00:00I'm going to show you how to do it.
00:30How are you?
00:52Good evening.
00:53This is Carlos Montero from Paris.
00:55What a wonderful weekend for the Caribbean in sport.
01:01Last night was a golden night.
01:03Gold for Santa Lucia, Dominica, Granada, bronze.
01:07Today, Dominican Republic, also they won two bronze medals.
01:12Fantastic day.
01:14Tennis, we have a new king, Djokovic, finally he got his gold medal.
01:20He beat Alcaraz.
01:21We are going to talk during this half an hour about all those stories and much, much more.
01:27Let's go to see what he has.
01:29Eduardo Regonesi for us today.
01:31Eduardo, go ahead.
01:34Congratulations for Chile.
01:36The first gold medal in a long time.
01:41Chile in 16 years, first medal in 16 years, first gold medal since 2004 for Chilean Federation
01:49that has not been doing very well.
01:51We will talk about that also, but the main focus is the Caribbean, as you well mentioned.
01:57Great 24 hours for the Caribbean, especially smaller islands that are not used to achieving
02:04Olympic success.
02:05They had very, very good performance last night and early this morning.
02:08We will talk about that.
02:09Of course, the new king in tennis here in Paris 2024, Carlos, whenever you need, we'll
02:14be back here.
02:17Thank you, Eduardo.
02:18Thank you very much.
02:20This weekend, Imane Khalif is the Argelian boxer who was in a big controversy because
02:28her rival, the first time, Italian boxer, said that she was fighting again a man.
02:34The federation of the Olympics said, no, it's a woman.
02:38She has highest level of testosterone.
02:41She fought last night.
02:43Charlie was there.
02:44Charlie, give us a go ahead to see what's going on with her.
02:50Hi, Carlos.
02:51How are you?
02:52Imane Khalif has reached the semifinals of the women's welterweight division after her
02:56victory over Anna Harmari.
02:59We had a chance to talk with her supporters, so stay tuned because we'll be back with more
03:03information.
03:04Thank you, Charlie.
03:05We'll be back with you in a little while and let's see how people react.
03:13Charlie told me that most people, they were cheering for her and she's going to fight
03:18Tuesday.
03:19She's going to fight for a medal and she's close to get one.
03:23Let's go back to the story about Chilean gold medal.
03:27The president, Gabriel Boric, he published a tweet congratulating Gabriela Corvette.
03:34She said, you make history for sport.
03:36Your hard work and dedication pay off.
03:39You make us all very proud.
03:41Let's go with the Chilean who make our team here at Telesur proud, Eduardo Regonesi.
03:47Eduardo, you're going to get a gold medal, I think, at the end of this Olympics.
03:51You deserve one.
03:52I'm sure you are happy for Chile and you have so many things to talk to us about.
04:00Thank you, Carlos.
04:01Let me say, just being here, I think it's a reward enough because it's a great opportunity
04:06to be here and to cover all the amazing sports that we've been witnessing.
04:11Just a quick note on Francesca Corvette's gold medal.
04:15As we said, first gold medal since Nicolás Massou and Fernando González got the doubles
04:21gold medal in tennis.
04:22Massou also achieved that on the singles tennis court in Athens 2000.
04:27It's been a long, long time for Chilean athletes.
04:30Then Fernando González in 2008 got a silver medal at tennis as well.
04:35Tennis is the main sport.
04:37This is a new sport for Chile shooting.
04:41to receive an Olympic gold medal and, of course, first medal in this discipline.
04:46Let's talk about the Caribbean Islands.
04:49We talked about it just a couple of minutes ago.
04:52Very, very good night.
04:53St. Lucia, Julian Alfred, the athlete from St. Lucia, won the gold medal at the 100-meter
05:00dash.
05:01She was not the favorite.
05:02She defeated the favorite American, Sha'Carri Richardson.
05:06She was coming to Paris as the world champion and it was a big, big upset for the American.
