,
00:23:48and you get confident in what he's doing,
00:23:51and you simply feel it's normal.
00:23:54One final question.
00:23:55You're both in equal cars, you're both fighting for position.
00:23:59Would you race exactly the same way against your brother
00:24:02as you would against a Micka Hakkinen or a David Coulthard?
00:24:06Ralph?
00:24:07Well, I think we wouldn't need to, because we know each other very good,
00:24:10and we would fight against each other.
00:24:13We did?
00:24:14We did. In Magny-Cours, for example, we did a couple of...
00:24:16Or Söldwig.
00:24:17Söldwig, yeah, we did.
00:24:19Actually, he closed me the door.
00:24:22He nearly crashed into my back.
00:24:24But I think, in a way, we shouldn't say that,
00:24:27because motor racing and all that got so serious now,
00:24:30but I still enjoy doing that, and I think it's the same for him.
00:24:35I mean, you do race with an open mind,
00:24:39and you know who you work with,
00:24:41you know you're not going to expect silly things, bad things.
00:24:44You simply fight, because that's what we enjoy.
00:24:47I mean, we want to fight.
00:24:48We want to really have this situation,
00:24:51and we can deal with ourselves very seriously, on the limit,
00:24:55but enjoying it, really.
00:24:57Thank you very much, both of you.
00:24:59Thank you.
00:25:00An interesting insight into the personality of the Schumacher brothers.
00:25:03Family first, but yet first competitors, like most brothers in racing.
00:25:07There's Bernie Eccleston having a word with outside pole sitter Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:25:14Max Mosley, the FIA president.
00:25:17On the grid here at Silverstone.
00:25:19We'll be back with the starting grid for the British Grand Prix,
00:25:22right after this word.
00:25:34Welcome back to Silverstone, as we close in on the start of the British Grand Prix.
00:25:38You're looking there at Heinz-Harald Frentzen with Mika Hakkinen,
00:25:41there in the second row behind.
00:25:43It is 68 degrees. It's the best day of the whole week.
00:25:46Track temperature is only 74.
00:25:48It's getting away from being chilly.
00:25:50Somewhat humid, but there is little chance of rain.
00:25:53The first time in 16 days, that can be said for this part of Britain.
00:26:00Well, as they get ready to roll off on the formation lap,
00:26:02let's have a look at our Mercedes-Benz starting grid for today's Grand Prix of Britain.
00:26:06Rubens Barrichello has his first pole for Ferrari.
00:26:10And next to him, Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:26:12It looks like his new daughter, Lea, has brought him luck.
00:26:15In row two, Mika Hakkinen not on pole for the first time this year.
00:26:18They had a set-up error that led to understeer,
00:26:21and he got a yellow flag that spoiled his last run.
00:26:23And David Coulthard got caught up in that traffic in the hectic last run.
00:26:27Now in row three, there's Michael Schumacher back in fifth.
00:26:30They made a last-run set-up change that didn't pay off for them.
00:26:33And Jenson Button, very happy to sit next to his idol.
00:26:37Button's teammate, Ralf Schumacher, just several hundredths of a second back,
00:26:41couldn't optimize his last lap.
00:26:43Jos Verstappen's been running well all weekend, very happy with eighth.
00:26:47Eddie Irvine is ninth in the Jaguar, but he's only a tenth of a second out of sixth.
00:26:51Jacques Villeneuve's shown the car has potential,
00:26:53but made his last run a little too early yesterday.
00:26:56Jarno Trulli's Jordan is eleventh.
00:26:58He was held up by traffic on his best run.
00:27:00And so is Fisichella.
00:27:03Thirteenth is Pedro Diniz, and the Salvarou find it hard to find a dry set-up.
00:27:07Johnny Herbert says he's making progress,
00:27:09but he's got to progress forward a lot quicker than this if he's to stay at Jags.
00:27:13John Alessi also.
00:27:14Most of these teams did not have a chance to practice in the dry at all,
00:27:18so as the track got drier, their fortunes failed.
00:27:20He's fifteenth.
00:27:21Ricardo Zonta with understeer is sixteenth.
00:27:24Nick Heitfeld had to qualify the spare Prost.
00:27:26He is seventeenth.
00:27:27Mika Salo just totally frustrated in eighteenth.
00:27:30Pedro de la Rosa made one mistake on his driest lap, his last lap,
00:27:35and it cost him.
00:27:36He's nineteenth.
00:27:37Alexander Virts cautions on his last run and having to qualify the spare,
00:27:41put him twentieth.
00:27:42And there are the minorities for Jeanne and Matsukane.
00:27:45Both feel they're making progress with the minority,
00:27:47but the variable weather conditions caught them out as well.
00:27:55The British Grand Prix has seen eleven Ferrari victories
00:27:58and ten each for McLaren and Williams.
00:28:00This is the fifty-first British Grand Prix.
00:28:04Only Italy has a similar record of holding a Formula One race
00:28:07every year since the series started.
00:28:10They were always pretty well at Monza as well,
00:28:13whereas these have been at five British circuits.
00:28:20Well, it's a very, very special moment for Rubens Barrichello, of course,
00:28:24and for Heinz Hauer-Frentzen having the stars, as it were, behind them.
00:28:28But for Rubens, it's a vital moment for him to get off that line.
00:28:31Remember, the first corner is a right-hander.
00:28:33It's a very fast right-hander, but he will have to brake for it.
00:28:36He'll be having a lot of speed when he gets there,
00:28:38but my goodness, he's got to get a clean start.
00:28:40And remember, supposedly nobody has this traction control,
00:28:43so we'll see how they go.
00:28:45Villeneuve, Denis and Salo on the soft tires.
00:28:49Everyone else on the harder Bridgestone dry tires.
00:28:51Very little dry practice.
00:29:01Schumacher to the outside, making a bid.
00:29:12They are four wide in the straightaway, and his ball cannot get through.
00:29:15May have lost a spot, maybe two.
00:29:18Yes, he was right out there on the grass beside Mika Hakkinen,
00:29:21but Mika quite naturally moved across on him, and I don't blame him at all.
00:29:24But look at Rubens and the Jordan pulling out in front there,
00:29:27the two McLarens pretty close behind.
00:29:30Michael Well caught out there as they head down the straight.
00:29:34Both the Williams appear to have gotten past,
00:29:36and Schumacher is back in seventh just ahead of Jarno Trulli's Jordan.
00:29:40There's Trulli looking.
00:29:43Michael having a go down the inside.
00:29:45Is he going to get past? We don't know.
00:29:48Yes, he did get past.
00:29:50That was a good overtaking maneuver coming down there into Stowe,
00:29:52which of course is where he had his incident last year.
00:29:54And he's repassed.
00:29:56He had to give the spot back, Derek.
00:29:58Oh, he did indeed.
00:29:59Oh my goodness gracious.
00:30:01Yes, that was the obviously lost momentum.
00:30:03He's having another go, and of course he's on the inside as he comes through there,
00:30:06but he's going to be on the outside for the next bit of braking.
00:30:08Is he going to make it?
00:30:10I can't believe this.
00:30:12They're really pushing each other around.
00:30:15He's still going down the inside.
00:30:17He's desperate to keep with that leading group,
00:30:19because if he gets held up in a slow group,
00:30:21he is in trouble as they go through the complex.
00:30:23And for the second race in a row,
00:30:25Villeneuve has made a masterful start,
00:30:27coming from 10th to 6th off the grid.
00:30:31He must have gone to the Don Prudhomme School.
00:30:33I mean, just fantastic off the start.
00:30:41So it's Barrichello and Frentzen,
00:30:43then the two McLaren.
00:30:47Jensen Button up for 5th, ahead of Villeneuve.
00:30:50And it's Michael Schumacher battling his brother, Ralph,
00:30:53just as they were talking to Peter Windsor about in the interview.
00:30:56There they were, battling through most of that first lap,
00:30:58side by side for position.
00:31:00Yes, I guess that's why neither went off,
00:31:02because it was brotherly love.
00:31:04One could only hope.
00:31:06What a start.
00:31:07What a fantastic start for Villeneuve yet again.
00:31:10Outstanding.
00:31:11With these two having a dice down the inside,
00:31:13who's going to give room?
00:31:14Whoops, does he go?
00:31:15Yes, he slips down the inside.
00:31:17Good bit of overtaking there.
00:31:23On board with 2nd place, Frentzen.
00:31:53The jaw went out a bit too wide on that corner,
00:31:59and that's just what you mustn't do
00:32:01as you come out of Luffield,
00:32:03out of Brooklands, into Luffield.
00:32:06Couldn't see his mirrors, Derek,
00:32:07but was he protecting 2nd place?
00:32:09That McLaren was right up under his rear wing.
00:32:11I felt that he made a bit of a mistake going in there,
00:32:13and that's why the McLaren behind him.
00:32:15But you might be right, Mike.
00:32:16We're not driving, so we don't know.
00:32:24One thing's for sure,
00:32:25Ralf Schumacher's not going to...
00:32:27Huff has smoked it from one of the Jordans.
00:32:29One thing's for sure,
00:32:30Ralf Schumacher is not going to hang back
00:32:32when you consider his teammate, Jenson Button,
00:32:34and his first British Grand Prix
00:32:36and his 4th Grand Prix of his life
00:32:38is well ahead of him.
00:32:40Yeah, Ralf and Villeneuve have been caught up in a bit of it.
00:32:49Ralf back just ahead of Michael.
00:32:51Ralf back just ahead of Michael.
00:32:52Jas Verstappen having a fine couple of early laps there in 9th.
00:33:04Jarno Trulli at 10th,
00:33:05Fisichella 11th,
00:33:06Eddie Irvine started 9th,
00:33:09slipped back to 12th on the start.
00:33:11It's going to be not going to be easy
00:33:12for Michael Schumacher to overtake Jacques Villeneuve.
00:33:16We saw Jacques manage to do a fine job
00:33:18at the last Grand Prix,
00:33:19not holding a group up,
00:33:20but certainly fending his position admirably
00:33:23for a long time.
00:33:24And Michael Schumacher does not need that right now
00:33:27because in front of him, obviously,
00:33:28he's got Villeneuve, then Ralf Schumacher,
00:33:30and then, of course, Jenson Button.
00:33:34Tip of the hat to Eddie Jordan
00:33:36celebrating that 150th Grand Prix start today.
00:33:39That may not seem like much of a milestone,
00:33:42but if you read back
00:33:43through the history of Jordan Grand Prix
00:33:45and how the team was nearly bankrupt,
00:33:47nearly had to fold up
00:33:48not once, but a couple of times.
00:33:49Here, look at the start.
00:33:50Look at Schumacher.
00:33:53Zoom passing.
00:33:54Boy, they hit wheels, didn't they?
00:33:55They did hit wheels,
00:33:56and he very wisely, or had no option,
00:33:59but to back out of it.
00:34:00And, of course, that let Villeneuve
00:34:02and his brother through.
00:34:08Oh, it is very, very fast, that start, isn't it?
00:34:10Up into that first turn.
00:34:11Here we go.
00:34:12Super start by Rubens Barrichello.
00:34:13Schumacher pulls.
00:34:14That gets on the grass.
00:34:15But, of course, he isn't going to get
00:34:16the sort of traction he wants out there
00:34:17because it's got to be a little bit moist
00:34:19after all the rains we've had.
00:34:21That was a great move by Villeneuve,
00:34:23slicing from the right side of the grid.
00:34:25Look at the white car
00:34:26on the right side of your screen.
00:34:27Look at him accelerate,
00:34:28go all the way to the left edge,
00:34:30and then when everybody packs up
00:34:32at the inside of the corner,
00:34:33he just shoots right around.
00:34:35And then around Schumacher as well.
00:34:37Outstanding.
00:34:39Not actually that good a start
00:34:41from Heinz Auerfremsen,
00:34:43but it's pretty good in my book, nonetheless.
00:34:45And this corner course is very, very fast.
00:34:47Nice, clean start.
00:34:48And this is riding with David Coulthard at the start.
00:34:54David's holding off Hakanen at this point.
00:34:57David being careful that he doesn't slide across
00:34:59and take somebody out with him.
00:35:03And our thanks to the British director.
00:35:05That's probably the finest replay sequence
00:35:07we've seen in the last couple seasons of the start.
00:35:09Yeah, that was superb, wasn't it?
