In American Fiction, author Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright) is upset after one of his works is rejected by publishers and his career seems to be stalled because his work is not considered “black enough.” Meanwhile, Sinatra Golden’s (Issa Rae) book We’re Lives in Da Ghetto hits the bestseller list, leaving the author in crisis and even more frustrated. Realizing the type of content that the public is interested in, Thelonious decides to write a satirical novel under a pseudonym with the intention of exposing the hypocrisies of the publishing world.