05:12A lot of celebration as supposed it was going to happen in the small island of the Caribbean.
05:19Just so you know, St. Lucia has been participating in Olympics since 1996 and they participated
05:25since then until now with only 36 athletes.
05:29To have a gold medal already, it's a very, very big task and it's very, very amazing
05:35what they accomplished.
05:37Another island that was celebrating is Dominica.
05:39Tia Lamphon, last night, won the gold triple jump.
05:44Of course, we were all expecting Yolima Rojas to be the protagonist in this discipline.
05:50Sadly, she didn't make it, but Tia Lamphon making Dominica proud.
05:56Only two athletes from Dominica in this delegation, again, a couple of numbers.
06:01Since 1996, they've been participating.
06:03They only brought 24 athletes since Atlanta in 1996 until Paris 2024.
06:11Another island that celebrated, Grenada, Lindo and Victor got the bronze at the triple jump.
06:17Again, another number.
06:19I like numbers, so I'm going to give you a couple of stats.
06:21They've been participating since 1984, 59 athletes in total until now in Paris 2024.
06:28I give you these numbers just to demonstrate, to put in perspective how big of an accomplishment
06:33is for these small, small countries to achieve Olympic medals.
06:37Dominica, in fact, the population, the total population, excuse me, Saint Lucia, the total
06:43population of Saint Lucia, it's 180,000 people.
06:47The Camp Nou, Barcelona Stadium, seats 100,000 people.
06:51Almost the whole population of Saint Lucia can fit in two stadiums of Barcelona.
06:57It's just to prove, to demonstrate how amazing these results are.
07:02In other news, today in boxing was a very good day for Dominican Republic.
07:06Two of their boxers achieved the bronze medal in the first turn, Junior Alcantara with a
07:11very controversial fight.
07:13He fought the local, Bilal Benana on the 41 kilograms.
07:19It was a controversial fight.
07:21Of course, the crowd was supporting the French athlete, but a lot of people say that the
07:25referees also got affected by the environment because the fight should have been called
07:30for Junior.
07:31He saw it as a fair fight.
07:33He was very upset.
07:34He was crying at the end of the match, and he promised to keep working hard to obtain
07:38another medal in Los Angeles 2028.
07:43Javier Pinares, also from Dominican Republic, lost against Nurbek Oralbay in the ADK.
07:49He also secured the bronze medal for the Dominican Republic.
07:52And Arlen Lopez also lost in the semifinals to Krizniak from Ukraine, and he secured the
07:59bronze medal for Cuba at the 80 kilogram discipline.
08:03And lastly, Erislandy Alvarez won his match against Lasha Guruli and made it to the gold
08:08medal match.
08:09It's going to happen later on this week.
08:11So Cuba securing either a gold medal or a silver medal.
08:16That's it with the boxing.
08:17Let's talk a little bit about tennis.
08:19Novak Djokovic defeated Carlitos Alcaraz.
08:23I know, Carlos, you're a big fan of tennis.
08:24We talked about it early.
08:26You thought that Novak was going to win it.
08:28I thought Carlos Alcaraz was going to win it.
08:30You won this time.
08:31But Novak Djokovic is something amazing.
08:35There's a lot of talk.
08:36Who's the greatest of all time?
08:38I know there's a lot of people that like Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic.
08:42It's a little bit more resistant than these two players.
08:45The first two are very well liked by everybody.
08:48Novak Djokovic, he's been involved in a couple of controversies, so people are still hesitant
08:53to call him the greatest of all time.
08:54But I think the numbers don't lie.
08:57He has the most Grand Slams out of anybody, 24.
09:00He has 40 Masters 1000, which are the next level tournament.
09:04He has more than anybody.
09:06He has seven Masters finals, ATP finals, more than anybody else.
09:11And right now he has one gold medal and one bronze medal, two Olympic medals, the same
09:16as Federer, the same as Nadal.
