00:00:00Welcome to Sipang, Malaysia, for round 17, the final round of the 2000 FIA Formula One
00:00:08World Championship.
00:00:11Michael Schumacher comes here with the world driving title in his pocket, so all eyes are
00:00:16on this prize, the Constructors' Championship.
00:00:19Will it be McLaren, Mercedes, or Scuderia Ferrari?
00:00:23And on down the standings, finishing positions determine purse money, travel money, paddock
00:00:29square footage, and pit locations among the perks of Formula One.
00:00:34Which logo will be on this trophy in Space 2000?
00:00:37Let's find out.
00:00:59Welcome to Sipang for the final event of year 2000.
00:01:07Hi, everyone, I'm Mike Joy, alongside former Ferrari F1 driver and five-time Le Mans winner
00:01:12Derek Bell, Peter Windsor, former team manager at Williams, and at Ferrari will join us from
00:01:18the paddock with news of interest during our Mercedes-Benz pre-race.
00:01:23Here's what's coming up in the fastest half hour of racing on television.
00:01:27Still here from 2000 champion Michael Schumacher, we'll have highlights of the year's final
00:01:34qualifying session.
00:01:37We'll give the Formula One circuit our report cards for the year, and we'll get response
00:01:43from around the paddock to Ferraris winning the championship with Michael Schumacher.
00:01:52So there's the scene along the pit lane as cars are out for their reconnaissance laps.
00:01:57Here in Kuala Lumpur, second year that this brand-new circuit has been in existence.
00:02:02They drew 78,000 spectators here one year ago, and an estimated TV audience of 600 million.
00:02:09Here's how things stand as we come to round 17, the final race of the year.
00:02:14Schumacher is the world champion, Hawken in the runner-up, Barrichello with a win could
00:02:18pit David Coulthard for third in the final driver standings.
00:02:23Now among the constructors, if Ferrari scores just three points, even if McLaren scores
00:02:29a maximum 16 with a win, the tiebreaker would be Ferrari's victories, nine to then McLaren's
00:02:34eight, and Ferrari would win the constructor title by scoring just three points today.
00:02:40But in the constructors overall, Ferrari have a 156 to McLaren's 143.
00:02:46Then the interesting thing then is Williams, but Benetton, Plymouth, Bayer Honda and Jordan
00:02:51all very close, flying there for fourth place, just nothing between them at all.
00:02:55And there is an awful lot at stake there among the perks of Formula One.
00:03:00McLaren and Sauber rolling out for recon laps here on this very new, very smooth and very
00:03:07wide circuit.
00:03:08Peter Windsor asked our new world champion, Michael Schumacher, to describe what he was
00:03:14thinking on that last lap at Suzuka.
00:03:19A very tricky one, because you know that it's raining.
00:03:23You don't know how wet it is approaching the next corner.
00:03:27You know, you have about four seconds when I went into the last corner.
00:03:32I knew it had come down to about two seconds by the end of the lap.
00:03:36And it is very difficult to time everything right, not to do the mistake, but use your
00:03:41advantage to the maximum and drive it home.
00:03:46And what was it like once you did cross the line?
00:03:48What was the first thing you heard in your radio?
00:03:50Yeah, first of all, I heard the team talking to me and just being mad and out of order
00:03:59to some degree.
00:04:00And the other thing was that I think my steering wheel failed functions after I hit it so hard,
00:04:09being maybe broken.
00:04:10So that's the two things that come straight in mind.
00:04:17Michael Schumacher becomes the eighth driver to win a world championship for Scuderia Ferrari.
00:04:22Note the 21 years that have elapsed since Jody Schechter was Ferrari's last champion
00:04:26in 1979.
00:04:30Fangio has five world championships, Alain Prost has four.
00:04:33Here are the drivers.
00:04:34An elite group that Schumacher joins with three apiece.
00:04:37Absolutely amazing, really.
00:04:39You look at the group, they're a very, very eloquent group.
00:04:42You have to look back over the years.
00:04:44Wonderful to be part of that history.
00:04:46Here's a man of the hour.
00:04:47Alexander Wirtz had a tremendous qualifying session.
00:04:50He's had a lackluster season up until these past three races, but he has really shined.
00:04:55That's his car number, not his starting position.
00:04:58For news of the past two weeks, we join Peter Windsor.
00:05:03Great news for Jaguar fans is that after months of negotiation, Neil Ressler has managed to
00:05:07secure the services of the aerodynamicist Mark Hanford.
00:05:10Now, Mark has been under contract to Carl Haas in America for several years, working
00:05:14on the Swift and therefore the Lola designs, but he is to join Jaguar forthwith and therefore
00:05:18will have impact on the 2001 design, so that's great news for all Jaguar fans.
00:05:23Meanwhile, at Renault and Benetton, a little bit of controversy there.
00:05:27The rumour in the pit lane this morning was that Christian Conson, the Renault director,
00:05:30really instrumental for putting the Williams Renault and subsequently the Benetton-Renault
00:05:34deals together, has left the company, but Flavio Briatore has vehemently denied that
00:05:38and says that no, Mr. Conson is staying on, so watch this space.
00:05:42What we do know is that Benetton will be running on Michelin tyres next year, although that
00:05:45has yet to be confirmed, so it'll be Jaguar, Williams and Benetton on Michelin in 2001.
00:05:52Mark Gennet has been approached by Williams to be their third test driver for next year.
00:05:56That's great news for Mark because Telefonica, his telecommunications Spanish backer, pulled
00:06:01out of Formula One last week, so Mark, after a good year with Minardi, does need a break.
00:06:05Johnny Herbert was also approached by Williams, but turned the offer down because he would
00:06:09rather concentrate on getting a drive in America next year, and we'll hear more from
00:06:13Johnny shortly.
00:06:14Finally, the AMT Peugeot engine, currently seen in the Prost, had its debut last week
00:06:19in Spain at Valencia, driven by Pedro de la Rosa.
00:06:22The engine performed beautifully, he loved it, so good news there for Arrows, and it
00:06:26really confirms what we've always thought, at Prost, the problem really is not with the
00:06:30engine.
00:06:31Thanks, Peter.
00:06:32Earlier this weekend, Eddie Jordan showed off some new chassis improvements at Team
00:06:38Jordan.
00:06:39It's a little bit like aerodynamics to me, I have to admit, Mike.
00:06:42I was talking about the car, Derek.
00:06:44I wasn't.
00:06:49Welcome back to Sepang, Malaysia, our Mercedes-Benz pre-race continues with a look at this circuit,
00:06:54no longer the newest F1 circuit, but certainly the most modern.
00:06:58Yeah, it is a great track, very, very smooth indeed, 3.4 miles long, 15 turns, four of
00:07:04them are hairpins.
00:07:05Top speed about 187 miles an hour, more of that, let's go and ride with Jonny Herbert.
00:07:10For one of his last runs on this wonderful circuit, the wonderful new circuit, 185 miles
00:07:18an hour, comes down into turn one, second gear corner feeds the power on gently as he
00:07:23goes in there, you get a lot of understeer through these corners, very difficult to set
00:07:26the cars up because they're forever pushing it, trying to feed that power on as he works
00:07:30his way up through 150, up to something like 185 miles an hour down this long straight.
00:07:36The surface is an interesting, very interesting, part of an unusual canvas, and height changes
00:07:40of course, which you have to contend with.
00:07:42Works his way around that tight corner, 60 miles an hour up to 135, he keeps himself
00:07:47through turn five, here I'm just fluttering a little bit on the rev limiter there, works
00:07:51his way through turn six, back up to 170 miles an hour, then backing down for turn seven,
00:07:58just over 100 miles an hour through this pair of corners as he works his way through there.
00:08:03Surface is very, very smooth, they're running a very, very new tyre this weekend, comes
00:08:09into a very tight corner, actually the tightest on the circuit, first gear, 45 miles an hour,
00:08:14accelerates out, another long turn, this really beats the tyres to death, through turn 11,
00:08:20accelerates up for turn 12, he's back up to about 160 miles an hour, backs off a little
00:08:24bit, fifth gear, works his way into turn 13, gets on, ooh, trying to get it all on
00:08:31there, yes, as he gets out, works on to the back straight, which comes down behind the
00:08:35grandstands, the beautiful grandstands, designed after Hibiscus, the national plant here in
00:08:42Sepang, breaking very, very hard for this tight hairpin bend, second gear, 50 miles
00:08:47an hour, out of that, up he comes, burns his way up past the pits, that was a lap with
00:08:52Johnny Herbert.
00:08:56And there we have track surface, as I said, was smooth, grip level is high, tyre compound,
00:09:00they're using this new soft tyre, tyre wear medium, brake wear medium, maximum throttle
00:09:0460% of the lap, fuel consumption medium as well, but we'll probably see them doing two
00:09:09stops, because they're not sure about this new tyre I think, it's a new tyre obviously
00:09:13to combat Michelin for next year.
00:09:14Right, last year, many of the teams had one driver on a one-stop and one on a two-stop
00:09:19strategy, so I'm not sure if we'll see that today yet or not.
00:09:22Well, let's have a look at highlights of yesterday's qualifying session, a somewhat predictable
00:09:27in its result, at least the first two rows, and somewhat surprising from there on.
00:09:31Well everybody just sat there for 20 minutes waiting for the session to start, they're
00:09:35all looking at notes, and Mika Hakkinen actually did start to get himself ready after about
00:09:3920 minutes, but it is very hot there, Michael Schumacher looks quite cool, very relaxed,
00:09:44Mika does go out, however, for one of the first out there, and naturally collects fastest
00:09:48time.
00:09:49Michael Schumacher, very cool, having just won the World Championship, ultimately he
00:09:52decides a bit of Don Helmet, what does he do, knocked two tenths off Mika's time.
00:09:58That was really it, Michael stayed on pole for the rest of the second, but it was Alexander
00:10:02Wirt who go out, he's been going so well lately, now he knows that he's the test driver at
00:10:06McLaren for next year, fine fifth, Johnny Herbert, out for his last and final qualifying
00:10:11session with Jaguar, he did extremely well, but not as well as he'd hoped.
00:10:15Michael Schumacher goes out again, says, well, let's see if I can knock a bit more
00:10:18time off my fastest time, and he does, knocks another four tenths off, look at that, absolutely
00:10:23amazing, four tenths of his time, Hakkinen goes, looks like I better go out again, but
00:10:27just before he does, Rubens Barrichello goes out, he gets second place, ultimately he's
00:10:32to be fourth.
00:10:33David Coulthard goes out right at the end, and he pushes Barrichello out of second place
00:10:38down to third, and then out goes that man, Mika Hakkinen, two time World Champion, out
00:10:43he goes, and he pushes the time, and he gets second place, incredible stuff, well, Michael
00:10:49Schumacher has a drink for his 32nd pole, let's ask him, is there any pressure?
00:10:54We are racers because we love it, and obviously in this situation it's ideal, there's no pressure,
00:11:01we all know what is the situation, and we just race because we just love it, and you
00:11:08just drive freely to the limit as good as you can, without any thinking behind it, and
00:11:14that gives this extra pleasure you're sometimes looking for.
00:11:18Well Alexander Wurz has been outstanding all weekend, he's talking to Peter Windsor.
00:11:23As last year, great qualifying performance in Malaysia, Alexander, congratulations, was
00:11:27that the Benison qualifying car you haven't seen for a while, or was that the third McLaren
00:11:30you're in this afternoon?
00:11:32Maybe both, the mine and the McLaren, my next year's team, but this was the qualifying car
00:11:38I've never seen before, just in testing, and my team mate used it until the last race,
00:11:43but he was very disappointed that I had qualified him the last couple of races, so he thought
00:11:47it's not the car, but today I showed my team boss especially that it is the car.
00:11:51Well you certainly did that, you also seem to like this circuit, is there one particular
00:11:55corner that gives you a lot of pleasure?
00:11:57Well it's the car, the performance is quite good here, and we can always push, there's
00:12:01a lot of pressure being in Malaysia, and giving this is a little goodbye present to the people,
00:12:06there's still some who support me in Benetton, and thanks for them.
00:12:09Well that's right, and we'll enjoy watching you in your last race for Benetton tomorrow,
00:12:12and very best of luck.
00:12:13Thank you.
00:12:15Very much like the Alexander Wurz of last season, when he was so impressive, and then
00:12:20kind of tailed off this year.
00:12:21Looks like in-car cameras we'll have today, it'll be Johnny Herbert and Rubens Barrichello
00:12:25honouring Johnny's final Formula 1 race, as he heads for perhaps kart next year, and some
00:12:32oval track racing.
00:12:33So Johnny was honoured by Jaguar at a party, for Johnny and his wife Becky, Eddie Irvine
00:12:40gave Johnny a left turn pit board sign, and he got a number of gifts and remembrances,
00:12:46some of which we can't really relate on this program, but all of which were very, very
00:12:51funny, so well done Johnny, on a great career.
00:12:54Welcome back to Supang, as pre-race continues here, and we get set to go, in 13 minutes
00:13:05on our Mercedes-Benz pre-race.
00:13:08Well Johnny Herbert, there's teammate Eddie Irvine, it's Johnny's final day in Formula
00:13:131, here's a look at his career stats, that include three wins and seven podium finishes,
00:13:17driving for six different teams, if you count Stewart and Jaguar as one.
00:13:21Peter asked him to sum up this career.
00:13:24It's been an interesting career, I feel that I did a very good job early on after the accident
00:13:32especially in getting back and having a chance to do Formula 1, I think doing the first race
00:13:37of Benetton in Rio was the best decision I've ever done, and everybody remembered that,
00:13:41and then I was very fortunate that when I got back to Lotus and Peter Collins got me
00:13:46back in that I was then able to stay in it, and there has been three wins, maybe I haven't
00:13:52achieved what I wanted to achieve, but at the end of the day, I've never given up, and
00:13:57I still won't give up until the last lap this weekend.
00:14:01And next year?
00:14:02Yeah, well I'm looking forward to that, I think that's probably the big thing, I'm not
00:14:04going to miss a moment, the end of my career in Formula 1, because I'm looking forward
00:14:08to having a good bash at the Champ Cars Series next year, because that's one of the things
00:14:15I've wanted to achieve in my racing life, and I'm going to go there, guns a-blazing
00:14:21and give it my best, and I'm sure it will work out to be very successful.
00:14:25And we'll look forward to seeing you in America.
00:14:28Thank you.
