00:00From England, back to the country now is the Filipino Rugby Superstar, Marco Smith.
00:09Together with his brother and other coaches, they are teaching freely to the young athletes in Quezon City.
00:15The Sports Bytes is brought to you by BAM Alegre.
00:23Rugby Union, a physical sports that combines soccer and American football.
00:28A combination of strength, speed, and speed.
00:33In England, the 25-year-old Rugby Superstar, Marco Smith, who is proud to be Filipino, is shining brightly.
00:40Very proud, to be honest. Brothers and I were born here in Makati, lived here for 8 years.
00:48So we have a close connection growing up. My mom always instilled good family values.
00:56Marco is back to the country now to teach freely to the young athletes in Quezon City.
01:00In a free clinic, he taught the world-class talent as a fly-half of the Copanang Harlequins from the top-level league, the Premiership Rugby.
01:10So this morning, Marco is going to teach us a basic rugby skill.
01:14So which skill would it be that you will be teaching us today?
01:17I'll show you a spin pass. So the pass we use of right and left hand.
01:21This is the basic one.
01:24You have to get it spinning.
01:25So how do I do it?
01:26So, spin it.
01:28Perfect.
01:30Very good.
01:31The Payatas Sports Center is a safe space for these kids who are inspired by their dreams to have a chance.
01:40Athlete coach Ronalyn Lagata is one of those who got out of poverty with the help of sports.
01:46I had a chance to be a varsity player in UST.
01:50And then I had a chance to be here in Payatas.
01:55Because of course, our life here in Payatas is not easy.
01:58Mostly, people's lives are in danger.
02:02Ronalyn and Marco are tag-teams in training more than 30 kids here in Payatas Sports Center.
02:08It's important for Marco to share the discipline in sports that he got from his mother, who grew up in Cagayan de Oro.
02:15I was nervous.
02:17Nervous.
02:19And I was really strict to them in terms of their education from the very start.
02:25Just inculcating in their heads the discipline.
02:29Marco is also with his siblings, including Luke, who also plays for the Philippine National Rugby Team, the Volcanoes.
02:37The main thing is just to inspire the young generation in both rugby and soccer.
02:43It's important for us as national athletes to sort of spread what we know, spread the knowledge, the coaching that we've received,
02:52and try to inspire the new generations.
02:58In the field of sports, Marco is a world-class rugby superstar.
03:03To the young athletes of Payatas, it's an important lesson.
03:07If you put your whole heart into a dedication, you can go far.