09:18So I think the competition is over.
09:21I think Novak, with this medal, he is going to be considered the greatest of all time,
09:26at least in terms of championship, in terms of titles that he won in his career, Carlos.
09:33You were talking before about the emotion, about those kids from Dominican Republic,
09:38the boxer.
09:39I was surprised when he won the match, a guy who has 37 years old.
09:44He's the oldest who played a final.
09:49He was shaking.
09:50He was really nervous.
09:52On the other side, Carlos Alcaraz, when he lost, there was a picture of him, and he was
09:57almost crying.
09:58He was frustrated, because it must be awful, because he's been playing great in this tournament,
10:03in these Olympics, and he lost.
10:07Most people were thinking, like you, that he was going to win, and it was a big upset
10:11for Hukovic, and now he's one of the greatest players of all the history.
10:17You see a lot of emotion on the athletic.
10:19You have a chance to go to different events.
10:22It's amazing how they feel, those guys, what they are doing here, isn't it?
10:28Exactly, and we are lucky enough to talk to them at the mix zone for the press, the special
10:33area prepared for the press, which happens probably one or two minutes after they compete.
10:38The adrenaline is up here.
10:41They are still shaking.
10:42They're very emotional.
10:43Whether they win or they lose, I think they're still in that high of adrenaline, high of
10:47emotion, so we get to catch them right at the moment.
10:51As you said, even athletes like Diokovic, Federer, who have won so many things, they
10:57still get very, very upset when they lose, and that shows you the drive of competition,
11:02the drive of winning that they still have.
11:04Even at 37, Diokovic could easily be in his house, watching tennis, traveling the world,
11:10but he's still competing.
11:11He's competing with players that sometimes are 17, 18 years younger than him, and he's
11:16still giving it his all because he has that drive, that drive to be the best, that drive
11:21to succeed, that drive to win a gold medal, and that's what happened today.
11:26Great for Jokovic.
11:27Eduardo, thank you very much.
11:29I'll talk to you tomorrow and tonight in the Spanish, in TelevisiĂłn, 5 o'clock, Caracas
11:34time.
11:35Thank you, Eduardo.
11:36Let's keep talking about the legend in the sport, and we were talking with Eduardo about
11:41emotion.
11:42I remember in 2016 in Rio, I had the chance to interview Monica Puig.
11:47She gave the first gold medal to Puerto Rico, and she was really, like Eduardo was saying,
11:54she was really emotional, and I had the chance to interview her two days later, and she was
11:59almost crying when I was talking to her, but let's see what she did in that Olympic
12:03game that was something fantastic for Puerto Rico.
12:10But for some, it was an unexpected victory.
12:13Puerto Rican Monica Puig was indeed unstoppable at Rio 2016, winning constantly in every event,
12:21one after the other, until she reached the final to face German favorite Angelique Kerber.
12:27American Serena Williams, world number one and big favorite, had already been eliminated
12:31in the third round of the tournament.
12:34After her triumph, Monica Puig asserted that the key to her victory was mental strength.
12:39She started to believe even more in herself.
12:42With every match she won, she kept learning and kept growing.
12:46Puig was named Best Female Athlete of Rio 2016 at the Association of National Olympic
12:52Committees awards.
12:54Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in September 1993, Puig grew up with her family in Miami.
13:00At the age of six, her mother became her first coach and introduced her to tennis, until
13:05Puig turned professional at the age of 16.
13:08The island of Puerto Rico began sending delegations to the Olympic Games in 1948.
13:13Until Puig's triumph, Puerto Rico had only eight medals, one of them gold.
13:18It came closest in boxing, between its Olympic debut in London 1948 and Atlanta 1996, and
13:25in wrestling in London 2012.
13:37Let's talk about Argelia.
13:39I won the first gold medal in this tournament, in this Olympics, France 2024.
13:45They do it in gymnastics.
13:47It was something amazing.