00:14:29Don't forget, in the middle of his career, he actually went off and won Le Mans as well,
00:14:32just to show that he was fitting well after his terrible accident.
00:14:35Very versatile.
00:14:36There's David Coulthard, wish Johnny well next year.
00:14:41Well, let's give our season's report card, from those of us here at Fox Sports Net.
00:14:48First two choices I think should be fairly obvious.
00:14:51He went from Jensen Hu to on the button, he's my choice for rookie of the year, driver of
00:14:56the year, well that should be fairly obvious, who else but Michael Schumacher, who is our
00:15:00world champion for the year 2000, just a sterling season.
00:15:04Team principal of the year, well Ross Brawn doesn't run Ferrari, but he and Michael sure
00:15:07put that championship together.
00:15:10Team of the year, was Williams that bad last year, or that good this year?
00:15:13It doesn't matter, they've made tremendous strides.
00:15:17Pass of the year, gotta give it to Jacques, what a ballsy move on heights for third at
00:15:21the end of the USGP, didn't work, but hey, so what, value in effort.
00:15:25And Michael's reaction to the fans saluting his USGP win, for me that was the outstanding
00:15:31moment of this season.
00:15:33Peter Windsor, how about from your point of view?
00:15:35Thanks Mike, well rookie of the year, that's a hard one, Jensen Button of course, although
00:15:39I do think Mick Heidfeld did a great job, so special commendation for him.
00:15:43Driver of the year, no question for me, Michael Schumacher.
00:15:45Team principal of the year, I select Flavio Briatore, he snatched Renault engines and
00:15:50Jensen Button mid-season, and that's exactly what team principals are paid to do, he did
00:15:55the deal.
00:15:56I think the team of the year was Williams however, to do what they did with that new
00:15:59BMW engine was truly outstanding.
00:16:02Pass of the year, Micah Hakkinen passed Michael Schumacher, yes he did that at Spa, but he
00:16:06also did it into turn one at Hungary when they were both on new tyres, that was extremely
00:16:10impressive.
00:16:11The most memorable moment of the year for me undoubtedly was that interview with the
00:16:14Schumacher brothers in Brazil, getting them both in the same room and asking them questions
00:16:18and they couldn't leave until I was finished, that was fantastic.
00:16:21Derek, I'm sure you disagree with all of that, go for it.
00:16:25Well I always value your better judgement Peter, you get paid more than me anyway.
00:16:28Rookie of the year Jensen Button without a doubt.
00:16:33Principal of the year, well Michael Schumacher, what more can you say about that man that
00:16:36dragged Ferrari through the last five years.
00:16:38Principal of the year, of course he isn't principal of the team, but I think a major
00:16:41player with all his tactics in the motor racing world this year.
00:16:45Team of the year, well to me it still had to be Ferrari, I think they've done a magnificent
00:16:48job, gelled so well.
00:16:51And pass of the year was Micah Hakkinen overtaking Michael Schumacher with the astonished Zonta
00:16:56in between them in Belgium.
00:16:59The most memorable moment, I think really was Michael Schumacher's emotion at the Italian
00:17:03Grand Prix.
00:17:05A look around the circuit, very new and very beautifully landscaped here.
00:17:1278, nearly 80,000 people expected today.
00:17:17And next year this race will move from the end of the season, it was the penultimate
00:17:21race last year, final race this year, next year it moves to March.
00:17:26Our next year's schedule has some gaps of more than one weekend.
00:17:29We start in Australia, go to Malaysia, Brazil, San Marino, Spain, Austria takes what was
00:17:34the British Grand Prix date, they flip dates.
00:17:37Remember the reigns in Britain, Monaco, Canada, Europe, France, Britain will be in mid-July
00:17:42ahead of Germany.
00:17:45Then August, there's that break, and then August 19th, Hungary, and then Belgium, Italy,
00:17:50the United States, and just one race in October, Japan.
00:17:54How will the driver line-ups look?
00:17:55Ferrari and McLaren, just like this year, Montoya comes to Williams, Button moves over
00:17:59to Benetton, Penne to BAR alongside Villeneuve, no change at Jordan.
00:18:06Arrows, a lot of question marks further down the grid, Berti will join, Luciano Berti will
00:18:11join Irvine at Jaguar, Denise may go to Prost, and Minardi, well, who brings the dough is
00:18:17who goes.
00:18:18Yet to be seen.
00:18:20It's a beautiful hibiscus that they've designed from their natural flower.
00:18:24It's the most beautiful, elegant grandstand facility anywhere in the world.
00:18:34So we're getting close to the start of the final event of the season as Mika Hakkinen
00:18:37dons his helmet.
00:18:38A little look behind the scenes at one of the briefing rooms where the teams and their
00:18:44drivers go to debrief after each session.
00:18:46We'll be right back.
00:18:48This is brought to you by Mercedes-Benz.
00:18:51Mercedes-Benz is the official safety car of Formula 1.
00:18:54Visit them on the web at www.mbusa.com.
00:18:59And by mobile 1.
00:19:01Nothing outperforms mobile 1.
00:19:04We'd like to hear from you.
00:19:06Send your comments to Formula 1 at foxsports.net.
00:19:16Jordan getting set to go.
00:19:17We saw the grid girls in their native costume parading into position.
00:19:23As we draw closer to the start, just five and a half minutes away, we asked folks around
00:19:27the Formula 1 paddock their thoughts on Ferrari's world championship.
00:19:34I'm very thankful to the team.
00:19:36I mean, to Ferrari to have given us the possibility of working well, to give me the possibility
00:19:44of building the team I wanted to build, all that I realised.
00:19:49But on the other side, I mean, I don't want to be too emotional because I think probably
00:19:55that was the weakest point of Ferrari in Italy, to be too emotional.
00:19:59So I just want to keep the feet on the ground.
00:20:02I feel that way, you know, it brings again more interest for the sport from the public.
00:20:08So we will see again more people watching the Grand Prix racing and different countries.
00:20:15So the Formula 1 is going to grow, you know, it's going to be again in the future, more
00:20:20difficult to walk on the street and not signing autographs all the time.
00:20:24You can feel already less pressure within the team and it's something that they've been
00:20:30waiting for such a long time.
00:20:31I mean, if you think, OK, 21 years, but then Jean Todt, eight years, Michael, five.
00:20:38So it's gone a long time back.
00:20:40So it's much less pressure within the team and I think they will do a better job just
00:20:44because of that.
00:20:45I personally think that they will just, I wouldn't say you ain't seen nothing yet, but
00:20:51I think they will just unfortunately attempt to get stronger and stronger as a team and
00:20:57they will be very tough to beat.
00:20:59They're on a roll.
00:21:01Ferrari is Formula 1 and Formula 1 is Ferrari.
00:21:05So now that they've got to the top, everybody's happy and they'll go on and do it again and
00:21:10they'll be even happier.
00:21:11Well, I think it's a little bit of a weight off our shoulders because this thing of not,
00:21:17Ferrari having failed for 21 years, which is not fair because I think Ferrari have done
00:21:20very well over those 21 years.
00:21:22They just haven't won the driver's championship.
00:21:24So there was this weight on our shoulders.
00:21:25It's gone now.
00:21:26I think everybody's somewhat relieved for Ferrari.
00:21:32Jody Schecter's slightly disappointed because he doesn't have the record now of the last
00:21:35Ferrari world champion.
00:21:37But I think it was a very justified win.
00:21:40I think it was good for Schumacher to get his third world championship.
00:21:44I think he deserves it.
00:21:45It was good.
00:21:46You know, he's 21, 22 years, Ferrari have no championship, I believe is a good release
00:21:52for everybody.
00:21:53There's a lot of talk about it evening things out for next season, but that would be presuming
00:21:59that it wasn't even this year.
00:22:01And how would I know, you know, so we just come back, tune in next year and another exciting
00:22:07installment of Formula One.
00:22:09Honestly, all I can say is that Ferrari winning the world championship is the most important
00:22:13thing to Formula One at this present time.
00:22:15I think it'll add a lot to the series, but I think David's exactly right.
00:22:19Tune in next year for another exciting installment.
00:22:22And that's what we all hope for.
00:22:24A look around the circuit, those hillsides full of spectators as we draw close to the
00:22:32start of the grand prix of Malaysia, the final race of 2000, and it's coming up next.
00:22:45Welcome to Malaysia as the grid begins to clear as we get set for the formation lap.
00:22:52And then the start of the final race of 2000.
00:22:56Let's have a look at today's weather.
00:23:00Break the thermometer, 96 degrees.
00:23:04Humidity 57%.
00:23:05They were talking about a chance of rain, but at these temperatures, that would be welcome.
00:23:10Yeah, I mean, it's just so hot in those cars, you can't believe.
00:23:13We did a sports car race there just a few years ago, and when we got out, we had to
00:23:16put our feet in buckets of ice and our hands to bring our body temperature down.
00:23:19It is desperately wearing, and it's only the survival of the fittest.
00:23:24Getting set for the formation lap.
00:23:27Michael Schumacher has fitted new rear tires, we're told, to his car.
00:23:31There he is on the right of your screen on pole.
00:23:34Mika Hackenen not quite alongside on the outside of the first row to your left.
00:23:43Formation lap underway.
00:23:44Let's show you how they'll start for this final race of the 2000 season.
00:23:48For Schumacher, it's his ninth pole of the season and the 32nd of his career.
00:23:52And Mika Hackenen pretty disappointed.
00:23:53He'll be nearly half a second slower than Michael.
00:23:56Look at David Coulthard, only two one-hundredths of a second off of Mika's time.
00:24:00And Ruben's Barrichello was disappointed, but my goodness, he has had a bad cold all
00:24:04weekend.
00:24:05The man most thrilled is Alexander Wurz.
00:24:08He's exceeded everyone's expectations, lining up fifth.
00:24:10And Jack Villeneuve, he was lucky he only got one run before his engines started to
00:24:13play up.
00:24:15Eddie Irvine was frustrated.
00:24:16He's seventh, but he's only five-hundredths of a second out of fifth.
00:24:20And Ralf Schumacher said he was struggling to set up all day.
00:24:24Ghiarno Trulli says in retrospect he should have used a different tire strategy.
00:24:27He's ninth.
00:24:28Frenzen, he was tenth.
00:24:30Throttle linkage problems beset him.
00:24:33Riccardo Zonta said he couldn't develop a flow of the course and lines up eleventh.
00:24:37Johnny Herbert out of the steering car, plus he has his wife as flag waver right beside
00:24:42him on the grid.
00:24:43Right.
00:24:44Very nice.
00:24:45Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:24:47Dismal day.
00:24:48Not well prepared.
00:24:49Was that him or the car?
00:24:50He's thirteenth.
00:24:51And Pedro La Rosa just blamed it on the tires.
00:24:52Josper Stappen had problems with his car, had to go to the T-car.
00:24:55He lines up fifteenth.
00:24:56Jenson Button, a lack of practice time, relegates him to sixteenth.
00:25:00Remember, it's his first time here.
00:25:02Mika Salo did not get a clean lap as the Saubers and the Prosts fight for down on the grid.
00:25:09Jean Alesi's dismal nightmare season continues in eighteenth.
00:25:13Nick Hyde felt very disappointed.
00:25:14Pedro Diniz, fighting gobs of understeer, lines up twentieth, but the day was saved
00:25:20for them by the minorities.
00:25:21They will line up in row eleven.
00:25:23Good job by Marc Genet, who shaves lots off of his last year's qualifying time.
00:25:28He continues to improve, but look at Matsukane.
00:25:31He is almost two seconds behind his teammate in a disastrous day.
00:25:35So that's the lineup as we ride back around with Rubens.
00:25:40He and Johnny Herbert will provide our in-car views today.
00:25:43Eddie Irvine has been complaining on his radio about Jacques Villeneuve's tyres.
00:25:46He says they're nearly bald before the start, which of course goes to show that probably
00:25:50these bald tyres do work exceptionally well.
00:25:53Michael Schumacher has just put brand new tyres on the back of his car.
00:25:56We didn't explain this earlier, we haven't had time yet, but in fact they have scrub
00:25:59fronts and brand new rears, and this seems to make a much better balance for those first
00:26:04few laps.
00:26:05This is what they nearly all did in qualifying.
00:26:10The last time that only two manufacturers have won every race was 1988.
00:26:14That's when McLaren nearly swept the season.
00:26:17Just the Ferrari win in the Italian Grand Prix kept them from doing so.
00:26:21Ferrari and McLaren are the only two constructors to win so far this year.
00:26:27So constructors' championship on the line.
00:26:30Ferrari needs three points today to clinch it.
00:26:32McLaren still with a slim chance and a big fight for fourth in the championship.
00:26:37Is Michael Schumacher going to get a better start than he's had all year?
00:26:40Whoa!
00:26:41Mika edged away but then stopped, so that should be a legal start.
00:26:54Schumacher drafting tightly, then David inverts his up for fourth.
00:26:57Here comes Barrichello on the inside, squeezes in there!
00:27:04Schumacher well shut out there, well blocked out.
00:27:07He tried to run with the back of a hackadant, but he didn't make it into the corner.
00:27:10David Courtauld got by him, both the Ferraris up there.
00:27:13Big pileup at the top of the screen on the left.
00:27:15Three cars get together.
00:27:16Villeneuve gets another tremendous start, and look at the carnage.
00:27:22One of the arrows off the road, wheel of somebody bouncing down the road with suspension attached
00:27:27to it.
00:27:28So they could well have to stop this race.
00:27:32He's just trying to get away after he's had his lurid spin there.
00:27:42Here's a look, let's see what happened.
00:27:44Top of the screen.
00:27:47There just wasn't enough room back there, was there?
00:27:50Oh dear, look at that arrows.
00:27:54That was a nasty moment there.
00:27:56I think there's a loose wheel from a Sauber.
00:28:00And we'll sort out the carnage in a bit.
00:28:02The problem is, is the debris, you know, it's the carbon fibre that's left lying on the
00:28:06track, which these slivers of fibre can just ruin the tyre, just like in a split second.
00:28:14It's an over to one of the Prosts.
00:28:16They're having such a terrible time, no points at all.
00:28:19Oh, it's a lazy app.
00:28:21Safety car is out on the track because of that debris on the track.
00:28:25They've got to clear it up.
00:28:27If you had scripted, if Stephen King had written the season for John Alessi, I don't think
00:28:32he could have made it any more nightmarish than it's been.
00:28:37Now, here's another look.
