00:00Nightly greetings one and all.
00:06William Theo here, homegrown, and happy to bring you PTV News Now.
00:10And we kick off tonight's stories with today's homecoming honor parade for the Philippine
00:15delegation to the just-concluded Paris Olympics.
00:19Less than 24 hours after they hit home, terra firma last night and being lavished in grand
00:25reception and testimonial dinner by the President and his family at Malacanang Heroes Hall,
00:31the country's athletes who poured their energy, heart, and soul in the Paris Games boarded
00:36one of the five floats in this afternoon's homecoming parade organized by the City of
00:41Manila in cooperation with the MMDA.
00:45The double gold medalist Carlos Yulo front and center, and Neste Petesio and Aira Villegas,
00:51thousands of well-wishers and onlookers came out and took to Dewey Boulevard and to Taft
00:57Avenue to cheer and hail the Paris Olympic performers.
01:00Co-ed high school students rushed to the parade route after school and waved Philippine flags,
01:06jumping for joy, screaming in glee, and at the sight of the athletes perched high on
01:12their float and sprayed on with confetti every now and then.
01:16Yulo, Petesio, Villegas, to include rower Joni Delgacio helped autographed shirts,
01:22notebooks, tablets, ball caps, posters, basketballs, and other memorabilia with their markers and
01:28sharpies for the wistful and pleading fans down below.
01:32The Rizal Coliseum reception in the evening was a fitting and grand welcome by thousands
01:38of screaming fans and adoring Filipinos that capped today's events.
01:43This parade, however, was prefaced earlier with a day with a Congressional Honor Reception
01:48and Citation at the House of Representatives Headquarters, led by House Speaker Martin
01:53Romaldas, who handed out plaques and cash incentives to all the athletes.
01:58It was definitely a good day for sports in the country.
02:04Turkey is a NATO member, but has received a cold shoulder from some of its allies, to
02:10include the United States for its stand behind and with the Palestinians in Gaza.
02:16Now Erdogan is set to receive a visiting Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian leader in the West Bank,
02:22for talks to reassert its influence in the region and with its allies.
02:27Leo A's Dorian Jones reports from Istanbul.
02:32With Israel's war on Hamas still raging, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas will make a
02:38two-day visit to Turkey Wednesday, during which he will address the Turkish Parliament.
02:44But observers say the visit will likely be more about shoring up Turkish President Recep
02:49Tayyip Erdogan's domestic political base, than playing any meaningful role in resolving
02:55the conflict.
02:56It's more conveying a message to their own base, specifically.
03:01Internationally, I don't think there's an audience that really sees Turkey as the vanguard
03:08or Erdogan as the champion of Palestinian rights anymore.
03:14On the contrary, I think that ship has sailed long ago.
03:18Erdogan publicly scolded Abbas, accusing the Palestinian leader of initially refusing his
03:23invitation to visit Turkey.
03:26The Turkish leader claims to be a bridge between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas.
03:32But observers say China's recent hosting of leaders of the Palestinian factions is a sign
03:37Erdogan has been usurped from that role.
03:40This is an issue that Erdogan personally invested a lot of time and energy.
03:47He was hoping to reconcile Palestinian factions, but China stole the spotlight and acted preemptively
03:54in a way.
03:56China had more political clout over the parties.
04:03On Tuesday, Abbas visited Moscow, underlining what analysts say is the growing importance
04:09of other countries in efforts to resolve the conflict.
04:12But Erdogan could be seeking to use the Abbas visit to re-establish his Palestinian influence,
04:19especially after the assassination of his close ally, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, and
04:25his replacement with Yahya Sinwar.
04:28Erdogan himself and AK Party entourage was specifically endorsing Hamas and especially
04:38Haniyeh up to this point.
04:40Now you have Sinwar, they cannot host him, they cannot contact him or have those kind
04:45of relations that they had with Haniyeh.
04:48So they have to settle with Mahmoud Abbas at this point.
04:53Observers warn Abbas may have little interest in looking to Turkey to play a greater role
04:58in resolving the conflict.
05:01Some say Ankara has little to offer, as Erdogan's strong support of Hamas and its fiery rhetoric
05:07against Israel is increasingly isolating Turkey from countries seeking to end the fighting.
05:13It's not only Israel which is blocking Turkey's participation in the process, but also Gulf
05:21countries are allegedly involved and they also don't want Turkey to take part.
05:29Analysts warn that any hopes Abbas' visit will herald Ankara's enhanced role in ending
05:34fighting in the region will likely be disappointed.
05:38Most likely, they say, Erdogan, who is scheduled to hold a joint press conference with Abbas,
05:43will have to settle for his visit, giving his standing a boost among his conservative
05:48base.