13:48They are not used to do great in this discipline.
13:52Argelia has the first gold medal in gymnastics.
13:57Let's talk about another legend of the sport of our people, of our countries.
14:02Let's go to Costa Rica.
14:05Claudia Paul, she gave the first gold medal to Costa Rica.
14:09She's a legend.
14:10Now she works for the TV station as a commentator.
14:15She has a daughter who followed her step, but let's see how far Claudia swam in her career.
14:28Our Costa Rican swimmer Claudia Paul won a gold medal and two bronze medals for her country
14:33in Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000.
14:37In the competition that led her to win the medals, she swam a total of 800 meters in
14:468.5 minutes.
14:47At this speed, she would have swum the entire east coast of her country in a total of 35
14:53hours, or in just half an hour, she would have crossed Capacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro
14:59from one end to the other.
15:07Here's one more feat of our people.
15:15Okay, we are getting information, another medal for Philippines, the golden boy, that's
15:21the way they call it, Carlos Yulo.
15:23Right now, he's a two-time Olympic champion, two golds in two days for Philippines.
15:29That's really amazing.
15:31Let's talk about another hero of these Olympics.
15:35We are going to talk about what he did in his career.
15:39I mean, it's really amazing.
15:43Usain Bolt.
15:44Usain Bolt, one of the fastest men in the universe.
15:47He did great in the Olympics.
15:49He has a chance to participate.
15:51Let's see his story.
15:57Our Jamaican spinner Usain Bolt reached a speed of 4.72 kilometers per hour when he
16:04set his world record in 100 meters dash in 9.58 seconds.
16:12Jamaica, his native country, is an island whose perimeter measures 1,022 kilometers.
16:19It would take Bolt 23 hours and 20 minutes to run around the island at that speed.
16:26It is one more defeat of our people.
16:35We have a lot of competition today.
16:38Athletism is going on right now.
16:41And that's something very interesting.
16:44And I'm sure we are going to get more medals for precision.
16:48Cuba has a big chance also to get the medals.
16:51We are going to pay attention to that.
16:54Now, let's talk about the Argentinian boxer.
16:56Yesterday, I think it was one of the most boxers in the world.
17:00Now, let's talk about the Argentinian boxer.
17:02Yesterday, I think it was one of the most boxing matches that more people wanted to watch
17:07because in the main caliphate, she was in the center of controversy after beating very
17:13bad the Italian opponent in the first match.
17:17The second match she won yesterday.
17:19She's going to fight for a medal this coming week.
17:23Charlie was in the match and he got the reaction of some people about this controversy.
17:28Is she a man? Is she a woman?
17:30She has the right to participate in this tournament.
17:33Let's see what people think about this.
17:37Hey Carlos, it's official.
17:39Iman Khalif, whose gender eligibility has been called into question, was in tears after
17:44being guaranteed a welterweight medal at the Paris Olympic Games after beating Hungarian
17:49Anna Hamori.
17:51The 25-year-old's previous fight lasted only 46 seconds.
17:55In the quarterfinals, the Algerian entered the ring with cheers from her supporters and
17:59won the full three rounds before winning by unanimous decision.
18:03This is what people had to say about the fight.
18:05It was amazing.
18:07We were all here, all the Algerians here to support Iman.
18:10We're so proud of her.
18:11She won.
18:12So we're so, so happy.
18:14She's so strong and it was insane.
18:17Yeah, she was so strong and we really hope she wins gold and she's going to get us that
18:23gold medal.
18:24So we're really happy.
18:25Why do you think there was so much controversy before?
18:27I think it's a controversy that was based on nothing and I think it's very, very difficult
18:32to do that to someone.
18:33So I'm really happy that she stayed focused on her game and she was so strong today.
18:38So we're so happy.
18:39Yeah, that was a perfect fight.
18:41Really impressive.
18:42That was pretty cool, but the Hungarian woman, I don't know her name, not really fair play
18:51at the end.