00:35:12A great day for Williams,
00:35:14running 5th and 6th,
00:35:16behind a Ferrari, a Jordan,
00:35:18and two McLarens.
00:35:21Yeah!
00:35:39Another replay
00:35:41of the infighting
00:35:43going on.
00:35:46That was Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher, of course,
00:35:48as they come down into Stowe on that first lap.
00:35:52An outstanding start by Jacques Villeneuve.
00:35:57Well, the front six cars begin
00:35:59to try and streak away.
00:36:01Front-row starters running right where they began,
00:36:03and from there, the field a little bit jumbled up.
00:36:05You're watching Formula 1 on Fox Sportsnet.
00:36:11Back to the British Grand Prix,
00:36:12Mike Choi with Derek Bell and Peter Windsor.
00:36:15The front-row starters running one, two,
00:36:17Barrichello and Frentzen again
00:36:19with that rather unusual line.
00:36:22In that one corner, great start for the Williams,
00:36:24as Jensen Button,
00:36:26who is the sensation of the weekend,
00:36:28has started 6th, running 5th,
00:36:30behind the two McLarens,
00:36:32and his teammate Ralf Schumacher right with him.
00:36:34Meanwhile, Jacques Villeneuve
00:36:36has fallen back into the clutches
00:36:38of Michael Schumacher.
00:36:40They are running a bit behind this lead pack.
00:36:43Passes that to Heinz Frentzen,
00:36:45but Schumacher
00:36:47actually falling back quite a lot.
00:36:49I don't think he had any particular contact
00:36:51with Hacken at the start,
00:36:53because they seemed to glance off one another.
00:36:55But there's the leading group of 6th,
00:36:57and some ways back,
00:36:59you're going to see Villeneuve come out
00:37:01the whole length of Abbey,
00:37:03and there's Schumacher behind him.
00:37:05Doesn't seem to be able to get close enough to him,
00:37:07and doesn't seem to use the toe.
00:37:09Here we come down the straight,
00:37:12to get any extra speed down the straight,
00:37:14which I find rather unusual,
00:37:16unless he's having an overheating problem,
00:37:18which again, I would find unusual.
00:37:20Now they've dropped some 6 seconds back
00:37:22from the lead pack, that's Jos Verstappen,
00:37:24in the arrows right with them.
00:37:26Remember that the whole weekend
00:37:28has been wet or damp,
00:37:30and today is really the first dry day
00:37:32at Silverstone in some time.
00:37:34So set-ups with a lot of guesswork,
00:37:36the Saubers on the soft tire,
00:37:38and also Jacques Villeneuve
00:37:40reported on the soft compound Bridgestone,
00:37:42everyone else on the harder compound.
00:37:44Having said that,
00:37:46of course we've had bad conditions,
00:37:48they all had a 4-day test here,
00:37:50immediately following Imola,
00:37:52so they've all got a fair number of miles here.
00:37:54Minardi were the only team
00:37:56who were on a very limited budget
00:37:58not to come to that test,
00:38:00hence they are now at the back of the grid.
00:38:02Jarno truly closing up on that battle,
00:38:04and it's 11 and a half seconds
00:38:06from Barrichello, the leader,
00:38:08back to Michael Schumacher,
00:38:10in 8th, Verstappen 9th,
00:38:12Jarno truly's Jordan is 10th,
00:38:14Fisichella's Benetton 11th,
00:38:16Eddie Irvine's Jaguar 12th,
00:38:18Nico Salo and Jean Alessi,
00:38:20Wurz, Zonta, Della Rosa,
00:38:22Johnny Herbert.
00:38:28David Coulthard lowers the standard
00:38:30for fast lap.
00:38:32They'll continue to come down
00:38:34as fuel loads lighten.
00:38:36Look at that strain between them
00:38:38and Jack Villeneuve.
00:38:40Again, you see Michael
00:38:42keeping out of the tow,
00:38:44which I find unusual, unless he, as I said,
00:38:46does have a slight overheating problem.
00:38:48Look at the group behind.
00:38:50They are very close together as well.
00:38:52A lot of wind turbulence back there.
00:38:56Back to the front.
00:38:58A Ferrari, a Jordan,
00:39:00two McLarens and the two Williams
00:39:02set the pace here in the British Grand Prix.
00:39:06This is through the complex
00:39:08just before the pits.
00:39:30Great in-car stuff there
00:39:32from Heinz Auer Frenzel
00:39:34as they go through the complex
00:39:36of Ferrari, Brooklands and Nuffield
00:39:38and down the pits straight away.
00:39:40Derek, does it look like Frenzel
00:39:42from the in-car
00:39:44has got a lot of understeer coming into the corner
00:39:46and looks like he's troubled
00:39:48with the power oversteer coming out.
00:39:50Well, I think inevitably you're going to have a power oversteer.
00:39:52You always try to set the car up
00:39:54with a certain amount of understeer.
00:39:56Having not driven one of these current Formula 1 cars,
00:39:58I don't know what the balance goes like
00:40:00with a full tank load,
00:40:02but they would certainly get us
00:40:04go for a bit of understeer if they could.
00:40:06Jenson Button got fastest lap.
00:40:08It's quite amazing, this young man.
00:40:10A very calm, cool, collected young driver.
00:40:12I don't think we just realized what it is
00:40:14for somebody out of the blue to come in
00:40:16when you think that Alex Zanardi, that we rated so highly,
00:40:18could do nothing at Williams last year.
00:40:20Here is Button actually
00:40:22out-qualifying Ralf Schumacher,
00:40:24albeit his teammate, albeit by about
00:40:26two hundredths of a second, but there he is,
00:40:28ahead of him in the race and getting fastest lap.
00:40:30Frank Williams addressed that topic this week
00:40:32when he said that we didn't get the best
00:40:34out of Zanardi and we certainly did not
00:40:36give him the best Grand Prix car
00:40:38in which to showcase his skills,
00:40:40but this year's Williams with the BMW?
00:40:42Far better.
00:40:44Here we're with Coulthard in third.
00:41:00Coulthard,
00:41:02Coulthard,
00:41:04Coulthard,
00:41:06Coulthard,
00:41:08Coulthard,
00:41:10Coulthard,
00:41:12Coulthard,
00:41:14Coulthard,
00:41:16Coulthard,
00:41:18Coulthard,
00:41:20Coulthard,
00:41:22Coulthard,
00:41:24Coulthard,
00:41:26Coulthard,
00:41:28Coulthard,
00:41:30Coulthard,
00:41:32Coulthard,
00:41:34Coulthard,
00:41:36Coulthard,
00:41:38Coulthard,
00:41:40Coulthard,
00:41:42Coulthard,
00:41:44Coulthard,
00:41:46Coulthard,
00:41:48Coulthard,
00:41:50Coulthard,
00:41:52Coulthard,
00:41:54Coulthard,
00:41:56Coulthard,
00:41:58Coulthard,
00:42:00Coulthard,
00:42:02Coulthard,
00:42:04Coulthard,
00:42:06Coulthard,
00:42:08Coulthard,
00:42:10Coulthard,
00:42:12Coulthard,
00:42:14Coulthard,
00:42:16Coulthard,
00:42:18Coulthard,
00:42:20Coulthard,
00:42:22Coulthard,
00:42:24Of course, if you've got a car with a bit of understeer, this little push, there's nothing much you can do about that.
00:42:28Either you back off, or else you just persevere with it.
00:42:30But ultimately, it means he's going to destroy his front tires.
00:42:35I look at the career of Rubens Barrichello, looking...
00:42:38Where does that saying come from, uh, break his duck?
00:42:41In England, yeah, but I don't think you'd understand that over here.
00:42:44No, but that's what they've called it in the British press all week.
00:42:48But, Barrichello, this is a great spot for him to break his duck and score his first Grand Prix victory.
00:42:54And don't ask me where the originality of duck comes from.
00:42:57It is D-U-C-K, but I don't know how it comes.
00:43:00We use it in cricket more than anything.
00:43:03Which, of course, is slightly opposite to this sport.
00:43:09Look at this group there, really, but nobody having a go at anybody.
00:43:13It's an awful thing to say.
00:43:14We're not quite sure about their fuel strategy, having had such diabolical conditions all weekend.
00:43:19But I think they anticipated the bad weather when they were testing here last week.
00:43:23So they've already sort of got their fuel consumption figures together from the test last week as we ride with full time.
00:43:46Down to a 65 mile an hour third gear corner.
00:43:50Accelerating up to 120.
00:43:52And then out onto the straight and up to 190 miles an hour, right at the end of this pit straightaway.
00:44:01It's a fifth gear corner as they work their way through Copse.
00:44:04Very critical corner.
00:44:05That's where Jacques Villeneuve tried to take it flat last year and found himself in the wall.
00:44:08He said, I only tried to take it flat.
00:44:10It wasn't to be taken flat.
00:44:12Rather like he tried to take Eau Rouge at Spa flat last year as well.
00:44:20So Barrichello, the pole sitter on Ferrari, leads.
00:44:24Frentzen's Jordan, the two McLarens, and the two Williams after 11 laps.
00:44:29You're watching Formula One on Fox Sportsnet.
00:44:33Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage of the Grand Prix of Britain from Silverstone.
00:44:37Here's Rubens Barrichello.
00:44:39On point, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, David Coulthard, and Mika Hakkinen.
00:44:44Nightly at 10 and 12, the all new National Sports Report.
00:44:47The news show that gives you the complete wrap-up of the day in sports from a fresh perspective.
00:44:52The National Sports Report, nightly at 10 and 12, and only on Fox Sportsnet.
00:44:58Jenson Button, of course, sitting there behind Mika Hakkinen,
00:45:01is getting a great lesson behind the two-time world champion.
00:45:04And it must be intriguing for him just to see how Hakkinen drives during a race and just how he adapts.
00:45:10Because in other races, of course, Jenson's been either working his way forward or working his way back.
00:45:14Here he is learning a lot about it.
00:45:17Still, one assumes, holding up Michael Schumacher,
00:45:19although Michael doesn't seem to be doing too much about trying to get by him.
00:45:23We're talking just now about fuel strategy.
00:45:26You would think that they'd be on a two-stop strategy,
00:45:28but at this point, of course, you'd think that the Ferrari must be considering bringing in Schumacher,
00:45:33Michael Schumacher, as soon as they can, so that they can have a clean bit of track.
00:45:37That is assuming that his car is running all right,
00:45:39but he doesn't seem to be doing much about Jacques,
00:45:41and he doesn't seem that close at all to putting any sort of attack.
00:45:45Well, he did have a pretty good bump with Mika Hakkinen on the run to turn one from the start.
00:45:51We can only speculate whether it might have thrown one end or the other of the car out of alignment,
00:45:57or whether just Schumacher's in a position where that Villeneuve's car is fast enough,
00:46:01and there's so few passing opportunities here at Silverstone,
00:46:04that he's unable to make the position on Villeneuve,
00:46:07and is going to run in that position until that first stop.
00:46:10Well, I think I read somewhere that the Honda engine is exceptionally powerful.
00:46:14They have a new iteration of it yet again, here at Silverstone,
00:46:18and it's certainly a great drag race motor.
00:46:21And here is Alex Wurtz.
00:46:25Coming pitside, and he will surrender 12th place. Excuse me.
00:46:29Yeah, he was 12th, but he qualified 19th.
00:46:32Not at all happy man there, in this, of course, new Benetton or the Renault team,
00:46:37as it's going to be called next year.
00:46:40He obviously wasn't happy with his tyres set up,
00:46:42so they bring him in very early to do something in those.
00:46:46Maybe also to get him on a clean bit of track.
00:46:48But he might have had to put an extra bit of fuel in there to see him through.
00:46:52Remember, now he will have started the race on a heavy load of fuel,
00:46:54and he's again got heavy fuel now.
00:46:59Which isn't an ideal way to go racing full tanks all the time.
00:47:02But sometimes you have to do it if you have a problem.
00:47:04And I'm correct, Wurtz was in 15th position at the time of his stop.
00:47:08Petty Irvine's up there in 12th, remains in 12th.
00:47:17Well, and I think too, not just from the Ferrari end,
00:47:21but Jordan, in many of the races over the last year or two,
00:47:28have where possible run a one-stop strategy.
00:47:31And the Jordans, aside from the Benettons,
00:47:34the Jordans have often been the last team to pit.
00:47:39I'm not sure, with the speeds they're running,
00:47:42I would doubt that they had an exceptionally full load of fuel on any of those leading cars.
