00:00You may have a seat.
00:01If you have a question for Julian, you may raise your hand.
00:03We'll bring a microphone over to you, and I'll point to you so you can ask.
00:06If you could just state your name and your outlet.
00:08You can sit right there.
00:09Yeah.
00:10If you could just state your name and your outlet before you ask the question, that'd
00:12be great.
00:13All right.
00:14Let's start right here in the front row.
00:15We're bringing a microphone to you so they can hear you on the stream.
00:19We are streaming live, by the way, and if you have a question watching live, you can
00:22use the Ask OIS function on MyInfo.
00:26Tyler Dragon, USA Today.
00:28Julian, just describe the emotion when you crossed the finish line and saw you jumping
00:32up in the air and really excited.
00:34How does it feel to be an Olympic champion?
00:36It feels amazing, to be honest.
00:40I think that after waking up this morning, I wrote it down, Julian Alford, Olympic champion.
00:47I think just believing in myself and trusting that I could do it is what really mattered
00:51to me.
00:58Jonathan Gould, LetsRun.com.
00:59Julian, congratulations.
01:00Thank you.
01:01I'm wondering, there was rain on the track and it was raining a little bit during the
01:05warmups as well.
01:06How did that affect you if it did have any effect on you in the race or in your preparations,
01:12anything like that?
01:14You know what?
01:16Coach Flo sometimes happens straight in the rain.
01:18You've got to be prepared for anything at all.
01:21It didn't have any effect on me whatsoever.
01:25Hi, Rachel Bachman for the Wall Street Journal.
01:37My understanding is this is St. Louis's first Olympic medal in anything.
01:41Did you know about that and what does it mean to you to be the first in your country to
01:46do this?
01:47It means a lot to me.
01:48I did it indoors as well.
01:52So I definitely knew that St. Louisians would be watching and hoping that they could get
01:57their first Olympic gold, well, Olympic medal and it came as a goal.
02:01So I'm sure they're celebrating right now.
02:04Simon Drouin, La Presse.
02:10On your right, you mentioned a lot about your coach Flo.
02:16Since your win, how pivotal has he been in your gold medal today?
02:21Can you describe a little bit your relationship with him?
02:25So I met Coach Flo in 2019.
02:27He recruited me to come to the University of Texas, Austin.
02:31Earlier on this year, especially after the win indoors, I was just so hard on myself
02:36and feeling so much pressure, feeling like I have to go out there and represent my country
02:41again.
02:42Just seeing the amount of people that supported me.
02:44But he helped me turn that pressure into motivation and he's been my rock.
02:49He's been there with me through the ups and the downs, through the hard times.
02:54I'm just happy.
02:55He never gave up on me.
02:57And he's like a dad to me, a mentor to me.
02:59I'm just really happy.
03:01He believed in me and this is why I'm here right now today, sitting in front of you guys.
03:08Julian Longman, New York Times.
03:11Did you say you wrote down this morning, Julian Alfred, Olympic champion, and where were you?
03:19So I did at five in the morning.
03:21I usually wake up so early on race days to just journal, to write down something.
03:27And also I took a snap in the elevator after breakfast and just said, Julian Alfred, Olympic
03:33champion.
03:34Oh, you said it.
03:36You didn't write it down.
03:37Pardon me?
03:38You said it, but did not write it down or did both?
03:40I did both actually.
03:41I took a picture on Snapchat and I also wrote it down in my book.
03:46Thank you.
03:48Hi, Amy Tannery from Reuters.
03:53There were reports that Sha'Carri Richardson, Shellyann Fraser-Price were not able to get
03:58through their usual gate.
04:00I'm wondering if you know anything about that, if you talked to either of them before the
04:04semi-final and what they had to say.
04:07I didn't speak to anybody, to be honest.
04:09I did just focus on just myself and my race plan and just trusting what my coach told
04:13me to do.
04:14Hi, it's Eddie Pelz from AP.
04:27Just kind of a racing question.
04:29You raced next to Sha'Carri in the semi-final and you beat her.
04:33Does that do anything to set you up for the final as far as building confidence or sending
04:39a message, anything like that?
04:41I don't think it's about sending a message.
04:43This year, I've really been trying to focus on just my lane and just working on my execution
04:48only and not thinking about who's next to me.
04:50Sometimes when I do, I tend to panic, but I think so far this year, I've just had such
04:56a good strategy and just focusing on my execution only and nobody next to me.
05:00So I think that has worked in my favor.
05:03Hi, Welton Johnson, Let's Run.com.
05:12Last year, worlds didn't go as you wanted, fifth place.
05:15What did you do differently this year?
05:16Well, I didn't have the long collegiate season.
05:19I think I ran over 50 races last year, but I think not having trials and my coach really
05:26just being particular in how I race this year has been a huge advantage for me.
05:33But I think the main difference is just how much I race this year and we're really preparing
05:38for the Olympics this year instead of, well, last year it was really about NCAAs and whatever
05:44is left for world championship.
05:45But I think this year, the main goal was the Olympics.
05:49Hi there, I'm Josh Noble from the Financial Times.
05:54I'm just wondering, you wrote down this morning, Olympic champion.
05:58Have you thought about how your life might change when you wake up tomorrow?
06:02No.
06:04I'm still trying to think of what just happened.
06:09It hasn't sunk in yet.
06:12Slowly but surely it is.
06:14I'm not sure what tomorrow may look like.
06:16I don't have to run the 200.
06:17That's what I'm thinking about right now.
06:20I'm getting to bed.
06:20I'm just trying to rest.
06:21But I haven't thought about it as yet.
06:25Since she has to run the 200, we're going to do two more questions and then let her go get some rest.
06:34Lindsay Schnell, USA Today.
06:35Congratulations, Julian.
06:37Usually in these scenarios, the silver and bronze medalists are also up there with you.
06:42So I wondered, is this strange for you right now that you're by yourself?
06:46Do you feel lonely?
06:48Do you wish they were here too?
06:50It's my first time here, so I don't know what to expect.
06:53So I'm just happy to be up there as an Olympic champion.
06:57I'm just hoping to see what tomorrow holds for me.
07:00That's all I care about right now.
07:04Last question.
07:04Let's go all the way in the back there.
07:10Hi, Julian.
07:11Nick McCarvel from olympics.com.
07:13You mentioned St. Lucia, obviously, in the history that you made.
07:16But what can you tell us about your tiny island nation?
07:19I think 180,000 people live there.
07:22So what pride do you have being from such a small place?
07:26You know, I feel honored to just be an ambassador for my country.
07:31Not many persons know about St. Lucia.
07:33Sometimes I can be on an Uber, and they ask me where I'm from,
07:36just hear my accent, and they'll be like, where's St. Lucia?
07:39And I think now, being an Olympic champion,
07:41I'm sure people is going to be searching for St. Lucia now.
07:44And I just feel so honored to just wear, you know,
07:47my country's name across my chest and just be an ambassador for them.
07:50And I'm sure they're celebrating right now.
07:53I'm just looking forward to the celebration when I go home with them.
07:57All right, Julian Alford is the gold medalist in the women's 100.
08:00Thank you, Julian, and good luck tomorrow on the 200.
08:02Thank you so much.
08:03Thanks for having me.
08:05Thank you.
08:07In just a few minutes, we will bring on the gold medal winning
08:10four by 400 mixed relay team from the Netherlands.
08:13We just need to reset the stream and we'll bring them on.
08:16And then we will do the shot put.
08:20And we can end this stream.