00:28:39Already car is off.
00:28:41Yeah, that one at the back is facing the wrong direction, that arrow.
00:28:44So he's trying to get it pointed the right way, hence the smoke.
00:28:47And there is a talk about Mika Hakkinen is under investigation because of the start he
00:28:51made, because he did jump the start.
00:28:53That would be a sad way for this race to start.
00:28:56I saw it, Derek.
00:28:57He did move.
00:28:58There was movement from Hakkinen's side of the grid.
00:29:01But as David Coulthard explained after he got penalised at the US Grand Prix, if he
00:29:05had come to a complete stop, it likely would not have been a foul.
00:29:09And Mika did come to a stop before the lights went out.
00:29:12Yeah, just coming to the stop before the lights go out, I think, is the critical thing.
00:29:15But it's such a split second.
00:29:17I thought they held those lights on rather a long time myself.
00:29:19I felt sorry for the drivers.
00:29:20You could hear them revving to death.
00:29:22And in that heat, that isn't funny.
00:29:24The watchers just don't like it.
00:29:26De La Rosa, Heitfeld and Donitz now, we're told, rather than Lazy.
00:29:34Although it was pointed out as Lazy's car.
00:29:41There's Donitz.
00:29:45Who had a great time the other day for Sauber in Penang.
00:29:48They ran a Formula 1 car through the streets of the city in front of 10,000 people.
00:29:54Pedro had a much better time than he's had today.
00:29:56At least he can slide the car around and have any problems and get hit by people.
00:30:02Look at Wurz, right up there.
00:30:03He did have another sensational start.
00:30:05Jacques Villeneuve as well.
00:30:07In fact, that is exactly how they went off the line, is how they went off qualifying on that road.
00:30:12For a moment, Villeneuve was ahead of Wurz, and actually it was up alongside Barrichello.
00:30:17So it really took a lot of aggressive manoeuvres by Barrichello to get fourth spot back.
00:30:22Watch especially Barrichello and the white car of Villeneuve.
00:30:29Has little problems with the host feed there.
00:30:33Oh, Jenson Button had sensational runs.
00:30:38Look, everybody, now watch on the left side.
00:30:40Villeneuve comes all the way over to the right side and comes up alongside the blue car of Wurz,
00:30:44who blocks out Barrichello.
00:30:46Barrichello says, never mind, I'm going to get in there.
00:30:48Villeneuve comes around almost up even with Michael.
00:30:51He did a sensational job.
00:30:52He's had some wonderful starts.
00:30:54They've worked on it very hard and nobody knows quite why,
00:30:56but both the McLarens seem to have outrageous starts as well.
00:30:59Both the Ferraris left behind there.
00:31:01Now, the guys are moving around here, trying to keep those tyre temperatures up,
00:31:05because they didn't have much chance to keep them up because they didn't run any laps.
00:31:08So the tyres are warm from when they actually were on their tyre warmers before they went onto the grid.
00:31:15So the tyres could be getting quite cool.
00:31:17I know it's 100 degrees out there, so they shouldn't drop below that.
00:31:19No.
00:31:27Safety car in the pits.
00:31:29Back under green.
00:31:35So they're saying Heidfeld, now saying Heidfeld denies out of race.
00:31:42And Pedro de la Rosa.
00:31:50Oh, look at Schumacher going, trying to go down the inside as well.
00:31:53Looked like they let Coulthard by.
00:31:55Here's the start again.
00:31:59Look at that, though.
00:32:00Both Ferraris had dismal starts.
00:32:02Look at Barry Kellow falling back into the clutches of Wurz and Villeneuve.
00:32:06But what a wonderful...
00:32:07Look at Barry Kellow come down the inside of Wurz as they come into Turn 1.
00:32:11That's the car on the immediate left side of your picture.
00:32:14He goes by. Villeneuve goes by.
00:32:17There's Villeneuve right there, almost at third place.
00:32:19Yes, but subsequently lost it.
00:32:21Yes.
00:32:22Well, he's outside on the dirtier part of the racetrack there.
00:32:26And there, Barry Kellow comes right back up alongside him.
00:32:29Looks like Michael's having a go there.
00:32:32He's got by. He's got by Haakonen, has he?
00:32:35And here comes Barry Kellow.
00:32:36Now, the thing is, the battle really for this race is can...
00:32:41Is can the Ferraris just get these valuable points?
00:32:44Oh dear, one of the McLarens really had a close call then.
00:32:47Looked like he locked them up pretty bad.
00:32:49And remember, he's got Alexander Wurz right behind that McLaren.
00:32:54Now, there could be a reason for this.
00:32:55It's the fact that, of course, if Haakonen was to get a penalty,
00:32:59it would mean that they'd want the other car to be well ahead and get a nice lead on.
00:33:03Here we go. Let's take a look at this.
00:33:06Good overtake.
00:33:07Who said there's no overtaking in Formula 1?
00:33:09That was an overtaking maneuver.
00:33:11Nice move, Robins.
00:33:13But Haakonen obviously was asked to move over and let David go by
00:33:17because David needs these points.
00:33:24Well, and the hope would have been that Haakonen could have held up the Ferraris,
00:33:27but that has not proven to be the case.
00:33:31Makes you wonder whether Mika Haakonen has, in fact, got a problem with his car,
00:33:34whether they found something out on the telemetry back in the pits
00:33:36and they're telling him, you know, to let David go.
00:33:38Don't do anything about it.
00:33:40There was thoughts where maybe he was set there to hold the Ferraris back,
00:33:43but I don't think so at all.
00:33:44Mika might have had a problem.
00:33:46It might have been to do with his, almost like a double start he made.
00:33:49But I don't think so at all.
00:33:51I don't think so at all.
00:33:52I don't think so at all.
00:33:53I don't think so at all.
00:33:54I don't think so at all.
00:33:55I don't think so at all.
00:33:56I don't think so at all.
00:33:57I don't think so at all.
00:33:58It might have been to do with his, almost like a double start he made.
00:34:06I've done such a poor job of speculating all year.
00:34:08Let me keep my record intact.
00:34:10Could David be on light tanks and Mika on full tanks?
00:34:14Well, there you go.
00:34:15We won't know, will we, for that 17 laps?
00:34:17And that will be proven wrong as usual, perhaps.
00:34:23Look at Burt's doing a stupendous job there,
00:34:25hanging in with that Benetton,
00:34:27He's had such a terrible time this year. He's been really badly, I believe, let down by the team.
00:34:31I think he was totally demoralized when Fabio Briatore came along.
00:34:35Um, and he just never got the equipment right the way through until suddenly Fizzi Keller does a good job in the United States Grand Prix.
00:34:40Yeah.
00:34:41And of course, uh, suddenly they go, oh, maybe Virch isn't so bad after all.
00:34:45And suddenly Virch is the flavor of the month.
00:34:47And there he is getting the best car.
00:34:49Well, here's what happens when you're no longer world champion.
00:34:52Mika's just been handed a 10-second penalty for jumping the start.
00:34:55We'll get a 10-second, uh, stop-and-hold penalty.
00:35:00Because the stewards have judged that he has jumped the start.
00:35:03His teammate, David Coulthard, is leading after four laps.
00:35:06You're watching Formula One on Fox Sports Net.
00:35:13Welcome back to CPANG. Mike Joy with Derek Bell and Peter Windsor.
00:35:16Watching David Coulthard, the leader from McLaren Mercedes.
00:35:19His teammate, Mika Hakkinen, has been in the pits for his 10-second penalty for jumping the start.
00:35:26And remember, McLaren needed to put maximum points on the board today to have a chance at the Constructors' Championship.
00:35:34And now with Hakkinen coming back out not in a point position makes that job that much harder.
00:35:43I tell you, when you go in for a stop-and-go that early on in the race, it puts you well behind because there's a lot of people to overtake.
00:35:49As the race opens up, of course, and they used to take longer with their deliberation.
00:35:53As they did, I think, in David's case, the U.S. Grand Prix.
00:35:57It meant that when David went in, he actually didn't lose that much time or that many places.
00:36:02Mika's lost a bunch of places.
00:36:04And Jarno Trulli's had problems. The Jordan driver started in 9th, now finds himself back in 19th place.
00:36:1222 seconds off the lead.
00:36:15Irvine, a very good 6th place.
00:36:18As those three verts fill over, Irvine are very, very close up.
00:36:22Now, everything rests with McLaren on David Coulthard's shoulders.
00:36:26He hasn't been that happy this weekend with the car.
00:36:29Well, certainly during qualifying, he hasn't been very happy at all with it.
00:36:34David Coulthard, our leader, his teammate Mika Häkkinen, a 10-second penalty for jumping the start.
00:36:39So it's McLaren, Ferrari, Ferrari, Benetton, BAR, Jaguar.
00:36:48And this is Frentzen in.
00:36:51You have to remark that Frentzen did have a spin just now.
00:36:54He already went off the track.
00:36:56He's got a little bit of a spin.
00:36:58And this is Frentzen in.
00:37:00You have to remark that Frentzen did have a spin just now.
00:37:03He already went off the road.
00:37:05So he probably came in to check his tires.
00:37:07There must have been some damage.
00:37:09Probably the reason he went off the road is he probably had possible deflating tires.
00:37:13Something like that would affect his handling.
00:37:15And what a season for Jordan.
00:37:17Last year, a strong No. 3 in the World Championship.
00:37:20Right now, they are 6th.
00:37:22And with both cars now at the back of the field,
00:37:26not in a good position to move past BAR or Benetton
00:37:30in the final constructors' tally.
00:37:34Of course, next year is very, very important for Jordan
00:37:37because as you all well know,
00:37:39Honda are very interested in taking over BAR's racing team.
00:37:43And they would like to purchase it possibly at the end of next year,
00:37:46as early as that, or during that following season.
00:37:48Which would mean that they would put all their efforts into their own team
00:37:52rather than that of Jordan,
00:37:53who, of course, they will be supplying with factory Honda engines next year.
00:37:57And that plot gets even thicker
00:37:59with the news that Mugen is not really...
00:38:01They don't want to leave Formula 1.
00:38:03They want to find a team to support as well.
00:38:07Well, Formula 1 certainly needs these engine manufacturers in there.
00:38:11One has to remark, David Coulthard gradually eking away bit by bit
00:38:15from Michael Schumacher.
00:38:16But Schumacher, really, he just wants to get back
00:38:19constructors' championship, which is our loss, I'm afraid.
00:38:21But there's still a long way to go.
00:38:23And when they come in for their pit stops,
00:38:25I think then it will certainly liven up.
00:38:27And as you said, Mike,
00:38:28maybe David Coulthard is on a lighter fuel load.
00:38:33Remember, Coulthard could lose third in the driver's championship
00:38:38should Barrichello win and David score no points.
00:38:42But David's certainly trying to make sure that that doesn't happen.
00:38:45Right.
00:38:46Now, whether, of course, Michael Schumacher will move over,
00:38:48which I believe he would.
00:38:49He'd move over to let Barrichello by if that situation arose.
00:38:52But it's no good.
00:38:53Barrichello isn't within striking distance at the moment.
00:38:55So there's no point in him considering letting Barrichello go through.
00:38:58But believe me, if you've got a cold or a bad head problem
00:39:02like Barrichello's had and you're in this climate, it isn't fun.
00:39:09Lose third in the driver's championship should Barrichello win
00:39:13and David score no points.
00:39:16But David's certainly trying to make sure that that doesn't happen.
00:39:19Right.
00:39:20Now, whether, of course, Michael Schumacher will move over,
00:39:22which I believe he would.
00:39:23He'd move over to let Barrichello by if that situation arose.
00:39:26But it's no good.
00:39:27Barrichello isn't within striking distance at the moment.
00:39:29So there's no point in him considering letting Barrichello go through.
00:39:32But believe me, if you've got a cold or a bad head problem
00:39:36like Barrichello's had and you're in this climate,
00:39:39it isn't fun racing in those conditions.
00:39:41High heat, high humidity.
00:39:43And is this Frentzen again for the second time in the pit lane?
00:39:47He says, good night.
00:39:48I'm parking it at the end of the 2000 season.
00:39:51And he'll be quite glad it's over.
00:39:55He will, of course, be back with Jordan next year, as will Jarno Trulli.
00:39:59Benetton holds the option on Trulli for the 2002 season.
00:40:04And it's, although everyone knows that Flavio Briatore is likely to exercise it.
00:40:09He went public with that.
00:40:11Kind of makes you wonder what kind of motivation Fisichella has next year
00:40:14when he knows he's a lame duck driver before the season even starts.
00:40:18As in 2002, it'll be Trulli and Button at Benetton.
00:40:23I'm amazed the way Virts, Villeneuve, Irvine, Zonta,
00:40:27and even Johnny Herbert are hanging in there.
00:40:29Not that far behind the two Ferraris.
00:40:35But with an ambient temperature of 98 degrees,
00:40:39does that alter your race strategy as how hard you push from the start?
00:40:43I can't help thinking, but you do actually pace yourself just a little bit.
00:40:46But it's strange, you know, you build yourself up, you're thinking about it.
00:40:49This race is going to be the hottest, most humid race of the year.
00:40:52I'm going to pace myself.
00:40:53And when you get there, in fact, you're in such good shape
00:40:56and your sort of mental attitude has overcome everything
00:40:58that you actually drive a very hard race.
00:41:00And it doesn't really affect you until you get out.
00:41:02And then you virtually want to collapse.
00:41:05Frenson out of the car and out of the season.
00:41:09You see Virts and you'll see Villeneuve just poking into the picture there occasionally.
00:41:19It makes you wonder what Benetton have been up to this year
00:41:22when they can then produce a car for Virts that will do this.
00:41:25He wasn't even allowed to have a spare car at the United States Grand Prix
00:41:29and other Grand Prixs because that was set up already for Fizikella to drive.
00:41:33And just because Fizikella didn't arrive in time for one of their practice sessions,
00:41:37wasn't there for one of the hospitality days,
00:41:39he was sort of switched around a bit and he was out of favour
00:41:42and suddenly Virts is the golden boy.
00:41:44But I do think it has a lot to do with the fact, Mike,
00:41:47that Virts has been signed up by the McLaren.
00:41:49It's given him that confidence when everybody was talking badly about him,
00:41:52given him the confidence to make a move.
00:41:53If McLaren want me as a test driver, then I must be all right.
00:41:56Right. Well, as he told Peter, he said, well, it's the car.
