00:06suspicious deaths.
00:10Madrid has introduced a new initiative for keeping people cool during heatwaves.
00:21Former separatist leader of Catalonia Carlos Puigdemont has returned to Barcelona after
00:26fleeing nearly seven years ago.
00:34Israel has said it will no longer facilitate Norwegian diplomats to work in Palestine.
00:42Eight diplomats have already had their accreditation revoked by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which
00:47said it made the decision in response to Norway's alleged anti-Israel conduct, including its
00:53recognition of a Palestinian state.
00:59Norway has called the move an extreme act and said it will have consequences for its
01:04relationship with the Israeli government.
01:08It comes as a Human Rights Watch report found Israeli soldiers killed at least seven Palestinians
01:14and severely wounded two when they attacked a Gaza City home in December.
01:21The family members said there were no militants or weapons inside the house and that the
01:26family had no connection to any armed group.
01:30The Israeli military has not yet responded to the allegations.
01:35Meanwhile Saudi Arabia has called the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran a
01:41flagrant violation of international law, although it has not made a direct reference to Israel.
01:49The statement comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East as fears of a wider regional
01:54war grow.
01:59Two doctors and a nurse from a hospital in Bucharest have been arrested in a case of
02:04suspicious deaths.
02:06In mid-April, 17 patients died within four days in the hospital's intensive care unit,
02:12triggering a series of investigations.
02:15Prosecutors say the doctors had hatched a plan to deliberately lead the patients into
02:20cardiorespiratory arrest.
02:32The aim, prosecutors say, was to cause the death of patients whom the doctors deemed
02:38should no longer be kept alive.
02:40The doctors have been charged with aggravated murder and attempted murder and the nurse
02:45with perjury.
02:53The manager of the hospital announced that both he and the medical director will submit
02:58their resignation.
03:03A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the southern coast of Japan on Thursday.
03:09The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was centered off the southeast coast
03:14of Japan's main island of Kyushu.
03:17A tsunami advisory was issued following the quake, predicting waves of up to one meter.
03:23Nuclear plants on Kyushu and Shikoku were checked in order to see if they had sustained
03:28any damage, whilst local media reported broken windows at the Miyazaki airport near the epicenter.
03:38The former separatist leader of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, has returned to Spain after
03:43fleeing nearly seven years ago.
03:47He says he's returned to Barcelona to campaign against socialist Salvador Illa's bid to be
03:52regional president, which would bring an end to 14 years of separatist-led governments.
04:00Addressing the crowd, Puigdemont accused the Spanish authorities of a crackdown on the
04:05Catalan separatist movement.
04:09Puigdemont left Spain to avoid arrest after he organised an illegal independence referendum
04:14in an attempt to break Catalonia away from the rest of the country.
04:19He has now left his self-imposed exile in Brussels and faces pre-trial detention in
04:24Spain for embezzlement of public funds.
04:29Although a contentious amnesty bill for separatist supporters involved in the illegal 2017 ballot
04:35was passed by Spain's parliament earlier this year, the Supreme Court has refused to apply
04:41the law to Puigdemont and two other former regional ministers.
04:47It's the middle of August and temperatures are soaring, but not everyone can escape the
04:52city. Some have to work and others can't afford a vacation.
04:58In Europe, vacation poverty affects 40 million people and heatwaves have only made things
05:04worse.
05:06But major cities are increasingly offering options to stay cool and entertained, such
05:11as the Take Shelter in Culture initiative in Madrid.
05:29It's not just aimed at tourists. Some libraries, cinemas and museums offer free guided tours,
05:38discounts or performances during the hottest hours of the day.
05:58The Seculo de Bellas Artes has become the standout climate shelter this summer. Its
06:12ancient ballroom has been transformed into a green oasis.
06:20People are excited. They can work, relax or simply hang out here.
06:27There are also heat shelters for the little ones.
06:58This one near the river is a favourite among parents and kids.
07:18According to the National Statistics Institute, one in three households with children in Spain
07:23cannot afford even a week of vacation.
07:31Far-right demonstrations anticipated by UK police across the country failed to materialise
07:37as peaceful anti-racism protesters showed up instead.
07:42Police had braced themselves for more violence following a week of rioting and disorder fuelled
07:47by misinformation over a stabbing attack against young girls in Southport.
07:52Added up to racism and other groups planned counter-protests, but in most places were
07:57instead met with no opposition.
08:00Large peaceful crowds gathered outside agencies and law firms specialising in immigration,
08:06which had been listed by internet groups as possible targets of far-right activity.
08:11It was a vast change from rioting that erupted throughout parts of the UK since July 30th.
08:17Far-right extremists had clashed with police, fuelled by misinformation about the stabbing
08:21attack that killed three girls in Southport.
08:25Social media users falsely identified the suspect as an immigrant and a Muslim.
08:33Upcoming Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna were cancelled after Austrian authorities arrested
08:38a 19-year-old man for allegedly plotting an attack in connection with the events.
08:44The man was arrested in Tarnitz, south of Vienna and a second man who was believed to
08:49be in contact with the first suspect was arrested in the Austrian capital itself.
09:20Local media say that the man was previously known to authorities as a terrorism suspect.
09:30Authorities were tipped off about the attack by a foreign security service and the man
09:35was reportedly arrested following a large police operation with over 100 nearby residents
09:41evacuated.
09:42All three of Swift's upcoming sold-out concerts at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna were
09:48cancelled following the arrests.
09:52Fifteen Russian athletes competing at this year's Olympics have an uneasy status as individual
09:57neutral athletes.
09:59Some in the Olympic village oppose them taking part and Russian opinion is divided, with
10:04some Russian politicians describing those competing as traitors.
10:10Activists gathered information from Russian athletes' social media leading up to the
10:13Games flagging posts they considered showed support for the war.
10:18One of these was allegedly Diana Schneider who became one of the first Russians to win
10:21a medal at the Paris Olympics after taking silver in women's doubles.
10:43Ukraine wanted Russian athletes excluded and opposed Olympic efforts to include them
10:52as neutral athletes.
10:55Ukraine briefly boycotted Olympic qualifying competitions that allowed Russians to attend
11:00but changed their policy facing the risk of not being represented at the Olympics at all.
11:14The Olympics are about peace and all wars were stopped for a period but Russia did not
11:26stop and during these games there were massive attacks on the cities of Ukraine.
11:31So how can a terrorist be allowed to compete for peace?
