00:00This is Volvo's new electric van and if it's a Volvo I'm going to say it's going to be pretty
00:05damn good. I think it's definitely worth considering even for a like a large SUV.
00:10This could in fact be a better option. Hello my friends, great to see you. Thank you for watching.
00:15Welcome to the channel and as you guys know I am quite a fan of Volvo the company and in
00:19particular their CEO. He is saying that Volvo is going EV only as fast as they possibly can.
00:25In fact by 2026 it's pretty much the end for gasoline and diesel for Volvo. Volvo are changing
00:33in a lot of ways. In fact Volvo have said no more front-wheel drive. A front-wheel drive is not a
00:38good idea in an EV. It's worth listening to them as well because Volkswagen Group and Hyundai Kia
00:44have also said exactly the same thing. Of course Tesla doesn't have any front-wheel drive EVs
00:49either. So this new Volvo electric van, is it actually any good? Well for one it won't be
00:56front-wheel drive. Now when I was growing up as a kid we had a Toyota Turago. That thing was
01:02front-wheel drive. It had very minuscule amount of power but it would still skid the front wheels.
01:08I remember when I was learning to drive, that's the car I had to learn to drive in. It was a stick
01:12shift, it was a manual, it was a dog to drive. You know having to start that thing on a hill
01:18you would spin those tires and anyway front-wheel drive wasn't the best. Now personally I think if
01:24I had have learned, if I learned to drive this Volvo van or you know large car it would have
01:30been so much easier but at the same time I probably wouldn't have learned a lot of the
01:33skills that I was forced to learn by driving what was a pretty old dog of a car. Anyway
01:40Volvo is introducing its first people mover. It's the electric EM90. Have we seen this car
01:47before it's meant to be released? Well China's government basically requires this information
01:52and it was leaked from them. Anyway the EM90 is officially scheduled, slated for its reveal on the
01:5912th of November but this is what it looks like and we now know how heavy it is, how big it is. It's
02:06not as heavy as I thought it would be. It's a seven seater and it weighs 2760 kilograms.
02:14So yeah it's still you know nearly 6,000 pounds but it's got a big battery pack and it's a really
02:20big vehicle. I think that weight is not too bad. Anyway how big actually is it? Well it is big.
02:27It's 5.2 meters long. That's 5,206 millimeters and it's also quite wide. It's 2024 millimeters
02:37wide so over two meters wide. It's nearly two meters tall, 1860 millimeters tall. Wheelbase
02:44is quite big as well, 3.2 meters or 3,205 millimeters. That's identical to the Geely
02:51owned brand Zika. They have a van called the 009 which looks not bad. In my opinion this
02:58Volvo looks better but anyway Geely are bringing the brand Zika to Europe and I believe the United
03:05States as well. I believe also Australia. So that's good news. You have a couple of choices
03:10here. This also means that it's a similar size to the LDV Mifa. The Mifa 9 is on sale in various
03:16countries inside China. It's on sale plus it actually is on sale here in Australia as well
03:22but it's quite expensive. It's more than a hundred thousand dollars. So the Volvo van that you're
03:27looking at right here, the people mover, it has a single rear motor in the cheaper specification.
03:33I believe there's an all-wheel drive version as well coming. We don't know the details on that yet
03:37but anyway the single rear mounted motor has 200 kilowatts, about 280 horsepower
03:42and that gives it a speed, a total maximum performance speed of 180 kilometers an hour.
03:47We don't know what speed it does 0 to 62 or 0 to 100 kilometers an hour yet. Anyhow, outright
03:53performance is probably not the goal with a vehicle like this. Efficiency I think matters
03:57how much range can you get. Now the sister car here, the Zika 009, I think looks quite
04:08in fact like one of the ugliest cars ever invented in human history and which is surprising considering
04:13Zika's other cars look great. Anyway, it has, well we have some details on it, it has 400
04:19kilowatt of power and over 800 kilometers of range. So it looks as though the Volvo is using
04:25exactly the same motor but we only have specifications for the rear wheel drive
04:29motor. So the all-wheel drive version would have the same thing, right? They'd basically just use
04:33the same exact motor that they've used in the rear, in the front as well, giving it about 570
04:39horsepower and a range of 800 kilometers is amazing. I mean real world range maybe looking
04:46at 600, 650 but either way that's absolutely staggering. So how big are the battery packs
04:51that come in this vehicle? Well, the smaller battery is 116 kilowatt hour pack. The bigger is
04:57a 140 kilowatt hour pack. The thing is, right, the range is staggeringly good for the smaller
05:06battery pack. 116 kilowatt hour pack in a vehicle this size, it's a massive car. 702 kilometers of
05:11range, right? That's the CLTC cycle so you're probably looking at closer to 600 kilometers
05:16real world but the bigger battery, the 140 kilowatt hour pack, that gives it 822 kilometers
05:22of range. So 700 kilometers of range in the real world for a car this size, that's basically
05:27the same as petrol, diesel, gasoline versions of vans. In fact, it's more than some of them.
05:34Amazing. You know why it's so amazing? This is the reason. It uses CATL's new TIRIN battery
05:41which has got a very very high energy density and it's an incredibly impressive battery technology.
05:48So this is the kind of battery you're going to see. I think this is a car that if you're looking at
05:54a people mover, an electric people mover, this is probably the first thing I'd be looking at.
05:59Either the Zika version or the Volvo version. I think the Volvo version will look a lot nicer
06:04but anyway you have a couple of choices here. Now the torque of the all-wheel drive version
06:08is massive as well. It's got 686 newton meters of torque. This means that it is insanely fast.
06:15I mean imagine driving a car this big, zero to 100 kilometers an hour, 4.5 seconds.
06:22You could beat, you could probably beat most Ford Mustangs off the line. Most of them can't do 4.5
06:27seconds, zero to 62 miles an hour. There's zero to 100, 4.5 seconds for a big people mover.
06:33Incredibly the drag coefficient as well is amazing, 0.27 plus the charging speed. Now here's
06:40the other big advantage of this new battery technology. It charges from 10 to 80 percent
06:45in only 28 minutes. Now in terms of the size, it's basically exactly the same size as its Geely
06:53counterpart which is why I'm going to assume, seeing as the cars are both made in the same place,
06:58almost the same, basically the same factory, the same exact size cars, same motors, same battery
07:04packs and that means that it's likely to get the CATL cheering battery as well. Now another nice
07:09feature that these EVs have is it has high performance air suspension with double wishbone
07:15front and multi-link rear suspension which means, I mean you could potentially raise or lower the
07:21vehicle depending on the kind of driving you're doing. So let's say you're just driving on the
07:24freeway, on the highway and you want to get more range, you could potentially lower the car
07:29and get more range in that situation. But then if you had to drive over a driveway or maybe just a
07:33little bit of off-road minor, you know, clearly minor off-road driving, you could also then raise
07:38that air suspension. I think that's cool. Guys, this might be the most impressive Volvo vehicle
07:44we've seen so far. Now the EX30 is excellent. It's a small crossover electric vehicle. Very,
07:49very impressive. But personally, considering the range, the charging speed, the power and the
07:57overall OEC, the CD of this vehicle, I honestly think this is the most impressive electric van
08:04we've seen anywhere in the world so far. I'm really excited to see these made. I'm amazed. I
08:10mean the difference between the old crappy Toyota Turago that I had growing up versus something
08:15like this is just, it's like comparing a supercar to a piece of junk. Anyway,
08:20let me know your thoughts in the comments. Thanks for watching.
