00:00From fleeting cameos to the merc with a mouth we all know and love, Deadpool in Wolverine
00:04was filled to the brim with Wade Wilson variants.
00:07But who wins the Battle of the Deadpools?
00:09Okay, so we're not really sure which Deadpool this one actually is.
00:13What we do know for certain is that during that final sequence, somewhere in the crowd
00:17is a variant known as Haroldpool, named after the stunt performer and actor who plays him,
00:21Harold Holland.
00:22And no, that last name is not a coincidence.
00:24This is indeed the younger brother of the MCU's Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland.
00:28Hey, everyone."
00:29As fans may be aware, both Hollands are pretty athletic in real life, with the elder Tom
00:34performing many of the stunts in his own films.
00:36Harold was actually supposed to appear in a bit of stunt work even earlier in the MCU,
00:41playing the role of a thief in Spider-Man No Way Home.
00:44Though that scene was ultimately left on the cutting room floor, it seems to have connected
00:47him with stunt coordinator and second unit director George Coddle, who ended up working
00:51on Deadpool in Wolverine.
00:54One of the most eye-catching variants seen in Deadpool in Wolverine stands out due to
00:57his ghost-white mask and black hood.
01:00This is Zenpool, who in the comics is actually not a variant of the character from an alternate
01:04reality, but an alter-ego adopted by the Earth-616 Deadpool after the events of the AXIS storyline.
01:10To make a long and very complicated story as short as possible, AXIS saw various heroes
01:15and some villains join forces to stop the Red Skull from using the powers of the villain
01:19Onslaught to conquer the world.
01:21In the process, Dr. Doom and the Scarlet Witch cast a spell which unintentionally alters
01:25the personalities of several Marvel characters, Deadpool included.
01:29Now aspiring to avoid violence and conflict as much as possible, Deadpool becomes Zenpool,
01:33a vaguely Buddhist monk who goes as far as constructing a massive Zen garden in his backyard.
01:39It's certainly a choice.
01:41Near the front of the crowd when the Deadpool Corps first arrives through the portal is
01:45a Deadpool variant dressed in red vintage military wear, with two old-fashioned sword
01:49handles sticking out where katanas should normally be.
01:52This is Frederick Wilson, also known as Wheezy Wilson for the gas mask he wears at all times.
01:57He is also often referred to as the Golden Age Deadpool, so named for the comic book
02:01era generally agreed to have begun with the creation of Superman in the late 1930s and
02:05ending sometime in the early to mid-1950s.
02:07Look, up in the sky, it's a bird!
02:10It's a plane!
02:11It's Superman!
02:12On his Earth, where World War II is likely still waging in perpetuity, Wheezy is the
02:18embarrassing nephew of President Woodrow Wilson and a disastrous private in the U.S.
02:22military.
02:23He's discharged early on, after clearly faking mustard gas poisoning, when in reality he
02:27just smokes a ton of cigarettes, hence the constant need for a gas mask.
02:31It isn't until 1938 that he's transformed into Weapon X as part of a Nazi experiment
02:36gone wrong.
02:37Despite a unique comic book origin story, he doesn't do much in Deadpool and Wolverine
02:41and sadly only barely stands out visually compared to his companions.
02:46The straw hat-wearing Deadpool seen during the final battle is Watari, known interchangeably
02:50as Roninpool and The Fool.
02:52This variant first appeared in the alternate-universe Marvel comic book series Five Ronin, a five-chapter
02:57miniseries that reimagined various Marvel heroes as warriors in feudal Japan.
03:02Like many variants of Deadpool that were created for one-off stories, he was eventually revived
03:06as part of a multiversal crossover event that featured as many different Deadpools as possible.
03:11Relative to some of the other variants on this list, Watari actually gets a fair amount
03:15of screen time in Deadpool and Wolverine.
03:17After getting both of his arms cut off during the carnage, he's revived hilariously with
03:21two infant arms, a callback to the first Deadpool film in which Wade temporarily has a baby
03:26hand after cutting his own hand off to escape from Colossus.
03:30The high-tech Deadpool variant with a glowing suit and electrified batons is Warda Wilson,
03:34Wade Wilson's daughter, and the Deadpool of the year 2099.
03:37Indeed, she exists in the same timeline as Miguel O'Hara, the Spider-Man of the 2099
03:43universe who serves as the secondary villain in Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse.
03:46You're the Blue Panther.
03:47No.
03:48The Caped Blue Sater.
03:49No.
03:50Dark Garfield.
