00:00Now, college football is just a couple of weeks away.
00:06SEC football, I don't believe, is on the 24th of August.
00:10I believe it's the following week, Labor Day weekend,
00:11when they get started.
00:13And their sort of view of college football
00:16is going to be a lot different this year, Sam.
00:18You know, they've added teams to the conference.
00:20And what they've also added is an injury report.
00:23And people may be confused with this
00:25because, again, during the week when coaches talk,
00:27you sort of get an idea for who could be in
00:29or who could be out.
00:30But we've seen so many players, Sam, an hour or two
00:34before games being declared either ineligible to play
00:37for injuries or other reasons.
00:40And the Southeastern Conference is diving in and saying,
00:42hey, look, we're going to give you some updates
00:43and more detailed updates on this.
00:46Is it just for sports bettors?
00:49Yeah, I don't think it's entirely for sports bettors,
00:52but it was really interesting in the reporting
00:54that CBS Sports did earlier this week,
00:56saying that mandatory injury reporting
00:58was going to come to the SEC,
01:00which would bring it in line with the Big Ten,
01:02which kind of started to do this last year.
01:05It was really interesting.
01:05They said that the changes
01:06revolved around betting concerns.
01:09You know, in sports like the NFL and the NBA,
01:11you have these injury reports that go beyond
01:14what the coaches say in the middle of the week.
01:16And bettors know who's going to play,
01:18who's not going to play.
01:19But in college football,
01:20a lot of that is really a mystery.
01:22And that's put a lot of the pressure
01:24on the student athletes.
01:25According to the NCAA,
01:2715 to 25% of high-profile college athletes
01:30receive some sort of abusive message related to gambling.
01:34So that's been a big priority for the NCAA.
01:37They actually considered adding injury reporting in 2018
01:40after the Supreme Court allowed states
01:42to legalize sports betting.
01:44In lieu of that decision,
01:45adding injury reporting to create further transparency,
01:48especially because they make so much money
01:50off of the game as well.
01:51So, you know, obviously you want to be consistent
01:53with what you're putting out there
01:55and what you're getting from the sports books,
01:56but they actually declined to do it
01:58sort of at the last minute.
01:59It was a really weird situation.
02:00The Big Ten had really pushed for it,
02:02but then the NCAA seemingly at the last minute
02:04came out and said, you know what?
02:05We have concerns over sharing player data,
02:09player health, all this stuff when they're amateurs.
02:11That certainly didn't stop them
02:13from sharing that data with the sports books.
02:15They have a deal with Genius Sports
02:16that gets all the player tracking data.
02:18So now in this situation,
02:20if the SEC comes out, adds injury reporting,
02:22that would seem to add the kind of extra layer of protection
02:26between the athletes and the sports bettors out there,
02:29because this information is really invaluable
02:31when you don't have it publicly.
02:33And if the SEC does it, the Big Ten's already doing it,
02:36I'm sure the rest of the Power Five would likely follow.
02:38So it's nice to see this kind of no brainer thing
02:41finally get done or close to be done from this standpoint.
02:44And it definitely has some big, big ramifications
02:47with sports betting.
02:49Yeah, people would be paying more attention to that
02:52going into a game than they ever have been.
02:54Real quick, Sam, what did you make of the big fine
02:56given to Bet365, $500,000?
03:01I thought it was just an example
03:02that you have to follow the rules.
03:04A lot of the time, sports books can adjust the payouts
03:07if there's an obvious error on odds.
03:08They do that in so many states.
03:10But New Jersey is one of the few
03:11where you have to get the permission first.
03:13So I think it's an example that, you know,
03:15when you launch a new sports book,
03:16you have to follow every state's rules,
03:18not just kind of, you know,
03:19think that there's a blanket protection for all states.