00:47:47I mean, Hakkinen could have done, for example,
00:47:49because he was further back on the grid, they might have said,
00:47:51Oh, Miike, you're going to go for a one-stop strategy.
00:47:54But I have a feeling those guys at the front,
00:47:56they wouldn't want to run with heavy fuel and just give up that front position
00:48:00as one of the Saubers comes in.
00:48:01Salo comes in for some fuel and tyres.
00:48:04Salo being outrun all weekend by his teammate, Pedro Denise.
00:48:08And this morning, Salo was slowest, with only a few laps in warm-up,
00:48:12whereas Denise was 12th.
00:48:20Very frustrating 80th Grand Prix for Miike Salo, thus far.
00:48:27And now the lead has really tightened.
00:48:31Well, it always looks tight through there, Miike.
00:48:33You were going into these statistics last race,
00:48:35and I haven't got a clue what you're talking about.
00:48:37But it always seems to tighten up in the tight corners.
00:48:40We had some emails on this fact, which is very interesting.
00:48:43But now you can see it opening up again as they get to the speed.
00:48:46I think what we're trying to point out, Derek, is that in the slow corners,
00:48:50the distance from one car to another is less because the speed is lowering,
00:48:54yet the time differential between those cars is pretty much the same as what we see here.
00:48:59What's different is the speed.
00:49:03Thanks for entertaining watching, nonetheless.
00:49:09Michael Schumacher still running behind Jacques Villeneuve.
00:49:17In a way, Jacques is the last person, probably apart from Miike Haakon and Coulthard,
00:49:21that he needs to be behind at the start of this race,
00:49:23because there's going to be no holds barred when it comes to any overtaking going on.
00:49:30That's the McLaren control room.
00:49:43Jacques Villeneuve, 11 victories in 68 starts.
00:49:48And interesting is, here in Britain, they're running the non-tobacco liveries on these cars.
00:49:54Get a look at the rear wing, the next VAR you see,
00:49:58and see if that's just a different way of reminding people that that's the lucky strike car,
00:50:04or see if it's maybe just a little bit of a backhand against the powers that be in Formula 1
00:50:09that last year refused the VAR team permission to run their two cars in different paint schemes.
00:50:17I must sort of point out that I think Jacques Villeneuve has the record for winning four Grand Prixs
00:50:23in his first Grand Prix season.
00:50:25Quite an outstanding record that was, with the Williams team, of course,
00:50:28on his first year over here from Indianapolis, from IndyCarRacing.
00:50:35Shall I say kart?
00:50:38Now, Jacques had the opportunity to race at Long Beach,
00:50:41sit in for Patie and turn it down.
00:50:44To come to Long Beach and run last weekend.
00:50:48He's had a lot of activity going on behind the scenes for Jacques Villeneuve.
00:50:52One of his managers, I didn't know that he had more than one,
00:50:55but one of his managers has been talking behind the scenes to Ron Dennis
00:50:58about possibly driving for McLaren next year.
00:51:01And there's also this strong possibility of David Coulthard going to Jaguars for next year.
00:51:07The other thing, of course, is Will Juan Montoya,
00:51:10who does so well over in the United States in kart.
00:51:13Will he come over and follow up his contract with Williams?
00:51:16Or will Williams say no?
00:51:17I think my Jenson Button daddy's doing rather well, thank you very much.
00:51:21Well, he certainly is today, Button, in fifth place.
00:51:25Really slow as they turn into that tight left-hander.
00:51:30And here they are working their way out on the last corner,
00:51:33up through Luffield, through Wicker and onto the pit straight.
00:51:41Up to 190 miles an hour.
00:51:45Down a gear.
00:51:47Through Copse.
00:51:49Back up a gear, up to 170 miles an hour.
00:51:53Braking through the left-hander into the right.
00:51:57Down to fourth gear.
00:52:02And they're working their way onto Stowe, down to Stowe, down Hanger Street.
00:52:11195 miles again as they reach the bottom of Stowe.
00:52:23It's Busy Keller in the pits.
00:52:30Not happy with his car, he's complaining about something at the front,
00:52:33but they say there's nothing wrong unless they had something loose
00:52:38and they couldn't find it only comes loose when it's at high speed, of course.
00:52:40There is always that possibility.
00:52:42I've had that a few times in my career.
00:52:45You come and find absolutely nothing wrong,
00:52:47but when you get up to 180 miles an hour, there's this terrible vibration.
00:52:52And that is Busy Keller's first stop.
00:52:54They had tried to call him in earlier,
00:52:57and he decided to ride with the problem for several more laps,
00:52:59and just now made that stop.
00:53:01So, both the Benetons have been in, along with Mika Salo.
00:53:09So, we'll be back in a bit, and perhaps expect the first round of pit stops,
00:53:14with Rubens Barrichello leading from the pole in the Grand Prix of Britain on Fox Sportsnet.
00:53:21Back to our Fox Sportsnet coverage of the Grand Prix of Britain.
00:53:24Rubens Barrichello continuing to lead.
00:53:27And that's Joss Verstappen rolling very slowly, but he's moving fast.
00:53:31Perhaps Mika Hakkinen can resume his winning ways in the Grand Prix of Spain in two weeks' time.
00:53:36He's the defending champion, and you'll see it here on Fox Sportsnet Sunday, May 7th,
00:53:4110 a.m. your local time on most of our affiliates.
00:53:46It's amazing in this day of high technology that we have all this trick stuff,
00:53:50and here we have the old pitbulls hung out in the end of somebody's arms.
00:53:52They've been since the 1920s. It's quite astonishing, really.
00:53:57Let's talk a little bit about...
00:53:59Mika Hakkinen had a problem with his pneumatic valve system this morning.
00:54:02They changed the engine in one of their 45-minute stints, as they do at McLaren.
00:54:06He seems to maybe have another problem, although I wouldn't say the fact that he's hanging in there
00:54:10maximum revs is much of a problem, but they say there is possibly a problem with his engine yet again.
00:54:16He is fourth in line there, just dropping back a little bit away from teammate David Coulthard.
00:54:21And here is the battle for seventh.
00:54:23Jacques Villeneuve's BAR.
00:54:2521 seconds between Barrichello and Michael Schumacher.
00:54:29That is one pit stop.
00:54:30Ooh, Jacques locked it all up a bit as he went in there.
00:54:32He obviously goes in on the brakes very deep, and one just snagged on him.
00:54:35Must point out that Mika Hakkinen has never actually won at this race.
00:54:38He led it in 97, 98, 99, but he's never won it.
00:54:44This is Verstappen, who was running a very credible ninth,
00:54:50but the car slowed quite a bit and comes into the pits at lap 22.
00:54:56Matsukane is in for Minardi.
00:55:01It's around the time the two stoppers will be doing their first stop,
00:55:05so one will anticipate quite a lot of activity in the pit lane.
00:55:08They are actually straight, and I don't know if we'll get it from this shot,
00:55:11the pit entrance used to go to the left of your screen, around that little chicane.
00:55:15Now they come straight in, which means they come in a heck of a lot faster,
00:55:18slow down a lot more for this 48 mile an hour speed limit down the pit lane,
00:55:23and then go out the other end, so it's actually quite a quick entry and exit.
00:55:27Now it looks like Verstappen's car is going to be pushed backwards into the garage.
00:55:30Speaking of exit, and he had a great qualifying and a fine race,
00:55:34running in ninth place until something happened with the aero.
00:55:37He's been running well all weekend.
00:55:39What a moment though, or what a time this is here.
00:55:42Fastest lap for Mika Hakkinen, can't be too much wrong with his pneumatic valve system.
00:55:45Remember they actually do 124s in the warm, dry conditions on low tanks,
00:55:51so they're still way off the pace at this present time.
00:55:54But how brilliant it is for Rubens Barrichello up front there,
00:55:57to be leading the British Grand Prix, really more his home probably than Brazil,
00:56:01having been over here in Formula 3, and of course in Formula 3000,
00:56:06and then driving early days with Jordan.
00:56:09His first Formula 1 drive was in fact with Jordan, back in 93, in the Jordan Heart.
00:56:15And then he stayed with Jordan for four years, then he had 97 and 98 and 99 with Jackie Stewart,
00:56:20and then got taken by Ferrari.
00:56:22So what a wonderful moment for him, a wonderful time for him here at the British Grand Prix,
00:56:27in front of probably his second home crowd.
00:56:29Well, it's interesting how you point out that Eddie Jordan has really had quite a hand
00:56:33in the development of many, many Formula 1 drivers.
00:56:37Oh, a tremendous amount. I mean, he brought on many, many drivers over the years.
00:56:42Obviously the reason being is that Eddie sees the talent out there,
00:56:45and he knows that they've got money.
00:56:47And so Eddie goes in there diving for the money to try and get sponsorship to run his teams.
00:56:51That was the early days, and you heard him say earlier on that in 92 he was just about bankrupt.
00:56:56We all know that.
00:56:57Well, what an amazing person Eddie is, a survivor.
00:56:59Really very much in the Frank Williams mold, I have to admit,
00:57:02because Frank was just the same way back in the 70s when I drove him a few times,
00:57:07even in Formula 1, can you believe?
00:57:09But Frank was just the same as Eddie Jordan, a real wheeler dealer, an entrepreneur,
00:57:13and of course comes out on top.
00:57:15They say that there's a very fine line between genius and foolishness.
00:57:19And in the off-season, folks thought Frank Williams was rather foolish
00:57:23for signing a young 20-year-old with only two years in full-sized autos worth of experience,
00:57:30that being Jensen Button.
00:57:31Well, now that line seems to be edging toward genius,
00:57:35as Button has a fine fifth-place drive thus far today.
00:57:39Giannulli is in, and Pedro de la Rosa just in front of him for arrows.
00:57:44And there's Marc Genet.
00:57:50He hasn't got traction control on the Minardi.
00:58:00He certainly went out there.
00:58:03But of course, the speed line goes a little bit further than I think I'm right in saying.
00:58:09Off they go now.
00:58:11There they are.
00:58:12Long stop for de la Rosa.
00:58:14There's the exits.
00:58:18Off the track, they're down to 60, 48 miles an hour.
00:58:22All the way down.
00:58:24And Ralph Schumacher is in as well as this man, Heinz-Harald Frenz.
00:58:30Now we'll see what happens after these stops and just what's happening in the McLaren pit.
00:58:33Can they do something really clever?
00:58:35Ooh, looks like a bit of adjustment going on there on the front of Ralph's car.
00:58:40Oh, that's costly.
00:58:42Frenzen had a very quick stop, and what looked, Derek, like quite a light load of fuel going into Frenzen.
00:58:47Yes, it did look light, one has to say.
00:58:49But then you don't know whether Ralph Schumacher actually got his, they got the fuel filler on correctly.
00:58:59Ferraris may well have a different type of fuel mixture settings this weekend,
00:59:02which allows them to run a bit further on the fuel, with more economy in other words.
00:59:07Which is quite something when Ferraris used to be the thirstiest car in the race.
00:59:13And this lap, Williams setting up for Jensen Button.
00:59:16Here's Nick Heidfeld.
00:59:18Yes, he's having a longer race than usual.
00:59:20For all Nick's back there, he was Formula 3 champion, Formula 3000 champion last year,
00:59:24in the same mold as Jensen Button in effect, but he got sided into the Prost team,
00:59:30and now for sale for a reputed $200 million or something astronomical.
00:59:36I don't think I'd want to buy the Prost team right now, we wouldn't have an engine,
00:59:38because Peugeot don't like the deal either.
00:59:43And Jensen Button will be in this time.
00:59:45What a wonderful race, what a wonderful weekend he's had in his first British Grand Prix.
00:59:51Yes, he's had his helmet painted in a different format this weekend,
00:59:55to launch his new clothesline that he has launched at the age of 20.
00:59:59The Brits seem to be buying it.
01:00:01May as well have a go while he can.
01:00:10Good stop.
01:00:14And you've got to keep that speed down.
01:00:16Fuel filler cap is still up, red light is still on,
01:00:18till he crosses the line as he goes out the pits,
01:00:20and then wow, it all closes down and off he can go.
01:00:24So that leaves Rubens Barrichello leading the two McLarens.
01:00:29David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen.
01:00:33And there hasn't been much change in the gap between these three.
01:00:36Well, because of the aerodynamics, they can't get close enough, is what I'm led to believe.