00:41:58If I have the good car, I can do a good job.
00:42:01And certainly he's done that.
00:42:03Having a great run here today in fourth place.
00:42:06Peter, what about the weather here in Malaysia this weekend?
00:42:11Yes, heat very much an issue here at the Malaysian Grand Prix.
00:42:14Incredible humidity and ambient temperatures.
00:42:16And guess what?
00:42:17Next March, when the Formula One circus comes back to Malaysia
00:42:20as round two of the 2001 World Championship, it will be even hotter.
00:42:24So the team's really using this as a pre-March 2001 heat test.
00:42:30Well, that's pretty tough, though, Peter, isn't it?
00:42:32I mean, to have to keep putting up with this heat every time we go to Malaysia.
00:42:36There's just no let up.
00:42:37It's right in the tropics.
00:42:43Ten laps complete.
00:42:44David Coulthard now out to a 5.3 second lead on Michael Schumacher.
00:42:51I don't know.
00:42:52I think my theory about light tanks is starting to hold a little weight.
00:42:55Derek, what do you think?
00:42:56I think you're absolutely right, Mike.
00:42:58You know, it wouldn't surprise me at all because they need David to get out there.
00:43:01They need him out there.
00:43:02They needed somebody to go and try and break maybe one of the Ferraris
00:43:05and be the tortoise and the hare.
00:43:06And I think that's what you may well be seeing with him.
00:43:10So, sorry, I'm sorry.
00:43:11But Virts has now dropped back a little bit more from the Ferraris.
00:43:14I think Ferraris have got to feel the circuit.
00:43:17They got used to the handling of the car.
00:43:19Remember, they did.
00:43:20These tires are quite special.
00:43:22These tires are out there.
00:43:23These are tires they're going to use next year in competing against Michelin.
00:43:27That's a very long lens, but it does look as if Barrichello is beginning
00:43:31to catch up Michael Schumacher.
00:43:36Third to second.
00:43:38Frentzen out of the race with no power steering.
00:43:41He had throttle link problems in qualifying.
00:43:43And now a power steering failure puts him out of the event.
00:43:50So David Cotard leads.
00:43:52So David Cotard leads.
00:43:56Ferrari second with Schumacher and third with Barrichello.
00:44:01Then Benetton for Virts.
00:44:03VAR for Villeneuve.
00:44:05And Jaguar for Irvine.
00:44:11Back to the Malaysian Grand Prix where David Cotard's lead
00:44:14dipped to four point eight seconds and then picked up to five point six
00:44:17this last time by.
00:44:19Nightly at ten and twelve, it's the National Sports Report,
00:44:22the show that gives you a complete wrap up of all the day's sports news
00:44:25with internet interaction, scores, highlights, opinions and analysis.
00:44:30Nightly at ten and twelve on Fox Sportsnet.
00:44:37Well, we see David still just inching away.
00:44:39Not that much from Michael Schumacher, but he makes you wonder
00:44:41whether perhaps David, as you said, Mike, is on that two stop strategy.
00:44:45He certainly did have tremendous move with those first couple of laps
00:44:48when he was just working his way through the traffic.
00:44:50You can't do that with a with a big load of fuel.
00:44:53So Michael, Michael Schumacher, one imagine knows something that we don't.
00:44:57And that is possibly that he could well, of course, be on it on a one stop himself.
00:45:01We look at this.
00:45:03McLaren getting well out of shape.
00:45:08That would have lost some time.
00:45:10Well, to pick up on the side, that was obviously Mika Hakkinen.
00:45:13Yes.
00:45:14And Hakkinen is back in 16th place.
00:45:16Derek, after spruing that ten second penalty.
00:45:19He's forty six seconds off the lead.
00:45:23Now from Wurz in fourth place on back.
00:45:25Look at how the gap shrink, because that's a really great battle going on.
00:45:28And it has a lot to do with where these teams end up in the Constructors Championship.
00:45:34Benetton just ahead of B.A.R.
00:45:36by two points and one position on the racetrack.
00:45:40And this is really where this battle is between Benetton, B.A.R.
00:45:43and Jordan.
00:45:44Well, Jordan really are out of the picture, so we're not going to see them
00:45:47battling for that fourth place, which last year they had the coveted third
00:45:50place in the Constructors Championship is down now to between Benetton
00:45:54and B.A.R.
00:45:55Honda.
00:45:56And they're all fairly close together.
00:46:00Jarno truly pitted while we were away for his second time.
00:46:04And so he's about he's back in 18.
00:46:07It seems like David Coulthard may well be going in for a fuel stop,
00:46:10which actually is remarkably early, because I would have thought
00:46:13that they wouldn't have gone into about lap 20.
00:46:16And I would have thought he's a little in lap 15.
00:46:18It's a bit soon to go in for tires and fuel, but it seems like they're getting
00:46:22prepared in the McLaren pit.
00:46:26He's got to go a lot quicker than this, though, when he comes out.
00:46:29Because he's not making much headway.
00:46:31He's going to lose 20 to 25.
00:46:33He's going to lose 25 seconds when he goes in for his pit stop.
00:46:36There's Verts in the blue car, bottom of your screen.
00:46:38He's starting to fall back into the clutches of Villeneuve.
00:46:40He's been complaining to the team of oversteer.
00:46:42Well, that makes a change, because the one problem they are having here
00:46:45or do generally around this circuit is they get push or they get understeer.
00:46:48That's when the front of the car slides away from you.
00:46:51The more as you feed the power into the front of the car,
00:46:54the more the front of the car slides away from you.
00:46:56The more as you feed the power on the front, it just slides out,
00:46:59slides out, and you can't get on the power.
00:47:01It's the most frustrating thing, trying to feed the power on,
00:47:04and the front just wants to go off the road.
00:47:08Ralf Schumacher, look, right back in 16th place.
00:47:10He must be having a bad problem, a major problem.
00:47:12He started 8th, and he just hasn't been anywhere at all.
00:47:16Meanwhile, his teammate Jenson Button, who started 16th, is up to 11th.
00:47:20Now, out of the race, initially, we'd identified Jonah Lacey.
00:47:24It was not. It was Nick Heidfeld.
00:47:26It was the Prost involved in that Lap 1 crash with Denis and De La Rosa.
00:47:29And then Frentzen with the power-steering problem is out.
00:47:32Truly has made two pit stops and is effectively out of the race.
00:47:39And David Coulthard just hasn't made that big inroads,
00:47:42and he's only 5.6 seconds ahead of Schumacher,
00:47:45and he should have been substantially more than that on that first lap.
00:47:48He should have been substantially more than that on that lighter fuel load
00:47:51if he's going in now, unless Schumacher is going in as well,
00:47:54which I somehow don't think he will be.
00:48:08Mika Hakkinen battling...
00:48:12No, that's Marc Janais about to be overtaken.
00:48:18This is rather like the United States Grand Prix.
00:48:20Mika Hakkinen had a dickens of a job to get by the Menardis.
00:48:23Do you remember, Jonah? That's a part of the race.
00:48:25And in fact, there were some plates made that the Menardis had got in the way
00:48:28and should have been penalized for it.
00:48:31But, you know, the guy's having his own race as well.
00:48:33Now, Mika, with all that power,
00:48:34should be able to get by that two-year-old Ford engine.
00:48:38Now, come on, slipstream.
00:48:40Slipping down behind him. Is he going to dip by at the end of it?
00:48:42Come on, Mika, you've got to do a bit more than that.
00:48:45Because it's a hairpin.
00:48:46He should be able to get by.
00:48:47Maybe down the next straight as he comes by the pits.
00:48:50I don't blame Jonah for not moving over.
00:48:52I mean, this is a battle for position.
00:48:56It may be 14th position, but it is a battle for position.
00:48:59Oh, yeah. No, it's genuine.
00:49:00He can't be held up. Mika's going to look down the inside.
00:49:02No, Jonah's saying not tonight, Josephine.
00:49:05And here's... Right there, Derek, is everything that's amiss with Formula 1.
00:49:10When a faster car can't pass a car that qualified two seconds slower.
00:49:16Something is wrong with the way that these cars rely on aerodynamic grip versus mechanical grip.
00:49:21Well, there you go.
00:49:22Mika is very close behind him as they go, because Ralf Schumacher is right with him.
00:49:26But Ralf, as I said just now, is obviously having problems.
00:49:29But Mika, look at that.
00:49:30Even that old... I shouldn't say that old Ford engine.
00:49:33It's a wonderful Ford engine, but this is the Stewart engine of two years ago
00:49:37that Bernardi paid a substantial amount of money for.
00:49:40And Mika Hakkinen is having a wild job to get by him.
00:49:43And the problem is right here.
00:49:45As Hakkinen closes up on Jonah exiting the corner,
00:49:48there's not enough air going over Hakkinen's front wings to give him enough downforce.
00:49:53And the car would slide, and he'd end up taking chances.
00:49:57Yeah, he took chances, got on a lot of dust.
00:49:59What happened is he got on the white cement dust that was laid down for a while from a previous race.
00:50:04And of course, that dust was off the line.
00:50:06Mika had to go down that off-line to go by, and that's why he suffered from it.
00:50:13He'll be so relieved to go by Jeunet.
00:50:16Well, Jeunet put up a fair fight.
00:50:18And, you know, I started out two years ago as an outspoken critic of his,
00:50:22but I've really come to admire the progress that he's made.
00:50:25And there's really, you know, blue flags.
00:50:29You take your blue flags and stuff them, because you're under no requirement
00:50:33to move over for a driver that you're battling for position.
00:50:36If Hakkinen was lapping him, yes, he'd give way and do so fairly.
00:50:39But in a battle like that, well, he held Hakkinen off.
00:50:43And I'm sure the Ferrari fans are delirious, and the McLaren fans are upset.
00:50:46But, gee, that's racing.
00:50:48That certainly is racing.
00:50:50But anyway, he's got by him, and there we are.
00:50:52So, we're here setting up for a pit stop.
00:50:54McLarens were setting up, but you're not allowed to sit out in the pit road
00:50:57for more than one lap before the car comes in.
00:50:59So, I guess they were just getting things tidy.
00:51:02Because David hasn't gone in yet, and they're up to like 17 laps.
00:51:06And David, if he's on the two-stop track,
00:51:09he'll be in roundabout lap 20, 21, or 22.
00:51:14Now, last year, which is all the history we have at this track to go on,
00:51:18the last of the two-stop drivers came in at lap 25.
00:51:23So, that's, of course, tires are different now.
00:51:26Weather's a little bit different.
00:51:28So, your mileage may be different.
00:51:30David Coulthard leads in Malaysia.
00:51:32The two Ferraris, the Benetton, the B.A.R., and the Jaguar.
00:51:38Back to Sepang, where David Coulthard has made his first pit stop of the day.
00:51:48Brings him right back onto the track in a bunch of traffic.
00:51:54But Coulthard, on a two-stop strategy, has made the first of those stops at lap 17.
00:51:59Mika Salo and John Lacey were in the pits at lap 16.
00:52:05Let's have a look at the stop.
00:52:12Slightly scrubbed. They're all scrubbed tires.
00:52:16Very quick.
00:52:19Rev limiter on.
00:52:21Nobody can wait for that white line to come up.
00:52:23Out he goes.
00:52:25But he did lose a lot of time.
00:52:27I mean, not lose, but I mean, it cost him time.
00:52:30No doubt.
00:52:31And he will be actually back not far from Mika Hakkinen right now.
00:52:35Because, remember, Mika had a stop.
00:52:37He had a ten-second stop.
00:52:38He'd probably be ahead of Mika because he had four seconds less in the pits than Mika did.
00:52:46Remember, Ferrari needs but three points to win their second straight Constructors' Championship.
00:52:52And right now, they're on position for maximum points as Michael Schumacher lowers the fastest lap of the race standard.
00:53:00Which is pretty remarkable when you think about it.
00:53:02David Coulthard was the one that was doing it on a very empty car.
00:53:05And Schumacher's car is only starting to get down towards being relatively light.
00:53:09Unless he is coming in on a two-stop strategy as well.
00:53:12But I think the fact that he was allowing David to get away implies to me that he was on a one-stop strategy.
00:53:22There are the Constructors' points, and you see that not at fourth place.
00:53:26Benetton,
00:53:29Jordan and B.A.R.
00:53:35And Ferrari, four ahead of McLaren for most Constructors' wins.
00:53:39Got Wurz in third place. Outstanding piece of work by Alexander Wurz.
00:53:43Jack Villeneuve well up there, and Eddie Irvine.
00:53:46Zonta's up there too. Look at Herbert.
00:53:49The button's still not making much headway in tenth place.
00:53:52But he hasn't been happy on this circuit.
00:53:54First time he hasn't really been happy this year, actually, Mike.
00:53:57And we'll know pretty soon, Derek, who the two stoppers are last year.
00:54:01Everyone who made two stops had been in the pits by lap 25.
00:54:05The one-stoppers all came in between laps 27 and 30.
00:54:12So, uh, Jaguar setting up for Eddie Irvine.
00:54:21And the two-stop strategy.
00:54:23And the two-stop strategy.
00:54:25And the two-stop strategy.
00:54:27And the two-stop strategy.
00:54:32These cars look so slow. It's really disappointing.
00:54:35It's such a long lens.
00:54:37Look at it. As the cars come in this corner, it looks so slow.
00:54:39I know it is a slowish corner, but they just seem to come into view.
00:54:42They're doing 185 miles an hour coming towards that lens.
00:54:47I want to say this.
00:54:49This is the most beautifully photographed Grand Prix of the season.
00:54:54And here's Eddie.
00:54:57Eddie Irvine.
00:55:07Very good stop by Jaguar.
00:55:09Not a good time to run across the track with your camera.
00:55:16Bobby Rahal taking over the Jaguar team next year.
00:55:20He is not here this weekend.
00:55:23He was in Japan.
00:55:25The announcement was made at Indianapolis.
00:55:34Oh, trouble for Jenson Button.
00:55:36His last drive for Frank Williams, at least for a couple of seasons.
00:55:41Sorry, but it just shows just how much potential that Benetton does in fact have.
00:55:46Seeing the way Alexander Wurz is running out there today.
00:55:48And remember that next year they'll have more of a Renault engine than they had this year.
00:55:53And of course they've got some pretty good designers moved in to help them with designing a new car.
00:55:58And Jenson will get some seasoning at Benetton for two years.
00:56:03In fact, Mike Gascoigne, who's been released, he was the designer at Jordan.