18:52I didn't do that to appreciate that, but whatever.
18:55It was a good fight.
18:56She was so strong, actually.
18:58She proved to everyone that she's a strong lady, no matter what they said about her,
19:01no matter what they thought about her.
19:03She proved that in the game, she was strong.
19:06She was really focused on the game.
19:10So we're really happy of her and we hope she will get the gold because she deserved it
19:13for real.
19:14It was wonderful.
19:15We are so happy and we congratulate our champion, Iman.
19:20We are here with you and thank you for this victory.
19:23Well, there you have it, Carlos.
19:25Despite all the controversy, Iman never gave up and now she's guaranteed a bronze medal.
19:29Because remember, in the final, the winner gets gold, the loser gets silver, and the
19:34two losers from the semifinal get bronze medals.
19:36That's right, both of them.
19:37So a happy ending to a crazy story.
19:40Back to you, Carlos.
19:43Thank you, Charlie.
19:44Thank you, Charlie.
19:45That's really different.
19:46We were talking about boxing in the male category, about the guys from the Dominican Republic
19:52that lost the fight, but because in boxing they give you four medals, one gold, one silver
19:59and two bronze.
20:01That's the reason we have two bronze winners.
20:04But let's see right now how is the medal count, how is it going.
20:09China is doing great.
20:11The Olympics, China is in first place.
20:14China has, so far, 19 golds.
20:19And 43.
20:21Okay, I think this updated, mine is a little more updated.
20:25It's 44 and 19.
20:26I have the United States in second place.
20:30I also have one more.
20:32When we are talking, there are different events and they are getting medals.
20:37So that's the reason.
20:38Maybe change what you are watching on TV.
20:40And what I have here, I have the last one.
20:42I have 17.
20:43And so far, the USA has 68 medals.
20:48They have the biggest delegation.
20:50So, of course, they are going to do so great.
20:53France, their home team, always home teams, they do great in the Olympics.
20:57So far, they have 12 gold medals, 43 all together.
21:01It's amazing when I see.
21:03Not everybody has the chance to go to the stadium.
21:06But people watch them.
21:07The typical cafe here in Paris, they have big television.
21:11And every time somebody wins, people celebrate.
21:14Leon Marchand, he's one of the most popular.
21:18He's a swimmer and he got a couple of gold medals.
21:21Australia is doing great.
21:22Great Britain.
21:23Then Germany has five gold medals and 12 all together.
21:29And if we go a little bit more down, we are going to see in position number 20.
21:34At least a few seconds ago, it was.
21:37No, now it's not anymore.
21:38Let me see.
21:39Brazil, now Brazil is in position number 23.
21:42I guess the Philippines got two.
21:44So, the Philippines again.
21:46Brazil has one gold and 10 medals all together.
21:50If we keep going down, we are going to see a little bit more of our region.
21:54Because, I mean, you know, Argentina has a gold medal.
21:58Guatemala has one gold medal.
22:00Argentina, that's something fantastic for our region.
22:03Chile won today.
22:05We were talking to Eduardo and shooting a gold medal.
22:08Something that makes the whole country proud.
22:12Ecuador, March has also one gold medal.
22:16Santa Lucia, never been there in the table of medals.
22:20Santa Lucia makes all the Caribbean proud.
22:25It has one gold medal.
22:26And that's something really historic.
22:28And we have to appreciate.
22:30We have to validate.
22:31Because they don't have the resources.
22:33They don't have the people.
22:34They are a small island.
22:35And they are here.
22:36And they are going back with the gold.
22:37It's something really, really amazing.
22:39Okay.
22:40I think that's all for today.
22:42Thank you for being with us.
22:45Tomorrow, we have much more information.
22:48And hopefully, we are going to bring you news about more medals for our people.
22:53See you tomorrow.
22:54Bye-bye.
22:55Adios, amigos.
23:23Music
23:32.