01:00:40They close up, of course, under the corners, under braking.
01:00:43But of course, Steve Hallam, who is the strategist, along with Ron Dennis at McLaren,
01:00:49trying to work out the numbers and see just the best way to handle this situation,
01:00:52or will they just leave one out until the Ferrari comes and hope to get a better pit stop.
01:00:59The problem is right now that the two McLarens cannot get a really quick lap in behind the Ferrari
01:01:04to capitalize on the fact that when they go in, they don't come out still behind the Ferrari.
01:01:11They've got to get some quick laps in now, some quick laps after pit stop,
01:01:14and hopefully we'll be ahead of Rubens Barrichello.
01:01:17But Rubens has got to do the same.
01:01:20And it leaves Ferrari kind of in the position of running this waiting game of who will stop first.
01:01:25As long as he can keep the McLarens behind him, why not leave Barrichello out there?
01:01:28Well, in another five laps, they'll be halfway through the race,
01:01:30and therefore they'll only do a one-stop strategy.
01:01:36When they're up to lap 30, they'll be at the halfway distance.
01:01:41And I guess the tyres are standing up remarkably well.
01:01:43Remember, we'll have Michelin in next year, supporting many of the teams,
01:01:48which will open up a lot more intrigue and interest.
01:01:52Eddie Irvine coming in for his fuel stop.
01:01:59Eddie, of course, a leading British name in Formula 1 at this time,
01:02:03but Jenson Button, or Button Mania, has actually been overcoming him somewhat.
01:02:08And he's not sort of... The news isn't full of Eddie anymore, it's full of Jenson Button.
01:02:13And you have to admit, a young man in only his fourth Grand Prix,
01:02:17lying in fourth and fifth place, is doing a stirring job.
01:02:20Wonderful. We also saw Pedro Diniz in.
01:02:24So now everyone has made their stops except Johnny Herbert, Jarno Trulli,
01:02:29the two Ferraris and the two McLarens.
01:02:34So we'll be back after this word and see Ferrari and McLaren pit stops from Britain.
01:02:39Pedro de la Rosa has just pulled his arrows off at the pit lane and off the course.
01:02:45That puts both arrows out of the race.
01:02:47And this is the first BAR pit stop.
01:02:50It's Riccardo Zonta who has just set the fastest lap of the race at a minute 27.6.
01:02:56That's amazing.
01:03:00So 12.7 second stop means he should have gotten a full load of fuel.
01:03:06As we close in on halfway.
01:03:08So his teammate, Jacques Villeneuve, has not pitted.
01:03:11Jarno Trulli's Jordan. Neither McLaren nor Ferrari have been in the pit lane.
01:03:20So,
01:03:30Derek, as long as Barrichello can keep the McLarens at bay,
01:03:34does it make sense for Ross Brawn just to leave him out there as long as he can hold them back?
01:03:39Oh, he just needs to stay out as long as he possibly can.
01:03:41And if he's got this, they obviously can't overtake him instead of had a go before.
01:03:46Well, as long as he's out there, remember, once you come in for fuel,
01:03:50sorry, start again, the longer you can stay out,
01:03:52the smaller amount of fuel you have to put in there for the less amount of time you spend in the pit lane.
01:03:56So as we ride with David Coulthard, this is obviously what Ferrari and McLaren are thinking about.
01:04:16This is the complex just before the pits.
01:04:26What's amazing is you really see them get the tail out.
01:04:29I mean, they just point the car into the corner.
01:04:31They do get pushed, they get the understeer without any doubt,
01:04:34but they don't seem to get the oversteer that one would imagine.
01:04:38And we come to halfway without a pit stop by either Ferrari or McLaren, or Trulli or Villeneuve.
01:04:53This is where the change of direction is immense on your body, on the neck.
01:04:57Very hard couple of three corners.
01:04:59Left, right, left, right, left.
01:05:02And there's Villeneuve ahead of Michael Schumacher, and Garno Trulli.
01:05:17DC just got by a Rubens Barry Kellogg.
01:05:20Suddenly, just suddenly, you find David Coulthard in front of the Ferrari.
01:05:24Not what the doctor ordered, as far as Ferrari is concerned,
01:05:28but just what David wanted, because now David can make the break
01:05:32and maybe get ahead of Mika Hakkinen, who's obviously going to want to have a go.
01:05:36Hark up the crowd as they see DC go through and takes the lead.
01:05:39Now, will this be the time to bring Rubens Barry Kellogg in?
01:05:42David Coulthard, but here we go.
01:05:44Here's the move.
01:05:45Right up, close up behind him, zap down the inside,
01:05:48and actually goes round the outside of Rubens going into...
01:05:52Oh, dear, dear, dear.
01:05:54Good, good move.
01:05:57Very fine move there by David Coulthard.
01:05:59Well, if he can get away from Rubens now, do you pit David or leave him out?
01:06:04I've just watched this overtaking maneuver, and Rubens,
01:06:07whoa, round the outside.
01:06:09That didn't work too well for you, Rubens.
01:06:11You didn't block him out the way you intended to,
01:06:13and in fact, he lost far too much time because he was on the wrong line
01:06:16as he went through.
01:06:17So Hakkinen comes in, and Coulthard, who just set fast the slap of the race,
01:06:21to no surprise, is being left out to try to open up that advantage
01:06:25over Barrichello.
01:06:31Well, a reasonable stop, 10, 11 seconds.
01:06:33Of course, he's had to put a lot of fuel on,
01:06:35so it's not a bad stop at all.
01:06:37Hold on that speed limiter as he goes down the pit road.
01:06:40Now, Mika's got to get in some electrifying laps as he goes out.
01:06:44He doesn't look like he's got a clean bit of track
01:06:46because there's a few cars going around in front of him.
01:06:48One of them could be, of course, Schumacher, Michael Schumacher,
01:06:51because he was some 20-odd seconds behind.
01:06:53And here's DC having caught up one of the minorities,
01:06:55and that will not help him in his bid to get away from Barrichello.
01:07:00Now, he might just get by him under braking.
01:07:02Yeah, he does, going into the left-hander at Abbey.
01:07:09He goes down through a bridge.
01:07:10So this is the key, is how much of an advantage can Kulldorff put on Barrichello now
01:07:14before they both stop?
01:07:19Well, Mika Hakkinen lost a lot of track position
01:07:21because both Williams went through before Hakkinen came back on track.
01:07:26And he's going to find it difficult to get past Ralph, that is for sure.
01:07:29He's got to be careful.
01:07:31He's got to be careful.
01:07:32He's got to be careful.
01:07:33He's got to be careful.
01:07:34He's got to be careful.
01:07:35He's got to be careful.
01:07:36He's got to be careful.
01:07:37He's got to be careful.
01:07:38He's got to be careful.
01:07:39Mika lost Ralph, that is for sure,
01:07:40and it's interesting to see what he does about Jenson Dutton,
01:07:42if he ever gets that far up.
01:07:45But that's not really what Mika wanted.
01:07:47He needed a better stop than that.
01:07:49But remember the Williams will have to stop again.
01:07:51So that would give Mika back into sequence.
01:07:55But in the meantime, he will probably lose the time
01:07:57that he would dearly love to be in front of the Williams
01:07:59rather than behind them.
01:08:01Yes, there's no catching up to be done when you're sitting here.
01:08:05He's got the same situation that Michael Schumacher's had.
01:08:07Schumacher's had only, Michael's been behind Jacques Villeneuve.
01:08:09That's assuming that Schumacher doesn't have a problem with his car.
01:08:12So let's reset.
01:08:13Coulthard is the leader, uh, for McLaren.
01:08:16Barrichello for Ferrari.
01:08:18Neither have stopped.
01:08:19Mika Haakon in his third.
01:08:21Jacques Villeneuve is fourth, and Michael Schumacher fifth.
01:08:24They both have to stop.
01:08:26Then Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher, and Jenson Button.
01:08:31Here we are.
01:08:32Ready for David Coulthard, are they?
01:08:35David's coming in this lap, goes under bridge.
01:08:43Left-hander at Ferrari, up into Brooklyn's second-gear corner.
01:08:4650 miles an hour.
01:08:49And then he'll go round the right-hander at Woodcote, and then into the pit.
01:08:53I saw Irvine, Zonta, Lacey, and Benitz, and Johnny Herbart.
01:09:05So, here's our race leader, Coulthard.
01:09:08And this does seem so slow at 48 miles an hour.
01:09:15Now they just need a really, they want it quicker than 11 seconds.
01:09:18Come and get that fuel in, boys.
01:09:21Yeah, good stop.
01:09:22Two seconds, a second anyway, quicker than Mika Haakon.
01:09:25And so, here we're looking good, and this is a great chance for David.
01:09:28My goodness, he needs this.
01:09:29He said, oh, there's, looks like Ruben, oh, that's, who is that?
01:09:32One of the Ferraris, anyway, coming up to go round.
01:09:38And Jacques Villeneuve is also in.
01:09:40That was Schumacher going fast, and Frentzen.
01:09:42Yeah, I was looking for Villeneuve, and I didn't see him.
01:09:44That's why I stuttered, yes.
01:09:47I thought it had to be Michael.
01:09:50There's Jacques.
01:09:51Now, it's to see what times Michael Schumacher does without Villeneuve in the way.
01:09:57We did say just now that Ferrari, hello, slow stop there, 11 seconds.
01:10:01It must have been a lifetime waiting for that board to be pulled out of your way,
01:10:06and let you go down that pit lane and out.
01:10:08You know, the Honda folks must be pleased.
01:10:09It's coincidental, but the livery, the non-tobacco livery of Villeneuve's car
01:10:14is very reminiscent of the first Honda Formula 1 cars,
01:10:17all white, with the big red circle.
01:10:20In this case, it's for lucky strike, rather than the rising sun,
01:10:23but very reminiscent of the mid-60s Honda livery.
01:10:27Absolutely.
01:10:28The other interesting fact is, too, is that Jordan, who, as you see,
01:10:32do seem to outrun the VAR.
01:10:34Remember, they're running a Mugen Honda engine,
01:10:36relative of the Honda factory, nonetheless,
01:10:39but it's been intimated that they may well get
01:10:43official works Honda engines next year.
01:10:46Rather than the Mugen, which would be very good for them.
01:10:48However, they may not be quite the same spec as VAR have.
01:10:52But, all the time, we have Jordan have the chassis that seems to work better
01:10:56than the Raynard or the VAR.
01:10:59Certainly, Eddie Jordan is deserving.
01:11:02He's certainly shown the performance and the results
01:11:05to make him deserving of the best of whatever Honda can put on the table.
01:11:09But the relationship between Honda and Mugen is an interesting one.
01:11:14Mr. Honda's son formed Mugen as a tuning company,
01:11:17and it was kind of, I guess in America you'd call it the skunk works,
01:11:20what they would call it at, say, Ford or GM,
01:11:23with these special tuner cars and parts,
01:11:25and it's come all the way to Formula 1 engines.
01:11:27So, do you interrupt what's being done there
01:11:29and turn it all over to the big boys at the factory?
01:11:32Because I know they're very proud of what they're doing for Jordan.
01:11:34Well, Mugen Honda actually were owned 40% by Honda,
01:11:37and in the last two weeks sold that 40% back.
01:11:40Oops.
01:11:41Yep, oops.
01:11:42End of story.
01:11:43So, Honda got their money back,
01:11:44and Mugen aren't owned partially by Honda anymore,
01:11:46which may well account for the comments for next year.
01:11:51Well, Ferrari pit stops yet to come,
01:11:53and Yarno truly for Jordan.
01:11:55Oh, a big spin.
01:11:57Rubens, is it?
01:11:58Oh, no, Rubens Barry Keller, what are you doing?
01:12:01Through the water.
01:12:02Oh, no, get out of that mud.
01:12:07Oh, that was a Kell-er-er, as they say.
01:12:09He's going straight in the pits, is he? No?
01:12:11Yes.
01:12:12Yes, he is. He's gonna...
01:12:13No, they weren't ready for him.
01:12:15They weren't ready.
01:12:16Pandemonium now in the Ferrari pit.
01:12:17Boy, did...
01:12:18Ferrari needed Rubens to get a result here.
01:12:27Didn't see what triggered the spin, but...
01:12:30Hello for Barry Keller.
01:12:34Ferrari reacted very, very quickly.
01:12:37And even though...
