00:00:28The winner will advance into a first place tie with the New York Giants in the NFC East
00:00:34as the Giants were dropped already today by the New York Jets.
00:00:37Hi everybody, Jim Nantz along with Randy Cross, we're glad to have you with us for this game.
00:00:42You know Randy, these two teams appear to be headed in opposite directions.
00:00:46The Cowboys have won four straight while the Eagles have lost two in a row.
00:00:49How can Philadelphia compete with the Super Bowl champs today?
00:00:52The keys for the Philadelphia Eagles are to take advantage of every opportunity they get
00:00:55offensively and defensively they're just going to have to stop the run at Emmitt Smith
00:00:59because Dallas in these weather conditions will run the ball at least 45 times.
00:01:03Let's talk about some of the headliners in this game.
00:01:05First Ken O'Brien will start at quarterback for Philadelphia.
00:01:07What about that?
00:01:08Look for him to make something happen here.
00:01:10Rich Cotite said hey, bad time to get conservative, he's going to open this offense up and try
00:01:14to make things happen.
00:01:15The Cowboys will kick.
00:01:19Cowboys in the blue jerseys.
00:01:20This used to be one of the hot rivalries in the NFL.
00:01:24Does it still have the same pizazz?
00:01:26I think it's a little bit more of a one-sided rivalry.
00:01:29Philadelphia has a strong dislike trending toward hate I think for Dallas, but Dallas
00:01:34is pretty ambivalent.
00:01:35They've got the attitude right now in Dallas going that hey, everybody hates Dallas and
00:01:39everybody wants to win against us.
00:01:42Seth Joyner getting pumped before this game and will have to set it back on the tee.
00:01:52The Eagles have back deep by Sikahama and Vaughn Hebron, rookie running back from Virginia
00:01:59Tech.
00:02:00And right off the top here, let's keep an eye on these coverage teams, the Dallas Cowboys.
00:02:05Between Gant and Billy Bates, the whole package, these guys go crazy and this is where you
00:02:10can see a quick turnover.
00:02:11Murray's kick, not very deep.

00:02:13He is collared at the 16 by James Washington.
00:02:14Quick celebration for the Cowboys.
00:02:30Here's Ken O'Brien, 10 years the quarterback for the New York Jets, signed just a couple
00:02:35of weeks ago.
00:02:36The offensive line set up with Broderick Thompson who started his career with the Cowboys.
00:02:41Here's the anchor at center.
00:02:44Herschel Walker played four years for the Cowboys.
00:02:47Heath Sherman, James Lofton, Calvin Williams and Mark Bovaro is the tight end.
00:02:52Eagles start out from their 16.
00:02:55Almost take a book out of Cunningham's type of approach to the game.
00:03:16He makes things happen and the secret for this offense and Ken O'Brien is to make things
00:03:20happen.
00:03:21Halfback option pass, whether it's a reverse, whatever it takes, that's what they have to
00:03:26break out here offensively.
00:03:27They cannot be conservative against the speed defense of Dallas.
00:03:31It is third and seventh.
00:03:33Walker for the first down.
00:03:39Wrapped up by Darren Smith but the Eagles move the chain.
00:03:50And the key group to watch for the Eagles is going to be this offensive line.
00:03:53They've got to protect Kenny O'Brien.
00:03:55He's only been in the offense a couple of weeks.
00:03:57They gave him the time.
00:03:59He's got the receivers.
00:04:03This Philadelphia offense has not scored a touchdown in the first quarter since the season
00:04:07opener against the Phoenix Cardinals.

00:04:30Check out the front that they're looking at.

00:04:34And watch how quick things pop clear right up the middle.
00:04:38A quick trap by Hallstrom or as quick as a trap a guy 6'5", 320 is going to make.
00:04:42But Walker isn't even in touch until he's five yards down the field.
00:04:47It appeared to be almost a mix-up when they exchanged between O'Brien and Walker.
00:04:51They were a little bit snug.
00:04:53It's a mix-up when they drop it.
00:04:55It's just sort of a mishap when they don't.

00:05:25you're going to see Lofton catch a lot of balls.
00:05:27James Lofton played a couple of weeks with the Rams
00:05:31and saw little action.

00:05:37Eagles just re-signed him.

00:05:46This Dallas defense,
00:05:48torn apart in the season opener
00:05:50against the Redskins.
00:05:52Since that time,
00:05:54they've allowed only four touchdowns
00:05:56in the last five games.
00:05:58If you watch this defense,
00:06:00the better part of this season,
00:06:02everybody's moved the ball in the Dallas Cowboys.
00:06:04What they haven't done,
00:06:06is when they get in the plus territory,
00:06:0820 yards in,
00:06:10you don't score against this defense.
00:06:12Second and six.
00:06:18Walker moves in
00:06:20into Dallas territory.
00:06:22But it'll be third and four
00:06:24for the Eagles.

00:08:49is the quickness, the speed
00:08:51and the reaction time of this Dallas defense.
00:08:53If you're going to make plays,
00:08:55you've got to count on trying to use a play action
00:08:57and getting a quick reaction from them
00:08:59or attacking them straight at them
00:09:01and straight away because this is a team that can
00:09:04sideline to sideline.

