00:00It's one of the most horrendous crimes that the state of New York has ever encountered.
00:29An 8-month-old baby is found inside of a plastic grocery bag behind a house in an Elmira neighborhood.
00:35Although police would be shocked to learn that she has miraculously survived, in this
00:40never-before-seen footage authorities will discover the unimaginable horror that was
00:44forced upon the innocent child, along with the sadistic monster who would commit the
00:49unthinkable.
00:50The summer heat is beginning to creep in on August 8, 2017, when Elmira authorities respond
00:56to the horrifying 911 call.
00:58A baby has been found all alone.
01:29I've got her eyes to open, they were closed.
01:31You did, they were closed?
01:32Yeah, and I've got them open.
01:34Funny, I don't have kids of my own.
01:35Sorry, but it's...
01:36That's good.
01:38You're welcome.
01:40You guys did the right thing.
01:41Thank you, yeah.
01:42You guys saved that kid's life.
01:43Yes, we did.
01:44I'm ashamed that I never had feet before in my life.
01:48A precious baby.
01:49Yeah, absolutely.
01:50Look what we found.
01:52So, when did this all just happen?
01:54Just now, huh?
01:55Just now.
01:56It just happened like 15, 10 minutes ago.
01:58Would you be able to show me exactly where you found the baby?
02:01Yeah.
02:02The woman leads the officer outside, where she discloses a most heartbreaking revelation.
02:07Right over there.
02:08Right here?
02:09Right.
02:10Maybe if I could...
02:11Oh, can you see it?
02:12Yeah.
02:13That's good enough.
02:14Well, you've been advised that.
02:15Right here.
02:16I'm talking about her waist.
02:17You can smell the...
02:18You can smell the...
02:19That's what I...
02:20Yeah.
02:21It's right here.
02:22Right here in this area.
02:23Okay, we just...
02:25She was really nasty.
02:26Pissy.
02:27She had...
02:28Still got stuff on her hair, too.
02:29She's been out here...
02:30It's all right.
02:31At least two days.
02:32Let me talk with the officer.
02:33I'll go back to you.
02:34All right?
02:35I don't want nobody to tell you we stole the child.
02:37No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
02:38You did the right thing.
02:39You went out and took it.
02:40We heard it for two days.
02:41How you heard the baby was for two days in the bag?
02:44I didn't hear the baby at all.
02:45No, I didn't hear it in the bag.
02:46I just heard her cry.
02:47It was around the corner.
02:48See, that baby would be dead by now if it was in the bag for two days.
02:53The ambulance won't find it.
02:54The ambulance won't figure it out.
02:55That's crazy.
02:56Somebody wouldn't do that.
02:57Oh, my God.
02:58That thing scared me, man.
02:59Poison.
03:00I ain't never seen that.
03:01Right in her face, right?
03:02Yeah, yeah.
03:03Her eye.
03:04Her one eye looks like she's in her hole.
03:05Did she hit her thumb or what?
03:06It looked almost like a rash, and the rash swelled up the eye.
03:09When she was working on her, I could see it all down her chest.
03:12So you actually had heard this noise for about two days' time?
03:15Mm-hmm.
03:16Many of the residents believe the crying sounds to be that of a baby inside of someone's home,
03:21while others thought it to be an animal.
03:24However, the horrific truth is that someone had callously abandoned the child outside.
03:29But investigators aren't too far off of the monster's trail,
03:32where every twisted secret will inevitably come to light.
03:36And it's only in the morning you could hear it.
03:38And I didn't think nothing of it because you hear babies cry all the time.
03:41Okay.
03:42Was there something that stuck out about this?
03:44Just the same kind of cry at the same time for two mornings in a row.
03:47Two mornings in a row?
03:48Yesterday morning and then this morning?
03:49No, yesterday morning.
03:50Well, today would be the third day.
03:52It's an utter miracle that the child has survived after being abandoned for three days.
03:56Clearly, she would have suffered a different fate had she not been rescued when she was.
04:01So you were up on the porch?
04:02Yeah, we was right there.
04:03I was with them.
04:04Okay.
04:05Watching.
04:06They like, oh, you see that over there?
04:07I'm like, I'm thinking it's just a bag of garbage.
04:09They said it's moving.
04:10I'm like, it's not moving.
04:11They thought it was a dog.
04:13Open the bag.
04:14I seen that head.
04:15So I ran over there.
04:16A baby was in there?
04:17Yeah.
04:19The baby is quickly rushed to the hospital.
04:21It's a heartbreaking scene to watch as medical staff do everything in their power
04:25to help the little girl who is fighting for her very life.
04:28No fight.
04:29No fight at all.
04:31She's just laying there.
04:34Asleep or I don't know.
04:38They're on there.
04:39It looks like it's swollen shut.
04:41He said he talked to a guy down there that said he was hearing off and on.
04:45Off and on.
04:46She was crying for two days.
04:47So it's not very well for her to have been out there for that long.
04:50I mean, I don't know.
04:51The kids told me, you know, she was covered with bugs.
04:53Yeah.
04:54Feces.
04:55Well, that's what scared me.
04:56Feces and everything else.
04:57Back at the house, officers continue talking to the horrified residents of the neighborhood,
05:02hoping to uncover any bits of information as to who might have committed such an evil crime.
05:07Soon, they're met with a shocking discovery.
05:09He was staying there.
05:11Her name was Harriet.