01:12:38Oh, no, he can't get any gear.
01:12:39Can't get any gear.
01:12:42Oh, no.
01:12:43He's done.
01:12:44That is, he's just done the clutch.
01:12:46Because he did the clutch, no doubt, when he spun it.
01:12:48Shifting.
01:12:49He's doing it for it.
01:12:51Oh, Barry Keller, what is this?
01:12:54Not sure if it was the clutching,
01:12:55or if the car just would not select the gear.
01:12:58They're getting out of the way,
01:12:59because obviously they want to bring Schumacher in, don't they?
01:13:01Yes.
01:13:02They want him out of the way.
01:13:03I can't believe it.
01:13:05Yeah, they can't risk running Michael out of fuel.
01:13:07No.
01:13:08No, that's the point.
01:13:09It must be time,
01:13:10because Rubens probably was...
01:13:11might have lost a bit of concentration,
01:13:13thinking about coming in for fuel.
01:13:15Or he might well have damaged the car in the spin.
01:13:19I don't think so,
01:13:20because I don't think he knew,
01:13:21unless he got touched.
01:13:22Here we go.
01:13:23Let's see what happens.
01:13:26Oh.
01:13:27He just loses it.
01:13:28Just completely loses it.
01:13:29And this is where he doesn't do the clutch any good,
01:13:31because he keeps the tyres smoking.
01:13:33Then he goes almost right round the other way.
01:13:35Then he goes across the grass,
01:13:37and that really does not do the clutch any good,
01:13:39because right now,
01:13:40he's having to slip that clutch.
01:13:43Oh, dear, dear, dear.
01:13:44You don't do that at Ferrari.
01:13:48Well, but now,
01:13:49by keeping the tyres lit up like that,
01:13:52doesn't everything stay engaged?
01:13:54Oh, indeed it does,
01:13:55but of course he gets on the grass
01:13:57and has to hold it.
01:13:58Yes.
01:13:59There's already some donuts there.
01:14:01So it shows his tyres were pretty nasty.
01:14:03You know,
01:14:04the tyres weren't in good condition at that point.
01:14:06No.
01:14:07And Ferrari really needed Barry Keller out there
01:14:09to get some points.
01:14:10Now, of course,
01:14:11we have the situation
01:14:12that Poltard's going to get the points.
01:14:14Well,
01:14:15we're a long way to go yet.
01:14:16Michael Schumacher,
01:14:17quickest lap,
01:14:18but for Michael Schumacher,
01:14:191.26.7.
01:14:20Isn't this frustrating for him?
01:14:2126th lap.
01:14:22He's inherited the lead in this race,
01:14:24but it will be short-lived.
01:14:26Ferrari is going to have to pit Schumacher
01:14:28very, very soon.
01:14:29He just shows how he,
01:14:31how much time he lost
01:14:33behind Jack Villeneuve,
01:14:34nearly 30 seconds,
01:14:35which is a full,
01:14:36complete pit stop.
01:14:37He did not need that.
01:14:41No.
01:14:42So Rubens Barrichello's
01:14:43drive from the pole
01:14:44will come to naught,
01:14:45and Michael Schumacher
01:14:47has yet to make his pit stop.
01:14:48We'll be right back.
01:14:49...who has just spun his VAR off the course.
01:14:53First pit stop of the day
01:14:55and only stop course,
01:14:56Pugliano, truly.
01:14:58And it's a quick one.
01:14:59Nine and a half seconds,
01:15:00and Ferrari now is setting up
01:15:01for Michael Schumacher,
01:15:03who has assumed the lead in this race
01:15:05and will be the last car to pit.
01:15:11So Schumacher leads it.
01:15:12Frensen,
01:15:13Coulthard,
01:15:14Ralf Schumacher,
01:15:15and Jensen Button
01:15:16running fourth and fifth,
01:15:17Mika Hakkinen in sixth.
01:15:19Jarno Trulli was seventh
01:15:20at the time of his stop.
01:15:21That will move up.
01:15:22Villeneuve,
01:15:23Fisichella,
01:15:24Irvine,
01:15:25and Alessi.
01:15:26And Jensen Button
01:15:27could be on the podium here.
01:15:29What a moment
01:15:30if he was to do that
01:15:31in his first ever British Grand Prix.
01:15:33He's only ever raced on this circuit
01:15:34once before
01:15:35on the full Grand Prix format.
01:15:36Here's Schumacher, I guess,
01:15:37coming in this lap.
01:15:39Yes, he's coming in.
01:15:41But all is really lost
01:15:42because he is,
01:15:43although he's losing the whole time
01:15:45with his pit stop now.
01:15:46They've got to be so slick.
01:15:49Yeah, he will surrender the lead
01:15:50to Frensen
01:15:52and he will be the last car
01:15:53to lead to Frensen
01:15:55and Coulthard
01:15:56and he may come out
01:15:59in front or behind Hakkinen.
01:16:00Likely just behind.
01:16:02I think he'll be behind Hakkinen.
01:16:03Good stop.
01:16:04Yes.
01:16:05Of course, they didn't have that much fuel
01:16:06to put in
01:16:07because he's so close
01:16:08to the end of the race.
01:16:10You see the rain light,
01:16:11the tail light blinking
01:16:12indicating that
01:16:13they are using
01:16:14the cruise control,
01:16:15the pit road speed limiter.
01:16:17Here he goes.
01:16:18He's off now.
01:16:19He said,
01:16:20the heck with that, I'm off.
01:16:21He was practicing
01:16:22as hard as he could
01:16:23two days ago
01:16:24and he actually
01:16:25knocked over one of his mechanics.
01:16:26He was in such a desperate hurry
01:16:27to get in
01:16:29because that's where Schumacher
01:16:30and the Ferrari crew
01:16:31seem to make up
01:16:32is a lot of time
01:16:33getting in the pits
01:16:34and getting out again.
01:16:36So Schumacher should now be
01:16:37in seventh place
01:16:38behind Hakkinen
01:16:39but ahead
01:16:40of Trulli and Villeneuve.
01:16:43Well, they're posting him
01:16:44as sixth. Let's see.
01:16:52So Prost is setting up
01:16:53for another pit stop.
01:17:00Michael Schumacher
01:17:01but stopping a bit
01:17:02quicker than Coulthard
01:17:03and well quicker
01:17:04than Mika Hakkinen.
01:17:06This is the thing
01:17:07that gets the people
01:17:08about the Formula 1 situation
01:17:09is that Schumacher
01:17:10who could be two seconds
01:17:11a lap quicker than Villeneuve
01:17:13cannot get by him
01:17:15and with all his talent
01:17:18Heidfeld
01:17:19Heidfeld in for his second stop
01:17:20with all the talent
01:17:21that he's got
01:17:22and the machine he's got
01:17:23he cannot get by
01:17:24another car
01:17:25and that is
01:17:26really not good
01:17:27for Formula 1
01:17:28one has to say.
01:17:29It's difficult to overtake
01:17:30because they can't
01:17:31get close enough
01:17:32due to the turbulence
01:17:33that is Zonta's car
01:17:34that they're dragging down
01:17:35one of the escape roads.
01:17:37Well, the groove tires
01:17:38were introduced
01:17:39to help control speed
01:17:41in Formula 1
01:17:43and they have
01:17:44they haven't really
01:17:45slowed the cars
01:17:46but they've arrested
01:17:47progress
01:17:48of top speed
01:17:49but it means
01:17:50that the cars
01:17:51are now so much more
01:17:52dependent on aerodynamic
01:17:53grip
01:17:54in the ratio
01:17:55than they were
01:17:56compared to the
01:17:57mechanical grip
01:17:58of the tires
01:17:59and if your car
01:18:00is not in clean air
01:18:01you're not getting
01:18:02enough downforce
01:18:03to go through the corners
01:18:04quickly
01:18:05and thus to have
01:18:06passing opportunities.
01:18:10It's Busy Keller
01:18:11coming in
01:18:12very possible
01:18:13there were hydraulic
01:18:14pressure problems
01:18:15with Rubens Barry
01:18:16Keller's car
01:18:17which has possibly
01:18:18caused him to spin
01:18:19and caused him to do
01:18:20that dropping back
01:18:21when he suddenly
01:18:22got jumped upon
01:18:23by David Coulthard
01:18:24because it was a bit of
01:18:25having held up
01:18:26his position so strongly
01:18:27for the whole race
01:18:28to suddenly lose it
01:18:29like that
01:18:30in a rather
01:18:31sort of
01:18:32an academic way
01:18:33you wouldn't think
01:18:34it would be
01:18:35worthy of Rubens Barry
01:18:36Keller, you'd expect
01:18:37more of him.
01:18:38Let's ride with
01:18:39Johnny Herbert
01:18:40in the Jaguar.
01:18:50Herbert in 13th
01:18:51had a horrible
01:18:52or rather
01:18:53dismal qualifying
01:18:54in 4th
01:18:55qualified 14th
01:18:56and has moved
01:18:57up and down
01:18:58the line up.
01:18:59Sorry Mike
01:19:00I was just saying
01:19:01David Coulthard
01:19:02is starting to work
01:19:03in a way
01:19:04at Heinz-Auer-Frenzen
01:19:05they're absolutely
01:19:06outstanding for
01:19:07Frenzen and Jordan
01:19:08if they could win
01:19:09their 150th Grand Prix
01:19:10there's no reason
01:19:11in the world
01:19:12that they can't
01:19:13do it
01:19:14and they're
01:19:15doing it
01:19:16very well
01:19:17and they're
01:19:18there's no reason
01:19:19at this time
01:19:20that they shouldn't
01:19:21they should be able
01:19:22to hold off
01:19:23the McLarens.
01:19:25Well the attrition
01:19:26up until
01:19:27just a couple
01:19:28of laps ago
01:19:29had been quite low
01:19:30only the Arrows
01:19:31were out of the race
01:19:32before halfway
01:19:33both with hydraulic
01:19:34trouble now
01:19:35at Barrichello's
01:19:36Ferrari
01:19:37and Riccardo
01:19:38Zonta's VAR
01:19:39but only 4 cars
01:19:40out of this race
01:19:41and that's
01:19:42quite favorable.
01:19:45Especially when you
01:19:46look at how few
01:19:47have finished
01:19:48this race
01:19:49over the last
01:19:505 years.
01:19:5599 last year
01:19:56was pretty exceptional
01:19:57with 16 running.
01:20:00Marc Genet
01:20:01making his second
01:20:02pit stop of the day
01:20:06and he will give up
01:20:0714th place
01:20:08to do so.
01:20:18So Frentzen
01:20:19with a 1.7
01:20:20second lead
01:20:21on Coulthard
01:20:22and then the
01:20:23two Williams
01:20:24Ralf Schumacher
01:20:25and Jenson Button
01:20:27We never saw
01:20:28that move
01:20:29whether it was
01:20:30done during the pit stop
01:20:31I believe it was
01:20:32Ralf beat him
01:20:33out of the pits
01:20:34right here.
01:20:36Here we go
01:20:37Zonta losing it
01:20:38they really do
01:20:39get away
01:20:40look he's
01:20:41oh dear
01:20:42he's going
01:20:43to get away
01:20:44he's going to
01:20:45get away
01:20:46oh dear
01:20:48oh well he didn't
01:20:49come to any more
01:20:50than just a slight
01:20:51arresting
01:20:52but he unfortunately
01:20:53stored it
01:20:54I think if he kept
01:20:55it going
01:20:56because of all the
01:20:57wetness underneath
01:20:58all that shingle
01:20:59he would have
01:21:00probably got away
01:21:01with it.
01:21:02Frentzen's pulled
01:21:03out 4 tenths
01:21:04we look at Mike
01:21:05Gascoigne
01:21:07Mike Gascoigne
01:21:13Sorry Mike
01:21:14On Heinz-Harald
01:21:15Derek
01:21:16he stopped
01:21:17at lap 24
01:21:18that's a little
01:21:19early for a one stop
01:21:20would you say?
01:21:23It'll be very
01:21:24interesting to see
01:21:25won't it?
