00:00Several neighbouring countries of the DRC have reported incidents of mpocs in Burundi.
00:05At least 25 cases have reportedly been detected across roughly 10 districts, including the
00:10economic capital Bujumbura.
00:12No deaths have been reported so far.
00:14Rwanda has recently confirmed two hospital cases, but the first patients already recovered.
00:19Uganda has reported two cases as well in Kasese, a province bordering the DRC.
00:25However, Doctors Without Borders fears that regional case numbers could surge amidst population
00:31displacement caused by conflicts in eastern Congo.
00:34The viral infection causes rashes, lesions and painful muscle aches that can become severe
00:40if left untreated.
00:42The current strain spreading from DRC's South Kivu province is more lethal than the
00:47one that caused the 2022 global mpocs outbreak, with an African death rate of around 3% rather
00:53than 0.2% in 2022.
00:56Mpocs cases have risen in the US and the UK this year, but authorities are especially
01:01worried about Africa, where fatalities are higher.
01:04Outbreaks in the West have been shut down with vaccines and swift treatment programs,
01:09few of which have been made available in Africa.
01:13Medical charities have called for this imbalance to be addressed as soon as possible.
