00:00Bedtime for Bear Story by Sandol Stoddard
00:14Illustrated by Lynn Munsinger I can't go to sleep
00:19Said Small Why me?
00:23Asked Big Because the upstairs dark is different from
00:27the dark downstairs and it's not the right kind of dark there at all for bears, said
00:32Small.
00:34And I am a bear.
00:35Oh my, said Big.
00:38Whatever shall we do?
00:40Shall I make a little lair for a very small bear downstairs tonight right next to mine?
00:46That would be fine, said Small.
00:49And it was.
00:51But pretty soon.
00:53I can't go to sleep.
00:56Small said Because I hear a noise.
00:58A very big noise.
01:00And the noise I am hearing is bees and bears didn't like bees one bit.
01:05And I am a bear.
01:07The bees are tucked in, said Big.
01:10They have turned out the light.
01:13The bees are all sound asleep at this time of night.
01:17Why aren't you?
01:19Because it isn't fair, Small said.
01:23Even in my lair I've tried to sing I've tried to hum.
01:27But I need something else and I need a thumb.
01:30But I haven't got a thumb because because bears only have paws.
01:35And I'm a bear.
01:36Hush, said Big.
01:39Paws are delicious with a little yogurt and brown sugar on them.
01:43There.
01:45And that was true.
01:47But pretty soon.
01:48I really am a bear.
01:50But Small, I am.
01:53And bears don't like going to bed at all and they don't fit in beds that are big or beds
01:57that are small.
01:59And they need a drink of water all the time and especially they don't like wearing scratchy
02:04pyjamas.
02:06Heavens!
02:08cried Big.
02:09I never heard of such a thing.
02:12All the bears I know go to bed at 6 p.m. and they are never thirsty and they all wear red
02:17pyjamas with feet in them just like yours.
02:21Go to sleep now little bear.
02:23Go, go to sleep.
02:26But I don't want to go.
02:28whispered Small pretty soon.
02:31I want to stay.
02:33Because what a bear really needs is another bear.
02:36One that will never go away.
02:39Especially in the night.
02:41I am here, whispered Big.
02:43I am here my own dear little bear.
02:46And I will never never go away.
02:49Yes, said Small.
02:51I know.
02:53But I need somebody to hold me.
02:55Oh terrible bear, cried Big, oh hear of mine you are not small at all, you are huge, you
03:02are the loudest noise I ever hear.
03:05You are the most enormous pest.
03:08Why do I still love you best when of all the bears in town tonight you are the very very
03:12worst.
03:14Then in the big small rocking chair in the right kind of dark for any size bear they
03:18rocked and they rocked and they rocked.
03:21And guess which one of them fell asleep first.
03:25The end.