00:13:27well I gotta tell you what, Mr. Smith
00:13:29he's 4 yards out of bounds

00:13:33at that angle, you got
00:13:35one thing in mind and that's exactly what you did
00:13:37you deserve 15 yards and
00:13:39that's the kind of hit on a marquee player like
00:13:41Terry Aikman that could draw a fine
00:13:43so the Cowboys

00:14:05in the last two encounters against the Eagles
00:14:07and Dallas will keep pounding the run

00:14:13trying to take the wide receivers away
00:14:15and Ben Smith is the gentleman who got that
00:14:17last personal foul and he's also
00:14:19going to start today because the Eagles
00:14:21feel they need his physical nature against the

00:17:45how do you pass it up?

00:17:53intended for Michael Irvin
00:17:55who wanted interference
00:17:57Michael I believe has a bit of a call here
00:17:59he was held right at the end of that pass

00:18:03he was grabbed by the jersey
00:18:05but you know
00:18:07that's part of the deal too, that's part of Michael's game
00:18:09he likes to get into the
00:18:11defenders heads
00:18:13he wants to get into the officials heads
00:18:15he always wants to be considered the guy that's being wrong
00:18:17so he'll get that break
00:18:19but he's the guy, along with Jerry Rice
00:18:21that uses the push off
00:18:23as an offensive receiver
00:18:25as good as anybody in the league

00:19:01they can give their offense
00:19:03a chance to get into the rhythm of the game
00:19:07well again, as we said at the top
00:19:09the winner will move into a tie
00:19:11with the Giants in the NFC East for first
00:19:13did that Giants loss surprise you?
00:19:15it sort of surprised me that
00:19:17the Giants offense was throttled so effectively
00:19:19they got down to the one yard line
00:19:21two times early and couldn't get a touchdown
00:19:23a great hit by Ronnie Lott
00:19:25on sort of a slip by Tillman
00:19:27that resulted in a fumble
00:19:29probably the critical play early in that game
00:19:33Larry Brown cut him under
00:19:38from an offensive standpoint though
00:19:40it was a saving tackle by Brown
00:19:42to stop for more yards being given up
00:19:44but it was a great job by Sherman
00:19:46of keeping everything going forward
00:19:48he was cut down on the tackle
00:19:50but he picked up three more yards just with his momentum
00:19:52and I guess flight maybe would be the term you want to use
00:19:55he did set sail
00:19:57second and five
00:20:08Hirschholz about a yard shy
00:20:10of the 30 yard line
00:20:12where they need to get to for the first down
00:20:14Tony Casillas brought him down
00:20:19didn't get much on that play
00:20:21but that is the way you want to attack this Dallas defense

00:20:25with these guys
00:20:27Jimmy Johnson predicates his entire system
00:20:29offense, defense and special teams on speed
00:20:31and Hirschholz Walker needs to be running straight ahead

00:20:41is in the backfield for the Eagles

00:22:46both teams

00:23:00and those personal fouls offset
00:23:02it was ruled the fouls happened after the
00:23:04kick so the possessions
00:23:06had changed and
00:23:08those sort of offset and the ball will go back to Dallas

00:23:22Emmitt Smith could be in store for a big afternoon
00:23:24well Emmitt Smith is the
00:23:26designated bullseye for the Dallas
00:23:28offense everybody goes into the game
00:23:30saying we got to stop Emmitt let's make him throw
00:23:32and they didn't stop Emmitt from doing anything
00:23:38see if Emmitt goes at 6
00:23:40for 57 on the first drive if he gets

00:24:10the momentum over from its win against the Saints

00:24:16Indianapolis by a field
00:24:18goal over New England and the Jets
00:24:20dropped the Giants
00:24:24play action threatened to go long
00:24:26but no he's sacked for the second time
00:24:30and it's Andy
00:24:32Harmon again
00:24:34we got the tempers
00:24:36are going right now
00:24:38the Dallas offensive line is
00:24:40not used to having Troy Aikman one
00:24:42dropped and two abused
00:24:44and he was abused on the sideline
00:24:46by Ben Smith and he's been dropped for sack
00:24:48so far twice
00:24:58there was no infraction
00:25:00that goes under the boys will be boys
00:25:02category and was not a penalty
00:25:04but watch Harmon 91
00:25:06this is an effort sack grinding
00:25:08grinding gets down there around the ankles
00:25:10and gets himself his second sack

00:25:14and that's the kind of defensive tackle
00:25:16that Harmon is he was playing and earlier
00:25:18in the year but the tackle position
00:25:20is where he belongs where he can do that kind of

00:31:10you don't want that with your quarterback
00:31:12they've got to get that protection tightened up
00:31:14just shy of the first, second down
00:31:16and one, Smith again, first down

00:31:22over 80 yards in this first half
00:31:26Dallas is an offensive
00:31:28line as a group that just
00:31:30mans up and moves people and lets Emmitt
00:31:32Smith find the holes, watch him glide
00:31:34glide, now he sees the hole

00:32:04all day long, if you can cover the

00:32:14when Aikman is dangerous is when Aikman's
00:32:16taking three steps or five steps and delivering
00:32:18the ball on time
00:32:20passing wise, Aikman's completed
00:32:22only one pass
00:32:24and that ended up being fumbled
00:32:26but recovered by the Cowboys
00:32:28and he's been sacked twice so they've lost yardage
00:32:30in the passing game
00:32:32running has certainly worked for them
00:32:34but Emmitt Smith this time

00:32:42it's one of the dilemmas as a defense

00:32:54if you come in and say I'm going to take the pass away
00:32:56well all you've got to look at then
00:32:58is Johnston is a lead blocker, a big physical

00:33:02best running backs in the last five to ten
00:33:04years and Emmitt Smith running the ball

00:48:53running plays in this game so far
00:48:55but they have not been able to follow him up effectively
