Transcript
00:00Here is Suni Lee.
00:21When I watched her in training, she just looked so strong and so much healthier than when I'd seen her in last year.
01:01Falling out of that turn, but the artistry is what I'm noticing about this routine. Of course, there's increased deductions.
01:11The judges are looking for body movement, elongation, and she's doing a really nice job of continuing that throughout this routine.
01:30The reigning Olympic all-around champ, Suni Lee.
01:46There's the number for Suni Lee, and even 13.
01:49A moment ago, Suni Lee on vault.
01:54So we saw Suni open up on floor, but the 21-year-old from St. Paul on vault.
02:01There's a look.
02:06She told us, shockingly, bars and vault have been the hardest to build stamina.
02:11She said her legs still aren't as strong as she wants them to be.
02:18Yurchenko fall, so not as much difficulty as some of the athletes in the competition.
02:24We say the word Yurchenko a lot. That's a round off on the board. Backhands spring onto the table.
02:2913.15, the number in that yellow. So, not green, but not red either.
02:34Suni Lee, ready to go on balance beam.
02:37You talk about the confidence, and I'm laughing because everyone, you know a gymnast.
02:43It's a sport that breeds type A perfectionists, so even though you win an Olympic gold medal, you still have to continuously prove to yourself that you're confident and comfortable on the event, just like Suni Lee.
02:58We talked about her pacing this comeback after two different types of kidney illnesses, which she describes as in remission right now, still getting treatment, figuring things out, but not a part of the all-around tonight.
03:18Floor, vault, and this beam, three of the four.
03:22She won beam at American Classics, and she looks really good and didn't even do her full difficulty at that competition.
03:31Talk about an athlete that says she's only between 60 and 75% and is winning competitions here on balance beam.
03:40Beautiful, dynamic, aggressive triple series.
03:56Adjustment, big deduction with that leg up, and broken connection.
04:02That's a gainer layout full, so with that dismount, it actually adds three-tenths more than a gainer in a tuck position, so her coaches were really excited about the upgrade on the dismount.
04:22An illness different than injuries, but we've seen her come back from injury before.
04:27Remember the U.S. Championships, two-time U.S. all-around silver medalist, and not feel ready, not feel entirely prepared, and be very good in the moment.
