00:00Harshest place to be, that's how EJ Obiena described his 4th place finish in the men's pole vault of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

00:09EJ also answered the questions about his possible competition in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

00:16Maki Pulido was able to answer them.

00:19From the 11th overall place of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, EJ Obiena moved to the 4th place overall of the men's pole vault of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

00:31That's a big success that was welcomed by many supporters.

00:35But in a post, EJ apologized and called the 4th place in sports with only 3 podium finishes as the harshest place to be.

00:43Despite being weak and not able to win a medal, it was still special for EJ, especially when he was accompanied by his parents in the Paris Olympics.

01:03When asked if he would be eliminated in the next Los Angeles Olympics 2028, EJ became emotional.

01:09He said that he wants to be whole first.

01:12EJ will finish the remaining pole vault tournaments this year.

01:17And he will prioritize his health that has been on the side for a long time.

01:21He has been waiting for a back injury since 2022.

01:24Because of the pain in his lumbar spine, the lower part of his back was affected.

01:28EJ was not able to do a good pole vault for two weeks before the Paris Olympics.

01:34According to his friend Michael James Lafferty, instead of going back to the Paris Olympics, they looked for a medical procedure to temporarily remove the pain.

01:57But EJ did not use this as a reason why he was not able to win a medal in the Paris Olympics.

02:05It affected my preparation going in. It affected my consistency. It affected, I think, my overall program going into Paris.

02:14For now, one day at a time, EJ said.

02:17The reason why I can't give you guys the answer you guys I think wants to have is just that I don't want to lie.

02:25I need to understand that there's going to be another four pains taking years.

02:28I need to focus everything and live this life.

02:33And yeah, it takes a little bit of thinking to understand that.

02:39And I think I need to give myself time.

02:43And yeah, it's a decision that's pretty big.