03:51Stop.
03:52Macho Libre.
03:53Given that we're presumably dealing with the movie multiverse and not the comic book multiverse
03:56here, you can make the argument that the cinematic Spider-Man 2099 and Deadpool 2099 hail from
04:01the same universe.
04:02But even without that connection, Warda stands above her companions for getting to flex her
04:07full power, even for a brief moment.
04:09Not to mention the viral meme going around that duped some fans of Sabrina Carpenter
04:13into thinking she played Deadpool 2099 in the movie.
04:16She didn't.
04:17Deadpool 2099 might not be a secret celebrity cameo, but plenty of other celebs do feature
04:22in Deadpool and Wolverine.
04:23The most subtle of these is arguably Welshpool, a variant of Deadpool whose costume is only
04:28slightly modified to feature the Welsh flag in some green, red, and white coloring.
04:33Welshpool is also the name of a small town in Wales not terribly far from Wrexham, where
04:37a certain football team just so happens to be co-owned by one Ryan Reynolds.
04:41Of course, Welshpool is a cameo meant for football and welcome to Wrexham fans everywhere,
04:46with the character being played by Wrexham AFC forward Paul Mullen.
04:49Reynolds, a self-professed fan of stunt casting, involved Mullen so that he could honor the
04:53club in the MCU.
04:55Wrexham striker Olly Palmer is also in the film, having supposedly talked his way into
04:59the background of one of the movie's bar scenes.
05:02Part of Ryan Reynolds' reasoning for involving Wrexham players in Deadpool and Wolverine
05:06is because, according to the actor, they're like his family, and he loves involving his
05:10family in his work.
05:11Of course, putting his money squarely where his mouth is, Reynolds not only cast his football
05:15family but his actual wife and children, the youngest of whom is credited as playing the
05:19original character, Babypool.
05:21Though the character seems to be at least partially animated with CGI, it sounds as
05:25though one-year-old Olin Reynolds is the giggling voice of this character.
05:29Even if Babypool wasn't related to Reynolds, he's still one of the most distinct characters
05:33featured in the Deadpool core sequence.
05:34He even got his own novelty popcorn bucket.
05:37The other Reynolds child featured in the Deadpool core sequence is 7-year-old Inez Reynolds,
05:42who plays the pint-sized, potty-mouthed Kidpool.
05:45In the comics, Kidpool is a version of Deadpool raised in an orphanage run by Charles Xavier.
05:49Troublemaker that he is, he makes up for his lack of katanas by stealing two laser swords
05:54that are basically lightsabers in all but name.
05:56"...elegant weapon for a more civilized age."
06:01Sadly, those weapons don't make it into Deadpool and Wolverine.
06:05This is actually kind of surprising.
06:06Ryan Reynolds and director Sean Levy featured a lightsaber as one of the franchise prop
06:10cameos in 2021's Free Guy, then went on to give Reynolds a strikingly similar weapon
06:14in their Netflix follow-up, The Atom Project.
06:17And that's to say nothing of the fact that one of Levy's upcoming projects after Deadpool
06:20is an actual Star Wars movie.
06:23So the omission of the laser swords from Deadpool and Wolverine is perplexing at best, though
06:27not glaring enough to detract too much from an otherwise amusing moment in the film.
06:31Visually, Deadpool and Wolverine's gunslinging Wild West variant is clearly inspired by the
06:36Deadpool Kid, a Western variant that first appeared alongside Lady Deadpool in the 2010
06:41comic, Deadpool Merc With a Mouth.
06:43In the film, Cowboy Deadpool is given plenty of moments to shine, and even gets a few lines
06:47of dialogue.
06:48And if he sounded familiar in the theater, that's because this role is a voice cameo
06:52from none other than Matthew McConaughey.
06:54At present, we don't know how the Academy Award-winning actor got involved in the movie.
06:58That said, it's no less incredible that a Hollywood A-lister who many have wanted to
07:02see play a Marvel character for years made his debut as such a bizarre character.
07:07At first glance, Headpool seems to just be a version of Deadpool missing the rest of
07:11his body.
07:12While that's the bare essentials of the story, Headpool is actually tied to the vast, complicated
07:16alternate Marvel Comics universe from Marvel Zombies.
07:19Originally a miniseries penned by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Zombies follows
07:24the regular heroes and villains of the Marvel universe as they fight against a virus known
07:28as the Hunger, which reduces them to sentient zombies.