00:56:07And he's been noticed that since he's left Jordan, he's been on sort of a gardening leave for the last three or four months.
00:56:13The Jordan hasn't gone as well, but he's been released by Eddie Jordan to go to help Benetton for next year.
00:56:19So he's been released early so he can get in there and help design the new car.
00:56:23Yes, they placed him, here's Wurz's pit stop.
00:56:26Yeah, they placed him on gardening leave, as you say.
00:56:29So that anything, if he'd been working on the 2001 Jordan, anything that they developed, he could of course take over with him.
00:56:37And he wouldn't want that to happen.
00:56:39Well, right now he wouldn't be very interested in it because they're going slower than they were before.
00:56:42What a great stop! 6.4 seconds for Wurz.
00:56:45Just what they needed.
00:56:47It'd be great to see them finish on a high note, I have to say.
00:56:50It's an outstanding race by this team.
00:56:53Yeah, Wurz has only two points for the season.
00:56:56A fifth at Italy.
00:56:58And his teammate Fisichello right now has 18 points on the year.
00:57:03Schumacher still luring the fastest lap of the race so far.
00:57:07Supervida worked by him.
00:57:12And they got back to David. 26 seconds in round numbers.
00:57:17Yes, he's about one second inside last year's lap record.
00:57:20But let's not forget that Bridgestone have come up with his new special soft tyre.
00:57:25It's part of the development programme so that when we start next year,
00:57:28the teams that are running on Bridgestone will have a great advantage against the Michelin shot cars.
00:57:33We also hear, although some people at Bridgestone deny it, that they may well quit at the end of 2002.
00:57:39Because of course some of this action, the cost of this action, because they're part of the Firestone group.
00:57:44And of course they need some of the money to help support that awful action they're having with these tyres.
00:57:51We've got to prop up some of those Ford Explorers.
00:57:54So that's quite a problem.
00:57:59But hopefully that won't impact their Formula 1 programme.
00:58:03Now Mika Häkkinen is now at 11th place.
00:58:06He made that 10 second penalty stop.
00:58:09But of course no work can be done on the car during that stop.
00:58:13It looks as if Mika is on a one-stop strategy.
00:58:16Anyway, they put David on a two-stop.
00:58:18Mika on a one-stop for this race.
00:58:20He's going to...
00:58:22Clarence quickly going by Wurz there.
00:58:26Sorry, that look.
00:58:27Oh, was it Visi Keller?
00:58:28I thought Wurz had just come out of the pits.
00:58:30I apologise for that one.
00:58:43Mika Häkkinen now 10th after the pass on Visi Keller.
00:58:50Lacks four seconds to Eddie Irvine.
00:58:59BAR setting up for Villeneuve.
00:59:02Villeneuve.
00:59:08Remember, they lack just two points to Benetton
00:59:11in the constructor standings.
00:59:15Well, Wurz did so well here last year, Derek,
00:59:17and with fourth in the standings at stake,
00:59:20I guess it's really no surprise that he would get
00:59:23the premier equipment on the team.
00:59:26Well, maybe this is a surprise.
00:59:27No, I don't...
00:59:28Visi's the lead driver.
00:59:29Visi's the lead driver.
00:59:30I don't...
00:59:31I don't think it is a surprise.
00:59:32I think it's just the fact that Visi is out of favour
00:59:35at Benetton, and he's already been told
00:59:37that at the end of next year, 2001,
00:59:39his services will no longer be required
00:59:42because they'll have Button,
00:59:43and they may well try and get Ralf Schumacher
00:59:45to go and join them.
00:59:46So imagine the confidence you have as a driver
00:59:48knowing that's in the background.
00:59:52Jack Villeneuve came into the pits 19 seconds off the lead.
00:59:57But with an eight-second gap on David Coulthard,
01:00:00that, of course, evaporates as he comes in the pit lane.
01:00:10Look at that.
01:00:11What a super stop.
01:00:127.2 seconds.
01:00:13All those 22 people just working like one person
01:00:17as they get that car out on the track.
01:00:19Always amazes me, actually,
01:00:20that not more people get run over or get hit
01:00:22by flying wheels and pieces of jack and hammers.
01:00:26He comes out behind Wirtz in 8th place now
01:00:30after his first cycle of good stops.
01:00:35We've not seen Mika Hakkinen nor the Ferraris
01:00:38in the pit lane as yet.
01:00:40Coming up on 23 laps in the Grand Prix of Malaysia,
01:00:43you're watching Formula One on Fox Sportsnet.
01:00:48Michael Schumacher is in the pits at lap 24,
01:00:51a little early for a one-stop strategy.
01:00:54Wonder what Ross Brawn's got up his sleeve.
01:00:577-second stop is a good one.
01:00:59Doesn't it look slow as they go down there at 50 miles an hour?
01:01:03Agonizingly.
01:01:04Now, where is David Coulthard?
01:01:05Is he gonna come into view?
01:01:06Cos he can't be that far behind Michael
01:01:08as he comes out of the pits.
01:01:10Is that David in that second car in your picture now?
01:01:14Looks like a McLaren to me.
01:01:19There's David.
01:01:21Trying to get by Trulli.
01:01:23So, of course, it will be a...
01:01:25The Ferrari will have to come in again for a splash and dash.
01:01:28But, of course, we saw this in the last race
01:01:31where I believe McLaren didn't out-fumble Ferrari at all.
01:01:35Out-fumbled themselves by bringing Hakkinen in early
01:01:38for his stop, and I think that cost them dearly.
01:01:41And they're doing the same thing again now.
01:01:44They called in David early,
01:01:46and really, he could have run more laps.
01:01:49And then they put him back out on the track
01:01:52in a position where he had to deal with Jarno Trulli.
01:01:58He's a lap down and change.
01:02:09So, with seven-second stops, Derek...
01:02:12Gosh, it's an awful short stop to try to get a distance here.
01:02:15Last year, again, the team's number one.
01:02:18The teams that made one stop stopped...
01:02:20The earliest of those stopped at lap 27.
01:02:22We're not even there yet. And here's Rubens.
01:02:24No, exactly. We're not there yet as Rubens comes in.
01:02:27But it makes you wonder.
01:02:29But I just don't think they could have got enough fuel in
01:02:32in seven seconds to see Schumacher 2 to the end of the race.
01:02:38So, Rubens at lap 25.
01:02:42Seven seconds again.
01:02:44Michael Schumacher going by the pits,
01:02:47as Rubens comes out.
01:02:51Look how slow it looks.
01:02:53You can't see the cars going by outside.
01:02:55He'd be so frustrated.
01:02:57Now he can let it all go.
01:02:59But he's third behind Coulthard and Michael Schumacher.
01:03:04And guess who's up to fourth? Johnny Herbert.
01:03:07Hasn't made a pit stop yet.
01:03:09Josper Stoppen up to fifth.
01:03:11Likewise has not stopped.
01:03:13But kind of nice to see Johnny up on the leaderboard.
01:03:16It's interesting to say that Mika Häkkinen
01:03:18has not really done much about Villnövol Wurz,
01:03:20who he was behind after his pit stop,
01:03:23or after his enforced stop.
01:03:25And when they came out in front of him,
01:03:27he's done nothing about them.
01:03:32No, Häkkinen back in eighth.
01:03:34Schumacher the leader.
01:03:43Coulthard, Barrichello, Herbert,
01:03:45Stoppen and Wurz.
01:03:52There's Häkkinen in eighth.
01:03:56Watching Michael Schumacher goes round.
01:03:58He's going to, in this off time he'll get now,
01:04:00for the next few weeks, he's actually going to
01:04:02go back to hospital in Europe and have those plates
01:04:04out of his leg, you know, that were put in
01:04:06after his horrific crash at Silverstone
01:04:08at the British Grand Prix in 1999.
01:04:11But my goodness, they were good plates.
01:04:13Must have been very lightweight metal.
01:04:15Let's ride with Rubens Barrichello.
01:04:24185 miles an hour, down a second gear
01:04:26for the corner, leading onto the pit straight.
01:04:38185 miles again.
01:04:41Right down a second gear.
01:04:4450 miles an hour.
01:04:46Boy, that's music.
01:04:48Wonderful sound, isn't it?
01:04:50Nothing like a V10 at 17,500 revs.
01:04:52Remember that Ferrari are actually using
01:04:54their C engine, their 49C.
01:04:56This is the engine they've actually
01:04:58been using for qualifying
01:05:00from the middle of the season onwards.
01:05:02They've actually decided to run the engine
01:05:04in both their cars for the whole race today.
01:05:11Have a look at the recap of this season.
01:05:13Starting with Austria, Schumacher the winner
01:05:15after Hakkinen won pole.
01:05:17Setting up the season-long battle.
01:05:23San Marino, same result.
01:05:25Hakkinen on pole, Schumacher the winner.
01:05:27Took the first three races.
01:05:29David Coulthard broke through at Great Britain.
01:05:33Hakkinen, the winner in Spain.
01:05:35Grand Prix of Europe.
01:05:37To Schumacher in the rain.
01:05:41Coulthard in Monaco.
01:05:43Ooh, a lot of dust up there
01:05:45from Mika's car.
01:05:47Schumacher coming back
01:05:49and winning in the rain in Canada
01:05:51after taking pole.
01:05:53Coulthard, the winner in France.
01:05:58Mika in Austria.
01:06:00Another look there is
01:06:02Hakkinen off road a bit.
01:06:04And then Rubens
01:06:06in Germany.
01:06:10Mika scored again in Hungary
01:06:14and in Belgium.
01:06:17Michael came back
01:06:19to win in Italy for Ferrari.
01:06:22And in the inaugural Indianapolis
01:06:24United States.
01:06:26And in the inaugural Indianapolis
01:06:28United States Grand Prix.
01:06:30And Japan
01:06:32to put the capper on the season.
01:06:34But just look at this dice, Mike.
01:06:36You've got Mika Hakkinen about to take
01:06:38Jack Villeneuve. He's got, both of them
01:06:40got by Alexander Wurz.
01:06:42And now he's attacking Jack Villeneuve.
01:06:44That won't be easy for Mika Hakkinen.
01:06:46Pulling up into sixth place.
01:06:48Jack Villeneuve will be giving his all
01:06:50and I don't think he'll be worried too much
01:06:52about blue flags as Jack is one of the best.
01:06:55Focus and keep ahead of that guy behind you.
01:06:57And right now, Jack is
01:06:59in position
01:07:01to put BAR into a tie
01:07:03for the season with Benetton
01:07:05for fourth in the standings.
01:07:07And we dwell on this, folks, because it's vitally
01:07:09important to these teams.
01:07:11The purse structure of Formula One
01:07:13is not a matter of public knowledge.
01:07:15But it is known
01:07:17that the teams are rewarded
01:07:19in purse and in travel money.
01:07:21Even in square footage in the paddock
01:07:23and their positions along the pit lane
01:07:25as to where they fall
01:07:27in the Constructors' Championship.
01:07:31Matsukane makes a stop.
01:07:35And Johnny Herbert
01:07:37running in fourth place, due in soon.
01:07:41And Williams setting up
01:07:43for Ralph Schumacher. So it is vitally
01:07:45important to these teams
01:07:47as far as where they end up in this Constructors'
01:07:49Championship. And here's Villeneuve
01:07:51and there's the blue car of Wurz,
01:07:53the Benetton, and they will
01:07:55slug it out for fourth in this Championship.
01:07:59As they sing, uh, Mick Haffen
01:08:01and his wife, Anne, here, there, looking
01:08:03decidedly pregnant. One, uh,
01:08:05well, she must be very glad that the
01:08:07season's over and she can relax during the burst
01:08:09of her child. Otherwise, it could become a little bit
01:08:11earlier than normal.
01:08:17Johnny Herbert in the pits.
01:08:19Mika gonna draft down the back of Villeneuve there.
01:08:21You can see the three of them coming into your shot
01:08:23in the middle. And that's Verstappen just ahead
01:08:25of them, who is the fifth place car.
01:08:28You just saw the, uh, arrows go out of screen.
01:08:30Or out of camera view, that is.
01:08:44I'm glad they've got air conditioning pumped into
01:08:46those helmets. They certainly need it.
01:08:49Johnny Herbert coming in for probably the last
01:08:51pit stop he'll ever have in Formula 1.
01:08:53Certainly, uh, for fuel.
01:08:57On stop, 19 and a half seconds.
01:09:03Ralf Schumacher's in there.
01:09:06And Marc Genet is further back.
01:09:08And Arrows would be setting up for Verstappen,
01:09:10who's running a very fine fourth place.
01:09:12What's that?
01:09:16The mechanics there were doing something
01:09:18towards the hydraulics. They had this before,
01:09:20I think, in the United States Grand Prix.
01:09:22And they're pumping some more pressure in.
01:09:28Ralf getting back on track there behind Genet.
01:09:33There's Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard,
01:09:36and Rubens Barrichello.
01:09:42And this should open up quite a gap
01:09:44between them in fourth place.
01:09:46With both Verstappen and Herbert
01:09:48making pit stops.
01:09:52That was Matsukane and Jarno Trulli.
01:09:54As we roll on in Malaysia,
01:09:56you're watching Formula 1
01:09:58on Fox Sportsnet.
01:10:02Michael Schumacher leads the Malaysian Grand Prix
01:10:04from David Coulthard.
01:10:07This is Mika Hakkinen,
01:10:09who has now climbed to fourth place.
01:10:12But has yet to make
01:10:14a pit stop
01:10:16for fuel and tyres.
01:10:20So if that was the case, he'd have been
01:10:22well away in the race, wouldn't he?
01:10:24That's why he dropped back at the start,
01:10:26because he had so much fuel in,
01:10:28and he just couldn't stay with them.
01:10:30So they did the same as the team
01:10:32said last year. One on a light tank
01:10:34and one on a full tank.
01:10:36And kind of surprisingly,
01:10:38Ferrari did not.
01:10:40Not to be seen, but with Schumacher stopping
01:10:42at lap 24 and Barrichello at 25,
01:10:44it seems that it would be very difficult
01:10:46to go the distance from there without a stop.
01:10:48Well, that's right, but don't forget
01:10:50they were in a position that they could come in
01:10:52to have the stop and go out and still be in the lead.
01:10:54So why not come in, check that the tyres
01:10:56aren't wearing too fast, because remember
01:10:58these tyres would not have done race distance
01:11:00at this circuit, or at any other race condition.
