00:00So, EJ, tell us what it's like for you when you're practicing or in the middle of training.
00:05Maybe a lot of people think that training is a bit more glamorous than it is.
00:11That's really, to be honest, my life is really nomadic, repetitive, maybe not as boring as it is, but it is kind of boring.
00:20So, you know, I always do the same thing. It's a repetitive process. It's the same.
00:26You know, you want to perfect your craft, you need to train again and again until you know it like the back of your hand.
00:33And you can do it basically with your eyes closed. So, yeah, so that's what we do.
00:38I train twice a day, eight to ten times a week.
00:42So that means like, you know, some are one time a day, some are twice a day.
00:46Yeah, I mean, I enjoy it. You know, I enjoy the challenge of it.
00:50But at the same time, I would be lying if I say every time I go to the oval or the training area, I'm excited and let's go.
00:57I'm ready. Of course, there are times that, you know, I really pull myself out of the bed and said, hey, you know, this is something I need to do.
01:04You want to be better? These are the days that I just need to bite my lip and say, hey, you know, this is what it takes.
01:10So, yeah, I mean, training is fun and all, but at the same time, it gets serious from time to time.
01:16You know, to be honest with you, me, like a lot of other Filipinos,
01:19pole vaulting really just came into our awareness at the last Olympics when we watched you.
01:26I mean, I'm speaking from experience here. I knew what pole vaulting was, but I didn't really know how it worked.
01:31You go a number of times and you do the same jump and then just see the highest that you can go, right?
01:36So is this the kind of training you do on a daily basis? Your drills are also like that, like running and jumping on a daily basis?
01:44Not really. It's different. Pole vaulting is a very complex and very technical event.
01:49Even in, you know, where we're part of track and field, it's really a little bit out of their dimension, I guess.
01:57You don't see people running around with sticks, planting it in a box and then trying to fling themselves over another bar.
02:03So pole vaulting, I can divide it as track, which is the running part of it.
02:07And maybe until the takeoff where I actually jump. But then the other part is actually gymnastics.
02:13You know, the aerial spatial awareness and everything. It's quite gymnastics.
02:17And to be able to connect both of that, I would say that's strength.
02:21That's going to be in the gym. That's going to be, you know, the work that we do in the gym.
02:24So these are the things that we need to train in a week and in one micro cycle. It's the plan.
02:31So we do some running. We do some weightlifting. We do gymnastics.
02:36I do similar things like Kaloy, but not in that level.
02:40You know, he's like here and I'm like, I'm scratching the surface, you know.
02:44So, yeah. So I do a bit of weightlifting. Of course, not as well as good as Heidi.
02:49But, you know, we have these things that hopefully accumulates and, you know, make me a better pole vaulter.
02:56So sometimes, for example, for Monday, I'll do some jumps.
03:00That's the first thing I would do, the actual vaulting. And maybe in the evening, I'll do some weightlifting.
03:05Some strength training. And then the next morning, I'll do some running.
03:08And then in the afternoon, I'll do some gymnastics.
03:11And then the day after, I'll do some speed endurance for overall fitness.
03:15So these are the type of, how do you say, I guess, my routine in a week's time.
03:22So much work and effort. And then to put into, you know, when you're watching it,
03:26that looks like, you know, a few seconds or a few minutes.