01:21:26I can't believe
01:21:27they've come in
01:21:28for a splash and dash
01:21:29but they did come
01:21:30in a bit early
01:21:31it might have been
01:21:32to free him up
01:21:33although there
01:21:34looks like they
01:21:35were expecting
01:21:36for Heinz
01:21:37because Trulli
01:21:38did not stop
01:21:39until lap 36
01:21:40just 5 ago
01:21:41here he comes
01:21:42he's in the pit lane
01:21:43now
01:21:44so that gives
01:21:45David Coulthard
01:21:46the lead
01:21:47and David's gonna
01:21:48hopefully make it
01:21:49plain sailing
01:21:50and keep it on
01:21:51the road
01:21:52with the two
01:21:53Williams right
01:21:54behind him
01:21:55or close behind
01:21:56him anyway
01:21:57it's gonna drop
01:21:58Heinz back to 5th
01:21:59probably 6th
01:22:00Michael Schumacher
01:22:01was 21 seconds
01:22:02behind him
01:22:03so it'll be
01:22:04a second stop
01:22:05but will Schumacher
01:22:06here's Michael Schumacher
01:22:07so he has
01:22:08Schumacher is now
01:22:09ahead of Frenzen
01:22:10so Schumacher
01:22:11takes in
01:22:125th place
01:22:18well that's a
01:22:19that was a
01:22:20strategical
01:22:21sort of
01:22:22mistake
01:22:23or disappointment
01:22:24I would say
01:22:25for Jordan there
01:22:26I'd like to see them
01:22:27do a better job
01:22:28than that
01:22:29and perhaps
01:22:30maintain that lead
01:22:31it'll put Frenzen
01:22:32back at 6th
01:22:33but Schumacher
01:22:34is gonna make
01:22:35truly an 8th
01:22:36so Ralph Schumacher
01:22:37moves up
01:22:38on the list
01:22:39and Fox Sports
01:22:40coverage of the
01:22:41Grand Prix will

01:23:13the leader
01:23:14from Ralph Schumacher
01:23:15and Jensen Button
01:23:16but they have both
01:23:17got to stop
01:23:18Mike
01:23:19yes
01:23:20they both
01:23:21those
01:23:22those
01:23:23those Williams
01:23:24have got to
01:23:25stop for fuel
01:23:26which will let
01:23:27Hacken in up
01:23:28into 2nd place
01:23:29and will
01:23:30no doubt
01:23:31be in
01:23:32lap 24
01:23:33and Jensen Button
01:23:3425
01:23:35Ralph could have
01:23:36been lap 23
01:23:37we'll double check
01:23:38that
01:23:39that would make
01:23:40it awful tough
01:23:41to run
01:23:42a one stop race
01:23:43as Heinz Harald
01:23:44Frentzen
01:23:45who was in
01:23:46lap 24
01:23:47also
01:23:48just made
01:23:49his
01:23:502nd stop
01:23:51comparison
01:23:52of laps
01:23:53between Schumacher
01:23:54and Hacken
01:23:55Michael Schumacher
01:23:56started 5th
01:23:57today after winning
01:23:58the first 3
01:23:59Grand Prix's
01:24:00he made a little
01:24:01change on his
01:24:02last run
01:24:03that didn't
01:24:04quite pay off
01:24:05and he started
01:24:06the race from
01:24:075th
01:24:08and got
01:24:09banged wheels
01:24:10with Hacken in
01:24:11on the run
01:24:12to the first
01:24:13corner
01:24:14and ran
01:24:15most of
01:24:16the first
01:24:17stint
01:24:18back at
01:24:197th
01:24:208th
01:24:21place
01:24:22Schumacher
01:24:23you can see
01:24:24just there
01:24:25not far
01:24:26behind
01:24:27Michael
01:24:28Hacken
01:24:29with Herbert
01:24:30being on a
01:24:31one stop
01:24:32or his day
01:24:33appears
01:24:34is going to
01:24:35finish a lot
01:24:36better than
01:24:37his season
01:24:38has started
01:24:39there were
01:24:40rumors that
01:24:41Herbert might
01:24:42be replaced
01:24:43after this race
01:24:44but those were
01:24:45denied by
01:24:46the Jaguar
01:24:47and Ford
01:24:48people
01:24:49and by
01:24:50Herbert
01:24:51just all
01:24:52a part of
01:24:53silly season
01:24:54and
01:24:55well Neil
01:24:56Ressler
01:24:57said that
01:24:59for either
01:25:00Ralf Schumacher
01:25:01or Jensen Button
01:25:02Michael Schumacher
01:25:03knocked 3 tenths
01:25:04off
01:25:05Mika Hacken's
01:25:06time just now
01:25:07remember Mika
01:25:08is being
01:25:09slightly held up
01:25:10by the two
01:25:11Williams in front
01:25:12held up is the
01:25:13word at this
01:25:14level of
01:25:15Formula 1
01:25:16but Hacken
01:25:17and even after
01:25:18the Williams
01:25:19pit stop
01:25:20is going to
01:25:21be 11 seconds
01:25:22behind his
01:25:23teammate
01:25:24the defending
01:25:25champion of
01:25:26this race
01:25:27back to back
01:25:28victory
01:25:29not only that
01:25:30but also for him
01:25:31to score McLaren's
01:25:32first win of the
01:25:33season
01:25:34that would
01:25:35would really be
01:25:36a coup
01:25:37yes after all
01:25:38they said about it
01:25:39as we're riding
01:25:40here with
01:25:41Johnny Herbert
01:25:42setting out
01:25:43onto
01:25:44Hangar
01:25:45Straight
01:25:46Mika Hacken
01:25:47has pulled
01:25:48it back
01:25:49a little bit
01:25:50of that time
01:25:51that Schumacher
01:25:52had pulled
01:25:53in on him
01:25:54and Jensen
01:25:55Button
01:25:56is in
01:25:57the third
01:25:58place
01:25:59car
01:26:00the 20
01:26:01year old
01:26:02phenom
01:26:03as Ralf
01:26:04Schumacher
01:26:05goes past
01:26:06here is Button
01:26:07in for his
01:26:08final stop
01:26:09what sort
01:26:10of a stop
01:26:11will he have
01:26:12will he get
01:26:13out and get
01:26:14a better pit
01:26:15stop than
01:26:16Ralf Schumacher
01:26:17and therefore
01:26:18be ahead of
01:26:19him
01:26:20good stop
01:26:217.5 seconds
01:26:22there's the
01:26:23red light on
01:26:24the back
01:26:25of the
01:26:26hangar
01:26:27now
01:26:28what you've got to
01:26:29be careful
01:26:30when you put the
01:26:31power in
01:26:32slam it into
01:26:33the inside of
01:26:34the guard rail
01:26:35because it hurts
01:26:36on the inside
01:26:37there
01:26:38that
01:26:39and Ralf
01:26:40Schumacher
01:26:41will be in
01:26:42next lap
01:26:43so David
01:26:44Coulthard
01:26:45from McLaren
01:26:46the leader
01:26:47Ralf Schumacher
01:26:48will give up
01:26:49second place
01:26:50to Mika
01:26:51Hacken
01:26:52and when he
01:26:53makes his
01:26:54stop
01:26:55Eddie Irvine
01:26:56is in for
01:26:57Jaguar
01:26:58for his
01:26:59second trip
01:27:00to the pit lane
01:27:01here they are
01:27:02ready in the
01:27:03BMW pit
01:27:04Eddie Irvine
01:27:05is in there
01:27:06not doing very much
01:27:07to Eddie at the
01:27:08moment
01:27:09what's happening
01:27:10there
01:27:11looks like he's
01:27:12got a problem
01:27:13they put the
01:27:14electric starter
01:27:15in the back
01:27:16can't get
01:27:17any gears
01:27:18they're so
01:27:19fragile
01:27:20these
01:27:21clutches
01:27:22there he goes
01:27:24and here comes
01:27:25Ralf
01:27:26almost simultaneously
01:27:27to Eddie's exit
01:27:28now is he going
01:27:29to be quicker out
01:27:30is he going to get
01:27:31in front of
01:27:32Jenson Button
01:27:33or is Jenson
01:27:34going to have
01:27:35done a quick lap
01:27:36Ralf does need
01:27:37for his own
01:27:38peace of mind
01:27:39to get in front
01:27:40because remember
01:27:41Jenson out
01:27:42qualified him
01:27:43by only 200
01:27:44per second
01:27:45but still
01:27:46it ain't good
01:27:47it's a little quicker
01:27:48these two young
01:27:49men
01:27:50it's a quicker
01:27:51stop
01:27:52before him
01:27:53ooh
01:27:54that was going
01:27:55to be close
01:27:56but it's Schumacher
01:27:57alright
01:27:58because you're
01:27:59up to about
01:28:00130's
01:28:01you come up
01:28:02that bit late
01:28:03nevertheless
01:28:04a great piece
01:28:05of driving
01:28:06by Jenson Button
01:28:07one has to say
01:28:08everybody gave him
01:28:09such a hard time
01:28:10and said
01:28:11you know
01:28:12it's too soon
01:28:13for the guy
01:28:14he needs
01:28:15training
01:28:16another race
01:28:17series
01:28:18but if you've
01:28:19got the talent
01:28:20why not let him
01:28:21take a look
01:28:22at the background
01:28:23of your picture
01:28:24with the headset on
01:28:25and I'm
01:28:26continually reminded
01:28:27Derek
01:28:28I can't remember
01:28:29who said it
01:28:30but of the quote
01:28:31talking about
01:28:32Jenson Button
01:28:33well if you're
01:28:34good enough
01:28:35you're old enough
01:28:36Johnny Herbert
01:28:37is in
01:28:38for Jaguar
01:28:39they'll complete
01:28:40their pit stops
01:28:41for the day
01:28:42doing some work
01:28:43in there
01:28:44something was loose
01:28:45tightening up
01:28:46something on the
01:28:47right hand side
01:28:48of the cockpit
01:28:49poor old Johnny
01:28:50as he's had it
01:28:51all year
01:28:52and I think that's
01:28:53what the Jaguar
01:28:54personnel realised
01:28:55that he's not had
01:28:56the sort of luck
01:28:57that you need
01:28:58you need to be lucky
01:28:59in any form
01:29:00in anything in life
01:29:01of course
01:29:06there's that
01:29:07130 miles an hour
01:29:08at the pit exit
01:29:09Derek spoke of
01:29:12Mika Hakkinen
01:29:13just behind him
01:29:14sorry
01:29:15there's Mika
01:29:16coming down
01:29:17yeah I was just
01:29:18going to point out
01:29:19after everyone
01:29:20has pretty much
01:29:21cycled through pit stops
01:29:26Schumacher's trying
01:29:27to get by these other cars
01:29:28you see Schumacher
01:29:29coming down the inside
01:29:30of the Jag
01:29:31whips across
01:29:32in front of him
01:29:38so after 49 laps
01:29:39David Coulthard
01:29:40and Mika Hakkinen
01:29:41and the McLaren
01:29:42Mercedes
01:29:43now sit
01:29:441-2
01:29:45we'll be right back
01:29:46Grand Prix of
01:29:47Great Britain
01:29:48David Coulthard
01:29:49leading Mika Hakkinen
01:29:50Michael Schumacher
01:29:51and
01:29:52Heinz-Harald Frentzen
01:29:55let's have another look
01:29:56at the start
01:29:57and show you
01:29:58the wheelbanging
01:29:59between the Ferrari
01:30:00of Michael Schumacher
01:30:01and Mika Hakkinen's
01:30:02McLaren
01:30:04there goes Michael
01:30:05has his left two wheels
01:30:06just about on the grass
01:30:07Mika has given him
01:30:08the room
01:30:09and then thinks
01:30:10well I don't want to
01:30:11give him too much room
01:30:12because he was looking
01:30:13the other way for Michael
01:30:14at the start
01:30:15Michael then drops
01:30:16right back
01:30:17and then Rubens
01:30:18Barrichello
01:30:19while leading
01:30:20while leading
01:30:21but we think he might have
01:30:22had a hydraulic problem
01:30:23which is enough
01:30:24to screw everything up
01:30:25for you
01:30:26in this particular case
01:30:27he goes round and round
01:30:28then rides across the dirt
01:30:29and all the water
01:30:30if he didn't have one then
01:30:31he has one now
01:30:32he never made it
01:30:33out of the pits
01:30:34so Barrichello
01:30:35joins
01:30:36the arrows
01:30:37of Verstappen
01:30:38and de la Rosa
01:30:39and the B.A.R.