01:11:02They've done a lot of testing
01:11:04all over the place with this tyre.
01:11:06So maybe it may have been a safety factor
01:11:08because they only put 7 seconds of fuel in.
01:11:10And we did have
01:11:12a lap or two behind the safety group.
01:11:14Yes, exactly.
01:11:16And that uses less fuel.
01:11:18Another fastest lap for Mika Hakkinen.
01:11:20It shows the tyres are standing up remarkably well.
01:11:22Everybody's very impressed with these tyres.
01:11:24A little activity
01:11:26in the McLaren garage.
01:11:28So it may be time
01:11:30for Mika to make his stop.
01:11:32David Coulthard is in at lap 17.
01:11:34McLaren do seem to
01:11:36have the unfortunate position
01:11:38in selecting to do some rather
01:11:40crafty team tactics when they're driving
01:11:42against penalised that can't benefit from it.
01:11:44Having had, obviously, 25 seconds
01:11:46in the pits with his stop of 10
01:11:48and then getting in and out.
01:11:54By rights, David Coulthard
01:11:56would possibly be going in
01:11:58in the not-too-distant future
01:12:00for his second stop, unless
01:12:02they were doing the same thing with him, but I'm pretty sure
01:12:04he was on a very light load at the beginning
01:12:06the way he ran away.
01:12:08He ran only 17 laps
01:12:10and his fuel stop was under 7 seconds.
01:12:14And McLaren
01:12:16is setting up now.
01:12:26So we should see Mika in a lap.
01:12:28Then it just depends
01:12:30how soon Michael Schumacher
01:12:32and David Coulthard go in
01:12:34and that would tell an amazing tale
01:12:36as to how quick their stops are.
01:12:38Mika can roll in. How quick can they make it?
01:12:4830 seconds.
01:12:50It's quite a long stop, actually.
01:12:54There's the Benetton in right behind him.
01:12:58And that should be Wirtz's second stop.
01:13:02So Wirtz goes 19 laps
01:13:04on the first, if you will,
01:13:0617 on the second lap.
01:13:12It does seem an eternity, doesn't it?
01:13:24Wirtz gets back out
01:13:26in front of his stoppen
01:13:28which would put him at 9th place.
01:13:32So he's got some ground to make up
01:13:34if he's going to put any points on the board
01:13:36for Benetton tonight and preserve
01:13:384th in the Constructors' Championship.
01:13:41John Lacey is in for his second stop.
01:13:4516 laps on the first tank
01:13:47and 20
01:13:49on the second fuel load.
01:13:5620 seconds there.
01:14:04Let's make sure they get all the fuel in.
01:14:10So a second round of pit stops cycling
01:14:12through. Michael Schumacher continues
01:14:14to lead David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello
01:14:16in the Grand Prix of Malaysia
01:14:18on Fox Sportsnet.
01:14:22Welcome back to the Malaysian Grand Prix
01:14:24from the garage of Arrows Supertec.
01:14:26One of the most improved teams of the
01:14:28year 2000. But like many
01:14:30situations it's all changed for
01:14:322001 because for Arrows this is
01:14:34the last race with Supertec engines.
01:14:36Next year they'll be running the new Peugeot
01:14:38based ATM engine. It is already
01:14:40tested in Spain and proved very
01:14:42very promising in the car in the hands of
01:14:44Pedro de la Rosa.
01:14:46Thanks Peter. Ricardo Zonta
01:14:48is in for his final stop.
01:14:54Mika Salo has also
01:14:56been in for Sauber.
01:14:58Mika Salo actually making his
01:15:00last Grand Prix
01:15:02for a couple of, certainly for a full season
01:15:04because he's going to Toyota as test driver
01:15:06for their new program. Probably along
01:15:08with Alan McNish. And they won't appear
01:15:10again till 2002.
01:15:12So here's Coulthard.
01:15:18Well, it's going to be down to the pit stops
01:15:20Will Ferraro.
01:15:22It's going to be down to the pit stops. Will Ferrari
01:15:24make another pit stop?
01:15:26Michael will now have 30 seconds
01:15:28over Coulthard. He can back off. He doesn't
01:15:30have to hurry as much. Can he make
01:15:32his fuel last end of the race if he had
01:15:34sufficient fuel in there in the first place?
01:15:40Coulthard putting on scrub tires
01:15:42both front and rear there.
01:15:44He did that last time Michael. Yeah he did
01:15:46that. I noticed it as he went out last time.
01:15:48Jacques Villeneuve in for his stop as we saw
01:15:50Sontorin just now. What a great
01:15:52day he's having.
01:15:54Extremely well. Jacques Villeneuve
01:15:56in 4th place.
01:15:58And that is, it is
01:16:00a position in which
01:16:02BAR would move up to 4th
01:16:04in the Constructors Championship
01:16:06which would be remarkable considering they scored not
01:16:08a single point all of last year.
01:16:10Will Ferraro is setting up for
01:16:12a pit stop.
01:16:16Now Michael was in at lap 24 and
01:16:18he wins a lap later
01:16:20in the first sequence.
01:16:22As far as Ferrari is concerned, I mean I know Michael's won the
01:16:24World Championship but thank goodness to me
01:16:26you always want to win races no matter who you are
01:16:28all you want to do is win races.
01:16:30So it's really going to be down to just how quick
01:16:32Ferrari's can do these pit stops.
01:16:34And how quick Michael Schumacher
01:16:36can get these last couple of laps as he comes in.
01:16:43And this may be for just a splash.
01:16:48Well he said he was going to drive
01:16:50for fun this weekend. I'm sure he's having fun.
01:16:52He's got David Coulthard to make him an honest man.
01:16:54And Michael Schumacher
01:16:56does always revel in racing
01:16:58his beautiful prancing horse
01:17:00Ferrari. It is absolutely a
01:17:02wonderful thing to drive for any driver to be part
01:17:04of the Ferrari team. But then to actually win the
01:17:06World Championship as well. Outrageous
01:17:08after all the time and the effort they've all put in.
01:17:10Is he still ahead of Coulthard? At the moment
01:17:12he is.
01:17:14And uh
01:17:16you saw Marc Genet's
01:17:18minority at the top of the pit straight.
01:17:20His season ending.
01:17:22This is Barry Keller of course who's
01:17:24now in the lead.
01:17:28I wonder how he's feeling
01:17:30with a head cold like that in these conditions
01:17:32as I said earlier. It is awful.
01:17:34Mind you it's a good way to sweat it all out
01:17:36but it does make you feel awful in the head.
01:17:40The concentration just isn't there.
01:17:42Your judgement isn't quite what it should be.
01:17:46Now he'll have to make another stop.
01:17:50But the question Derek is
01:17:52does Michael owe Rubens a win?
01:17:55Not at this stage I don't think.
01:17:57I don't think it does. I think if it mattered
01:17:59him beating David Coulthard
01:18:01and I think David does not have to finish
01:18:03for Rubens to finish ahead of him.
01:18:05So therefore if David was to fall out
01:18:07now I believe Michael would be obliged
01:18:09to let Barry Keller
01:18:12go through less rye with Rubens Barry Keller.
01:18:21185 miles an hour.
01:18:23Second gear corner.
01:18:26That good traction out of there.
01:18:28Works his way down past the pits.
01:18:30A lot of work to be done in those few yards
01:18:32while you're braking, getting down those gears
01:18:34and slowing the car down in time.
01:18:36As we mentioned at the top of the show
01:18:38the only way Barry Keller
01:18:40can finish third in the Drivers Championship
01:18:42is if he wins the race
01:18:44and Coulthard scores no points.
01:18:46As we mentioned at the top of the show
01:18:48the only way Barry Keller
01:18:50can finish third in the Drivers Championship
01:18:52is if he wins the race
01:18:54and Coulthard scores no points.
01:19:00Right now it doesn't seem that's going to happen.
01:19:10Jarno Trulli who's had a
01:19:12difficult day dancing around
01:19:1415th position all day
01:19:16after two very early pit stops
01:19:18is in for his final scheduled stop
01:19:20at Eddie Irvine.
01:19:22The Jaguar is in as well.
01:19:40Some 13 laps to go.
01:19:4213 laps to go. Michael Schumacher
01:19:44with only 1.7
01:19:46over David Coulthard. Remember it seems
01:19:48that Rubens Barry Keller should have to go
01:19:50in again for another pit stop.
01:19:52The Ferrari are setting up for him so he'll be in shortly.
01:20:00It's Johnny Herbert
01:20:02leading this group.
01:20:08There's Rubens in the pit lane.
01:20:12Oh!
01:20:28Oh!
01:20:30Couldn't get it going.
01:20:34They were done in seven seconds.
01:20:36Rubens spent another
01:20:38three getting the car into gear
01:20:40and getting off the line.
01:20:42Tossed away three seconds there.
01:20:44But he's got a big buffer
01:20:46between him and Irvine.
01:21:00So Schumacher,
01:21:02Coulthard, Barry Keller,
01:21:04Irvine, Hakanen
01:21:06and Villeneuve
01:21:08Then out of the points
01:21:10Wurz, Verstappen,
01:21:12Zonta, Salo,
01:21:14Herbert,
01:21:16Fisichella,
01:21:18Ralf Schumacher, Alessi,
01:21:20Trulli and Mazzucani.
01:21:38Derek, I'm really surprised
01:21:40to see at the inside
01:21:42of many of these corners
01:21:44they've got apex cones
01:21:46much like you'd have
01:21:48at a Porsche Club driving school.
01:21:50Well, I guess in case some of the drivers
01:21:52get lost and they just say,
01:21:54well, I bumped it over that way.
01:21:56I think they're pretty permanent cones
01:21:58unless they're timing cones
01:22:00something to do with their timing sectors, Mike.
01:22:02It could be to do with that.
01:22:04Well, it's still running very well there
01:22:06in seventh place
01:22:08as is Verstappen, of course.
01:22:13So Ferrari
01:22:15with an opportunity to put big points
01:22:17on the board and secure their second straight
01:22:19Constructors' Championship
01:22:21will be right back.
01:22:23We'll come down to this in the Grand Prix of Malaysia
01:22:25Michael Schumacher leading David Coulthard
01:22:27to the finish line.
