00:00I'm Maggie Beer, and I'm on my way to a lunch appointment, but I've got to say I'm a little

00:09nervous.

00:10Here we go.

00:13I've come to an aged care residence, the kind of place where nearly 200,000 Australians

00:19live, a number that's predicted to increase by over 80% in the next 20 years.

00:29Living in a care home can be a time to flourish, the reward for a life well spent, but in Australia,

00:37aged care is in crisis.

00:41I was horrified to hear the recent Royal Commission findings which revealed that 68% of Australians

00:48in residential aged care are either at risk of malnutrition or are malnourished.

00:55The statistics are dire, and it's totally unacceptable in our society.

01:01And nurses and carers are feeling overworked and undervalued.

01:06It's physically draining, emotionally draining, and mentally draining.

01:11So for the health and well-being of our senior Australians, I want to give aged care the

01:17overhaul it so desperately needs.

01:22Spreading the word about good food and nutrition has been my life's mission.

01:28In a groundbreaking experiment, over the next four months, I'm immersing myself in an aged

01:48We'll give the home a much needed makeover.

01:51This space has potential.

01:53Staff will be upskilled and empowered.

01:56Feeling valued and proud of their work will help them become better carers.