01:30:40of Riccardo Zonta
01:30:41as out of the race
01:30:43but if you thought
01:30:44the 30 miles or so
01:30:45of traffic leading
01:30:46into Silverstone
01:30:47was something
01:30:48the traffic that
01:30:49Michael Schumacher
01:30:50is in right now
01:30:51is from his perspective
01:30:52just as bad
01:30:53yeah and he probably
01:30:54came by helicopter
01:30:55this morning
01:30:56yeah
01:30:57but he's had
01:30:58a lot of lappers
01:30:59to deal with
01:31:00as he tries
01:31:01to close down
01:31:02on Mika Haakon
01:31:03and there's the gap
01:31:04minus 9.2 seconds
01:31:05that was last time
01:31:06through
01:31:07and he's got
01:31:08a little bit
01:31:09of room
01:31:10in the pit
01:31:11minus 9.3
01:31:19we've got an 8.8
01:31:20on the monitor
01:31:21as
01:31:22we're back
01:31:23with Frenson
01:31:24who now
01:31:25is in
01:31:26fourth place
01:31:37he's got a problem
01:31:38with his car
01:31:39do you know
01:31:40he wasn't very clean
01:31:41on the pick up there
01:31:42did he
01:31:43no
01:31:44he's slowing right down
01:31:45he has a problem
01:31:46he has a major problem
01:31:58no he's coming
01:31:59in the pits
01:32:00he has a major problem
01:32:04he's not going in
01:32:05he's carrying on
01:32:06maybe he thinks
01:32:07he might be able
01:32:08to work it out
01:32:10as he lost a gear
01:32:11Derrick
01:32:12he ran that whole
01:32:13that whole run there
01:32:14through the corner
01:32:15and down that straightaway
01:32:16in one gear
01:32:17may well be
01:32:18what it is
01:32:21may well be
01:32:22what it is
01:32:23here just slowing it down
01:32:24he didn't go down
01:32:25a gear there
01:32:26he normally would go
01:32:27down a gear now
01:32:28because this is
01:32:29fourth
01:32:30now listen
01:32:31as he comes out of
01:32:32there
01:32:33he didn't seem
01:32:34to have any revs
01:32:35at all
01:32:36so some sort
01:32:37of what could be
01:32:38And he's about to be caught up by Ralf Schumacher.
01:32:43Excuse me.
01:32:44About to be caught up by Jenson Button.
01:32:48Yeah, we saw Ralf. I guess Ralf we saw go by him,
01:32:50although it was difficult to see who it was.
01:32:53When we first realized he had a problem.
01:32:58So there's Button, who's been a tremendous story all weekend.
01:33:04Can you believe on this old circuit of Silverstone,
01:33:06it was so fast.
01:33:08K.K. Rosberg, who in fact is Mika Hakkinen's manager,
01:33:11K.K. Rosberg went round here in a Williams Honda in 1985
01:33:16at 160 miles an hour average.
01:33:18And that was when they decided it was probably time
01:33:20to slow this place down.
01:33:21I mean, 160 is really quick.
01:33:23Because we still had a very slow corner at the backside
01:33:25at Beckett's.
01:33:26But it was basically flat, all the way down Hangar Straight,
01:33:29round Stowe, round Copse, or round Club Roller,
01:33:31and back up through Abbey, up to this corner here.
01:33:34Flat all the way.
01:33:35Here goes Button, trying to put the move on Frenson,
01:33:37and does so.
01:33:38And the crowd love it.
01:33:41Jensen Button is their boy.
01:33:44Frenson, by the way, the joke in the batik this weekend
01:33:47was that team owner Eddie Jordan presented Frenson
01:33:50on the occasion of the birth of his daughter Leah
01:33:53with a new McLaren.
01:33:56Oh, trouble here.
01:33:57McFrost, Hitefelt.
01:34:00He's out of the way, that's one thing for sure.
01:34:03But it's not a nice place to be.
01:34:04I'd want to get that car out of the way.
01:34:07Yeah, Eddie gave Frenson a new McLaren.
01:34:10Not McLaren, but McLaren,
01:34:12which is a very popular brand of baby stroller in Britain,
01:34:17and sold here in the U.S.,
01:34:19but of course the press instantly thought it was a McLaren car
01:34:22and had to get straightened out on the spelling.
01:34:35Well, with Frenson slipping back,
01:34:37that puts the McLarens 1-2,
01:34:40Schumacher's Ferrari 3rd,
01:34:44and the Williams 4th and 5th.
01:34:53Fastest lap there for Mika Hakkinen, 1.26.7.
01:34:55He is on the run, but he's not going to do much about David,
01:34:58I don't think.
01:35:05For David Coulthard, this is his 7th British Grand Prix.
01:35:09He's finished, and finished in the points every year,
01:35:13except 1998.
01:35:16He scored 21 points here,
01:35:17and that's more than any other driver who started today's race
01:35:21has earned in Britain.
01:35:35There are the constructor points coming in to this race.
01:35:39Ferrari would pick up only four,
01:35:41with Michael Schumacher and McLaren
01:35:43is in a position to pick up a maximum 16.
01:35:48That would eat somewhat into Ferrari's lead after three races.
01:35:52Well, it's inevitable it's going to happen.
01:35:53McLaren weren't going to stay losing races forever, that's for sure,
01:35:56despite what a lot of people said.
01:35:58McLaren are a very strong, competitive team,
01:36:00and Ron Dennis would not be happy
01:36:02with having more disappointments in Grand Prix.
01:36:07The Belgian Grand Prix last year was the last time
01:36:09that McLaren had a 1-2 finish in Formula 1.
01:36:22He's really slow now.
01:36:24I think he will go in, there's no point in staying out there.
01:36:26You're a hazard to the other cars if you stay out at this point.
01:36:29He can't be enjoying it much.
01:36:31He's lost most of the gears.
01:36:34But he's still in the points.
01:36:37He won't be for long, certainly.
01:36:39He could just keep trolling around.
01:36:41It's not like Villeneuve will be doing all he can to try and catch up.
01:36:46I don't know, Derek.
01:36:47I think I'd wait until there were no points to be earned
01:36:49before I parked it.
01:36:50But you're right, it's inevitable.
01:36:53So the McLaren's lead, Schumacher's Ferrari,
01:36:56here in the Grand Prix of Britain, with six laps to go.
01:37:00Our coverage continues after this.
01:37:04Poulthard is poised to win it for the second year in a row.
01:37:07His McLaren Mercedes teammate and defending world champ,
01:37:09Mika Hakkinen, is second.
01:37:11Heinz-Harald Frentzen has now retired his Jordan.
01:37:15Now, with gearbox trouble, this is Jarno.
01:37:17He's going to have to do it again.
01:37:19Here's Jordan, with gearbox trouble.
01:37:21This is Jarno Trulli battling Jacques Villeneuve
01:37:25for the final championship point.
01:37:27Sixth place is at stake here.
01:37:30Both the Williams are well-placed right now.
01:37:32Ralf Schumacher with the fourth spot,
01:37:35and Jensen Button fifth.
01:37:37Villeneuve with puffs of smoke coming out the back.
01:37:39He was doing that for quite a long...
01:37:41He was doing that way back halfway through the race.
01:37:43I can't... Oh, look at Trulli.
01:37:45Has he got him? Oh, he got him!
01:37:46What a pass!
01:37:47What a great pass by Trulli.
01:37:49There was no doubt about that, was there?
01:37:51Although, was Jacques really slowing down?
01:37:53But Jacques gave him half an inch point.
01:37:55He just took a mile.
01:37:56Jacques was slowing right down.
01:37:58Did we saw that puff of smoke?
01:38:00I think that might have been it.
01:38:01Do you not think?
01:38:02Because he certainly did slow.
01:38:04Oh, he's coming in the pit.
01:38:05Oh.
01:38:06Dear, Odo, I'm just going to think, you know,
01:38:08we're going to get another point here for B.A.R.
01:38:10That's just really what they needed.
01:38:13And so now that big red O on the side of that car
01:38:16becomes a goose egg,
01:38:18as B.A.R. with Zonta out...
01:38:20You mean Easter Egg, don't you?
01:38:22Not exactly.
01:38:23Okay.
01:38:24Looks like it.
01:38:26But no points for B.A.R. today.
01:38:30Oh, dear, oh, dear.
01:38:32That's very sad for B.A.R.
01:38:39Mika Hakkinen beginning to close in on Coulthard.
01:38:41Yeah, but David isn't going to be stressing himself out.
01:38:45There we go.
01:38:46You can see the gap there perfectly
01:38:47as they work their way through the Beckett's Complex.
01:38:49David would have got three or four laps to go.
01:38:51He's going to be taking it coolly.
01:38:53The last thing the world of Hakkinen is going to do
01:38:55is make an idiot of himself getting by David.
01:38:57Well, he knocked half a second off that last lap.
01:39:00And there's Jacques Villeneuve
01:39:03sadly out of this race
01:39:05after having a brilliant start for the second race in a row
01:39:09and running well up in the order,
01:39:11in the points most all day.
01:39:13They're going to get a good result
01:39:15before the end of the season, I'm sure.
01:39:173.8 seconds, I'm sorry to interrupt.
01:39:193.8 there between David and Mika.
01:39:21Yeah, it keeps coming down.
01:39:2216, Michael's just dropping back.
01:39:25Having been only 6 or 7 behind Mika earlier on.
01:39:29No doubt at the Drivers' Conference
01:39:31we'll find out why he's dropping back.
01:39:33Yeah, stay with us for that,
01:39:34the Drivers' Press Conference,
01:39:35plus, of course, the trophy presentations in Champagne.
01:39:38See, there's the board for Hakkinen.
01:39:40It says P2, lap 2, easy.
01:39:42In other words, don't go crazy.
01:39:43We need these points,
01:39:44so don't try and get David,
01:39:46because you're not going to get by him.
01:39:48And maybe spin off the road,
01:39:49which Mika is not in the habit of doing,
01:39:51one has to say.
01:39:52Well, that's what McLaren needs here,
01:39:54is maximum points from 1st and 2nd place.
01:39:58There's the gap.
01:40:04Well, having made all these criticisms
01:40:06about the race being in April,
01:40:09it certainly turned out to be a dry day in the end,
01:40:11but I think everybody says
01:40:12that next year it will be back in July,
01:40:14where it always historically has been.
01:40:16There was just a bit of confusion
01:40:17between the various people running motorsport,
01:40:20and therefore they said,
01:40:21Silverstone, you've got the race in April, boys,
01:40:23and you can put up with the lousy weather.
01:40:24But, of course, it's cost them dearly.
01:40:26Silverstone say they've lost something like $6 million
01:40:29because of putting the race on in April.
01:40:31You know, Derek,
01:40:32if this race had more than two laps to go,
01:40:34we might see a different winner,
01:40:35as Hakkinen is really, really closing on Coulthard.
01:40:39Yeah, but the team have told him
01:40:40to take it easy, Mike,
01:40:41and you wouldn't go against your team,
01:40:42and David is not going to be hurrying
01:40:44because he's just going to want to get to that finish.
01:40:46He knows the race is his.
01:40:48Well, and that's the point.
01:40:49Michael Schumacher is 20 seconds off the lead,
01:40:52so the McLarens are pretty well uncontested.
01:40:55Belgium, last win for Coulthard.
01:41:01And he will be the first McLaren driver
01:41:03to win in the year 2000.
01:41:07Ralf Schumacher in fourth.
01:41:11Jenson Button in fifth.
01:41:14And Jarno Trulli in sixth.
01:41:16Fisichella now in seventh.
01:41:17Mika Salo, who had a horrible qualifying,
01:41:20is well placed in eighth.
01:41:22Alexander Wurz is ninth.
01:41:23And John Elasi tenth.
01:41:24Pedro Diniz, Johnny Herbert, Eddie Irvine.
01:41:28And Mark Janney and Matsukane.
01:41:37Oh, and a great day for David Coulthard
01:41:39from the second row on the grid.
01:41:42He is looking for back-to-back victories
01:41:45in the British Grand Prix.
01:41:47And as I pointed out,
01:41:48he has finished his home Grand Prix in the points
01:41:51every year he's attempted, save 1998.
01:41:58Well, the crowds are going to be very happy with David.
01:42:00He has had such a lot of press over the last few years,
01:42:04you know, with his problems with McLaren,
01:42:06not probably being the favorite son of the team.
01:42:09But here he is doing a double, winning his home Grand Prix.
01:42:12And as he said, there's nothing like winning
01:42:14your home Grand Prix.
01:42:15Very, very, very, very special.