01:22:29He's got a big gap
01:22:31between him and Verstappen
01:22:33David Coulthard now by less than
01:22:35one second
01:22:3910 laps left to run
01:22:41in the 2000 Formula 1 season
01:22:47I tell you what, if David Coulthard
01:22:49could win this race and overtake Michael Schumacher
01:22:51what a way for him to finish the year
01:22:53when he did so brilliantly mid-season
01:22:55when he was actually contesting
01:22:57the lead of the World Championship
01:22:59with Michael Schumacher
01:23:01and suddenly Mika got it all together
01:23:03came back and David's really had
01:23:05second place running, you know, second position
01:23:07in the team for some time
01:23:09but he's come back this weekend
01:23:11in fact, can you believe it
01:23:13in the Grand Prix
01:23:15in the United States Grand Prix
01:23:17David, we wonder why he was off the pace
01:23:19they in fact fitted the incorrect rear tyres
01:23:21they put the left on the right and the right on the left
01:23:23when he came in for a pit stop
01:23:25and that cost him quite a bit of time
01:23:27so that was due to some of
01:23:29consistency was created by that
01:23:31here's Agustin Mazzucani
01:23:33for Minardi
01:23:35his plans for next year are
01:23:37somewhat in doubt
01:23:39in fact, Minardi's future
01:23:41with the withdrawal of their major sponsor
01:23:43Telefonica
01:23:45from Formula 1
01:23:47Minardi's future entirely
01:23:49may be in doubt
01:23:51oh no, Riccardo Zonta
01:23:53his day is over
01:23:55that's the end of that Honda engine
01:23:57this was obviously the Honda engine they brought in
01:23:59they brought an engine called a Suzuka
01:24:01special Honda engine they brought in
01:24:03a little bit more power
01:24:05and that looks like it's the end of that one
01:24:13well, what a fine explosion that was
01:24:15good place to go actually, Riccardo
01:24:17I think if he tried to turn in that corner
01:24:19he would have gone flying off the road
01:24:21can you imagine looking in your mirrors
01:24:23and just seeing that lot behind you
01:24:25I'm trying to think of an alliteration
01:24:27to go from Suzuka special
01:24:29to Malaysian
01:24:31what starts with M
01:24:33for blows up
01:24:35hand grenade artist
01:24:37that didn't start with M, but that's alright
01:24:39these two are really
01:24:41having one heck of a race
01:24:43it's difficult to get excited because the
01:24:45world championship has been decided
01:24:47but if this was Michael Schumacher being
01:24:49chased by David Coulter
01:24:51for the world championship, we would have been getting
01:24:53really excited about it, but surely in the cockpit
01:24:55there's nothing calm about it at all
01:24:57and if somehow David
01:24:59can prevail
01:25:01that would give him pretty good bragging rights
01:25:03until next March in Australia
01:25:05Michael and he were getting on extremely well
01:25:07mid-season, but now they seem to have had some bitter
01:25:09words said about some of Michael's driving
01:25:11tactics, which in a way I have to agree
01:25:13they were a little bit strong, some of his moves
01:25:15but Michael's been
01:25:17complaining that neither Villeneuve or
01:25:19David Coulter, who both have been
01:25:21critics of his, have actually said anything
01:25:23to his face, all they've ever talked to is
01:25:25in the press, which seems a bit
01:25:27naughty really
01:25:31Coulter gets ever closer
01:25:33but again the problem that we've spoken
01:25:35of these last three seasons on Fox Sports
01:25:37Net, that when one car gets close
01:25:39to another, there's just not
01:25:41enough clean air flowing over
01:25:43the second car's wings
01:25:45to provide enough downforce to give that car
01:25:47enough grip to be able
01:25:49to make the pass. Well they have got these
01:25:51four very slow corners here where the wing
01:25:53probably doesn't make much difference
01:25:55but Michael always seems to ease away a little bit
01:25:57coming up into this turn, although at this point
01:25:59it's down to less than half a second
01:26:05That's as close as you can get in this sport without being
01:26:07side by side
01:26:14Michael's led 26 of the 48 laps
01:26:16six lead changes
01:26:19and a good bit of on course passing
01:26:22Mika Hakkinen has
01:26:24fastest lap
01:26:26and 14 of the 22 starters
01:26:28running
01:26:3212 seconds back to Rubens
01:26:34from this battle
01:26:44Wouldn't David Coulter just
01:26:46love to win this race
01:26:49It's certainly not over yet
01:26:51They're very very close, some of these tail markers
01:26:53these back markers, these tail enders
01:26:55could play a very very important role
01:26:57in unsettling these two as they come up to go by them
01:27:01And you can bet your life some of the team managers
01:27:03have been slipping down like Ross Braun's been
01:27:05down and Ron Dennis to the other team saying
01:27:07Hey guys, let your fellows move over
01:27:09hope they can see them coming
01:27:15That's Fizzy Keller in front of Michael Schumacher
01:27:17Somewhere in front mind you, seven laps to go
01:27:21Johnny Herbert just in front of Giancarlo
01:27:25That is a dizzying shot, oh my goodness
01:27:33Oh, big trouble
01:27:35One car sliding
01:27:37hard into the barrier
01:27:39The wheel bouncing across the dirt as they went in there
01:27:43And it's Johnny, Johnny Herbert, what a way for him
01:27:45to finish his Formula One career
01:27:47in the fence
01:27:49He was running so well
01:27:51Back in tenth place, but he's alright
01:27:53getting out of the car
01:27:55He lost the right rear and became a passenger
01:27:58Here's a look
01:28:02Oh dear oh dear, was he a lucky boy
01:28:04didn't hit that fence earlier
01:28:06The wheel just totally took off the car
01:28:08There's a little bit of work to be done there
01:28:10in that Jaguar team to straight some of those things up
01:28:12Bobby Rahal's got to contend with that
01:28:14against the team next year, for next year
01:28:18Derek, it's hard to tell, but
01:28:20I'm not sure if that tyre deflated
01:28:22or if something, if just the rear suspension
01:28:24broke
01:28:26and then sent the wheel and tyre
01:28:28He was lifting up, he certainly hurt his feet
01:28:30Remember his feet were so badly damaged at Brands Hatch
01:28:32years ago
01:28:34terribly damaged, I mean smashed to smithereens
01:28:36and he came back
01:28:38Let's just pray and hope there's nothing wrong with those feet now
01:28:40And the car
01:28:42took a very heavy side-on impact
01:28:44into that wall
01:28:46So we'll hope Johnny's alright
01:28:48Let's hope so
01:28:50Look at these two, so close together
01:28:52Still haven't caught up Fizzy Keller
01:28:54But of course there'll be yellow
01:28:56flags out waving at that point
01:28:58But look at David, is he going to slip by and have a go now
01:29:00No, he doesn't
01:29:02Here's a look
01:29:10So for the lead
01:29:12in the final event
01:29:14of 2000
01:29:16David Coulthard chasing
01:29:18Michael Schumacher past the site
01:29:20of Johnny Herbert's accident
01:29:22Six laps to go
01:29:24We'll be right back
01:29:26Final race of the season
01:29:28and a great final battle
01:29:30to end the season with
01:29:3213 seconds up
01:29:34on Rubens Barrichello
01:29:36who is 16 ahead of Mika Hakkinen
01:29:38The two leaders
01:29:40come into view
01:29:42Schumacher and Coulthard
01:29:44less than a second apart
01:29:46The car behind them, Giancarlo Fizzichella
01:29:48they cleared without incident
01:29:50and without gain or loss to either driver
01:29:56Four laps to go
01:29:58and they're about six tenths between them
01:30:00as they go over the line
01:30:02Or about to go over the line
01:30:04Amazing
01:30:06It looks like a motorized caravan
01:30:08and a trailer on the back of it
01:30:10Just nose to tail the whole way
01:30:12since they came out from that last fuel stop
01:30:14Mika Salo ahead
01:30:16may be a factor
01:30:18in these waning laps
01:30:20And we report
01:30:22Johnny Herbert does have a leg injury
01:30:24as a result of that crash
01:30:26We're not sure how serious
01:30:28Watch Herbert's right rear wheel
01:30:30and suspension
01:30:32on the replay
01:30:36The whole front of that car is airborne
01:30:38Absolutely amazing
01:30:40Then look at the back of it
01:30:42as he goes across the dirt
01:30:44He had no braking for that corner at all
01:30:46as he came up there
01:30:48at about 150 miles an hour
01:30:50No braking because the wheel came off
01:30:52And clearly there Derek
01:30:54the wheel and tire bounced away
01:30:56still inflated
01:30:58so something in the suspension
01:31:00had to brake
01:31:02and quite violently
01:31:04Mika Hakkinen
01:31:06trying to catch up
01:31:08Rubens Barrichello but well back
01:31:10A judge
01:31:12to have jumped the start
01:31:14We did see his car
01:31:16move from its grid position
01:31:18but then come to a complete halt
01:31:20before the lights went out
01:31:22Stewards judged that as a foul
01:31:24and he got a 10 second penalty
01:31:26which effectively took him out of this race
01:31:28and McLaren out of a chance
01:31:30to win the Constructors Championship
01:31:32I'd say the other thing too
01:31:34is that Ferrari wouldn't have had it quite as easy
01:31:36as if Mika Hakkinen had been there from the start
01:31:38He's driven an incredible race
01:31:40since his incident
01:31:42and also he's caught up
01:31:44I mean caught up so much time
01:31:46He's only 15 seconds behind Barrichello
01:31:48So if he hadn't lost 30 odd seconds
01:31:50back there at the beginning
01:31:52he would have looked really good right now
01:31:54Now Jacques Villeneuve
01:31:56trying to put two points on the board
01:31:58for BAR
01:32:00Speaking of the rule book, Derek
01:32:02I don't think that'll be enough
01:32:04because if they tie
01:32:06Uh oh, is that Zaccone
01:32:08So both Minardis are out
01:32:10Jeunet having retired earlier
01:32:12alongside the inside wall
01:32:14of the pit straight
01:32:16Caution waving in that area
01:32:18and lots of smoke
01:32:20Well there isn't much wind today
01:32:22so this is why it's like that
01:32:24Just hangs there in the air
01:32:26I was saying
01:32:28If they win Benetton tie at 20 points
01:32:30assuming Virts does not move into the top six
01:32:32and Villeneuve holds on
01:32:34to fifth place
01:32:36then would Fisichella's second place
01:32:38finish in Brazil
01:32:40be the best finish of those two
01:32:42manufacturers and break the tie
01:32:44I don't think it's, I don't remember
01:32:46it ever happening before and I'm sure it has to be something
01:32:48like that Mike. It has to go down to the best position
01:32:52Well if it's best finish
01:32:54that is the tiebreaker because Villeneuve's
01:32:56third win of the season
01:32:58is fourth several times
01:33:00Mikasalo moves over
01:33:02very generously to let those two by
01:33:04having their battle
01:33:08Mikasalo's last Grand Prix
01:33:10until he appears with the Toyota team
01:33:12in 2002
01:33:14a lot of hard work for him
01:33:16I spoke with him some couple of weeks ago
01:33:18and he said you know they're looking for a development program
01:33:20the engine's running very well
01:33:22and it looks like he's getting a pretty good
01:33:24toe off the leaders to keep him out
01:33:26of the clutches of Fisichella
01:33:28though ninth place
01:33:30doesn't have a lot of meaning in
01:33:32in the points
01:33:34stay with us for trophies, champagne
01:33:36the drivers comments
01:33:38and we'll have a look at some of the
01:33:40highlights of the 2000 season
01:33:45Rubens Barrichello actually is doing a tremendous
01:33:47job because we know he doesn't feel
01:33:49well today and he hasn't dropped back
01:33:51from these two very far he's 14 odd
01:33:53seconds behind them but it's not bad
01:33:55at all because he's you know he's feeling
01:33:57not too well and these two are really
01:33:59going hammer and tongs and he hasn't got to worry
01:34:01too much because Mikasalo you know not that
01:34:03far but Mikasalo something like 14
01:34:05seconds behind him. Yeah most importantly
01:34:07he's been able to hold that gap on
01:34:09Hakkinen there you see it
01:34:11now actually it's increased to 15 and a half
01:34:13So Ferrari will end up with a
01:34:15constructors championship by a wide
01:34:17margin
01:34:19should things stay as they are
01:34:21I wonder if Ron Dennis will come along and congratulate
01:34:23them
01:34:25I would hope
01:34:27it would be the sporting thing to do
01:34:29it would be a very nice thing if they did
01:34:33interesting fact that
01:34:35there's an Italian journalist
01:34:37Luca Goldoni said
01:34:39he said the great Enzo after the victory
01:34:41last week when Michael won and won the world
01:34:43championship the great Enzo would have said
01:34:45the steering wheel has changed with the computer age
01:34:47but the spirit is still mine
01:34:49I think it's a lovely saying that Mr. Ferrari
01:34:51would have felt like that. One lap to go
01:34:57Christophen aside for the two leaders
01:34:59and Coulthard has been able to close
01:35:01but has not been able to make a move
01:35:03on Michael
01:35:05And it appears for the first time since 1988
01:35:07only two teams will score victories
01:35:09on the season
01:35:13Ferrari and McLaren but which
01:35:15will it be today?
01:35:17Final lap
01:35:19Schumacher by just about
01:35:21one second
01:35:23and right now Coulthard
01:35:25is in the lead
01:35:27by just about
01:35:29one second
01:35:32and right now Coulthard
01:35:34not in a position
01:35:36to make a move as Schumacher
01:35:38has pulled out a narrow margin
01:35:40well he's given up on it now he knows
01:35:42that Michael isn't about to make a mistake
01:35:44this will be Ferrari's 135th victory
01:35:46the second victory in a row
01:35:48in this Grand Prix in their 10th
01:35:50constructors championship and
01:35:52their first world championship was this year
01:35:54for some 21 years
01:35:56Michael Schumacher in fact has won more
01:35:58Grand Prix's this year than any other
01:36:00Formula 1 driver in the history of Ferrari
01:36:02goodness
01:36:04you didn't know that did you? No I did not
01:36:06Michael Schumacher
01:36:08sorry Michael Schumacher has already won 9
01:36:10Grand Prix's in 2009
01:36:12in 95 and Nigel Mansell won 9
01:36:14in 92
01:36:16but of course they weren't both driving for Ferrari at that point
01:36:20a lot of red flags
01:36:22in this part of the world
01:36:24around in the last corner Michael
01:36:26the last corner of the world championship
01:36:28in 2000
01:36:30Michael Schumacher the world champion
01:36:32Ferrari
01:36:34the constructors champion
01:36:36and Schumacher is a winner again
01:36:38as David Coulthard
01:36:40gets so close and yet so far
01:36:42second again for David
01:36:44and one might well say
01:36:46he drove a stirring race did David
01:36:48Michael Schumacher I reckon had a blast
01:36:50he knew there was
01:36:52all he could do was go for a victory
01:36:54he'd won the world championship two weeks ago
01:36:56Rubens Barrichello did a great job
01:36:58bringing the other Ferrari home
01:37:00actually it was a very strong drive from Rubens Barrichello
01:37:02we haven't seen one of those for a while actually
01:37:04not in that
01:37:06right at the front the way he was
01:37:08Mika Hakkinen comes home fourth
01:37:12he'll be very disappointed because I feel
01:37:14he had a great chance to win that race
01:37:18that's my old mechanic
01:37:20Jack Villeneuve
01:37:22should come across fifth
01:37:24which would tie B.A.R.
01:37:26with Benetton at twenty points
01:37:28and Giancarlo Fisichella's
01:37:30second place finish
01:37:32back in the second race of the season
01:37:34in Brazil
01:37:36would be the tiebreaker
01:37:38for fourth
01:37:40in the constructors points
01:37:42we'll be right back with all the celebrations
01:37:46The Grand Prix of Malaysia on Fox Sports Net
01:37:48is brought to you by Toyota
01:37:50Toyota making it happen
01:37:52every day
01:37:56Well that number three
01:37:58on Michael Schumacher's Ferrari
01:38:00will be replaced by a number one
01:38:02for the year 2001
01:38:04and there you see the tie
01:38:06Benetton and B.A.R. at twenty points apiece
01:38:08with Fisichella's Brazilian finish
01:38:10the tiebreaker
01:38:18We're told the reason for David Coulthard's
01:38:20early pitstop was that
01:38:22his radiators had filled up
01:38:24with grass
01:38:26Interesting
01:38:28Well that's no doubt exactly
01:38:30that was why they were working on the side of that one particular car we saw
01:38:32and we wonder what it was
01:38:34and I've seen them like that before
01:38:36altering the pressure in the car
01:38:38but I think they were probably cleaning grass out of his radiators as well
01:38:40but it did look like the guy was cranking a handle
01:38:42which is something they have to do
01:38:44to do the pressure
01:38:48So Schumacher
01:38:50celebrates his championship
01:38:52with another victory
01:38:56Not bad Derek
01:38:58start the season with three wins in a row
01:39:00and finish it off with four in a row
01:39:02Fantastic, who would have believed it when you thought
01:39:04that mid-season recession when he had so many problems
01:39:06being punted off a couple of times
01:39:08and made errors on his own
01:39:10Right, how many races in a row did he not complete a lap?
01:39:12At least two or was it three?
01:39:18So there are the drivers
01:39:20who were credited
01:39:22with a finish
01:39:24Mazzucati was not running
01:39:26at the flag
01:39:28Michael's going to put the wig on
01:39:30Is he really?
01:39:32One of the mechanics was wearing that
01:39:34tossed it into Park Fermet
01:39:36We should be looking at Schumacher
01:39:38not at Rubens
01:39:40100 degree temperature
01:39:42and there they are putting a wig on
01:39:44I can't believe it
01:39:46And there's another one tossed in for Rubens
01:39:48He's got it on
01:39:50Looks like some German rock star
01:39:52He does
01:39:54Come on fellas
01:39:56It's two weeks to Halloween
01:39:58That's kind of a nice page boy on Rubens there
01:40:00That'll be in a few cameras
01:40:02A few photographs and newspapers
01:40:04from that shot, brilliant stuff
01:40:06Can't wait to see that on the cover of F1 Racing magazine
01:40:08Can you believe that?
