Pin traders swarm Paris Games

Dozens of passionate pin traders and collectors are fervently exchanging pins in the heart of Paris on Aug. 2, 2024 engaging in what many call an 'unofficial' Olympic sport. The pin trading fair gathered traders from around the world, all drawn by the allure of the Olympics. For two hours, the area was bustling with people eager to make a good trade. For years, people have been trading national team emblems and other souvenirs at Olympic events. According to the official Olympics website, pin trading dates back to the first modern Games in 1896, where athletes wore cardboard badges. Nearly 130 years later, the variety of pins has significantly expanded, with national organizing committees, sporting federations, media companies, and sponsors all offering their enameled mementoes.

00:00What is it?
00:02I don't know.
00:04What's it called?
00:05Gallecho.
00:09Show me your own receipt.
00:23You've been doing this for like 7 weeks.
00:26Is this like the first time?
00:28Yes.
00:31And I'll show you a very special pin.
00:34I'll trade this with you.
00:37Amazing. Thank you so much.
00:42The best thing to do if you want to trade pins
00:44is to come to the games or come to an event
00:47with pins that you have to trade.
00:49If you buy them at stores here, they're very expensive.
00:52But if you can buy them cheaper on eBay,
00:54people will buy them in bulk on eBay,
00:56especially older pins, and bring them and trade them.
00:59Then when you're trading for pins here,
01:01you don't have as big of an investment
01:03and it's easier to trade and it's easier to do.
01:05So my advice would be to come with pins
01:07rather than trying to acquire them here.
01:09And then once you get here, trade for new pins from here
01:12and build your collection that way.
01:26Hi.
01:45How's it going? How are you?
01:50For instance, in this games, I would imagine
01:53if someone had a Snoop Dogg pin,
01:55and I would imagine it costs a lot of pins to get it,
02:00or you have to be very lucky and run into him,
02:02but if you see one that someone's willing to trade,
02:05they're going to want a lot of pins for that.
02:07It's all supply and demand.
02:09And when the game starts, you never know
02:11what pin is going to be the popular pin for the games.
02:24But anyway, there they are.
02:28There they are. They're sort of here.
02:30I'll get a pin.
02:32Yes.
02:33Oh, my goodness.
02:34Yeah.
02:38I don't know. What would you like to trade?
02:40You can have this one.
02:42You can trade this one.
02:44These two.
02:46These two.
02:48She doesn't want to trade those.
02:53Thank you.
02:59Oh, yeah. Thank you.
03:04It's the unofficial sport of the Olympics.
03:07There are thousands of people that pin trade.
03:09There are probably more pin traders than there are athletes,
03:11if you think of it that way.
03:13I mean, we set this up today, and there was no advertising.
03:15We just put something on Facebook and said,
03:17come. It's been busy all day long.
03:19People love coming here and trading and interacting,
03:22and it becomes very addictive.
03:36There's so many pigeons over there.
03:38It's the same thing.
03:40Pigeons are a big thing.
03:42I like New York as well.
03:44I like New York as well.
03:50Controversy about the judging.
03:52Right, right.
03:54For a while, it was,
03:56it was,
03:58here's some money,
04:00and there's some money.
04:02And that's,
04:04we got like three of those.
04:06Very smart.
04:08That's the story behind it all.
04:10The fact that a lot represent countries,
04:12so you're
04:14kind of getting stuff from all over the world.
04:16And that's really cool.
04:18And you meet people.
04:20I got this from Australian girls
04:22in the bus yesterday,
04:24and
04:26we just chatted a lot,
04:28and they were really nice, and they gave me this.
04:30This pin traveled from
04:32Perth, Australia,
04:34and
04:36it's just,
04:38yeah, it's really nice.
04:40Things don't just come from the store.
04:42They travel.
04:44They kind of have a story.