05:12She just had a baby a few months ago.
05:14I think it was like four or five months ago.
05:17Harriet?
05:18Yeah.
05:19Her name was Harriet.
05:20Do you remember her last name?
05:21Authorities now have somewhat of a lead.
05:23However, there isn't too much to go on yet.
05:25But that will quickly change when someone else makes their way onto the scene.
05:30Can they tell you why?
05:32My daughter told me that they found a little girl in the backyard.
05:37Is she okay?
05:39Yes.
05:43We need to find out who the baby is and who the parents are.
05:49This is Shirley, the owner of the house where the baby was heartlessly abandoned.
05:53She tells investigators that her daughter, Jodi Forrest, currently lives in the home.
05:57However, Shirley also explains that a Daniel Forrest also resided in the house at one point,
06:03although it's unclear if he and Jodi are separated or divorced.
06:06Nonetheless, this will go on to play a large role in tracking down the sadistic culprit.
06:11With the little information they have,
06:13police eventually discover their lead suspect to be 17-year-old Harriet Hoyt.
06:18The teenager is from Sayre, Pennsylvania,
06:20but investigators are now wondering if she may have taken a trip to Elmira, New York
06:24with a most sinister agenda in mind.
06:27Malnourished?
06:28Yeah, she's in there.
06:29Dehydrated?
06:30Toned in a bottle of ethanol right now,
06:32but there's still whipped cream and maggots out of her eyes.
06:35Still?
06:36Still.
06:37That's right.
06:39They did this.
06:40Yeah, that's the truth.
06:42Oh, you guys going to get them?
06:43Yeah.
06:44Everybody feels that way.
06:45This ain't right.
06:46You ride the lightning on this one.
06:48Yeah.
06:49You can't say I'd rather know.
06:51You can put her on the porch, put her in the supermarket,
06:52take her to the police station.
06:54You put her way back there in there.
06:55You wanted that baby, then die.
06:57At the hospital, medical staff continue attending to the child's wounds.
07:01However, there's still an absolute shock due to the incomprehensible situation at hand,
07:06but the suspect can only stay hidden for so long,
07:09and the truth is just moments away.
07:11And was this a plastic garbage bag?
07:14Paper bag?
07:15That's what I was told.
07:16It was a plastic garbage bag.
07:17Obviously, it wasn't clothes.
07:18Obviously.
07:19God, what kind of monster would do this?
07:21During this time, an officer makes a baffling discovery
07:24when he locates Harriet's Facebook account.
07:26On it is a shocking and disturbing post.
07:29That's not her.
07:30Why is that her?
07:31But it's 12.30 a.m.
07:33That's yesterday, just after midnight.
07:36Right.
07:37So she could have just posted on Facebook.
07:39Yeah.
07:41Puts a smile on his face.
07:43Yeah, there you go.
07:45Try it, Sabrina.
07:46In a horrific revelation, authorities learn that Harriet had supposedly posted a picture of her own child
07:52just one day prior.
07:53That child would turn out to be eight-month-old Sabrina Hoyt,
07:56the baby who was seemingly left for dead.
07:59However, what makes this all the more disturbing
08:01is the fact that Harriet uploaded the picture
08:03while Sabrina was inside of a plastic bag,
08:06all alone, nowhere near her mother.
08:08It seems like the teenager may have done this in an attempt to throw off suspicion,
08:12but it only goes to show her cruel and callous nature.
08:15Eventually, authorities were able to track down the 17-year-old mother
08:19who quickly made a horrifying confession.
08:21She told investigators that she'd asked her stepmother
08:24to drive her and Sabrina from Sayre, Pennsylvania, to Elmira, New York
08:28in order to visit Jodi on August 5th, 2017.
08:31She further states that she informed her stepmother
08:34that Jodi had reportedly left the back door open for Harriet and Sabrina to enter the home.
08:38However, this is a bold-faced lie.
08:41Once the teenager and her daughter were at the house,
08:43they sat on the back porch before Harriet made a phone call to her friend, Alexis Shadow.
08:48But the conversation supposedly turned volatile,
08:51in which Harriet became upset.
08:53In her police statement, she confessed,
08:55I was already stressed and depressed prior to this,
08:58and this argument did not help me.
09:00I think I snapped and I didn't want to do anything physically to harm Sabrina because of my anger.
09:04I decided that I needed some time away from Sabrina,
09:07so I decided to walk away from her.
09:09Before I left, I decided that I wanted for Sabrina to be safe,
09:12so I placed her into a garbage bag so she wouldn't get cold or rained on.
09:16I then took the bag with Sabrina in it
09:18and placed it over near some bushes in the backyard area.
09:21I stayed with Jodi throughout the weekend,
09:24Apparently, she left Sabrina between the hours of 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
09:29In addition, Harriet states that she informed people
09:31that Sabrina's father was taking care of the child for a couple of days.
09:35But the heartbreaking truth remains
09:37that Harriet heartlessly abandoned her child.
09:39The 17-year-old mother was taken into custody
09:42and charged with attempted murder in the second degree.
09:44Thankfully, Sabrina would make it out alive of the unthinkable horror.
09:48In December of 2017,
09:50Harriet pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the second degree
09:53and was later sentenced in February 2018 to nine years in prison
09:58in addition to five years of post-release supervision.
10:01If she'd gone to trial,
10:02Harriet could have been facing up to 25 years in prison
10:05had she been found guilty.