01:40:10After all that work and they have the humour to do that
01:40:12I know if you win a Grand Prix it's quite bumping up
01:40:14but I tell you, in that heat
01:40:16it's outrageous
01:40:18Gives a new meaning to the term silly season
01:40:22Petronas is the race sponsor
01:40:24They're the petroleum company
01:40:26Here is Michael Schumacher's
01:40:28final tally
01:40:30108 championship points
01:40:32Mika David Rubens
01:40:34and a big gap to
01:40:36Ralf Schumacher and Fizikello
01:40:38Jacques Villeneuve ends up
01:40:40just one point behind Fizzi
01:40:42Jenson Button a phenomenal rookie season
01:40:44Frenson last year's star
01:40:46This year great disappointment
01:40:48He and Jarno Trulli
01:40:50and the Jordan team
01:40:52Irvine, Zonta, De La Rosa and Wurz
01:40:54I can't believe
01:40:56Everybody's got a red wig
01:40:58Italians don't look the same
01:41:00with red wigs do they?
01:41:02They just look different that is for sure
01:41:04Oh the fans are getting on the track too
01:41:08Well I reckon they deserve it
01:41:10All this heat they deserve to come on the track
01:41:12and have to feel a bit of that atmosphere
01:41:18Italian racing red
01:41:20I haven't seen that on the shelf
01:41:22in the supermarket
01:41:24Somebody must have done a very good deal on that
01:41:26when they sold that lot
01:41:28I wonder if they brought them all
01:41:30Look at Jon Toth
01:41:32He's the team director wearing his
01:41:34Well at least they didn't have red clown noses
01:41:36Yes he's been 8 hard years
01:41:38as Jon Toth being with the team
01:41:40He won the world championship
01:41:42with rally teams in the past
01:41:44Had a tremendous reputation
01:41:46Ferrari took him on board and look what he's done
01:41:48He brought all this together
01:41:50One has to say he's had some severe knocks
01:41:52over the last 8 years but he brought it together
01:41:54Michael Schumacher, Ross Brawn, Rory Burnham
01:41:56Everybody that's come on
01:41:58He's probably talking to Luca Montezemolo
01:42:00on the phone in Italy right there
01:42:02I hope he's talking to his hairdresser
01:42:06Well they certainly know how to celebrate
01:42:11Well they have all got their hats on
01:42:13in their wigs should I say
01:42:15But a lot of great
01:42:17enthusiastic mechanics at that Ferrari factory
01:42:19They don't earn that much money
01:42:21but my goodness they just work with Ferrari
01:42:23It's such an honour to race for that fantastic name
01:42:28Well the constructors Ferrari with 170
01:42:30McLaren with 152
01:42:32Then Williams with a very fine 36
01:42:34Benetton with 20
01:42:36BAR with 20
01:42:38Jordan of course didn't do well today with only 17
01:42:40Arrows with 7
01:42:42Saba with 6
01:42:44Jaguar with 4
01:42:46Cross to Minardi no point
01:42:48So the best finish amongst them
01:42:50will decide who does and doesn't
01:42:52get part of that travel fund
01:42:54for next year
01:42:56Boy do they need the travel fund
01:42:58where they are
01:43:00and losing sponsors all the way
01:43:02So they cannot get the best sponsors
01:43:06The Ferro breeze picked up as the afternoon
01:43:08has gone on
01:43:10Certainly wasn't there at the start of the race
01:43:16Actually looking at cross to Minardi
01:43:18Neither of them had any good finishes
01:43:20A couple of 8th places in there
01:43:22So we'll leave it to the statisticians
01:43:24to figure that one out
01:43:26Minardi did get a place last year
01:43:28I think they got a point
01:43:30Last year
01:43:32Prime Minister of Malaysia
01:43:34Prime Minister of Malaysia is there
01:43:50Quite a festive atmosphere
01:43:52and well deserved for Ferrari
01:43:54and their fans, they've waited a long time
01:43:56for this
01:44:00Well it all goes in cycles
01:44:02We had McLaren, Mercedes for a few years
01:44:04before that we had Williams
01:44:06of course doing incredibly well
01:44:08with the Renault engines
01:44:10then Renault pulled out
01:44:12supplying them only to private teams
01:44:14We saw them coming back again now
01:44:16Renault coming back next year
01:44:18running of course with Benetton
01:44:22Now the drivers are
01:44:24up on the victory podium
01:44:26And what a sight this must be
01:44:36Michael never ceases to be
01:44:38totally overwhelmed
01:44:40by winning and not totally surprised
01:44:42but tremendous
01:46:26Oh
01:46:28Oh
01:46:30Oh
01:46:32Oh
01:46:34Oh
01:46:36Oh
01:46:38Oh
01:46:40Oh
01:46:42Oh
01:46:44Oh
01:46:46Oh
01:46:48Oh
01:46:50Oh
01:46:52Oh
01:46:54Oh
01:46:56Oh
01:46:58Michael Schumacher conducting the Italian
01:47:00National Anthem, a former head of state of Italy
01:47:02rebuked Michael for that and he apologized
01:47:04publicly. I thought it was a rather
01:47:06festive touch but
01:47:08apparently everyone did not agree
01:47:10So the Prime Minister
01:47:12of Malaysia presents
01:47:14Michael Schumacher with his
01:47:16winner's trophy
01:47:18Dr. Mahathir Muhammad
01:47:21Michael waving it
01:47:23Wonderful moment for him winning all these Grand Prix
01:47:25for a Ross Brawn receives the
01:47:27Constructors Award. Ross Brawn
01:47:29who's
01:47:31winning all these Grand Prix for a Ross Brawn
01:47:33receives the Constructors Award
01:47:35Ross Brawn who's just put
01:47:37so much into the technical
01:47:39side and of course to pit strategy side
01:47:41within the Ferrari team
01:47:44David Couldard a great second
01:47:47place. I think that is great for David
01:47:49he needed at the end of the year
01:47:51boost his confidence a lot during the winter
01:47:53for next season
01:47:56And the Prime Minister does a hasty
01:47:58and very political exit
01:48:00from the podium and we apologize for
01:48:02what we understand is video break up
01:48:04coming back to you
01:48:06because here comes the
01:48:08champagne
01:48:10Well Ross Brawn
01:48:12catching it this week. It was John Todd
01:48:14two weeks ago
01:48:16Soaking his wig
01:48:18We'll be back
01:48:20to hear from the podium finishers
01:48:22right after this
01:48:28Michael Schumacher celebrates a season
01:48:30that sees nine victories
01:48:32two seconds, two thirds
01:48:34and a fifth place finish
01:48:36earning him championship points
01:48:38to rest
01:48:40the championship from Mika Hakkinen and
01:48:42Ferrari is the constructors champion
01:48:44once again
01:48:46the drivers posed for pictures
01:48:48in their fright wigs
01:48:50and are now in route to the press
01:48:52conference room where hopefully without
01:48:54those wigs
01:48:56we'll hear their comments
01:48:58I always wonder just how bad it must smell
01:49:00in that press conference and all the drivers
01:49:02are covered in champagne and sweat
01:49:04sweat and champagne
01:49:06that's not a great combination is it
01:49:10Oh what a season
01:49:12for McLaren, for Ferrari, for Williams BMW
01:49:16coming up third
01:49:18after a dismal 1999
01:49:20a reversal of fortune between them
01:49:22and Jordan
01:49:24Benetton recovering
01:49:26BAR scoring their first points
01:49:28and in fact scoring 20 of them
01:49:32Olivier Panis coming in next year
01:49:34Ricardo Zonta
01:49:36leaving Jordan, going to Jordan
01:49:38possibly as test driver
01:49:40will Koya succeed at Williams
01:49:46it'll be very interesting to see just how he goes
01:49:48in fact, because obviously he's going to have a lot of tracks
01:49:50he hasn't been to before, he did used to test
01:49:52for Williams, we know that, and did a full season
01:49:54of being their test driver
01:49:56but two years, or was it just two years
01:49:58he's been in the States, it's quite a long time
01:50:00to be away from it all, and cars have changed
01:50:02and the tyres, yeah driving very different cars
01:50:04with very different levels of grip
01:50:06and there's kind of a Zanardi factor
01:50:08kind of looming over
01:50:10Montoya's shoulder, after Alex
01:50:12won the kart championship and then came over
01:50:14and his firecracker just fizzled
01:50:16in Formula 1
01:50:18so Ferrari
01:50:20moves ahead of Williams for the most
01:50:22constructor championships in Formula 1
01:50:24history
01:50:26as we await the drivers
01:50:28in the briefing room
01:50:30for the final podium finishers
01:50:32press conference of 2000
01:50:38it is a fantastic
01:50:40facility, you have to say that they've built it
01:50:42I mean that pit complex
01:50:44and those grandstands, they're so beautiful
01:50:46nobody's built a track like that
01:50:48anywhere else in the world, that's for sure
01:50:50and it's a long way for everybody to go
01:50:52so they know that they're really never going to get
01:50:54their money back, it purely has to be
01:50:56for the good of the country
01:50:58and for the impression it gives the rest of the world
01:51:04well the Malaysian Grand Prix brought
01:51:06over 31 million dollars
01:51:08into the economy
01:51:10the top three finishing drivers for the last
01:51:12Grand Prix of the 2000 season, the Malaysian
01:51:14Grand Prix, it's Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard
01:51:16and Rubens Barrichello
01:51:18Michael, many may congratulations, the constructors
01:51:20championship, your ninth win in the season, equals
01:51:22the record, it must be because you're worth it
01:51:26thanks to remind me to our
01:51:28L'Oreal advertisers, you see
01:51:30he's doing good
01:51:32um
01:51:34yes
01:51:36we wanted to win this race, we did it
01:51:38a very tough race, a very tight race
01:51:40in DC, really pushed
01:51:42from the first to the last lap
01:51:44so did I, and that meant a flat
01:51:46out race, very tough physically
01:51:48car wise and everything
01:51:50and
01:51:52yeah, we did it, we won the
01:51:54constructor championship after all
01:51:56not by just taking three points
01:51:58by winning and becoming third
01:52:00that's just I think
01:52:02the right result, what the team
01:52:04deserves, honestly, to my view
01:52:06now obviously at the end of the first lap
01:52:08you must have been rather surprised to see both McLarens
01:52:10in front of you, did you know that Mikko had jumped the start
01:52:14no, I mean I can't look in the mirror
01:52:16at this moment and he's just behind me
01:52:18this 8 meters, 10 meters, so for me it's impossible
01:52:20to see the same as
01:52:22when David had the same situation
01:52:24in India, I cannot judge that
01:52:26because you concentrated on the light
01:52:28and on what you're doing
01:52:30and then you start to watch two other guys
01:52:32what they do, I didn't
01:52:34have a very good start, I mean I was
01:52:36suffering not really to get off
01:52:38well enough
01:52:40not off wheelspin, just
01:52:42not got a good
01:52:44going, but anyway
01:52:46I mean we went
01:52:48third after DC outbraked me from the outside
01:52:52and then we just had to watch what the strategy
01:52:54can do for us
01:52:56now you actually set your personal
01:52:58fastest lap at the end of the first stint
01:53:00you never really went fast again in the
01:53:02following two, was it because you were just controlling the race
01:53:04or did the car go off slightly
01:53:06no
01:53:08it might be the tyres, the tyres
01:53:10become better when they get older
01:53:12it could be a factor, and I did more
01:53:14laps on my first set than I did on the other set of
01:53:16tyres, I guess it's that
01:53:18plus in the last stint, I mean
01:53:20I saw the gap, I judged it
01:53:22and obviously you don't go for
01:53:24100% because you
01:53:26don't want to make a mistake and doing 100%
01:53:28drive is easy, so you just go this
01:53:30little bit slower, which
01:53:32means the lap times are a little bit less
01:53:34thanks Michael
01:53:36David, so near yet so far
01:53:38you were pushing all the time and a very
01:53:40very different strategy from your team mate
01:53:42how did McLaren come up with that idea
01:53:44well unfortunately we didn't intend stopping
01:53:46anywhere near as early as
01:53:48lap 18, but when I ran off the circuit
01:53:50coming out of turn 6
01:53:52I filled the left hand side of the car
01:53:54with grass and the temperatures were going up
01:53:56for 5 laps and then it sort of stabilised but
01:53:58the team felt it was better to
01:54:00take the gamble and
01:54:02even though we knew obviously we'd lose
01:54:04time, it was better to lose
01:54:06time and make sure you could
01:54:08guarantee the engine would make it to the end so
01:54:10it's disappointing because then
01:54:12it could have been a bit closer, but
01:54:14that's the way it works out if I should have kept the car on the circuit
01:54:16now at the
01:54:18end of the race on the way in, we saw you having a quick word
01:54:20to Michael, what did you say?
01:54:22Well, to be honest I was
01:54:24just apologising to Michael for the
01:54:26year, you know, we've had some differences
01:54:28and I'm embarrassed that
01:54:30sometimes I was
01:54:32maybe saying things too publicly and not going to
01:54:34talk to him face to face and it was just really to
01:54:36to, we're at the end of the season
01:54:38to apologise for that and to
01:54:40say he's a great champion and
01:54:42I look forward to competing against him next season
01:54:44David, thank you very much
01:54:46Real Madrid's a very strong third place, especially
01:54:48considering you've not been feeling well all weekend, I mean how were
01:54:50the conditions out there today?
01:54:52Well, the conditions were hot and as you said
01:54:54I still have a little bit of flu
01:54:56and I was worried at
01:54:58the beginning of the race because
01:55:00my conditions were not great
01:55:02but the car felt great the whole time and
01:55:04you know, I could keep
01:55:06quite well the pace, I lost
01:55:08time on my second pit stop due to
01:55:10the fact that I couldn't get first gear
01:55:12which was a shame because
01:55:14I was closer to the battle
01:55:16but I'm pleased
01:55:18my season went very well
01:55:20and to finish a strong
01:55:22third position in this race means
01:55:24you know, we're going to start
01:55:26next year in a good position as well
01:55:28Rubens, thank you
01:55:30Michael, after Suzuki you said you hadn't planned a party
01:55:32I believe there's a huge party planned tonight, do you intend
01:55:34to let your hair down?
01:55:36I intend to change my
01:55:38colour, but I don't
01:55:40see the point for taking away the hair
01:55:42I mean, whoever wants to do
01:55:45that, it's fine, but that's not my intention
01:55:47I think you can celebrate
01:55:49in different ways
01:55:51we will
01:55:53celebrate, I think, in a big way tonight
01:55:55the poor guys have first
01:55:57now to pack up everything because everything has to
01:55:59be shipped out tomorrow, it's a bit of a
01:56:01shame after such a race
01:56:03and year that you can't
01:56:05just let off, I mean, these guys have to continue
01:56:07working, but then after they finish
01:56:09hopefully early tonight, we're going to have