07:31Headpool's unique design and function in the battle would be enough to place him in the
07:35Top 10 Deadpool variants, but what really seals the deal is his voice actor, Nathan
07:39Fillion, who makes his fourth MCU appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine after playing supporting
07:44roles in all three Guardians of the Galaxy films.
07:47Aside from being a beloved actor in general, Fillion's scrappy performance as Headpool
07:51makes him one of the most memorable parts of the entire movie, let alone this one sequence.
07:56Taking off the Top 5 is Nicepool, an original variant of Wade Wilson created for Deadpool
08:01and Wolverine, as well as the only other one played by Ryan Reynolds.
08:05Logan and Wade first encounter Nicepool in the Void, where he offers the pair his Honda
08:09Odyssey and warns them of the dangerous Deadpool Corps.
08:12Nicepool then precedes the Corps in the final battle, presumably offering to fight on the
08:16side of the two heroes — not that he gets to do very much, as Wade quickly gets him
08:20killed by using him as a human shield.
08:23Let's give the people what they came for!"
08:25The main Deadpool has a decidedly unfair advantage in a contest like this, being the central
08:29character of all three films in the Deadpool franchise.
08:32This most recent installment sees the character stepping into his own as Marvel Jesus, finally
08:37a superhero capable of saving the entire multiverse.
08:40That said, perhaps our familiarity with the character is also a problem.
08:44After all, having watched Ryan Reynolds portray almost this exact character ever since 2009's
08:48Men Origins Wolverine, the novelty of his quipping, fourth-wall-breaking, ultra-violent
08:53personality has lost a fair bit of its novelty.
08:56Does that mean he's not a delight to watch even 15 years later?
08:59Not necessarily, but it does mean that his latest movie features a few variants who are
09:03more enjoyable to watch.
09:06Ever since she was first revealed in a trailer for the film, speculation amongst MCU fans
09:10ran rampant as to which actor could possibly be playing Lady Deadpool.
09:14In the end, one popular fan theory turned out to be correct.
09:17Lady Deadpool is, at the very least, voiced by Ryan Reynolds' real-life spouse Blake Lively.
09:23The pair first got together after meeting on the set of one of Reynolds' early superhero
09:26disasters, 2011's Green Lantern.
09:29The two have been together ever since and have four children, all of whom are credited
09:32in Deadpool and Wolverine.
09:34Because Lady Deadpool never removes her mask, however, it isn't clear whether or not Lively
09:38provided anything more than the voice.
09:40We do know that her stunt double, Christiane Bettridge, was there to handle getting her
09:44face slashed by Logan mere seconds into the battle.
09:47But whether Lively got in on the action or not, the leader of the Corps fully deserves
09:51her spot as one of the movie's top three Deadpools.
09:55Just when it seems as though Deadpool and Wolverine will be thwarted by the undying
09:58Deadpool Corps, Peter appears to save the day.
10:01Peter's presence instantly diffuses the battle, seemingly because the rest of the Deadpools
10:04are too distracted by his awe-inspiring aura to continue fighting anymore.
10:08Peter, of course, debuted in Deadpool 2, in which he was brutally killed along with the
10:13vast majority of the X-Force.
10:14Oh, God.
10:15I gotta throw up in my mask.
10:18He was revived at the end of the film, however, by Deadpool's time-traveling antics.
10:21It's a widely held belief that Peter is a loose adaptation of the X-Men character Pete
10:26Wisdom, though given that they share almost no similarities apart from a name, loose would
10:30be putting it lightly.
10:32Either way, he's as cool a character as these movies have ever come up with, and his inclusion
10:36in Deadpool and Wolverine is very much appreciated.
10:40Last but certainly not least is Mary Puppins, aka Dogpool.
10:43This adorable hound is originally introduced as Nicepool's companion in the Void, but he
10:48later comes into Deadpool's possession after Nicepool makes his heroic sacrifice.
10:53Dogpool's aura is as strong if not stronger than Peter's, as the Deadpool Corps refuses
10:57to fire at Wolverine out of fear of harming the puppy.
11:00She also happens to be the most adorable Deadpool on screen.
11:03Before she was cast as Dogpool, K-9 actor Peggy had been awarded the title of Britain's
11:08ugliest dog.
11:09She now has an Instagram account thanks to her work in the movie with over 600,000 followers,
11:14but it's how she embodies the core tenets of Deadpool — self-acceptance, self-sufficiency,
11:18and self-love — that make her the best Deadpool variant featured in Deadpool and Wolverine.