01:42:18Mika Hakka continues to close up
01:42:22as Alexander Wurz was overlapped.
01:42:25That's Fisichella being overlapped by the leaders.
01:42:29Here they come.
01:42:31The last time through the complex,
01:42:32about 600 yards to go.
01:42:34Last time David won was in Belgium, 1999.
01:42:38Back in front of the crowd,
01:42:39many of whom could not get to this race
01:42:41due to the problems getting into the parking lots.
01:42:44We're told to stay home.
01:42:46Here he goes, over the line.
01:42:48There's the flag.
01:42:49Brilliant stuff for David Coulthard.
01:42:51That was a super drive.
01:42:52I mean, he was there all weekend.
01:42:54What a lovely drive by him
01:42:55and showed that he does have that talent to do it.
01:43:00Mika Hakkanen finishes second.
01:43:02A sweep for McLaren.
01:43:04Here is Michael Schumacher.
01:43:06And the red flag's wave as Schumacher comes on for third.
01:43:12That was one of Michael Schumacher's
01:43:13toughest races, I would say.
01:43:16But he got some points,
01:43:17which is really what he needed.
01:43:18Super drive by Ralph Schumacher, too.
01:43:21Yeah, the day belongs to McLaren,
01:43:22but I think it also belongs to Williams BMW
01:43:25because here is Ralph Schumacher
01:43:26and Jensen Button, fourth and fifth.
01:43:28BMW's first year back in Formula One.
01:43:32Jensen Button's first year in Formula One.
01:43:35And Ralph Schumacher leads his teammate
01:43:37to a fourth and fifth place finish.
01:43:39Well, they didn't plan to do very much
01:43:40for about a couple of years,
01:43:41and here they are.
01:43:42Virtually, not quite,
01:43:44but certainly in the points,
01:43:45but not quite on the podium.
01:43:46Wonderful drive by Jensen Button
01:43:48in his first British Grand Prix.
01:43:49I'm sure that young man will win a Grand Prix
01:43:51in the not-too-distant future.
01:43:53And Jarno Ciuli for Jordan.
01:43:56Here we see Jordan's 150th Grand Prix.
01:43:58Heights Harold Frentzen falls out with gearbox trouble,
01:44:01but here is Jarno Ciuli salvaging the final point.
01:44:06So a point for Jordan as he finishes sixth.
01:44:10Yeah, that was very good
01:44:11because they've been having problems
01:44:12with their gearboxes.
01:44:13They were stuck in sixth gear with Frentzen
01:44:15at Imola just the same.
01:44:16Whoops.
01:44:17Look at that tight group.
01:44:18Lucky they're going slowly.
01:44:21And there is Heidi,
01:44:22is David Coulthard's fiancée.
01:44:25We'll see David on the podium
01:44:26for the trophy presentation in Champagne
01:44:29after this.
01:44:32Formula One on Fox Sports Net
01:44:34has been brought to you by Toyota
01:44:36on the edge every day.
01:44:40David Coulthard has won his home Grand Prix
01:44:42for the second year in a row,
01:44:45leading his McLaren Mercedes teammate
01:44:47Mika Hakkinen to the checkered flag,
01:44:49Michael Schumacher for Ferrari third,
01:44:51the Williams of Ralf Schumacher
01:44:53and Jensen Button fourth and fifth
01:44:55and the Jordan of Jarno Ciuli sixth.

01:44:59Salo's Sauber,
01:45:00Wurtz's Benetton,
01:45:01Alessi Dienitz,
01:45:02and Johnny Herbert.
01:45:04Ahead of his Jaguar teammate Eddie Irvine,
01:45:06the minorities of Genet and Mazzucani,
01:45:08and also classed as finishers

01:45:13Michael Schumacher's lead
01:45:14in the Drivers' Championship
01:45:15cut to 20 with Coulthard now second,
01:45:18then Hakkinen, Barrichello,
01:45:19Ralf Schumacher, and Fisichella.
01:45:22Jack Villeneuve, Frentzen, Ciuli,
01:45:24Button, Zonta, and Salo in the points.
01:45:28Ferrari have 43,
01:45:29but McLaren Mercedes
01:45:30has some valuable points today at 26,
01:45:32Williams 12, Benetton, Jordan 8,
01:45:34and BAR 6.
01:45:39So let's meet the podium finishers.

01:46:58McLaren, McLaren Ferrari.
01:47:00Ken Terrell presents David Coulthard
01:47:02with his trophy as the winning driver.
01:47:08Incredible form in front of this British crowd
01:47:11for the second time in a row after all the disappointing races he has been
01:47:15having and there he is winning his British Grand Prix. A brilliant move from
01:47:18Norbert Auer of course. The representative, if you like, of the
01:47:22company's director of Mercedes receiving the Constructors' Award.
01:47:29Mika Hakkinen getting second place trophy from Peter Hayne, the Minister of State.
01:47:35And John Quenby from the MSA, the Motorsports Association, presenting the
01:47:42third-place trophy to Michael Schumacher, who has still got a lot of Ferrari fans out
01:47:46there. Look out boys, here comes the champagne. Norbert Haag is going to catch the lot.
01:47:57Norbert is absolutely submerged.
01:48:03Michael's holding him so Mika can get him.
01:48:07Well, if he can't beat him, soak him.
01:48:09Yeah, there you go. Gonna make the most of it, David.
01:48:11Wonderful, wonderful champagne.
01:48:15Norbert, I wish I was in total waterproofs today.
01:48:17Great moment for these two.
01:48:19That's not a champagne shower, it's a dunking.
01:48:23A lot of champagne in those bottles.
01:48:30Three great drivers.
01:48:33Schumacher.
01:48:35Schumacher.
01:48:37If I'm going to get as wet as this, I might as well get out there.
01:48:39Did you see Michael give David a wedgie?
01:48:41Did he?
01:48:43Yes.
01:48:53Great, great moment up there on the winner's roster at Silverstone.
01:48:57A lot of people out there, a lot of people, a lot of enthusiasm.
01:48:59Great to have a British driver win.
01:49:02The British Grand Prix.
01:49:06But we'll be back to hear from the podium finishers.
01:49:08So stay with us.
01:49:10You're watching Formula One on Fox Sportsnet.
01:49:14A pleasing demonstration as some of the folks hang around
01:49:16and await the long line of traffic leading out.
01:49:18Let's go hear from the podium finishers in today's race.
01:49:22Welcome to the top three finishing drivers
01:49:24in the British Grand Prix 2000.
01:49:26David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher.
01:49:28David, many congratulations.
01:49:31Back-to-back British Grand Prix wins.
01:49:33You must feel fantastic.
01:49:35It's great.
01:49:37I had such a long time to think about it
01:49:39when I was out there.
01:49:41I developed a small gearbox problem
01:49:43and I was preparing to cry in the car
01:49:45because I thought I don't need this.
01:49:47But thankfully it held together
01:49:49so it's great for the team.
01:49:51We've got both cars, first and second.
01:49:53Obviously I'm very happy for myself
01:49:55to win this race, to win it a second time.
01:49:57It's just fantastic.
01:49:59I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season.
01:50:01Last year it could have been said you inherited the win
01:50:03when Michael crashed and Mika broke down.
01:50:05Today you really won it with a superb move on Rubens.
01:50:07Talk us through it.
01:50:09I thought I was going to be stuck behind Rubens
01:50:11until the stop.
01:50:13I was comfortable with my stop
01:50:15and we were able to run the engine
01:50:17and I could hopefully go longer than he could.
01:50:19But then he made a small mistake
01:50:21coming out the last corner.
01:50:23I got it right and got a run on him.
01:50:25I remember Nigel Mansell's move
01:50:27a couple of years ago.
01:50:29So I thought I'd give that a go.
01:50:31It held together.
01:50:33Obviously that gave me the advantage for the pit stops.
01:50:35You set another first today.
01:50:37You were the first driver we've seen taking a phone call
01:50:39in Parc Fermat. Who rang you?
01:50:41I was talking to Ernst Hoover from Mercedes-Benz,
01:50:43one of the board of directors.
01:50:45Obviously it's very important for Mercedes
01:50:47to get a win again after the first three races
01:50:49being lost.
01:50:51So he was very happy.
01:50:53Mika, your race kind of went wrong at the start.
01:50:55What happened there?
01:50:57Well, initially the start
01:50:59happened really well.
01:51:01The car moved correctly, I got plenty of grip
01:51:03and then suddenly I just lost
01:51:05the grip.
01:51:07I tried to get the best out of it
01:51:09and
01:51:11I was still going quite well
01:51:13and then David was on the side of me, so I was a bit blocked.
01:51:15When we were heading towards
01:51:17the end of the first corner,
01:51:19Michael was on the left side of me.
01:51:21I had two
01:51:23decisions, either I continue
01:51:25going flat out or I left.
01:51:27So I decided to continue
01:51:29and it was a bit unfortunate
01:51:31for Michael, obviously.
01:51:33But generally I would say
01:51:35the start
01:51:37was the situation
01:51:39which decided a lot
01:51:41the outcome of the race
01:51:43and
01:51:45very
01:51:47unfortunate.
01:51:49Were you happy with the car during the race?
01:51:51At times it looked like you were struggling a bit with it.
01:51:53I was.
01:51:55I did not have
01:51:57a right balance and if you
01:51:59follow to this morning warm-up,
01:52:01I was hardly ever
01:52:03able to do any laps because I had a problem
01:52:05with the car.
01:52:07To get the balance of the race,
01:52:09you must have a good
01:52:11time, you have to have a good
01:52:13run in the morning and
01:52:15I was lacking to do that, so I was not
01:52:17able to get the best possible balance of the car.
01:52:19There we go.
01:52:21Michael, you seemed to suffer even worse from the
01:52:23start, you ended up in 8th in the first lap.
01:52:25Perhaps you can talk about how you saw those first few yards.
01:52:29I mean, I had a very good start,
01:52:31honestly.
01:52:33I had the option to go
01:52:35to the middle, but there were so many cars,
01:52:37they didn't seem to be opening
01:52:39any door, so I tried the opportunity
01:52:41to go through the grass, which
01:52:43normally should have worked, but after
01:52:45so much rain, the last days
01:52:47the grass was so wet that I was just sitting
01:52:49there whispering and going nowhere.
01:52:51Obviously I lost the momentum then
01:52:53and I don't know who
01:52:55was it, I think it was first, it was Batten
01:52:57going on the inside past me
01:52:59and then it was Villeneuve going on
01:53:01the outside past me, and then
01:53:03suddenly Ralf was coming and having
01:53:05a good fight with him for the first
01:53:07couple of corners, but then
01:53:09I really had to back off
01:53:11as we were going to the bridge because it
01:53:13would have been very, very tight
01:53:15and he did seem
01:53:17to be very keen to close the door
01:53:19so I didn't want to risk anything
01:53:21having an off with my
01:53:23brother, obviously, and I thought
01:53:25time will come for me
01:53:27but then I really got stuck, I mean
01:53:29I was behind Villeneuve, being much
01:53:31much faster, but no way to
01:53:33overtake. Given how far you fell behind
01:53:35the leading pack, are you quite happy to end up
01:53:37third at the end of the day? Absolutely, I mean
01:53:39I run for most of the race
01:53:41in 8th position and I was thinking
01:53:43well, I wonder how this race is going to develop
01:53:45for myself and how many points
01:53:47I'm going to lose
01:53:49at this stage I was quite happy, Rubens being first
01:53:51taking away some points from the
01:53:53guys in front
01:53:55like Mika and David
01:53:57unfortunately he
01:53:59stopped for whatever reason, I don't know
01:54:01so in the end of the day I was very happy
01:54:03to come third
01:54:05Thank you Michael. David,
01:54:07move on now to Barcelona, which has traditionally been one
01:54:09of the best tracks for McLaren, you must feel
01:54:11very very confident going into that weekend
01:54:13Yeah, we've always gone well
01:54:15at that circuit and
01:54:17we've got a test there next week so
01:54:19I see no reason why we won't be competitive there
01:54:21I expect obviously Ferrari to be
01:54:23quick again and it'll be close
01:54:25but nonetheless, if we can run
01:54:27reliably there's a good chance we can win that race
01:54:31So David Coulthard moves to number
01:54:332 in the Drivers Championship standings
01:54:35behind Michael Schumacher
01:54:37We'll be back to wrap things up in just a moment
