00:00Namaste, bonjour and hello, I am Parvati Bhanot and I am currently standing in the heart of
00:15Paris just by the river Seine which is hosting the parade of athletes for the opening ceremony
00:21of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
00:35The opening ceremony by the Seine out here under the open sky is the first in Olympics
00:40history.
00:41Most opening ceremonies have historically taken place inside a stadium but not this
00:46one.
00:47This is what Paris looks like right now.
00:49Let's take a look.
00:56There are about 10,500 athletes on open boats representing 205 national delegations.
01:21The boats traverse a 6 km route which ends ultimately at Trocadero near the Eiffel Tower.
01:27The weather as you can see is cloudy, it's raining but this most certainly has not cast
01:32any shadow on the enthusiasm of athletes in the French capital.
01:46I am Vandini Sharma and I am part of the athlete's family actually.
01:51My brother Shubhankar Sharma is representing India in the Olympics as a golf athlete.
01:57So we are here, it's our first time in Paris, this is my dad, papa and mama and we are very
02:03happy to be here.
02:04Can you tell me a little bit more about your brother and what he plays?
02:10Oh, they are very excited over here.
02:14My brother plays golf, he is currently the leading Indian golfer in the world and he
02:21has essentially done quite a lot in the field so we, should I speak about, I will speak
02:29about it.
02:32So last year we got the highest ever finish in the British Open that India has ever had
02:39in history.
02:41And then my brother has won titles in 2018 for Mewank and Joburg, these two championships
02:48were really great.
02:49And then him and the whole contingent from Chandigarh has come this time to represent
02:55in men's golf.
02:56So that's my brother, that's Jessie Mewar, the coach.
03:06And there's a whole big team from India this time, so we are all very happy to be here.
03:12And ma'am how do you feel about your son coming to Paris?
03:17It's a dream come true, I would say very happy to be here and I wish all athletes good luck.
03:24The Indian contingent, the very best of everything.
03:29We were in Scotland, we performed in the Open very well and from there we are here.
03:33Now let's talk about the Indian delegation.
03:35The 117-member strong Indian delegation is led by badminton champ PV Sindhu and table
03:41tennis star Sharath Kamal tonight.
03:53Hopes are also riding high on Neeraj Chopra who won a gold medal in the men's javelin
03:58throw at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
04:11Right now we are here to get the vibe of opening ceremony of Olympics.
04:17So it's a great opportunity to see something and see the city, you know, run together and
04:23get a vibe together on this day.
04:25And we are lucky enough to witness this day when we are in Paris.
04:30Nothing in particular, just we are here for the vibes.
04:33We have not bought the tickets, unfortunately, we didn't get time or we didn't get opportunity
04:39to buy the tickets.
04:40But yeah, we're here just to follow the vibes.
04:42It's really great.
04:45What we are looking around the people, the excitement that we are seeing here, like people
04:48have actually on this rainy day, people have actually come out of their, you know, houses
04:53to actually see even if they don't have tickets, they are, we are seeing they are walking around
04:57on the roads.
04:58So it's an amazing vibe.
05:02And despite of such a rainy day, exactly normal Parisian weather.
05:07So it's great seeing people and yeah, we are just going with the flow.
05:13PV Sindhu, we are looking for winning the gold with her and Neeraj Chopra.
05:20Yeah, exactly.
05:21Yeah.
05:22So we'll follow that.
05:23Few sports we follow, not all.
05:27Maybe a gold medal in wrestling.
05:29Let's see.
05:30Yeah.
05:31Paris has been a busy, busy city to be in and not one without its inconveniences as
05:35it is barricaded for the Olympic Games at multiple major intersections across the capital.
05:41The security deployment is also robust.
05:43There are about 45,000 police personnel and over 10,000 soldiers by the six kilometre
05:49stretch of the Seine.
05:51A 150 kilometre radius around Paris has become a no-fly zone starting 6.30pm local time,
05:58an hour before the opening ceremony began.
06:11The Olympics go on for the next 16 days and we are going to be here in Paris to bring
06:17you all of the latest.
06:18For One India News, this is Paridhi Bhanot reporting from Paris.
